On Monday, August 7, the Wall-Badlands Area Chamber funded the First Annual Wall Crawl. The one day event offered a show & shine motorcycle show, poker run, and concert by 35th and Taylor. Sustained Rain and Catastrophic Flooding in Southeast Texas Prompts Call for Blood Donors Across U.S.

Rapid City, SD (Aug. 28, 2017) – Blood donors across the country are being asked to give blood as soon as possi-ble over the next several days to help ensure patient blood needs can continue to be met despite the effects of Hurri-cane Harvey. The AABB Interorganizational Task Force on Domestic Disasters and Acts of Terrorism issued a news release call-ing for blood donations across the country Sunday afternoon. In the wake of the storm, many blood drives have been cancelled and donor centers closed in the affected areas. With more sustained rain forecasted, these cancellations and closures are likely to rise. United Blood Services needs the community’s help to ensure a safe and adequate supply not only for our community but for the communities im-pacted by this massive storm. As noted in the AABB news release type O blood donations are the most critically needed at this time, however all

blood types are welcome. Blood centers across the country are working together in this effort. United Blood Services urges both existing and first-time do-nors to make and keep appointments over the next several days and in the coming weeks. The timing of this storm is especially concerning as we approach Labor Day – a time when donations dramati-cally decline across the country due to the three-day holiday weekend. Individuals who are as young as 16 years of age (with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in general good health may be eligible to donate blood. As part of Blood Systems Blood Services Division, United Blood Services is included in a multi-state sys-tem of blood centers. This network works in tandem, moving lifesaving donations throughout the system to help ensure blood is available when and where it’s needed most.

Before kickoff at the August, 25 home football game against Lyman, a dedication program for the Wall School sports complex was held. The dedication program also rec-ognized veterans through the “Flags Honoring America” pro-gram. As part of the flag pro-gram approximately 75 ban-ners, 75 flags, and 2 super flags were displayed.

On Monday, August 21, areas of Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina were in the path of totality for a total solar eclipse. The duration of totality for the eclipse was brief, at roughly 2 minutes and 41 seconds, the long-est recorded time on ground. The eclipse was the first solar eclipse since March 7, 1970. The Wall Community Library helped educate people about the eclipse and partnered with the U.S. Forest Service National Grasslands Visitor Center to provide free eclipse viewing glasses. The Glasses were provided through a grant from STARNet’s NASA @ My Library initiative with support from NASA, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Research Corporation, and Google. The National Grasslands Visitor Center held a Total Solar Eclipse program which lasted for the duration of the eclipse, 10:30 AM—1:15 PM. Although Wall was not an area of totality, the Wall Community Library ran out of the viewing glasses the Thursday be-fore the eclipse and the National Grasslands Visitor Center ran out around 10:45 AM the morning of the eclipse. More than 100 people participated in the solar eclipse program that was held at the Nation-al Grasslands Visitors Center, which gave viewers the opportunity to see the eclipse through a solar telescope, create a solar eclipse viewer out of shoes boxes and children had the opportunity to rec-ord their experience in a solar eclipse activity book. The next total solar eclipse will happen in April, 2024 and will cross 12 states on the eastern part of the nation.
