THE FIRST COMMENCEMENT

Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law was chartered by the New York State Board of Regents in 197 4 and opened in September 197 6. It was named to honor the memory of the late distinguished jurist who, as Chief Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals and then as Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, established a tradition of excellence in the law. The purpose of the Cardozo School is to achieve the great goals of legal education articulated by Justice Cardozo in 1935: "We are trying to teach law and to study it scientifically, and yet imaginatively too-feeling our way to a new sense of its significance, of the forces that have brought it into being, of the processes that are keeping it alive, and of the ends that it must serve to foster if its high potencies are not to fall."

The School is committed to making a unique contribution to legal education and the welfare of the general community. Its course of study-leading to the Doctor of Law (J.D.) degree-prepares its students for both traditional and emerging forms of professional legal practice as well as for positions in business, public service, and other areas where a legal education has relevance.

Yeshiva University's commitment to quality together with its renowned scholarship in the Judaic heritage are a strong foundation for a law school shaped by tradition yet able to blend the past with the complex requirements of modern society. A new program at the Law School is Mishpat lvri (Jewish law studies). The Cardozo School further enriches many of the University's undergraduate and graduate level programs. With the establishment of this School, the University is continuing its tradition as a pioneer of unique educational programs.

The School's location at the Brookdale Center affords stimulating association with the University's Ferkauf Graduate School and Wurzweiler School of Social Work. The space devoted to the Cardozo School has been redesigned to accommodate the needs of a modern law school.

In recognition of the vital role of the library in the education of the law student, the Cardozo School, aided by the generosity of the Levitt Foundation, is developing a facility to rank among the nation's outstanding legal libraries. The 45,000 square-foot Levitt Library, housing some 155,000 volumes, will eventually hold 250,000, including collections of statutes, reports, digests, and periodicals.

To further enhance its usefulness as a research center, the design of the Levitt

Library incorporates advanced systems technology. A large and well-equipped

microprinter and photocopy area increases the accessibility of all materials.

Students also may utilize the six other libraries of the Yeshiva University

Library System, housing some 800,000 volumes, periodicals, and special collec

tions in all branches of the arts, sciences, and humanities.

Honoring by name those whose benefactions have contributed substantially to

the founding and development of Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law are the

Brookdale Foundation; the Levitt Library, the Joe and Celia Weinstein Reading

Area, the Mr. and Mrs. Joseph M. Drexler Reading Area, the Sidney Weisner

Lecture Hall, the Gerald and Melvin J. Furst Faculty Lounge, the Jacob Burns

Moot Court, and the growing number of Cardozo Fellows.

The Dr. Samuel Belkin Professorial Chair in Law and Society memorializes the

late president of Yeshiva University, deceased in April 1976, distinguished

educator and the founder of Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, whose final

act of more than 35 years of service was the establishment of the Law School

and the appointment of Monrad G. Paulsen as its first dean.

The Nathaniel L. Goldstein Annual Lecture, initiated this year, is a series to

be presented annually by a leading member of the legal profession.

Another major component of the growing school is its broad spectrum of

student activities, including the Cardozo Law Review, the voluntary competitions

of the Jacob Burns Moot Court, the Law Student Association, Cardozo Law

Women, the Eleanor Roosevelt Society of International Law, and the Society

for the Study of Law and the Aging.
