Objectives of First Aid Equipment Training o To gain a basic understanding of the legal requirements of a

business in the provision of First Aid Equipment for their staff

o To gain a full understanding of the Alsco product offering and service for First Aid Equipment

o To learn how to assess a business requirements for First Aid Equipment



Understanding the legal requirements : o The Code of Practice for First Aid in the workplace is approved

under section 274 of the WHS Act o The WHS Regulations place specific obligations on a person

conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU): o to ensure the workplace has adequate First Aid equipment

and facilities for the administration of First Aid o All workers must be able to access a First Aid Kit

o The penalties shown below for non-compliance are significant,

making compliance a very important issue for any business



Understanding the legal requirements : o First Aid Kits can be any size, shape or type to suit the workplace but each

kit should: o Be large enough to contain all the necessary items (a list of

recommended items is available from Safe Work Australia First Aid in the Workplace – Code of Practice)

o Be immediately identifiable with a white cross on a green background

o Contain a list of contents of that kit

o Be made of a material that will protect the contents from dust, moisture and contamination

o Every employee needs fast, reliable access to First Aid and every PCBU needs to make sure their staff are covered

o A portable First Aid Kit should be provided in the vehicles of mobile workers

o For those on the move, Alsco’s soft sided pouch is perfect, it tucks easily away under the seat or in the boot.

Eyewash Stations :

o “Eye wash equipment should be provided where there is a risk of hazardous chemicals of infectious substances causing eye injury”

First Aid in the Workplace - Code of Practice

o Workers who are exposed to harmful chemicals and materials need fast access to easy to use emergency eye flushing equipment

o Even with good safety procedures accidents do happen

o The Alsco eyewash station can be easily installed

o The Alsco eyewash station is ideal for small workshops, laboratories or kitchens

o It is serviced the same way as our First Aid Kits (3 monthly and items replaced if used)

o Eyewash stations must be sold in conjunction with First Aid Kits

Eyewash Stations : o The bottles are contained in a sturdy safe wall mounted cabinet

o The bottles have easy to read instruction on how to use

o The bottles just pop out of the unit for fast easy administration

o The eyecup on top of the bottle makes it a no mess flush and ensures the flushing

liquid is isn’t being wasted

o It includes 2 x 500ml bottles of sterile saline, a small mirror and a dust-proof cover

Defibrillators :

o Sudden cardiac arrest can happen at anytime and workplaces should be adequately equipped to handle such emergencies

o “An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is a useful addition for workplaces where there is a high risk of electrocution or where there are large numbers of members of the public”

First Aid in the Workplace - Code of Practice

o A patient who is in cardiac arrest and is treated immediately with a defibrillator has a 95% chance of survival, without it their rate of survival drops to 5%

o Anyone can use an AED, as soon as you turn it on, it tells you exactly what to do



Defibrillators :

o Through Alsco, your customer can benefit from one of the world’s leading AED’s, the Heartsine Samaritan 500P

o It has simple press button technology and step by step voice instructions

o After it guides you to attach the pads to the patient, it calibrates what is happening to the patients heart and advises the course of action required

o Whether it be administration of a shock or advice to perform CPR

o It even tells you how to properly perform CPR ; if you are pushing too hard, not hard enough, too slow or too fast

o It self tests, so if there’s a problem it beeps and let’s you know to contact Alsco immediately for service



Defibrillators :

o It’s light weight, durable and compact, anyone can carry it to a patient

o Alsco’s friendly service team will check the unit 4 times a year to ensure the battery is ok and the unit is working properly

o Defibrillator Rental Agreement includes : o Supply and installation of the defibrillator and perspex cabinet o One free service and replacement of battery/pads at 3 years o Replacement if the defibrillator is used in a life saving situation during the 5 year

period o Replacement with new equipment after initial 5 year period

o An outright purchase of a defibrillator of this standard is approximately 3 times the

Alsco annual rental price o Defibrillators remain the property of Alsco & must be returned to Alsco at the end of

the agreement



How does the Alsco service differ from other first aid suppliers :

o Alsco provides a managed First Aid Equipment service, totally unique to any other company

o No upfront purchase, payments monthly or annually

o The service option per year costs less than purchasing a similar regular hospital grade kit outright

o Every 3 months our friendly service team member visits the customer and services the kit :

o completely replacing the liner with a brand new one o replacing any used or open modules o replacing any expired modules o cleans the unit o sign the service register inside the cabinet door or in the portable liner

o If the customer uses any of the contents between services, they can simply call Alsco and replacement items will be sent by express post within 48 hours

o Alsco First Aid Kits and Eyewash stations are provided on a 3 year service agreement

type and how many First Aid Kits, eyewash stations and defibrillators would be appropriate for their business



Your knowledge can help the customer assess their First Aid Equipment requirements : o A good way to do this is to ask lots of questions :

o Does the customer know about the WHS regulations o Does the customer currently comply with WHS regulations o How many employee’s o How many patron’s o How big are the premises o How far away from emergency services is the site o How many floors has the building o Are there separate work areas o Is the site high risk (industrial environment) or a lower risk (office

environment)



You knowledge can help the customer assess their First Aid Equipment requirements :

o Once you have documented this information you can make a

recommendation of the First Aid Equipment suitable for their business o Always take into account the number of employees plus patrons o Large premises may require increased number of First Aid Equipment even

if the staff numbers are low. Precious time may be lost travelling a large distance to gain access to the equipment

o If the site is in a remote area or long distance from emergency services you

would consider recommending a defibrillator and a larger First Aid Kit

o If the building has many floors, recommend equipment on each floor

o If there separate work areas, recommend equipment in each area

o At a high risk site, you would consider, eyewash stations, a defibrillator and an increased number of kits.



You can help your customer assess their First Aid Equipment requirements : o As a guide we would recommend:

o A small kit for businesses with 1-10+ employee’s o A regular kit for businesses with 20- 25 employee’s

o Always take into account other variables (stated previously) when

recommending equipment
