The interest was enor-mous:more than 3,000professionals fromthroughout Europe wan-ted to see the newPistenBully 600.Thesuspense was palpable.Rumours were rife inadvance, but no oneknew exactly whatKässbohrer would be pre-senting on the “FIRE INRED”tour.Accordingly, there was a great rush asthe PistenBully 600 tookto the slopes for the firsttime – at a total of 13locations in Germany,France,Austria, Italy,Switzerland andScandinavia. The PistenBully has a completely new con-trol system. How did you get on with it?

I got on with it very well. Even though the new joy-stick is quite different from the joystick in thePistenBully 300 Polar that I am used to.

What is your impression of the driver’sarea?

The driver’s area is truly phenomenal! All the con-trols are easy to reach and are always in view.

What do you think of the new driver’s cab,the large windows and the new driver’sseat?

The cab is very spacious, and the field of vision isnow considerably greater than before.Excellentwork! As far as the driver’s seat is concerned, Iwould prefer a somewhat higher backrest.

What do you particularly like?

I find the lighting particularly good!

How do you rate the reliability ofthis PistenBully?

More than good! There were no pro-blems with the machine anywhere.

And what is the climbing perfor-mance like?

Climbing performance is excellent.

Does that also apply to pushingpower and fuel consumption?

Yes,as the fuel consumption is muchless than that of the PistenBully 300Polar.The pushing power is really “bru-tish”– you can tell that the settingshave been modified.

Is the new PistenBully maintenance-friendly?

Yes,as all information relating to the vehicle isvery clearly displayed.Furthermore, the newdisplays make it considerably easier to locate anyelectronics faults that may occur.

What impressed you most about thePistenBully 600? What aspects of thismachine would you highlight?

There is a whole range of aspects: the maximumtorque at low speed, the large window area, thelighting and the good sound insulation in the cab.But ultimately, it was the power of this vehicle thatimpressed me – the power in every respect!

Interview with Roberto Tommaselli – Funivie Folgarida e Marilleva AG

service parts can be kept low because they are compatible with 300Polar parts. The new diagnostic capability allows any faults that mayoccur to be traced even more quickly.”His colleague Carlo Danioth,Slope and Rescue Manager at Andermatt Gotthard Sportbahnen, was mainly interested in the “internal values”of the new PistenBully.

“Economy is very important to me.Reliability, low fuel consumptionand levelling performance requirements are met in full.Kässbohreris a reliable partner company that is always there to back me up.”

“The telephone is like oxygen for him,”his bossonce said. And he means it in the best possibleway. For Johann, better knownas Giovanni Leitner,Managerof Technical Service in Italy, isparticularly proud that manyrepairs can literally be carriedout “over the phone”.“Goodservice also means helpingour customers quickly. If youdo not have to be on site to dothis, but can solve the pro-blems by phone, so much thebetter,” is his opinion.

Giovanni Leitner, who celebra-ted his 50th birthday last year, joined Kässbohrer in 1979 aspart of his technician’s course.Acolleague,at that time anemployee of Kässbohrer –Setra Omnibuses, drew hisattention to PistenBully.

Only a short time later, the changeover was com-plete.At that time, just two members of staff were

responsible forPistenBully custo-mer service in thewhole of Italy.Andwhen,on one occa-sion,his colleaguewas indisposed,Giovanni Leitnertook over soleresponsibility forthe whole countryfor two months in1980 as a travellingfitter. After a shortinterlude as a self-employed motorcy-cle mechanic, in1985 Leitner wasappointed Head ofTechnical Service inthe former

Kässbohrer head office in Modena. However, heonly held this post in the Po lowlands until 1990.Then,on becoming a father,he had a welcomereason to return to his home town of Brixen in themountains.Kässbohrer and PistenBully followedhim only five years later. After becoming an inde-pendent company,Kässbohrer GeländefahrzeugAG subsequently moved its headquarters to theAlpine region – to Bozen, the capital of SouthTyrol.

Giovanni Leitner has enjoyed his work over theyears, even though it has sometimes beenextreme. He particularly remembers changing awater heater.“When the coolant runs into yourgloves at minus 36 degrees, that is very cold,”hesays when describing his worst experience.“Andwhen the pressure gauge also gives up the ghost, you know that it is really icy.”He finds the conver-sion of PistenBully machines much more enjoya-ble.Together with his team,he once even set up avehicle for use in the rice fields of the Po lowlands.“We effectively made a tractor out of this PistenBully

with all the necessary attachment points at thefront and rear for the machines needed by the ricefarmers,”he remembers. With its wide tracks andcorresponding footprint, the vehicle proved to bethe ideal helper in the flooded fields. In the end, however, his hard work did not lead to an order –the customer decided on a conventional unit.Perhaps the PistenBully was too ostentatious forhim after all.

In winter, the PistenBully rules Giovanni Leitner’slife. What he doesn’t find time for in the winter, hemakes up for in the summer. Then his hobbies takepriority:his family and his camper van.Together, they go on extended tours and recharge their bat-teries. For the next winter is sure to come.

The winter has been hard and long.Another reason to pay particular atten-tion to the PistenBully summer inspection. This involves a close examinationof individual components, such as the suspension, which is subject to heavyloading – especially on difficult terrain.

When inspecting the vehicle chassis, particular attention should be paid tocarefully checking the front snow tiller and snow blower connections.Checking the seals on the engine, hydraulics and all attachments is alsorecommended. The main units such as the diesel engine, gearbox andhydraulic pump motors require specialist maintenance and care, such asvalve adjustment, checking of pressures and, if necessary, compression mea-surement.

The adjustment of hydraulic pressures, for example, is a job that is necessaryfor guaranteeing the performance of all hydraulic circuits so that the machinewill again be fully serviceable for the following winter season.

It is essential that attachments such as the MultiFlex snow tiller and thewinch, if appropriate, are not overlooked when carrying out the work.Ofcourse, the highly stressed hydraulic hoses used require special mainte-nance.

In order that the summer inspection may be carried out professionally,Kässbohrer Geländefahrzeug AG is once more offering several training cour-ses covering all aspects of a PistenBully.

These include:■ Getting to know the different vehicle types■ Getting to know the individual vehicle assemblies■ Using the spare parts catalogue■ Approved fuels and lubricants■ Maintenance and care■ Tips and information on summer overhauls■ Maintenance work on the diesel engine, hydraulics, gearbox, chassis,

frame,chains and attachments

A total of six two-day training courses will be offered in May.Participation isfree for PistenBully customers – you only have to pay for travel costs andaccommodation. The exact dates of the training courses can be found on theInternet at www.pistenbully.com in the “Service”section. You can also regi-ster online here.

It has long been a cult for insiders: snowboardingin the middle of summer – enjoyment and partyingin the best weather and at pleasant temperatures.A Mecca for this sport is the “Monte Kaolino”, the

sand dune of the Franconian chinaclay works in Amberg. Here, theMonte Kaolino Ski Club Hirschauregularly stages the sandboarding

world championships, which were held for the15th time last year.

Naturally, sandboardersalso require a perfect slope.Sufficient reason for theMonte Kaolino Ski ClubHirschau to test what aPistenBully could do onsand. They used aPistenBully 260DW with a6-metre smoothing board. The winch demonstrationshowed what the vehicle was capable of.The standards were high,as the 400-metre-long slope is extremely steep anddemanding. However, the PistenBullyeasily succeeded in perfectly smoothing

out the deep tracks that the sandboarders hadmade in the slope during the slalom.

Sandboarding is still rather a cult sport. But whoknows? Perhaps PistenBully machines will soon

be a familiar sight not only in the Alps but also onthe Monte Kaolino or on the dunes of the Sahara.

Test run on the Monte Kaolino

PistenBully on the sand dune

Outside the sun blazes in thesky at more than 30 degrees, and there is a choice betweencamels and luxury sports carsas means of transport. Inside, around 6,000 tons of snowprovide a special type of skienjoyment, perfectly shapedby a PistenBully 100 Indoor.

The new Dubai SunnyMountain Ski Dome is a super-lative indoor facility. The hall inthe centre of the city covers anarea the size of three footballfields.More than 1,500 peoplecan enjoy themselves simulta-neously on five slopes with dif-ferent degrees of difficulty, and hurl themselves into the400-metre-long descents on skis, snowboards or tobog-gans. It feels like a completely different world,as the inte-

rior is modelled on familiar alpine winter sports areas.Thisextends to the planting of alpine conifers, for which youcan otherwise search in vain in the desert state.Evenaprès-ski is provided for, whether in the fine restaurant orin the “St.Moritz Café”.And the facility also offers alpinestandards when it comes to caring for the slopes. The dri-vers,who otherwise never come into contact with snow inDubai, have therefore been thoroughly trained byKässbohrer for their new task.

The new Dubai Sunny Mountain Ski Dome is part ofDubailand,a gigantic leisure park.225 million euros havebeen invested in the construction of the ski dome alone, and the whole complex of approximately 18 millionsquare metres is expected to cost about 4.5 billion. Inreturn, you can switch from the Alps to one of the fiveother theme parks – for example straight to the tropicalrainforest – without making a long journey.

Kässbohrer Geländefahrzeug AG has expanded its range of tracked motor vehi-cles.The company has acquired the product rights of the manufacturer Lite-Foot,which has been established on the North American market for more thanten years. With this track-driven all-terrain vehicle, the company intends to ser-vice target groups such as energy and maintenance companies, telecommuni-cations companies, transport and environmental protection organisations andcivil defence and disaster control organisations.

The vehicles will be produced and marketed by Kässbohrer GeländefahrzeugAG’s subsidiary in the USA – Kässbohrer All Terrain Vehicles Inc.of Reno,Nevada. This product is mainly intended to service the North American market. There are currently no plans for marketing in Europe.Around 100 PistenBullyScout are expected to be sold in the USA in the next five years. This is a light-weight all-terrain vehicle that can be used for transporting up to 10 people.Thevehicle is particularly distinguished by its economy and its many potential appli-cations.With this vehicle,Kässbohrer Geländefahrzeug AG hopes to serve amarket segment not covered by the current PistenBully product family. With itsPistenBully and BeachTech product lines,Kässbohrer Geländefahrzeug AG is the pre-mium supplier and worldwide market lea-der in the niche sectors of snow groomersand beach cleaners.

It goes its own way,has a strong character andfeels most at home in the mountains. These are thecharacteristics that distinguish both a genuine

inhabitant of the Grisons and a genuinePistenBully. No wonder therefore that theCalanda Brewery was not satisfied with any old

car when it cameto choosing a newpromotional vehi-cle. It had to be aPistenBully.Ultimately, theparticular charac-ter of this Swissbeer speciality alsohad to be conveyedby an extraordinaryvehicle.

The yellow PistenBullywith the distinctiveCalanda ibex has there-fore been used on the slo-pes around Laax since the2004/2005 winter season.Butas it would have been such a pity to simply leavethis extraordinary advertising medium in thegarage over the summer, it was also put to use in

the low season and attended dif-ferent events throughout thelowlands. The high point wasthe street parade in Zurich, where the Calanda PistenBullywas converted into a “love-mobile”, thus providing aneffective setting for the beerfrom the mountains.

Calanda is different fromall other beers by tradition.

This beer has been brewedin Chur with pure mountain

spring water since 1780 and has retai-ned its unique character to the present day.

Calanda is therefore not just any beer, but a beerwith a home and a character.

Swiss brewers rely on PistenBully

An ideal flagship

Juhu Beach,ChowpattyBeach,Versova Beach –these are the names of themagnificent beaches ofMumbai.Until recently still asecret and visited predomi-nantly by local inhabitants, these beaches are increasin-gly attracting demandingwestern tourists. Just as Goaand the whole of the Konkancoast with its wonderfulbeaches have recently beendiscovered by tourism, sothe state of Maharashtra isalso beginning to open up its beaches and naturallandscapes.

Three years ago, the government of Mumbai star-ted improving the attractiveness of its beacheswith the help of modern beach cleaning equip-ment.The cleaning companies were asked to bringtheir fleets up to date in order to ensure reliableoperation and the best results. The decision wasmade at that stage to opt for the KässbohrerBeachTech.Since then,a total of five BeachTechmachines have been ensuring that the JuhuBeach,Chowpatty Beach and Versova Beach havebeen kept clean.During these five years, the fleethas been expanded and a further five BeachTech2000 now ply their trade in this magical land of

contrasts.Operating in this exotic region takes itstoll on the vehicle equipment.Simple, reliable androbust technology is required, which can copewith the long and hard assignments and can beeasily maintained by municipal personnel.Thecontrol of the vehicles must also be simple andeasy to understand.

The Indian tractors have a very simple design.Forexample, they have only one hydraulic circuit.TheBeachTech 2000 hydraulics must therefore also bemodified accordingly. In addition, the power ofthe tractors is considerably less than in Europe. This is no problem for BeachTech,as all BeachTechunits give maximum performance even at low horse-power.

All the different technical requirements of the dif-ferent regions of the world have already beentaken into account in the vehicle design.Even low-powered 2-wheel tractors are able to pull thefinely balanced BeachTech and achieve optimumcleaning performance due to the well thought-outconstruction.

Mumbai has to thank the coming together of dif-ferent cultural and historical influences for its uni-que position as a young, lively and above all multi-ethnic Indian city. The capital of Maharashtra –until 1995 known as Bombay – has recalled itsown tradition with the old name and thus its ownstrengths.

Anyone landing in Mumbai for the first time willget a surprise. The town has long since arrived inthe modern age,and has acquired an Americanskyline with the skyscrapers of the banks andindustrial companies.Today, this is where thefinancial and commercial pulse of the countrybeats.Today, half of India’s foreign trade is carriedout via Mumbai. The port has blossomed into oneof the most important transhipment locations onthe Arabian Sea.Almost nineteen million people

live here.Wealthy industrialists, famous film stars, international artists, labourers, teachers andsecretaries who are equally at home in highflyingskyscrapers and the far-flung shanty towns.Theyhave widely differing ethnic backgrounds andspeak more than a dozen languages. But Mumbaialso reflects the glamour of the Bollywood cinemain its everyday life and offers a fascinating mix ofwestern and oriental lifestyles. Film studios andnoble hotels, western architecture, bhelpuri (apopular snack) on Chowpatty Beach, cricket in allthe squares and marketplaces,up-and-comingtourism and depressing squalor.

Tourism in particular makes an active contributionto the fight against poverty, for it creates new jobsand brings an economic upswing.BeachTech ispart of this, and ensures that the visitors are satis-fied with progressive beach cleaning.

Practical tips:

Sealing a planetary gearbox

Open the planetary gearbox that has been supplied or removed. To do this, remove the 4 screwsand take off the bearing cover.

Coat the clean running surface with special sealant (Loctite 573). Make sure that the sealant is applied uniformly andthinly.

After carrying out the described repair work, carefully refit the bearing cover and screw in place. Todo this, apply a small amount of grease to the shaft sealing rings.

Fit the repair wear ring (Speedy Sleeve) and slide on as far as the bearing.

The bearing cover must be cleaned to remove all grease after removing the worn shaft sealing rings. Apply a thin coatingof special sealant (Loctite 573) to the new shaft sealing rings before fitting.

Clean the running surface of the shaft sealing ring. The surface must be dry and free from grease.
