USE OF FIRE HYDRANTS

FIRST CALL 911 TO REPORT A FIRE

OUR LOCATION:Liberty Woodlands/Liberty Lane is on Hwy 20 11 miles from Winthrop in the direction of Mazama or 3 miles from Mazama toward Winthrop. We are also located halfway between mile posts 182 and 183.

BEST USE: The Liberty Woodlands fire hydrants can be used best for managing and or putting out a grass or woodlands fire. You may also wish to use the fire hoses if you are burning a woodpile.

Gather the following from the fire shed (corner of Liberty La and Ponderosa):

One or more fire hoses that hang on the outside of the water/fire shed (corner of Liberty La and Ponderosa. One or two hoses can be carried by a person or drive your car to the fire shed.

Each hose is approximately 45 feet long. Additional hoses are located inside the

locked water shed. : 24-14-4

IF THE RISERS HAVE BEEN TURNED OFF FOR THE SEASON gather the following: Rebar tool (T shaped) - that is hung on the

outside of the fire shed - used for opening the underground hydrant valves.

Step one – Hydrants on for the season:Take the hoses to the hydrant nearest the fire. There are 7 hydrants located on the right side of the Liberty Lane loop (inner loop side) as you drive clockwise; on the left side as you drive counterclockwise. There is one hydrant accessed from the outside of the fire shed. There is no hydrant on Ponderosa.

Step one - Hydrants off. Take hoses and rebar tool to the hydrant nearest the fire

Remove the cap on the marked white (4”) or light green (6”) standing tube nearest the fire hydrant. To lift and remove the cap use the rebar small tool end to gently tap up under the rim and lift the cap off.

To open the valve, insert the rebar tool into the

tube to engage the valve. Turn the tool ¼ (only) turn counterclockwise. It is very important not to turn the valve more or less than ¼ turn.Step two:Attach the fire hose to the fire hydrant. Attach a second hose to the first. (There’s a male and a female end to each hose.)

Step three:Move the nozzle to the area of the fire BEFORE TURNING THE WATER ON.Step four:Turn the water on at the hydrant.
