Finnish Maritime Industry: setting the course for world markets

Finnish maritime industry is grounded on strong tradition. We Finns are known globally for our skills in shipbuilding and the production of marine engines, propulsion systems, specialized integrated solutions and Arctic know-how. Our marine industry involves many global brands, products and companies that are setting the course for world markets.

These products and services are provided by a group of core companies – global players in their segments. Also our ship design and engineering companies, as well as our ship energy efficiency related companies, are world class.

The offshore market and its constant expansion have also offered a lot of opportunities for Finnish shipbuilding and for the whole marine industry as well. The Finnish offshore industry comprises of approximately 150 active companies. The total exports of the industry in 2014 amounted to 1.7 billion euros, technology being the most important of the industry’s segments.

Offshore activities demand special vessels, supply and icebreakers, all of which are Finnish expertises. Finnish offshore-related offerings also include state-of-the-art ports and terminals, ship on-board cargo solutions, spar hulls, advanced offshore structures and the solutions needed for energy efficiency and environmentally friendly maritime operations.

Finnish marine industry responds to the offshore challenge

Oil price variation have a direct effect on the offshore oil and gas industry. Despite the recent drop in the price level, the outlook for the oil and gas industry is positive in the long run. Oil is still going to be the primary energy source for quite some time. Offshore oil exploration, which enters deeper and harsher environments, will set the demand for even more advanced subsea vessels and equipment. Also the Blue Growth (sustainable growth) area and the increasing activities to exploit the yet untapped offshore opportunities of the oceans will set new business opportunities for the marine and offshore industry.

Offshore sector is one of the six major sectors of Finnish marine industry. The strengths of the Finnish offshore companies are high Nordic quality standards, timely deliveries, the Nordic network and cost effectiveness. Especially, the Finnish marine industry is awesome in building complex products and solutions: it is appreciated around the world for state of the art arctic competence and concept development for different kinds of vessel types. Moreover, Finnish companies operate globally and, they are forerunners for instance in environmentally friendly solutions, like LNG, energy efficient design and solutions for pollution prevention.

The offshore industry employs some five thousand people in Finland, one in four of the whole marine industry. The offshore companies also provide products for many industries, which gives them wide and multi-industrial competence. Recently, marine companies have increasingly invested in the offshore sector know how. Finland has solutions for various offshore sectors, from FPSO design to oil spill recovery and complex offshore support vessels.

The wide experience of the Finnish marine supplier network is well adapted for offshore products. Material and system suppliers manufacture top quality products such as environmentally friendly engines aimed at conserving the environment, and the most advanced propulsion systems with high energy efficiency. Finnish turn-key companies are able to deliver complete spaces for vessels, like fully equipped kitchens and cabin modules. Design offices offer concept design, research and development services.

The Finnish marine network of around 500 companies works closely together in order to

develop the products and services further to answer to the customer needs. The companies can also provide bigger concepts and larger entities by working together. The main focus of Finnish marine industry research remains to be offshore and Arctic technologies together with luxury cruisers. Remote operations and user experience are one of the emerging fields of the development. Also operations in the harsh and demanding arctic conditions, and for example the winterization challenges, remain to be among the main research topics. Safety is also high priority in Finnish research.

Continuous development ensures Finnish industry can offer top class products with safe and environmentally solutions for the offshore market.
