Kemira’s projects in reducing phosphorus discharge from wastewater treatment plants is now improving water quality in water bodies all over the world in areas such as the Baltic Sea.

The dominating process for the removal of phosphorus is chemical precipitation. Typically it is done with aluminum and iron coagulants before the biological treatment but phosphorus can also be precipitated in the biological treatment or as the final step of the treatment process.

Design VE-Limno software calculates water current nutrient balance and eutrophication, as well as a forecast of future development. VE-Ekosimu software predict the oxygen evolution of the situation, as well as tailoring the oxidation and aerators.

Oxidation and aeration The rehabilitation of the water is often the most important part of the project areas. Then oxidation or aeration is used. This reduces the oxygen in addition to wastewater nitrogen load on water iron and manganese, as well as blue-green algae blooms. Naturally, it will also improve fish habitats.

When the surface is sufficiently oxygenated, Mixox-oxidation is cost effective way to oxidize the water on the ground floor. Mixox pumps surface water from the basement and provides a peaceful and quite broad water cycle. One unit sphere of influence varies from 50 to 500 hectares, depending on the dimensions. If the surface water can not be used for oxidation, Visiox is effective way to move the vessel to atmospheric oxygen into the water. Visiox is also often used to aid Mixox oxidation, for example, in winter time, where the oxygen resources are at a minimum. This is to ensure a sufficient water quantity of oxygen and to avoid stocks and other biota damage.
