The Finnish Film Foundation

The Finnish Film Foundation was founded in 1969 as an independent foundation operating under the supervision of the Ministry of Education and Culture. In granting support, the Foundation is guided by the State Aid Act, the Film Promotion Act and Decree as well as the European Commission notification on state funding for film. The Foundation receives its funding from lottery and pools funds allocated for promoting film art.

The Finnish Film Foundation is responsible for the cultural export and international promotion of Finnish films. Our aim is to increase the visibility of Finnish films and aid their international distribution. Major international film festivals offer Finnish films an important channel to foreign markets. We aim to find the appropriate international venue for each film in order to reach its target audience. Festival distribution is complemented by Finnish film

weeks organized around the world in partnership with Finnish embassies and cultural institutes.

The Finnish Film Foundation participates in film markets at the Berlin, Cannes and Toronto Film Festivals together with other Nordic film institutes under the ‘Scandinavian Films’ banner. To promote short and documentary films, The Nordic film institutes and the Finnish Film Foundation cooperate at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival in France, International Documentary Film Festival (IDFA) in Amsterdam, and at the Nordisk Panorama event.

The Finnish Film Foundation supports and promotes the Finnish film industry. The Film Foundation provides support for professional film production and the exhibition and distribution of films. The Foundation is also responsible for the cultural export of Finnish film and provides support for the international promotion of films.

Co-production funding from The Finnish Film FoundationIn 2014, The Foundation handed out around €23 million in subsidies for the production, distribution and exhibition of films. Production support is given to an average of 78 films per year. Support is available for feature films, short films, documentaries, animations and television series. The Foundation’s support makes up around 30 percent of the average feature film budget. The rest of the average budget is made up by television and distribution companies, the producers’ own investment and financing from domestic and international funds and investments.

International co-productions are also eligible for production support from The Finnish Film Foundation when a Finnish co-producer is involved. In the past three years, The Finnish Film Foundation has handed out over €10 million in production support for international co-productions. The Foundation’s support can in most cases cover up to 50 percent of the production costs for the Finnish co-producing partner.

The Support Application is made by the Finnish co-producer. There are no fixed deadlines for applying but it is recommend that the Finnish coproduction partner is brought in at as early a stage as possible. The amount of production support for minority co-productions has traditionally ranged from €50.000 to €500.000, depending on the Finnish creative/technical input.

Support eligibility for co-productions is determined with the following criteria:

• Involvement of a Finnish co-producer with

• Finnish distribution rights

• Artistic and/or technical input from Finland

• Distribution of some kind in

Finland

• Relevance of the project for

Finnish audiences

• Possibilities for an ongoing co-

operation between the parties

Aamu Film Company Ltd was founded in 2001, and we have produced both fiction and documentary films in various lengths. We have both won prizes and made mistakes – but fortunately learned from both of them. Over the years, we have noticed that the art of cinema is serious fun. If we do not like something, we do not do it. But when we do, we give it all. That is what we are good at. We aim to build long relationships with directors and screenwriters who have a unique approach to filmmaking. We usually start from short films and proceed to international feature films in order to make their style, content and ensemble to reach their peak. We know that content always shapes the form. We know that every film making process has to be custom-made for the content in question.
