A MESSAGE FROM THE IRVING ART ASSOCIATION EXHIBITS COMMITTEE COMMITTEE

The Irving Art Association has been a part of the Irving Community for 61 years and for 31 of those years it has been our honor to present the Annual Texas and Neighbors Regional Art Exhibition. It is truly a blessing for us to be able to provide a venue for artists in the state Texas and the five neighboring states to express their creativity and artistic ability. We have fallen in love with this event and continue to be impressed and awed by the talent and beauty displayed each year.

Thank you to the tireless efforts of the Irving Art Board and the Irving Arts Center staff, Irving Art Association and to all of the volunteers who enable us to successfully produce this amazing event year after year.

The Chocolate Rose and their gifted designers deserve special recognition for the floral art reproductions they create to adorn the gallery for the awards ceremony, and as always their work is incomparable.

Special appreciation also goes out to our extremely talented Juror, Soon Warren. Soon is an absolute pleasure to work with, so professional and so gifted.

The Irving Art Association Exhibit Committee also thanks you for supporting this event with your attendance and is confident you will you will fall in love with this event as well.

CONGRATULATIONS!

A NOTE FROMTHE JUROR

First I want to express my deep appreciation to every participant. My only regret is that I could not choose every painting for the award that everyone deserve. If I did not select your painting for an award, please do not be discouraged. Keep entering competitions! The same work of art overlooked by one juror may win best of show next time. As a fellow artist, I have had the same experience. The strong quality and creativity demonstrated in every painting made the selection process very difficult.

I enjoy paintings with passion and attitude, and which have any of the following: strong composition, expression of color, confident draftsmanship, or any combination of these elements. Witnessing the unique perspective of each artist, with emphasis on surprising aspects of otherwise ordinary subject matter, is always invigorating and inspirational. I appreciate how and why one paints rather than what one paints. My goal is to approach each painting with a fresh mind, without any preconceived prejudice, to minimize projecting the bias and subjectivity of human nature on the selection process.

Without hard work by the organizing committee, process of a juried competition is not possible. I express my great appreciation and gratitude to the committee, which madethis great show possible for everyone to enjoy. It is also an honor and a privilege for meas a juror to be part of the outstandingly creative exhibition. I thank and congratulate every participant who share their talents with public. Sincerely,Soon Y. Warren

A MESSAGE FROM THE IRVING ARTS CENTER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

When I think about the future, both my own personal future and that of the Irving Arts Center, my mind immediately recalls a quote by hockey great, Wayne Gretzky. The quote came to me via Ben Cameron, President of the Jerome Foundation. During his keynote at the Emerging Arts Leaders Symposium at American University, Mr. Cameron recited the following quote, in regards to the future of the arts:

“I skate to where the puck will be, not where it has been.” – Wayne Gretzky

As artists and arts administrators we have an opportunity to change the way current arts organizations operate, by exploring new ideas, new values, and new models. Over the next few years, we will navigate through the largest generational shift in decades. Who will our audiences be in twenty years and how will be serve them?

While I cannot predict the future, I am encouraged by the work of arts organizations like the Irving Art Association. Through consistent programming that engages their patrons not only as spectators, but as participants, the Irving Arts Association is working across generational and demographic barriers to sustain their current audience, while striving to engage new audiences in new ways.

By partnering with the Irving Art Association on exhibits like the 31st Annual Texas & Neighbors Regional Art Exhibition, we are building a community of local artists and arts audiences. It allows both organizations to remain connected, combine resources, and skate to where the audiences are going, not where they have been.

Congratulations to all of the artists exhibited in the 31st Annual Texas and Neighbors exhibition. It is truly and honor to be a partner and a member of the community.

2016 Texas and Neighbors Signature Artists

This years’ recipient of the Irving Art

Association’s Visual Arts Scholarship

has had a passion for drawing and

doodling since an early age.

However she did not actually take

her talent seriously until in her

sophomore year in high school when

she entered the Visual Arts

Scholastic Event and qualified to

compete at the state level. This was

a tremendous boost to her

confidence and when she again

qualified in her junior year there was

no doubt she was destined to

commit her life to the visual arts.

Today Jessica Hernandez currently

attends MacArthur High School in

Irving, Texas. After graduating in

June she will attend the College for

Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan.

Congratulations Jessica for being

the 2016 recipient of the Irving Art

Associations Visual Arts Scholarship.

The Irving Art Association is one of Irving’s oldest

cultural groups founded by a small group of local artists

in January 1956. Over the years we have expanded our

programming to include the education of our members

and the community. Some of the ways we do this is by

providing lectures, demonstrations, workshops,

exhibitions, and art classes all of which are open to the

public. So come and join us at one of our monthly

meetings or other events and we’ll help you to discover

your inner artist.
