One of the most interesting pictures is no 408 aportrait of Oliver Cromwell by Sir Peter Lely � The story connected withthis picture adds to its interest. When the persecution of the WaldensianProtestants (whose suffering Milton has immortalized in his beautiful ode)had reached its height the Lord Protector of England determined to arrestits course, he accordingly sent a message to the Pope Alexander VII that ifthese barbarities did not cease he would send the English Fleet up theTiber. The result was an order to the Duke of Savoy to stay his hand. TheGrand Duke of Tuscany Ferdinand II was so struck by the courage &character of Cromwell that he requested him to sit for this picture whichLely then a young man painted.
