As a county, Dorset has always had plenty
of pulling power. Its attractions range from
the stunning Jurassic coast to the enchanting
market towns, not to mention a complete
absence of motorway. But over the last few
years, the county has achieved a new claim to
fame; not only
has the status
of the coastline
been officially
recognised
with its
designation
as a world
heritage site,
its artistic
value has now
also been
brought to all
of our notice
by the huge
success of
internationally
acclaimed
artist Rebecca Lardner.
Rebecca’s work has an upbeat, quirky charm
that perfectly captures the new mood of the
South West, which has transformed itself from
a remote, ex-industrial hinterland into an
ultra-desirable destination for a whole cross
section of society, from surfers and ravers to
TV chefs and affluent second-homers. Her
engaging canvases are animated portrayals of
a hectic life lived on the land and the sea. The
large ensemble cast of figures, boats and sea
birds creates a lively impression of ceaseless
activity, and this is heightened by the natural
curves of the classic English harbour which
provide a strong sense of movement and
energy.
But life on the
coast is not just
about beaches
and fishing; there
are wildflowers,
dog walkers,
children enjoying
a Punch and Judy
show, and a whole
range of bijou
establishments
from antique shops
to harbour cafes.
All life is here,
and the bustling
characters are
making the most of it, under the watchful eye
of those superior seabirds, watching over
the whole scene from their lofty viewpoint.
These beguiling characters have become an
important part of the overall mood of the
work. Their presence invites us to join them
in their grandstand seats, and reinforces the
sense of ourselves as part of the magical
world that Rebecca has created.
“Every one captures happy, sunny memories of being near the sea and is filled with my own life history and personality.”

and her love of the distinctive Jurassic
coastline has been the mainstay of her
success. Trained in art to degree level, she
forged an early career in illustration, but her
future as a fine artist was always inevitable.
While she downplays the mention of celebrity
buyers and a one-off commission for the Paul
McCartney Music Academy, she is no longer
able to downplay her extraordinary success.
When she won a major newcomer’s award
in 2008 she was catapulted into the limelight
and this was swiftly followed in 2010 by the
prestigious Fine Art Trade Guild’s Artist of the
Year award. Her whimsical paintings were
featured widely in the media, and demand
for her work turned her into one of the UK’s
most highly sought-after and collectable
artists. Her signed limited editions now sell
out on publication and her original paintings
are almost impossible to come by. They
are sold as far afield as Australia and New
Zealand, often to homesick ex-pats wanting
a glimpse of home. They are also proving
popular in London and other cities, perhaps
as a source of inspiration for those dreaming
of their weekend escape to the coast.
Rebeccas quintessentially British style originates in her Dorset upbringing...
HITCHING A RIDEEdition of 495 Cold Cast PorcelainSize 9” x 15” £395
Working from an attic studio, Rebecca
employs an unconventional style to create her
paintings. Using oil on canvas she works not
at an easel, but on a flat surface, turning the
canvas as she gradually builds the complex
structure of the work from above. First a thin
layer of block colour is laid down and allowed
to dry over several days. After that she applies
layer upon layer with a palette knife to create
texture, and adding the finer details with a
brush. This unusual method of turning the
canvas and taking a view of the scene from
above seems strangely in keeping with the
subject matter of the finished compositions.
“Rebeccas distinctive palette never strays far from the colours of the ocean...”

This enchanting quintet of sculptures
brings to life some of the quirkier
characters who feature strongly in
Rebecca’s world as well as the familiar
trawlers that patrol her busy coastline. Her
previous sculptures of birds have proved
hugely successful, selling out on release,
so these new additions to the flock are
very welcome. Meanwhile, the beguiling
boats are as much a part of Rebecca’s cast
of characters as the gulls, and their stylish
colours and presentation will only serve to
enhance their popularity.

Stylistically gifted, technically flawless
and endlessly fascinating, Fabian
is collected, acclaimed and adored
across the world. His compelling style
is unmistakable, and combines with
his highly personal subject matter to
make him one of the world’s most
recognisable artistic icons.
With Cinco Sentidos, (Five Senses),
Fabian demonstrates his extraordinary
gifts for both figurative and still life
works. Taking us way beyond the visual
world, he mounts an all-out appeal
to our senses. As well as seeing the
light, colour and movement of each
scene, we are invited to hear the beat
of the flamenco, feel the heat of a
close embrace, and experience the
taste and aroma of fine wines shared
with friends. The interweaving of these
different ways to experience the world
makes Fabian’s work a unique sensory
experience.
Fabian’s international cachet has
long been established. His celebrity
admirers range from sporting
superstars including Sugar Ray
Leonard, Shaquille O’Neal and Lionel
Messi, to musicians Scott Weiland,
Rihanna and Shakira, comedian John
Bishop, actors Micky Rourke and
Megan Fox, and he was recently invited
to the Vatican to personally present
Pope Francis with his portrait; it is now
in the pontiff’s private collection. He
has also received a host of prestigious
awards from bodies as diverse as the
Italian Academy of Artists and Art Tour
International Magazine.

While sensuality and intensity are
key to Fabian’s work, there is always
a sophistication and intelligence to
his figures which implies something
beyond the purely visual. His
charismatic men and seductive women
seem to be part of a wider narrative,
one which embraces mystery, eroticism
and drama. The Train Station is
characterised by an atmosphere of
shadowy intimacy suggesting romance,
passion, ‘a happening’ that draws us
into a world of heightened senses
where a story is unfolding that we can
make our own.

Fabian has a deep and heartfelt
connection with the flamenco which
represents a major part of his personal
heritage, handed down to him by his
Spanish father. It has a unique style,
purpose and impact, and makes a
powerful subject for him.
There is a strong improvisational
and creative element to flamenco, as
no dance is set in stone, but rather
each evolves from the spontaneous
expression of the performer’s emotions
at any given time. In a flamenco
performance, the dancer (bailaora) will
often remain motionless, absorbing the
rhythm of the guitar, the clapping and
the singing, waiting until the moment of
inspiration strikes. She will then begin
her passionate response to the music
and the atmosphere. The dancer’s role
is to physically interpret the words,
which often express the great lament
of the persecuted gypsy communities
in which the dance first grew up. The
light, graceful arm movements contrast
with the reverberating steps as her
feet drill into the floor with almost
bewildering intensity. The flamenco is
a key subject for Fabian, and there are
clear parallels between his paintings
and the dance on every level, not least
in that both represent the creative
outpouring of a passionate emotional
response to life.

While many of Fabian’s paintings are concerned with emotions such as
passion and desire, camaraderie is also a recurring theme. This bond
of friendship, often between men is symbolized and celebrated in these
two magnificent still life works. Fabian says he paints only from his own
experience – and every glass of wine he paints, he also enjoyed.
“Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world and one of the most natural things of the world that has been brought to the greatest perfection, and it offers a greater range for enjoyment and appreciation than, possibly, any other purely sensory thing.”
Ernest Hemingway, Author.

Vincent Kamp’s intense figurative
realism originates in a series of
subcultures that are rich in narrative
tension. His arresting portraits are
built on the assumption that society
will always identify with rebels and the
gritty world of the urban underground,
and take us on a dangerous journey
into worlds which are perhaps
unfamiliar to many – a world of tribes
and groups who are drawn together by
a unique set of bonds created by the
subculture to which they belong. This
concept fascinates him, and underlies
his whole creative ethos; to express
something unique, and sometimes
challenging, through capturing the
strangely haunting identities of these
enigmatic and to some, intimidating,
social groupings.

“My two favourite places in the world are my studio and my local cinema.” Vincent works in a 50sqm studio with
amazing views of the North Downs, but
he has unexpectedly blocked out the
windows, partly to avoid distraction,
but mainly in order to take full control
of the lighting at all times. He describes
his work as traditional figurative
realism with a film noir influence and
his subdued palette is dark, subtle and
intense. He says: “I look for something
gritty, something that may have an
intriguing backstory, a moment of
tension. Something that will make you
wonder about these characters. Who
are they? What goes on in the moments
before and after the painting?” He is
fascinated by cinematography and
its impact on storytelling, believing
that by manipulating the lighting and
colour you can completely change the
feel of scene. He acknowledges his
great artistic debt to legendary British
cinematographer Roger Deakins, whose
collaboration with the Coen brothers
has led to some of the most memorable
moments in movie history, and whose
contribution to such blockbusters as No
Country For Old Men, Skyfall and The
Shawshank Redemption elevated them
into truly beautiful works of art.

Having been sponsored by American
Crew, the premier brand of grooming
products for the modern gentleman,
Kamp is wholly tied up in image and
how it reveals or indeed conceals one’s
personality. Exploring those physical
marks and characteristics that identify
the insiders – from such explicit
features as tattoos to the more esoteric
concepts of expression and body
language - Kamp is now on a journey
moving from one subculture to the
next, and where it will take him next
remains to be seen.
For his most recent work he has
travelled around the UK visiting barber
shops and events to gather material
in a setting which transcends the
conventional
notions of social
class and makes
everyone feel like
‘one of the boys’. The
men he has met and
painted are part of a unique
community with their own
language, culture and style.
Each compelling tableau evokes
emotion, fascination and intrigue
about both the backstory and the
future of a character. He seeks out
moments of tension, and explains: “My
paintings are all quite dark, subtle and
intense. I’m always imagining there’s
something surreptitious going on in
what might be a perfectly innocent
situation.”
“I like to paint people that you dont always see walking down the street. They live and work outside the normal hours. You are unlikely to see these people in a suit or on an iPhone”
