DRAMA

Sundays at 9 p.m. beginning January 13

This month, we are thrilled to present the highly-

anticipated new season of this phenomenal drama. It is

1848, and revolution is breaking out across Europe. In

Britain, one woman stands between order and chaos:

Queen Victoria. Jenna Coleman stars as the young but

fearless monarch, facing a crisis that threatens to end

her reign.

As Season 3 gets underway, Victoria is pregnant

with her sixth child. But she has much else on her

mind, chiefly the Revolutions of 1848, when the down-

trodden throughout Europe begin agitating for the

overthrow of aristocratic rule. In England, this discon-

tent leads to Chartism, a set of demands for universal

male suffrage, the secret ballot, equal representation

for voters and other reforms. As with many crusades,

passions are aroused on both sides — sometimes

violently. At the time, who knew if events might turn

out like the French Revolution, which resorted to

widespread use of the guillotine? Each new episode

will encore the following Sunday at 8 p.m.

our member dollars are being well spent on quality programming for the year

ahead. We’ve purchased several new titles that will enhance our local schedule,

above and beyond what our national dues to PBS provide. We use your member

funds to purchase programs from independent producers, as well as national and

international distributers.

Here’s a look at just some of what you can look forward to seeing in the coming year. While

we don’t have specific air dates for some of these titles yet, we’ll be sure to feature them right

here in Vegas PBS Source magazine, so keep an eye out for them in 2019.

It has been a very long wait for Doc Martin fans, but your patience will soon be rewarded!

We’ve purchased all eight of the brand-new episodes of Doc Martin Season 8, and they will

debut on Thursdays at 9 p.m. beginning January 17.

We’ve also purchased two new seasons of a Saturday

night favorite, Midsomer Murders. We are pleased to

announce that Idris Elba will return to the Saturday

night lineup as Luther at 10 p.m. beginning January

5, and we are keeping an eye out for a new season of

Death in Paradise.

We are also investing in new drama mystery series including Vera, inspired by best-selling

novelist Ann Cleeves, and Shakespeare & Hathaway — Private Investigators, featuring a hard-

boiled private inspector and his rookie sidekick who form the unlikeliest of partnerships as they

investigate the inhabitants of rural Warwickshire and their secrets.

Royal history will come to life in new documentaries. Queen Victoria and Her 9 Children is

billed as a “right royal saga,” and The Queen Mother is a moving profile that reveals the dra-

matic inside story of the Queen Mother’s tumultuous life, from royal power struggles to the

darkness of World War II.We are also investing in Secrets of the Masons, which tells the story

of the rapid global growth of the Scottish Freemasonry and its centrality to the Enlightenment

of the 18th and 19th centuries.

In addition, there are a few big series coming to us from PBS, including Victoria Season 3

on Masterpiece, which kicks off at 8 p.m. on Sunday, January 13, featuring 8 new episodes.

And a new 2-part series hosted by Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr.; Reconstruction: America After

the Civil War is slated to debut on Tuesdays, April 9 and 16. Also slated for an April release is

a new 6-part adaptation of Les Misérables on Masterpiece. And in Summer 2019, NOVA and

American Experience are slated to have content around the 50th anniversary of the landing on

the moon.

We hope you’ll enjoy all the new titles that we’re bringing to you in 2019.Thank you for your

generous donations that make it possible for us to purchase these programs for you, and for

everyone in our community, to enjoy.

Swamp: American Experience Tuesday, January 15 at 9 p.m.Learn the dramatic story of

humanity’s attempts to conquer

the Florida Everglades, one of nature’s most mysterious and unique ecosys-

tems. Home to a profusion of plants and animals found nowhere else on the

continent, Florida’s Everglades was an immense watershed covering the

southern half of the Florida peninsula.Told through the lives of a handful of

colorful and resolute characters, from hucksters to politicians to unlikely

activists, this special explores the repeated efforts to transform what was

seen as a vast and useless wasteland into an agricultural and urban paradise,

ultimately leading to a passionate campaign to preserve America’s greatest

wetland.

Victoria and Albert: The WeddingSundays, January 13 and 20 at 10 p.m.Enjoy a recreation of the wedding that changed British matrimonial cer-

emonies forever. This new two-part series, hosted by Lucy Worsley, cele-

brates an enduring love that was to melt the nation's heart and set the

standard for generations of brides to come. Part 1 joins the experts

preparing to reconstruct the wedding that changed history. They

investigate the stories behind the dress, food and music. Then in Part 2,

witness the most accurate reconstruction of Victoria and Albert's wed-

ding ever staged. It is followed by a sumptuous wedding breakfast, a

prelude to the first night that began a marriage so iconic it heralded

constitutional monarchy as

we know it today.

Independent Lens: Rumble – The Indians Who Rocked the WorldMonday, January 21 at 10 p.m. This special is an electrifying look at the Native American influence in popular

music, despite attempts to ban, censor and erase Indian culture. Early pioneers

of the blues such as Charlie Patton had Native as well as African-American

roots, and one of the first and most influential jazz singers, Mildred Bailey, had

a voice trained on Native American songs. As the folk-rock era took hold in the

‘60s and ‘70s, Native Americans such as Peter La Farge and Buffy Sainte-Marie

helped to define its evolution, and Native guitarists and drummers like Link

Wray, Jimi Hendrix, Jesse Ed Davis and Randy Castillo forever changed the tra-

jectory of rock and roll. Innovative re-creations, archival concert footage and

interviews bring the music and musicians to life.

Doc Martin Season 8Thursday, January 24 at 9 p.m.This popular British drama returns for an all-new

eighth season, beginning on January 17. Dr. Martin

Ellingham is back in Portwenn with his wife,

Louisa, and their son, James Henry. However, the

usual Portwenn antics and happenings quickly take

their toll on the grumpy Doc Martin. As he tries to

reconcile with Louisa’s sudden career change and

raise James Henry through his teething stage, his blood phobia causes a dis-

aster with a patient, resulting in Doc Martin’s suspension from practicing

medicine. Can he deal with these changes, or will he risk the fragile accord

he’s built with his family? In this week’s episode, Martin and Louisa need to

find day care for James, Ruth considers selling her farm and Al's stress level

takes a toll on his body.

Nature: Naledi: One Little ElephantWednesday, January 30 at 8 p.mBorn inside a sanctuary in the wilderness of

Botswana, Naledi the baby elephant loses her mother and faces the world

alone. Dedicated caretakers rally to adopt the baby elephant, save her life

and reintroduce her to the herd that had forgotten her. Although elephant

families are close, the program shows how precarious it is for a newborn to

survive once it has lost its mother. The team must separate Naledi from the

herd, work to establish a bond and finally entice her to take milk from a bot-

tle. Later, the film documents the cautious reintroduction of Naledi to her sis-

ters and the rest of the family, hoping that she will be accepted by the herd.

Independent Lens: The KingMonday, January 28 at 9 p.m.Forty years after the death of Elvis Presley, filmmaker Eugene Jarecki takes The

King’s 1963 Rolls-Royce on a musical road trip across America. From Memphis to

metaphor for the country he left behind.A diverse cast of Americans join the jour-

ney including Alec Baldwin, Rosanne Cash, Chuck D, Emmylou Harris, Ethan

Hawke, Van Jones, Mike Myers and Dan Rather, among many others. This special

Eye on the Sixties: The Iconic Photography of Rowland SchermanSunday, January 27 at 10:30 p.m. Famed “LIFE” magazine photojournalist Rowland Scherman captured some of the most trans-formational political, cultural and musical events of the 1960s — from the March onWashington to the first American Beatles concert to Robert F. Kennedy's ill-fated presidentialcampaign to Woodstock. At the sites of some of his most famous photos, Scherman revealscandid and insightful anecdotes from his storied career, reflects on his life and his legacy, andmuses about his medium's relevance in the digital age, and the passage of time. Scherman alsoshares seldom-seen images of politicians and celebrities of the 1960s, including PresidentLyndon Johnson, folk sensations Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins, tennis great Arthur Ashe, TVjournalism pioneer Barbara Walters, a young Bob Dylan, and JFK with the very first PeaceCorps volunteers of 1961.

Nature: Equus: The Story of the HorseFridays, January 18 and 25 at 8 p.m.

We built the world around us with horsepower. But what is it that makes humans

and horses so perfect for each other? And how have we transformed the wild

horse we tamed 6,000 years ago into over 400 specialized breeds today? To

answer these questions, anthropologist-turned-filmmaker Niobe Thompson takes

viewers on an epic journey across eleven countries and back in time to the

mysterious beginnings. In this new two-part special of cutting-edge science

and gripping adventure, Thompson explores the evolution of horsepower and

learns fascinating new insights into the body and mind of this unique animal.

He embarks on a global adventure of discovery, living and riding with horse

nomads in Arabia, Siberia and Mongolia, travelling into the field with archeolo-

gists and horse psychologists, and above all, getting friendly with horses every-

where he goes.
