the Hospice House staff frequently checking in, and delicious meals served at her door. For Maria, the Hospice House meant the comfort of knowing her mom was well-cared-for (and so was she).

Maria could visit her mom any time, day or night. “I work second shift and I wanted to see my mom after work. The nurses told me, ‘no matter what time of night or day, we will open the doors for you.’” Maria says, “Everyone was so nice. They took care of mom and me. Maria and her mom were very close and moved to Holland about 10 years ago. They were making a fresh start and knew no one. Maria worked at an area manufacturer and the two did their best to live each day to the fullest. When Ayuya suddenly became ill, a series of hospital tests showed lung cancer. She was told she had two weeks to live.

Maria says, “I was in shock. I didn’t know anything about hospice. The hospital walked me through it, then, a nice lady from Hospice of Holland came to my Mom’s room and told me all about it. Every one was so nice.”

Maria cared for her mother at home for a time, with help from Hospice of Holland nurses and aides. But as Ayuya declined, caring for her was too difficult. “I wanted to keep her at home. But she was really, really, sick.” At the suggestion of Ayuya’s nurse, they moved Ayuya to the Hospice House.

Adding More Life2

Dear Friends:

Last January, Hospice of Holland made news with the opening of our new out-patient palliative care clinic and our enhanced non-hospice palliative care program. Non-Hospice palliative care brings comfort to those who are suffering from an advanced illness, but who are

not yet ready for hospice care.

Our board certified physicians, Roger Phillips, MD, and Tod Wyn, MD, with our nurse and social work team, treat complex pain, reduce symptoms like pain, nausea, shortness of breath, and educate patients with advanced illness and their families. While these

expanded palliative care services meet an important need in our community, they are not fully funded by Medicare or private insurance. Our generous donors make them possible.

To learn more about Non-Hospice Palliative Care, please visit www.hollandhospice.org and see our new video, “Easing the Pain,” or call us at 616/396-2972.

Again and again, your support is what makes the highest quality end-of-life and palliative care possible in West Michigan. Thank you. We can’t do it without you.

Torrey Husmann, MHAExecutive Director

In August, Hospice of Holland’s Hoover office became “summer camp”. Professional grief counselors helped 12 young campers express their feelings, practice coping skills, and build a healthy healing process.

Grants from the Holland Junior Welfare League’s Justin D. White fund provided materials for grief and loss counseling and postcards to spread the word about Camp Hope.

The annual VanderLeek Cup Hospice Regatta has quickly become a popular summer event in West Michigan. More than 650 people participated, including 14 sailing crews, 25 dinghy crews, 500 dinner guests, countless volunteers and a great band!

Hosted by Yacht Basin Marina, with Bayshore Yacht Club and Macatawa Bay Yacht Club, the August 17 event raised more than $117,000 for hospice patients! All regatta proceeds help qualified patients pay expenses not covered by Medicare/Medicaid and private insurance.

For a complete list of sponsors, donors, photos, and sailing & poker run results, see www.vanderleekcup.com.
