Here are some helpful hints: Fun features at tree farms • Hay rides, wagon rides or sleigh rides. • Santa visits; many places have them on the weekends. • Refreshments often include marsh- mallows and hot chocolate. • Petting zoos and farm animals. • Extra greens; most farms also sell wreaths, garland and boughs. • Miscellaneous; tree stands and dis- posal bags are often sold on the farms. • Christmas-themed gift shops sell- ing ornaments, stockings and crafts are standard at many farms! What to bring • Pack for a day trip: is could include snacks, hand towels or disposable wipes and plenty of liquids to drink. • Dress in old clothes and hiking boots or old athletic shoes; you want to be comfortable and not worried about staining or tearing your clothes. • Bring layered clothing, and some extra socks and a blanket. Dress for the weather. • Pack snacks. You’ll be gone for a while and all that being outdoors will work up a big appetite! Bring a cooler and back it with your favorite snacks; hot chocolate or warm apple cider are great. Many farms supply free cider, coffee and hot chocolate; some have lunches and snack for sale. • Don’t forget the camera. You may want to capture those memories you’re making. Read more at www.pickyourownchrist - mastree.org. Tree decorating tips • How many lights do I need? Typically, count on 100 lights per verti- cal foot of tree. For example: for a 7-foot tree, you will need at least of 700 lights. For a more “twinkly” look, try 150 lights per foot (or 1,050 lights for a 7-foot tree). • Placing the lights. It is easiest to start at the Top of the tree, putting the receptacle end of the line there in place for your tree topper. As you go down the tree, try running some lights inside the tree to give the tree depth! • Where to place ornaments. Put the ornaments both at the ends of the branches and inside the tree to reflect the lights and give it more depth. To secure your ornaments on the tree, be sure to squeeze the wire hanger closed after you’ve placed the ornament on the tree. To learn more, visit www.pickyo- urownchristmastree.org.
