From city life, to park-life, to your life. Escape to the new Kew and find your new balance. Left: Studley Park Boathouse

The New Kew:

Introducing a revitalised suburb: a familiar place invigorated with fresh, creative energy.

Find balance among Melbourne’s fast paced city life with a calm and tranquil escape.

A New Day

As the sun emerges through Yarra Bend Park, people are already riding along the river, enjoying the first birdsong of the day. After browsing the news online at brunch, you catch up with friends who live locally over a specialty chai tea.

By midday you’re on a quick tram ride to the CBD, headed towards the inner city to shop, explore, and check out the latest lunch spot in a cafe nestled within your favourite laneway.

Choosing to hop of the tram a couple of stops early, you wander down the tree-lined streets, passing stately heritage-listed abodes revealing hidden treasures: a tiny coffee nook for dog walkers, an unusual modern art museum, an organic bakery.

By night, Kew picks up the pace with an eclectic nightlife: the latest Melbourne bar meets sophisticated institutions. It’s the best of both worlds. You’ve found your balance in Kew.

A New Way

Being an established suburb with a contemporary twist, Kew challenges perceptions.

A modern residential address that delivers the best that Melbourne has to offer. The ever- changing pace of the CBD bordering the tranquil, green-fringed parks and soaring mansions of an older suburb.

Kew draws inspiration from its surrounds while retaining its essence. Now interwoven with emerging creative talent including curious boutiques, pressed juice bars, fine dining, gorgeous parklands, and abundant public transport.

Superb food, coffee, and fashion are now essential, and a sense of community is fostered around shared interests. The best corner café where you can linger for hours. A cute boutique full of local and international designers. A leading Australian chef experimenting with bold flavours.

Every open space in Kew stimulates a sense of openness and freedom. With lush parks crossed with meandering pathways, golf courses and historic buildings, relaxation and wellbeing is outside everyone’s front door.

Visit The Woodsfolk: 39 Church Street, Hawthorn +61 3 9853 7581 thewoodsfolk.com.au Left: Find a unique collection of gifts and homewares

Right: Amber Clohesy, founder of ‘The Woodsfolk’

Meet a Local:

Neighbouring Kew and Hawthorn, The Woodsfolk is a corner store featuring beautifully curated homewares and hand-crafted furnishings, from animal-themed lamps to colourful rugs, one-off artworks, and imaginative stationery. All to make you smile.

Amber Clohesy Founder — The Woodsfolk

Q/ What inspired you to start The Woodsfolk?

I come from a family of bower birds, and I grew up in a beautiful home. So a love of homewares is in my blood.

Q/ Why did you set up shop in the area?

It is a great location that sits just beyond the city’s hustle and bustle with plenty of cool spots to explore. Our little group of stores and cafés on Church street are eclectic. We get visitors from around the corner and people making a dedicated trip to our store on their holiday.

Q/ Where do you source your beautiful stock from?

Some are so local they are made in Kew! We also source products in many other ways – from attending trade shows to stumbling upon a designer’s blog to finding their wares in far-flung places in Asia and Europe.

Q/ What sort of customers do you have?

We love our locals, they drop in all the time, and we know their kids and dogs. We have a local couple who bring their French bulldog Gilbert into the store. I snapped a picture of him and popped it up on social media. A Melbourne artist saw the photo and now Gilbert adorns For Me By Dee’s card and print range. Yes they are available in The Woodsfolk!

Q/ When you are not in the shop, what are you usually doing around Kew?

I just love to wander the neighbourhood. The streets are beautiful, the people are friendly and the local parks are little patches of tranquility. Looking over the fences of the grand old houses is something you can’t do in many suburbs this close to the city.

Q/ What does your typical day look like?

I usually start the day at one of the many local cafés having a coffee with one or more of our staff. After collecting the kids from school we usually do grocery shopping at Toscano’s and Leos Supermarket, and pick up our salmon at Tassal. We lead an extremely local kind of life and we love it!

Arts & Culture:

Home to one of the largest collections of contemporary art in Australia, the Lyon Housemuseum is an unexpected cultural gem, nestled in the leafy suburb of Kew.

Corbett Lyon: Founder — Lyon Housemuseum

Q/ Why was the Lyon Housemuseum established? Who lives there?

Over the last 25 years we have put together one of Australia’s largest collections of Australian contemporary art and we were very keen to make it available for public viewing and to have it accessible to researchers and students. We were also looking to build a new house for our growing family. So we came up with the idea of combining these two objectives and designed a building which would not only function as a family home but would also allow us to display works from the collection and open the house for small group public visits.

Q/ What inspired the architecture? How does it sit within the surrounding architecture and history of the suburb?

As an architect I had visited many museums around the world including many of the large public museums that we all know well. But it was a less visible, parallel history of smaller private museums that prompted my initial thinking for the Housemuseum. One particular museum, which I visited as a graduate student back in 1980, was the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice. I think that people enjoy visiting private museums – the collections are a little more idiosyncratic and you’re able to learn something of the personal history of the collectors and the specific artworks they collect.

Q/ What are some memorable reactions you’ve had to the space and the collection?

We’ve had thousands of visitors to the Housemuseum from all over the world. Some have come to see the architecture, many visit to see the art, others for public events and forums and others come for the kind of experience I came away with from the Peggy Guggenheim Museum all those years ago. Many arrive not knowing what to expect but leave feeling that they have seen something special, describing it as a surreal experience, something surprising in their home city of Melbourne, or in our suburb of Kew.

Q/ How does it work so well in Kew? Is Kew well–situated for this kind of arts venture?

It is close to the city and readily accessible from the city on the 109 tram – convenient for our international visitors. The City of Boroondara has a strong and ongoing commitment to the arts as evidenced in its recent re-developments in the city’s arts precinct.

Q/ Tell us about some of your favourite works on display.

Every work in the collection has been selected so in a sense they are all special. At any one time we have about a third of the collection on display in the Housemuseum. We are currently showing work by Christopher Langton which includes anime characters made as three dimensional sculptures and a colourful blow up sculpture in the front garden which can be seen as you pass by the museum on the tram.

Q/ Is there anything like the Housemuseum in the world?

As far as we know, the Housemuseum is the only building of its kind in the world. As an architect I think of it as a new species of building – a new hybridised type where we have brought together residential spaces and publicly accessible museum spaces into a single new building. The museum and residential spaces sometimes sit happily together and in other parts of the building are strikingly juxtaposed. Overall, a much more interesting experience for the visitor!

Balanced Lifestyle:

A lifestyle requires more than balance in work and play to feel fulfilling. Feel as good on the inside, as you will on the outside by taking advantage of Kew’s local exercise studios and unique health stores.

Stretch Yourself — KX Pilates

Well known pilates studio, KX Pilates, follows hot on the tails of London and LA based studios, boasting revolutionary ways to experience a typical pilates class. Faced pace, high intensity workouts ensure you leave the class feeling strong and energised.

KX, short for Kaizen Experience which, translated from Japanese means ‘change for the better’ encapsulates the philosophy of the company, which focuses on small and ongoing improvement. Supported by a team of supportive and experienced trainers, every session feels like a more tailored exercise experience, with small class numbers and attentive staff.

A Whole Experience — Mastic Wholefoods

George Calombaris, the famed chef behind institutions such as Gazi, The Press Club, Jimmy Grants and Kew’s very own Hellenic Republic is about to grow his presence in Kew with the opening of wholefoods store, Mastic. Inspired by Calombaris’ own personal health and wellbeing journey, which saw him losing an excess of 20kg, he turned the original plan for the Mastic site (a greek bakery; Sweet Hellenic) on it’s head by instead choosing to offer wholefoods based food and beverage options including açai bowls, green juices and raw food treats. Mastic is opening in Cotham Road in late 2014.

Beautiful Inside & Out: The welcoming façade of INQU promises an addition to the Cotham Road landscape that will be as iconic as it is familiar.

Every apartment features expansive terrace gardens that extend the boundaries of your living space, creating a blurred line between indoor and outdoor entertaining spaces.

Reflecting Kew

Maintaining a sense of outdoor space and connection with the characteristic parklands of Kew was an important consideration when designing spaces that reflected this indoor / outdoor flow.

Whether it’s the beginning of your day, enjoying the morning light filtering through custom fitted balcony screens or the close of your day, sitting around your outdoor entertaining area with friends, your space INQU offers elegant spaces for your every requirement. From the vine covered façade of the building, clad with sandstone tiles that mirror the architectural accents of historic homes in the suburb to the subtle layering of materials within each apartment, the sense of balance from the outside to the inside of each apartment creates graceful and functional living areas.

The Interplay of Opposites

Outdoor or indoor. A residential space that echos the highlights of living in such a well established, culturally rich suburb. Green spaces and parkland air, juxtaposed against a subtle layering of materials within living spaces. Soft light drifting through textured blinds falls across thoughtfully designed living spaces.

Stepping outside of your apartment, just a short stroll down the road finds you in the midst of Kew’s vibrant community of cafes and cultural spaces. Exercise your body and mind at a local pilates and yoga studio, or head down to the Studley Park Boathouse and enjoy a picnic lunch with friends amongst an environment that is unlike any other in Melbourne.

The efficiencies of the INQU design have been carefully considered against the lifestyle of the prospective occupant in mind, with the choice to forgo communal areas in an effort to keep body corporate costs low. Indoor spaces are created to resonate a personal sanctuary, that become personal spaces of rejuvenation. With such a variety of local culinary, retail and cultural options,it’s no surprise that time spent outside residential spaces is spent mingling amongst Kew’s vibrant suburban offerings.
