Founded in 1999, Wine-Searcher’s search engine and database brings together product names and price lists from stores, brokers, auction houses, wholesalers and producers around the world. The database of products changes daily as new online price lists are uploaded and old ones removed.

How does it work?Simply type in the name of your wine and click search. Or scan the bottle label. Or use one of the clever recommendation features. Search results pages will give you a list of the stores selling the wine, with the lowest price shown first.

WHAT WE DOWine-Searcher is a global online search engine and price comparison website for wines, beers and spirits.

From a results page a consumer can, with a single click, make their way to the merchant's website to buy the wine.

Wine-Searcher is free to use for consumers. An optional upgrade to a PRO account gives unlimited results, the latest critics scores, and additional features for collectors and enthusiasts.

Wine-Searcher is also free to businesses looking to upload a price list. Unusually, Wine-Searcher does not take a commission on sales. Instead stores are charged a simple cost-per-click rate whether they sell a $30 bottle or a $30,000 one.

Wine-Searcher also has a comprehensive encyclopedia detailing the world’s producers, regions and grapes, a daily news service, and critic scores and user ratings.

Everyday we pick-up complete price lists from stores;and there are tens of thousands of them – that’s “Big Data”!

The data from consumer searches, combined with the pricing and availability data from stores is brought together into reporting that helps with forecasting, tracking prices and spotting trends. Wine-Searcher develops market intelligence into custom reports that provide an insightful resource for retailers, distributors and producers.

Overnight – Europe and US time – we pick up complete price lists from stores; and there are tens of thousands of them – that’s “Big Data”! Each price list, whether it is for 20 wines or 20,000 different wine and spirit bottles goes through multiple quality checks using Wine-Searcher’s software.

We do this to ensure that prices are current, correct and the items are accurately described so comparisons can be made between prices across the world.

Not every price list stands up to these strict quality checks. On average, Wine-Searcher removes 10 merchants’ price lists that fail these standards every day. Merchants who meet and exceed quality checks and receive favorable customer reviews are rewarded with a 5-star rating that wine buyers can trust.

Following software development and systems management roles, I worked in commodities, banking and retail in London until 1995, when I founded web development and hosting business Limitless Internet Solutions. Limitless has always had a strong connection to the wine trade building web-based systems ranging from supermarkets like Sainsburys up to broking and trading fine wines with Berry Bros. & Rudd.
