Matters Fall 2018

TFCU’s Community Champion Award honors students in grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 in both Suffolk and Nassau Counties. The award will recognize young Long Islanders who engage in the community through leadership, volunteer service, character and a sense of caring and responsibility for others.

Credit Unions’ social purpose is People Helping People. TFCU wants to recognize those with this same people first philosophy.

Teachers: To nominate a student for this award, please submit a 300 - 400 word essay stating the following information: 1) Student’s name, grade and school 2) What was the service that was provided and what was the nominee’s particular contribution?3) Who was the recipient of the service? 4) When, where and for how long was the service conducted?5) Why is the nominee’s service extraordinary? What makes it stand out?6) Include your name, title and contact information7) All submissions are due by the 30th of the month

TFCU’s Community Champion Award will be given out on a monthly basis throughout the school year. The recipient will receive a $25.00 gift card to Barnes and Noble and a donation in the amount of $50.00 will be donated to a local charity of the recipient’s choice. The award will be presented to the winner at an evening reception at the Lake Grove Barnes & Noble store. E-mail your nominations to Cristina Herrera at cristinah@teachersfcu.org.

TFCU has experienced staff members who would enjoy the opportunity to come into your district to educate students on the subject of Financial Literacy. We have programs tailored toward every grade level. As part of TFCU’s financial awareness program, we offer presentations on the following topics:

Financial Presentations

Attention grades K, 1 and 2 teachers! TFCU can provide The Berenstain Bears Financial Literacy Program to elementary school students. Brother and Sister Bear and their classmates go on a tour of the credit union branch – taking them to the teller line, vault, drive through window, coin counter, and more. The lesson also focuses on the concept of Save, Share, Spend andEarn. About WMHOThe Ward Melville Heritage Organization (WMHO), founded in 1939, is a not-for-profit corporation that protects and preserves historic and environmentally sensitive properties deeded to it by Ward Melville. By enhancing and interpreting its properties, the organization creates educational and cultural experiences that integrate history, art, theatre, music, science and technology. The organization owns three (3) historic properties that are listed on the state and national register for historic places, and 88 acres of wetlands preserve. The properties are open to the general public for onsite programs and distance learning programs. Over 70 multidisciplinary educational programs and performances are offered year-round for children, adults and senior citizens.
