Vision Perspective

/ / // WaterfrontThe waterfront was very important to the health and success of this new development. The two main north and south roads terminate into this water front park with boardwalks and lots of public space. We felt as though this would be one of the draws that would attract people from other communities and from downtown Coeur d’Alene. We sought to create a physical connection from the backs of the buildings to the waterfront, this allows shoppers or residents to enjoy the riverfront as it was intended.

* The riverside dock was designed by Mark Irving, the plan view of it was colored by Mark and I (Jacob). The Perspective was mass modeled in Rhino by me and then drawn and rendered by Mark.

Vision Perspective

/ / // Public Rec. FacilitiesCoeur d’Alene, Id is known for its active community. People are always outside riding bikes, running, hiking, etc. Coeur d’Alene is also well known for triathlons and cross fit training. For this new development to be successful and attract people from downtown Coeur d’Alene we felt as though there needed to be something different and something everyone regardless of age or wealth could use. The crossfit park is located on the 17-acres of wood waste that is un-buildable and has many other amenities. Urban training equipment allows anyone to get a good work out by running around the track to each station for a different exercise.

* The concept of the crossfit park was thought of by Antone, the park was designed by me Jacob, the linework, drawings and color rendering was done by me, Jacob

/ Dense & Unique CoreTarget Area #3

/ / // Unique CoreThe city center is very important to the success of a city. We felt like Coeur d’Alene as a city, revolved around cars, one of our goals however was to have pedestrian oriented streets. So naturally the core needed to be unique, the most dense part of the development and friendly to the pedestrian in hopes that many would linger and interact with one another better. This central plaza space is flexible and could be used for concerts, farmers markets etc. The streets leading away from the center are axial and all pointing to the center of action. This will allow pedestrians to see the center from nearly anywhere on the site.

* The unique core was designed by the team. Jada did a mass model in sketch-up which I drew over and hand rendered.

/ / // Mixed use buildingsAfter spending months on research and the Master planning we then had 2 weeks to design a building prototype in order to get a sense of architecture scale rather than just a planning scale. We toyed with ideas of what might inhabit these lots that we had created and what they might look like from down on street level.

We chose to design one of the mixed use buildings near the waterfront and on the main plaza.

* The building was designed as a team and we all modeled it in Revit. The two drawings shown we both drawn and hand rendered by me, Jacob.

/ Arch 353 | Moscow, ID | 3-4 Week Long projectArboretum Pavilion

The University of Idaho arboretum is often missed by people zooming by in their cars. They miss the beauty of nature and the tranquility that the arboretum can bring to a busy student.

The design addresses these issues by bringing presence to the road with planters and trees pushed up to the road which lets the passerby know that there is something special there. The design celebrates the arboretum by creating defined spaces that encourage lingering and socializing. It also celebrates the view with the outreaching corner of the pavilion pointing and suggesting attention to the amazing south view.

Similar to St. Moritz, Switzerland, Sun Valley has a climate of great snow and lots of sun. People from all around the country and the world came and continue to come to Sun Valley to escape the often dark dreary winters and lift their spirits. The sun was so healing that during the WWII the resort was turned into a convalescent center for the US Navy. It was this idea of how the sun can effect our mental, physical and spiritual health, that was the driving concept behind this design. The design responds to this with all the main living spaces on the Southwest side where they can receive the most sunlight possible. All the units spill out into the courtyard which is open and un-shaded by buildings. The un-shaded courtyard allows people to get out of their house, even in the cold months and still feel comfortable.

All living spaces face SouthWest to harvest as much sunlight as possible

- Maximize the amount of sun exposure for healthy living. (All living spaces to the Southwest)

- The courtyard space to have full sun, no buildings shadowing it.

- Buildings oriented to the South West to harvest sun light and to allow great view of Bald Mountain.

- Create a sense of community with courtyard as center stage and communal space/laundry room.

- Create affordable housing that fits into the community and culture of Sun Valley

/ Arch 385 Architectural History | 1/16” Dome model; BasswoodSt. Peters Cathedral

In pre-modern architectural history we studied some of the great historical works of architecture including the Italian Renaissance which I specifically loved.

Some students chose to write a research paper exploring the differences in periods or architects. I chose however to investigate a great marvel of architecture known as the dome. I studied in depth, St. Peter’s Cathedral and created a 1/16 inch scale model of the dome using basswood. I used Rhino, Auto Cad, the laser cutter and hand modeling skills.

oise station 5b

The Fire Station project is a regional competition put on by the ICMA ( Idaho Concrete Masonry Association) along with the company, Basalite. The goal of the competition is to use CMU and become familiar with different designs and strategies based on the material being used. I received an honorable mention.

Page 25: Final Under Grad Portfolio

Can cmu and metal be more than just a mundane industrial building?

as double wythe walls

It was interesting to me, while being informed about CMU by sales reps, that they were constantly trying to make CMU seem as though it was something else. They would present it as performing better than brick, while trying to make it look like brick etc. It seems to me that so many architects and designers try to make CMU look like something that it is not, as though they are scared to use masonry block and have it look like they just used masonry block. So my main goal behind this project was to let the plain gray CMU be just that, a plain gray structural wall. The other intriguing thing I learned was that many Fire Stations in the West seemed to be a weird mix of Industrial and Residential. I set out to design something that used CMU as it was intended and to create a building that would express its inner functions.
