PUNE CITY

Talegaon Dabhade is a Municipal Council in the Maval taluka of Pune district in the state of Maharashtra

Talegaon is a small town in the heart of Sahyadri ranges. It is almost 330 ft. higher than Lonavala from the sea level and hence is believed to be one the places in Maharashtra with a very good weather. It is situated in the Deccan Plateau region Indrayani & Pavana are major Rivers flowing by Talegaon. Talegaon has an elevation of 602 m (1978 feet) The Hill Stations like Lonavala and Khandala are near Talegaon in Maval where tourists are mostly attracted in the rainy season.

It is extremely well connected to two major cities in India - Pune and Mumbai

Pune city is the divisional headquarter of Western Maharashtra and headquarter of the district. Administratively, Pune District is divided into 14 Taluka, 13 Panchayat Samitis (Blocks), 2 Municipal Corporations, 11 Municipal Councils, 3 Cantonment Boards and 1,844 villages.

Population characteristics: In 1991- 31232 and in 2001- 42, 578 Males -53% Females -47% 11% of the population - under 6 years of age No. of households -14186 Average literacy rate -79% ( higher than the national average of 59.5%) Male literacy -83% Female literacy -75% Chakan - Population: 21680, Class - III Floating population: Most of the working force from the industrial twin city of Pimpri-Chinchwad stays here for the ease of commuting and better ambience away from the chaotic lifestyle

3 The district shows three distinct physiographical patterns described as below: The Hilly Area on the West The district has 15 to 30 km strip of Sahyadri Mountains towards West known as Ghatmatha . The peak of the Sahyadri Mountain is at Bhimashankar, Tal. Khed (1,420m above MSL). The famous tourist places Lonavala and Khandala are located in this physiographic area. Altitude of this area ranges between 500 and 1500 m above MSL. The Hilly and Undulating Area Towards East of Ghatmatha, 15-30 km belt is known as Maval which is hilly and undulating. A strip on the West of Taluka Junnar, Ambegaon, Khed, Bhor and Western & Central part of Taluka Maval, Mulshi and Velhe comes under this region. The altitude of this region ranges in between 100 and 500 m above MSL. The Eastern Plateau On the East of Maval, remaining belt of plain is called Desh. This area covers basins of the river Bhima and its tributaries. Central and Western part of the Taluka Junnar & Khed, half Eastern part of the Taluka Ambegaon, Eastern zone of Taluka Velhe, Mulshi, Bhor and Western part of the Taluka Haveli falls in this area. The area of Shirur, Daund, Baramati and Indapur Taluka is mostly plain .

All the rivers in Pune District originate in the Western part of Sahyadri Hill ranges in Junnar, Ambegaon, Khed, Maval, Mulshi, Velhe and Bhor Taluka and flows through the Eastern part of the district. The district is divided into two major river basins, Bhima and Nira. North-East, Eastern and Central part of the district comes under the Bhima river basin and the South-East and the Southern part of the district under the Nira river basin. River Bhima is the main river flowing through the district. River Bhima has its origin at `Bhimashankar located in the Khed taluka and it flows through the central part of the district towards the South-East. Indrayani river is a tributary of Bhima. Bhima basin has large coverage and covers 51 Nos. of watersheds.

The flow rate available in a river helps in determining the dilution factor available for effluents and in self-purification. Depending upon the flow, the drains are divided into three flow categories i.e. high, medium and low relative to each other. This is done to differentiate the different drains according to their dilution capacity, which is based on their flow characteristics within the district. High flow stands for perennial flow, medium flow stands for seasonal with good flow and low flow stands for seasonal with insignificant flow. Normally, perennial flow in a river is due to the discharges from all the watersheds. Some upstream watersheds may be contributing to such flows and other may be contributing to seasonal flows. Hence, although a river may be having a good flow, the effluents cannot be discharged in the entire watershed, as dilution factor is not available in all the drains in that watershed.

y y

The three zones are; High flow areas: This includes the rivers/drainages with high flow and a buffer of 5 km to these drainages (River Indrayani, Mula, Mutha, Nira, Bhima and Ghod.) Medium flow areas: This includes the rivers/drainages with medium flow and a buffer of 5 km to these drainages (Rivers Karha, Bhama etc.) and Low flow areas: This includes the seasonal streams and remaining watersheds. Area wise distribution of these zones has been given below:

*Talegaon is in the basin of Indrayani river

Talegaon falls in high priority (for watershed prioritization)

TALEGAON IS ONE OF THE SURFACE WATER INTAKE POINTS IN MAVAL TALUKA

The depth of ground water table plays an important role in determining the risk due to contamination. Depending on the groundwater occurrence the district is divided into three zones high , medium and low . High ground water potential areas are those having ground water table less than 5 m below ground level, Medium areas are those having water table in the range of 5 to 15 m below ground level and Low ground water potential areas are those having water table more than 15 m below ground level.

The soil cover in the Maval taluka of Pune district is classified in four main classes:y y y

Kali (rich black soil) Morand (black to dark brown soil) Kharadi (poor and shallow dark black soil mixed with sand) Bardi (hilly land strewn with boulders)

y

Highlighted soils are found in Maval taluka

About 27% of the land in the district is under cultivation. The remaining area is either covered with forest, left fallow or classified as culturable waste. Land Capabilityy

Land capability classification depicts the capability of the soil for producing crops on sustained basis. The soil that is not useful for crops can be used for grasses and forestry or for recreation or urban / industrial development. The soil resource interpretation (Land Evaluation) is based on the land capability classification and precedes landuse planning. Land evaluation is made taking in account the following parameters for different land capability classes: i. Surface form ii. Parent Material iii. Particle size classes iv. Soil Erosion v. Soil Depth vi. Surface Texture vii. Soil Drainage viii. Slope, and ix. Surface stoniness, Salinity and Alkalinity

Hilly portion of Western side of the district is covered by the forestland and includes Taluka Junnar, Ambegaon, Khed, Maval, Mulshi, Bhor and Velhe. Small patches of forestland are also found in Taluka Purandhar and Haveli. The Taluka Shirur and Daund are having negligible forest cover, wheras Taluka Baramati and Indapur has no forest cover. Major portion of Taluka Mulshi, Velhe and Bhor is covered by forestland. The total reserved forest in the Pune district is 1598 sq.km (i.e. 10.21%) and major area falls in Taluka , Khed, Maval, Ambegaon and Junnar. Most of the area in Maval is covered with forest - Sag, Teak, Oak, Mango, being the mostly found trees. Rabbit, Deer, Wolf, Fox, Tiger and Leopards are the wild animals found in the forest of this area. Peacock, Bulbul, Parrot are some of the birds which you can see here.

Livestock population in Pune district is divided into poultry (45%) and milking animals (49%) such as Buffalo, Goat, Sheep and Cow ( Fig.8). Higher population of Poultry is seen in Taluka Haveli, Maval, Indapur and Baramati which cater to the demand of urban area. Similarly, a large population of milking animals is because of availability of fodder, suitable climate and accessible potential market.

Talegaon Dabhade has a very pleasant and moderate climate because of its proximity to the Sahyadri mountain range. Despite Pune experiencing hot summers, the temperatures in Talegaon maintains a very temperate level because of its geographic location

Based on the evaluation of the wind rose data for the period from 1981 to 1994. for morning and evening time, it can be said that the overall wind direction for the district is from the West and South West, with absolutely no wind from the South and an infinitesimal percentage of wind from the North direction. The predominant winds from the West and South West direction are responsible for the monsoons as they carry moisture-laden clouds from the Arabian Sea. Wind frequency is more during the monsoon season, with frequency percentage of 73% with not much of diurnal variation.

Talegaon-Dabhade is 135 kms from Mumbai and 32 kms from Pune. Located on the old Pune Mumbai highway (NH4) with an easy access to the new expressway. The new Mumbai Pune Expressway spans a distance of 93 km connecting Mumbai, the administrative capital of Maharashtra and the financial capital of India, with Pune , an industrial and educational hub. 3 railway stations in the vicinity ensure great connectivity to this area. State highway no 55 passes through Talegaon town and there are schools, colleges, hospitals and houses surrounding the road. The over bridge at Phugewadi is the entry point for vehicles going to Nigdi, Dehu road, Talegaon and Lonavla. A 5 km. long road connecting the Mumbai Pune Express Highway will soon be constructed to reach the floriculture park.

Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has decided to install the accident alert machinery on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway in view of a large number of mishaps on the busy route. The hi-tech electronic machinery will immediately alert the control room, police stations and ambulance personnel in the event of any mishap and Talegaon is one such alert receiving points.

TALEGAON - A NEW INDUSTRIAL TOWNSHIP : Maharashtra pioneered the establishment or institutions of democratic decentralizations and local self-governance several decades ago. More recently, these concepts were extended through statutory amendments to enable the establishment of independent Industrial Townships. In the first phase, self-governing Industrial Townships with the power to raise resources and determine their application will be established in industrial areas being developed by MIDC at twelve locations across the State. Talegaon (Pune)is one of them. The industrial townships so set up will pay 25% of their revenue to the concerned Gram Panchayat(s) or local bodies for the initial period of 5 years. Just 18km ahead of Talegaon is Chakan which is an important industrial belt in the state. Chakan is home to a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) promoted by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).

The picturesque hills of the Western Ghats locally known as the Sahyadris in Maharashtra, offer many sites, suitable for gliding. The western Ghats offer almost a year round destinations than those sites in the Himalayas which are restricted by extreme weather conditions. Here flying is possible almost every day of the long season from October to June. Ancient cave temples at Bedsa located just before Kamshet. One of the widely known sites is the 'Tower Hill' just off the highway on the road to Pavna dam. The mountain ridge is excellent for cross country flying with beautiful views of lakes and open fields.Distance (in km) 200 180 160 140 120 100 80 60 40 30 20 0 14 34 36 40 45 57 87 75 90 92 95 97 98 107 102 104 Distance (in km) 147 135 130 123 126 127 136 137 184
