DEAR ASSOCIATION MEMBERS & DELEGATES
Welcome to the ALSGBI Annual Scientific Meeting. We are delighted to be inSouthport for what promises to be an excellent Meeting and are very gratefulto our local organiser, Milind Shrotri and his Liverpool team for producingan excellent programme. The ALSGBI Laparoscopic Surgery Training Daywas held on Wednesday 25 November at Broadgreen Hospital, Liverpool.I am grateful for the support of ETHICON and Karl Storz and our expert facultyin providing high class practical training.
This is the 21st anniversary of the ALSGBI and the Association continues asa leader in laparoscopic surgery. The first day of the Meeting is devoted tolive laparoscopic surgery where we remain the only National Association toprovide this unique insight into surgical skills and techniques. We encourage your active interactionwith the surgeons who bravely put themselves in the firing line. The logistics for organisation of liveoperating are huge and we thank Karl Storz and Olympus for all their technical support.
Friday will feature a symposium on the use of mesh in abdominal surgery a subject which is currentlyarousing much controversy. Speakers will present on the use and misuse of mesh in the upperabdomen, pelvis and abdominal wall. A medico-legal viewpoint will be provided by Dr Karen Ellisonfrom the Medical Protection Society. We are delighted and honoured to welcome Professor StevenDeMeester from the University of Southern California as the BJS visiting lecturer who will talk onrecurrent para-oesophageal hernia. There are also the prize sessions for the best paper, DVD andposter presentation.
I am sure the Meeting has something for everyone. Please take your time to visit the exhibition standswhere the latest innovations from our Industry Partners are on display. Prizes are available forthose who visit every stand and enter the draw.

WELCOME FROM THE LOCAL ORGANISER
DEAR ASSOCIATION MEMBERS & DELEGATES
Welcome to the North-West with Liverpool and Southport hosting the 2015ALSGBI Annual Scientific Conference. Liverpool, the birthplace of the Beatles, gained the status of UNESCOs second World Heritage City in England afterLondon in 2004. Designated as the European Capital of Culture for the year2008, Liverpool has a smart, gleaming city centre with a huge shoppingcomplex and an astounding range of pubs, bars and clubs making for anexciting night life for all age groups.
Liverpool has the reputation for the largest collection of museums in the UKand a large number of galleries, some of the famous ones being the Museumof Liverpool (the UKs first museum dedicated to the history of a city) andthe International Slavery Museum, Merseyside Maritime Museum, Tate Liverpool, World Museum,Walker Art Gallery and The Bluecoat (a Grade I three hundred year old art centre!). Crosby, whereI live, has Another Place, a collection of one hundred awe-inspiring cast-iron life-size sculpturesby Angel of the North artist Antony Gormley staring out to sea.
Like the two major football clubs (Liverpool FC and Everton FC) with their intense rivalry, Liverpoolalso has two major acute care hospitals Aintree University Hospital and Royal Liverpool andBroadgreen University Hospitals. The hospitals however sensibly appear to be on the way of mergingin the near future to avoid duplication of tertiary services for the region and centralising cancercare, which is spread or split across the Merseyside area. Aintree University Hospital will be thevenue for live operating for the ALSGBI Conference, while the Broadgreen Hospital site will be thevenue for the ALSGBI Laparoscopic Surgery Training Day.
The main conference will be hosted by Southport at the Southport Theatre & Convention Centre (STCC)with its impressive Floral Hall. Situated just 20 miles north of Liverpool, 30 miles from Manchesterand with excellent transport links, Southport is a popular place for days out, short breaks and s
