In order to ensure that SAICA continues to satisfy all trainees and training officer needs, the survey continued in However to allow for changing experiences among this group of SAICA professionals, the need to restructure both the questionnaires was apparent. Given the restructuring in 2012 of questionnaires, all trackability of previous research has been lost, thus no tracking data is available. SAICA appointed Ipsos to conduct this study among trainees and training officers whilst at the same time incorporating the expertise of the their technology partner JHnet, who hosted the online survey. Technical aspects to remember when reading this report SAICA has asked a number of 10 point scale questions The slides that follow are interpreted as follows: Top box scores on the 10 point scale are based on respondents selecting ratings of 8-10 (Top 3 box). Bottom box scores are based on respondents selecting ratings of 0-4 (Bottom 5 box). When looking at the SAICA satisfaction (Ipsos satisfaction modeling) questions these slides are interpreted as follows: Top box scores on the 5 point scale are based on respondents selecting ratings of 4-5 (Top 2 box). Bottom box scores are based on respondents selecting ratings of 1-2 (Bottom 2 box). 010 Agreement Top 3 Bottom 5 1 Very negative Very positive 7 Agreement Bottom 2 1 Very negativeVery positive Top 2 Important information when reading this report 8 Significance testing (2-tailed t-test) has been carried out to establish whether at a *95% confidence level, differences occur among the different types of trainees, these differences could be significantly higher or lower than the total sample or each other. Significantly higher and lower points are shown as follows: Where significant differences do occur, reference has been made to this. TIPP = Training inside of Public Practice TOPP= Training outside of Public Practice 2 respondents from the England office are not categorised as TIPP or TOPP * A confidence level of 95% gives us a probability for a Type 1 error of 100% - 5% = 5%. It is the most commonly used level. A confidence level of 90% gives us a probability for Type 1 of 10%, but a smaller probability for a Type 2 error. A confidence level of 99% gives us a probability for Type 1 of 1%, but a larger probability for a Type 2 error. There is no rule that specifies which one should be taken, 95% is just the usual, default confidence level applied. Respondents are given positive, negative and neutral rating opportunities. If a large number of respondents should opt for the middle rating, i.e. 3 on a 5 point rating scale and around 5-6 on a 10 point rating scale, it would indicate apathy or limited knowledge of the organisation or topic at hand. In general SAICA is doing fairly well on most aspects of the training programme with particularly high top 3 box scores on trainees having access to training officers and knowledge of competencies. Of concern are the low top 3 box scores on the assessment process functioning effectively and the training office taking adequate steps to address development areas identified through the assessment process. Just under 60% of trainees agree that they would recommend their training office. 77% of trainees are positive about their career choice and if they were to choose again, just on 70% would want to become a CA(SA) again, with most wanting to do this due to enjoying what they do and the good job opportunities. The SAICA training programme Most trainees believe those who fail to complete the training programme is due to the fact that it is hard to balance work and studies, lack of commitment and some financial issues. Those who complete the programme successfully is due to their good support system, determination and motivation. Completion of the programme Key take outs (2) 84 When choosing a training office, location, salary, client base and reputation are amongst the top 3 aspects considered among trainees, with most finding out about their training office via recruitment days and advertisements. Word of mouth also plays a role in trainees hearing about various training offices. When asked about the best aspects of their training office, trainees mentioned client base, exposure to different industries and provision of training. Negative aspects range from low salaries to unreasonable deadlines amongst others. When asked which mediums of learning trainees prefer and find most effective, e-learning scores 41% and DVDs 34%. Training office 57% of trainees agree that the assessment process assists them to monitor their progress towards achieving prescribed competencies, whilst over 60% believe they understand the assessment process. The administrative burden associated with the assessment process is that it is quite time consuming and needs to be quicker given other work deadlines and pressures. Trainee assessment Just under 80% of trainees would recommend SAICAs training programme. SAICA fares extremely well on familiarity, appropriateness, overall satisfaction and trust in SAICA with over 80% of all trainees agreeing with these statements this is good news for SAICA.
