As we move into a new year, can you apprise us aboutthe key achievements of the Construction & ContractsDivision in the year that went by?

The year gone by has been full of historic events. VariousDivisions have been carved out of Era Infra Engineering.Construction & Contracts, being the largest Division planned itsbusiness & created new horizons of growth for Era Group.

As the parent Division, Construction & Contracts faced greaterchallenges i.e sustainability of success rate, undaunted growth& to remain the first choice in construction companies. It was themoral responsibility of the C&C Division to support newlycreated divisions with regard to all resources.

On the very outset C&C Division chalked out its robust businessplan which was shared with the team members of the division tohelp us achieve our targets. Various strategies were formed andthe individual goals were aligned with the business goals. Itcreated tremendous team spirit amongst the team members.

The key achievements of C&C Division have been bagging theprestigious projects of national importance. In last one year,we have been awarded with 29 new projects with totalvalue around Rs 2400 crores. The great opportunity ofcontributing towards nation building came on our way. Thethree prestigious projects of common wealth games i.e IndiraGandhi Stadium, JLN Stadium and Karni Singh Shooting Rangemade us proud. Apart from these, the major projects like NTPCJhajjar, NTPC Dadri are progressing well as per ourcommitment.

We have also entered into aviation sector wherein we were ableto complete the departure terminal of Pune airport well in time. With this success we have got repeat orders to work again forRaipur & Indore airports.

What according to you contributed to the accomplishmentof the abovementioned milestones?

Undoubtedly the team spirit of C&C Division & highly motivatedhuman capital contributed to the success rate. The continuousguidance of our Honorable CMD kept our spirits soaring high. The confidence of the management on the team membersencouraged the team to perform efficiently even in tough times.

Could you throw light on some of the miraculousachievements of the Division since inception? Why arethese achievements so special to the Division and Group? In what way do they set Era apart from peers?

Since inception the geometric growth of the Division has madethe company one of the “Fastest Growing Company” of the

year. We have grown in size & numbers and marked a pan Indiapresence all over.

These achievements are special to this Division in Era Groupbecause, we have entered in different and new sectors and haveperformed exceedingly well thereby getting repeat orders. TheDivision has been engaged in diversified construction activitieswhich include: power projects, industrial projects, housing, institutional & commercial complexes, highway projects, aviation projects, railway projects and infrastructure projects.

Apart from the above, we have achieved the followingmilestones during execution of the projects:

• Completion of TG Deck in Dadri in 17 days after the placement of VIS

• Mill bunker erection in Dadri with improved system for the 1st time before hydro test of boiler

• Completion of piling before schedule time in Dadri

• Fabrication of steel structure 3000 metric ton in single month in the mega project of NTPC Jhajjar

• Erection of steel structure 2500 metric ton in single month in NTPC Dadri & Jhajjar

• The repeat orders given by NTPC and by BHEL speak volumes about the confidence our clients have in our expertise. Recently we bagged 2X750 MW gas based power project at Bawana. And we were able to mobilize the project in a week’s time.

In what areas has the Division significantly strengtheneditself in the last one year? How have these strengthscontributed to the Division’s growth and evolution?

The Division has significantly strengthened itself in past one yearand is confident of its success as the company has built strongpillars of success like:

• Project & Responsibility Management System through ERP

The systems are in place as a result there has not been anycomplaint whatsoever from the clients. We are creating such asystem that there is zero complaint from the clients.

Can you share some of the key challenges faced by yourDivision in 2007-08 calendar years and what were thesteps/ measures taken to resolved the same?

In the past one year the Division faced numerous challenges, there have been:-

• High inflation rate leading to soaring prices of materials affecting the profit margin

• Increasing competition leading to shrinking margins

• Demand supply gap for manpower & materials

• Strict regulations related to environment and workers to be implemented in near future

• Change in Government policies.

• Lack of belongingness

• High attrition rate. (Short work association)

• Environmental /weather constraints.

Era Infra Engineering has a de-risked business model toovercome these challenges and firmly believes… “If we arenot busy in meeting the competition, we are creating it”,

• Has consciously reduced its exposure to any single sector any single client or region or state in the country with in the infrastructure & construction segment

• Long standing brand image

• De-risked business model

• Varied and synergistic business activities

• Diversified construction activities in key sectors

• Expanding into large value railway, power, and irrigation projects

• Moving up the value chain through forward integration

2009 promises to be a trying time for the global economyas well as for India. What are the Division’s strategic plansand outlook going ahead?

We are going through tough times however we believe that“Tough times never last, tough people do”. The impact ofthe present slow down has also influenced us but we believethat we have the necessary experience and expertise to fight it

out and emerge as victorious as ever. With the support of entireteam we have been able to handle this situation. The privatesector has witnessed slowdown but our main strength has beenour business with the Public & Government sectors which has,in fact, been further strengthened during these tough timeswhich is quite evident with the influx of repeat orders from publicsector companies. The low prices of material in the market andavailability of quality and trained manpower during these timeshave helped us to maintain our position. The strategic planschalked out by us are:

• Implementation of performance management system to create value for high performance

• Minimizing recruiting of human resource by optimizing theexisting manpower

• Robust implementation of standard of procedures which are

designed as per the industry trends

• By increasing 3 P’s i.e productivity, performance anprofitability

• By utilizing the ‘M’ factor properly

• To explore new areas of cost savings/ reduction

• Fund management.

• Retention of competent human resource.

• Training & Retraining to tap the talent

Where do you see the Division three years from now andhow does it plan to achieve the targets set?

Over the next three years we will move to new horizons ofgrowth. We have already entered in the field of erection &commissioning of super boiler (500 MW) at NTPC Kahalgaonthrough BHEL. We plan to get into hydropower and nuclearpower projects, canals & construction of ports & marineventures. The Division would definitely like to go forinternational projects also.

Last year has been full of challenges. The C&C team hasunitedly met every challenge and turned it into a success. Wehave many feathers to our cap and we know nothing succeedslike success. In the coming year, too, we are determined toreach new horizons.

As we make our way into 2009, I am sure, we will write a newsuccess story. For this we seek cooperation from the Directors,Business Heads and colleagues from other Divisions. Withblessings and guidance from our Honorable CMD, we welcomethe New Year and wish every team member and our valuedclients a very successful year ahead.

INDIA AS CONSUMER MARKET

As the Indian economy surges, the consumer market of the country is evolving radically. According to a McKinsey report, India's middleclass is likely to swell by more than ten times – from its current size of 50 mn, to 583 mn people. By 2025, over 23 mn Indians – morethan the present population of Australia today, will be counted as billionaires. The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) forecasts, Indianhousehold spend is going to reach nearly USD 325 bn by 2015 compared to USD 150 bn as of now.

This metamorphosis can be attributed to several factors like growing urbanization, increasing buying power among the middle classresulting in shifts in demographic dynamics. Further, buoyant economic growth and higher disposable income have instilled renewedconfidence in the Indian population.

Brand consciousnessNielsen Global Luxury Brands study (Oct ’08) reveals that India has the third highest brand conscious population in the world – withonly Greece and Hong Kong ahead of it. 35% of Indian consumers, who participated in the survey, showed inclination towards buyingbranded products, while it was 46% in Greece and 38% in Hong Kong. It is the improved buying power, triggered by the economicreforms in the beginning of the nineties, which has augmented the Indian consumers’ desire for branded goods and services. This hasengineered a noticeable change in the luxury landscape in India. Growing at an annual average rate of 26%, India has been identifiedas a significant driver in the global luxury market.

Dynamic rural-urban divideA marked, yet intangible, divide exists between rural and urban India which is reflected in the consumer psyche as well as marketdynamics. While marketing strategies of most companies are aimed at wooing the rather well-to-do urban Indian consumers, rural Indiapresents a market too big to overlook. Nearly 70% of the nation’s population lives in the rural areas, offering a huge demand base.

Traditionally, the rural consumer in India has remained less well-heeled than his urban counterpart. However, off late agriculturalreforms and an increase in productivity of agri-based products have, put higher disposable incomes in the hands of India’s ruralcommunity. This, in turn, is translating into higher per capita consumption and an aspiration for goods and services beyond the barenecessities. Growing consumer base in sectors like telecom and insurance are a testimony to this fact.

Media and communication channelsWhile dominant communication channels in India include print, TV and radio, 80% of the total advertising-spend, incurred bycompanies, covers traditional media like TV and print.

A recent survey by research and advisory firm JuxtConsult reveals that total mobile subscriptions have crossed 300 mn in September2008 and Internet connections have reached well above 52 mn. Internet and mobiles are rapidly emerging as the preferredcommunication channel for many Indian companies.

Though, word-of-mouth still remains the most important influence in the buying decision of the Indian consumer, a fact confirmed by85% users who participated in the recent global Nielsen Internet survey.

Newspaper at 77% is the second most trustworthy advertising medium; TV ranks fifth in terms of trustworthiness at 65%. For the internetusers, online opinions are at the third position with a 73% vote. Interestingly, radio is also gaining ground in urban India, spreadingfrom its traditional stronghold in the rural community.

Star-power and recall valueAs opposed to celebrity-fatigue in some developed societies, celeb-endorsement in India ensures high recall. A Celebrity EndorsementSurvey conducted by IMRB (India Market Research Bureau) and public relations firm IPAN, states that 86% Indians rememberadvertisements owing to the celebrities that endorse them. A study by AdEx India, a Division of TAM Media Research suggests Bollywood, with an 81% share of the audio-visual media endorsement pie, far outshines other domains in terms of star-power. Cricket comes nextwith a 14% share. However, star endorsement alone is less likely to influence the buying decision. However, the same survey indicatesthat 78% Indian consumers consider quality as the most important factor while buying a product.

Value consciousnessIndia’s consumer market demands that the global marketer remains attuned to price sensitivity. Against the backdrop of rising brandconsciousness, value consciousness too remains an important factor in influencing the buyer. Yet, this does not necessarily mean it isa market for cheap products per se. It rather underlines how Indian consumers are willing to pay more if they are convinced about thevalue of a product. This has driven most organizations to strategically highlight the value-for-money aspect for their products. Stayingcompetitive also calls for a presence across market segments. The Finnish telecom brand Nokia has been enormously successful as abrand with its comprehensive product portfolio covering a wide spectrum of segments.

Packaging and design Unlike in the pre-reform period when Indians purchased unpackaged commodities, the importance of product packaging is on the risein India. Both packaging and design are increasingly being seen as potent marketing tools for product differentiation and communicationwith the consumer. Growth in the retail sector has further revealed packaging as an effective brand communicator at the time ofpurchase. Convenient packaging assures consumers about the product quality and helps boost sales.

Defining tomorrow’s market leadersAnalysts expect fierce competition in the Indian consumer market as all companies view India, as a key market. The imminent changesin the Indian market will create major opportunities and challenges for both Indian and multinational companies. Business companiesthat can meet the needs of India's aspiring middle class, adapt to price points to which reflect the realities of Indian incomes, build brandloyalty in new consumers, and adjust to its fast changing dynamics will find significant rewards in India's rapidly growing consumermarket.

Cinema, for us as an audience means spending time with family and friends. It signifies movies, masti & magic. And, I was no different. However this perception changed after joining Era E-Zone (India) Ltd.

After experiencing the work pressure of entertainment industry at Era E-Zone a lot of things have been addedto the meaning of cinema for me. As an audience, planning for a movie is as

simple as booking the ticket, going to theater, buying popcorn, acquiringseats & waiting for the 3 hour magic to begin. But, we never think, thatto make that magic happen on-screen a dedicated staff works round theclock to provide us this exciting cinematic experience.

As an audience, what we visually see are rays of light coming out of thesmall window behind us & feel the thrilling sound entering in our ears. This cinematic experiencewhich make us laugh, cry, scream is the result of various perfectly executed activities, that to in ashort span of time. The slightest mistake or a delay can cause the audience turn violent.

After being a part of this dynamic industry, the activities that cross my mind now when I go for amovie are as follows:

• The impatient audience that waits outside the theatre while the housekeeping staff is cleaning theseats, carpets & clearing empty wrappers that too in the short span of time so that we can sit in aneat & clean environment.

• The staff handling the uncontrolled patrons coming out of the theater during the interval so thatwe can enjoy the popcorn & Pepsi with our near & dear ones.

• The man behind the small window (projectionist) makes sure that the picture & sound is inperfect sync so that we can be glued onto our seats.

And the list doesn’t end here. There are lot other activities which are involved in screening a movieperfectly. However as an audience all we notice is, the crowd at the ticket window, the delay at thesnacks counter to name a few. We are least concerned about the problems faced by the cinemastaff that provides us the best possible services. No matter what hurdle they need to overcome theironly aim is to begin the show on time. The show must go on………..

All I can request is that as an audience we should try appreciating the cinema staff in our way.Even a small gesture in favour of their appreciation goes a long way in boosting their moraleand motivating them to work better.Wishing you all a very Happy New Year

One day, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the purpose ofshowing him how poor people live. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of a very poorfamily. On their return, the father asked his son, "How was the trip?" "It was great, Dad." "Did you see how poor people live?" the father asked. "Oh yeah," said the son. "So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip?" asked the father. The son answered: "I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us; they have friends to protect them”.The boy's father was speechless. Then his son added, "Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are”.Isn't perspective a wonderful thing? Makes you wonder what would happen when we are happy witheverything that we have, instead of worrying about what we don't have. Appreciate every single thing you have.

Can you recollect a day where you woke up at 5:00 am, got ready quickly and waited to do somethingexciting? Was it your college annual day function? Or a competitive exam Or maybe a first date? Maybe itwas your wedding day. Is it Monday morning to work? If the answer is the last, surely you are a happyemployee.

Though the above occasions may not have a lot in common, excitement and motivation can be attributedto almost all of them. However, at the workplace, it is almost impossible to find both or any one of theseattributes daily. But, being happy or unhappy is always in our hands. That's the choice we make and we arethe creators of the outcome by our actions.

Let's look at some of the reasons that may make an employee unhappy: unfair rewards and recognition, office politics, non co-operative team, unreasonable boss, insufficient compensation, constant threat to job security, lack of responsibilityin the current job, no clear career path, and lack of basic facilities at workplace.

The list goes on and on. Some of these things may not really propel an employee to quit, but it might lead to negative energy which leadsto low productivity. When an employee is under-productive he or she will be the first target when companies look for opportunities to givepink slips.

As mentioned earlier, being happy is always in your hands. A happy employee is more productive and gives more than an unhappyemployee. So, here’s a look at some ways to embrace the happiness factor.

1. Plan your week on Sunday nightLook at your work calendar and plan your week on Sunday night or Monday morning. This could include important meetings, deliverables, a brief summary of things that are pending from last week and tasks that need to be achieved during the week. This mightlook like a time management tip, but at the end of the week, on Friday night when you re-visit the week gone by, the satisfaction wouldbe immense.

2. Undertake activities that you are passionate about even if it’s not a part of your job profile• Start an initiative that you would love to do irrespective of whether it is required for you to do or not• Send a daily newsletter to your team on the topics that most of them will be interested• Prepare a presentation on the topic that you are passionate about• Organize small sports events for your team• Call everyone in your team for a team coffee, breakfast or lunch break• Appreciate colleagues in your team or in a cross-functional team who did a great job• Write a poem on your team's achievements• Arrange a potluck lunch

3. Do not indulge in the blame gameIf something goes wrong do not blame others blindly. If you commit a mistake, do not hesitate to accept it. Accepting your mistakegracefully will only make you look like a true professional but also give you the satisfaction of not cheating.

4. Communicate more often in personUtilize all the opportunities where you can speak to an individual in person rather than e-mail or phone. But be aware of the otherperson's time and availability. Listening to a positive answer from a person will give you more happiness than if it is done over the phoneor via e-mail.

5. Know what is happening at your workplaceWill this make a person happy? Truly, yes! Imagine a cricket team that doesn't know how many runs to score to win a match? Morethan losing the game, the player will never be interested or motivated to play well. Make it a point to attend all meetings that areaddressed by the CEO to your immediate manager to know what is happening around you. It could be the company's growthplan or your department's next big project. This will help you achive an extra edge when you answer queries raised by yourpeers or juniors.

6. Participate in organization-level activitiesThis could be as simple as spending a weekend for a corporate social responsibility activity or attending a recruitment drive to helpyour HR team or arranging a technical/sports event at the organizational level. Most of these events will be successful as people do come on their own to contribute.

7. Have a hobby that keeps you busy and happyMany people say their hobby is watching TV or listening to music or reading the newspaper. These aren't hobbies; they are just waysof passing the time. Some hobbies are evergreen and will keep you evergreen as well: dancing, painting, writing short stories, poems, blogs and sharing your experiences.

8. Take up a sport While choosing a sport make sure that there is physical activity. There is the danger of becoming addicted to sports where there is lessphysical activity (like computer games, chess, cards etc). Physical activity keeps a person healthy and happy. If you pick up one sportwell, you can represent your organization in corporate sports event too.

9. Keep yourself away from office politicsOffice politics - a taboo word for some people. It’s a pervasive thing at the workplace. In its simplest form, office politics is simply about the differences between people at work; differences in opinions, conflicts of interests are often manifested as office politics. It all goesdown to human communications and relationships. Playing politics might be beneficial but only for the short term. So the best thing todo is play fair.

10. Wish and smileMore often than not, there are fair chances that the other person will smile back. This could be your security guard at the gate, yourreceptionist, your office boy, your CEO or your manager -- never forget to wish them and smile.

11. Volunteer for some activity Do at least one activity without expecting anything in return. There is no set frequency for this. This could be once in a day or once ina week or thrice in a week. It could be as simple as making tea at the office for your colleague, helping a colleague who is working inanother department by using your skills, dropping your colleague at his door step in your car, going to your manager or colleague to ask if there is any help you can extend, contributing to technical or knowledge management communities in your organization etc.
