Celebrating World Oral Health Day: 20 March 2016

• On 20th March 2016, over a million dentists from 200 organisations based in 130 countries across the world will join together with FDI World Dental Federation (FDI) to celebrate World Oral Health Day, turning the global spotlight to the importance of maintaining good oral health.• Behind these celebrations is a serious message. Poor oral health has

been associated with a number of health conditions such as:• Heart disease• Pneumonia• Lung disease

Celebrating World Oral Health Day: 20 March 2016• “Oral diseases affect 3.9 billion people worldwide, with between 60%

and 90% of children globally suffering from tooth decay. Yet there is a

lack of understanding of the key role that oral health plays in our

overall health; simple steps such as brushing twice daily for two

minutes, needs to be integrated into all our oral care routines.

Oral HygieneOral hygiene is the practice of keeping the mouth and teeth clean to prevent dental problems, most commonly, • Dental cavities, • Gingivitis, • Periodontal (gum) diseases and bad breath. There are also oral pathologic conditions in which good oral hygiene is required for healing and regeneration of the oral tissues.*Hygiene refers to conditions and practices that help to maintain health and prevent the spread of diseases(WHO)

Dental plaque: biofilm• Dental plaque is a yellowish biofilm that builds up on

the teeth. Biofilms contain communities of disease-causing bacteria and their uncontrolled accumulation has been associated with cavities and gum disease (both gingivitis and periodontitis).

Dental cavities• Dental caries, also known as tooth decay,cavities, or caries, is a

breakdown of teeth due to activities of bacteria. The cavities may be a number of different colors from yellow to black. Symptoms may include pain and difficulty with eating.

Tooth brushing 

• Tooth brushing is the act of scrubbing teeth with a toothbrush equipped with toothpaste. Since only two thirds of the outer tooth can be reached by a toothbrush, interdental cleaning (with floss or an interdental brush) can usefully accompany tooth brushing.
