Exam 4 (i.e. the Final) Study Guide

When is the final?

Make sure you know when your final is.

What Material Does the Final Cover?

Merriman, John (1996). “England and the Dutch Republic in the Seventeenth Century” in A History of Modern Europe: From the Renaissance to the Present. New York, NY: W. W. Norton & Company. pp 233 – 273. i.e. pp 276 – 296 of our course packet

Lovett, John (2018) “Barbarians at the Gates” … i.e. the big reading I e-mailed to you

Yorke, Stan (2005). “Cloth for all” in The Industrial Revolution Explained. pp 66 - 80.Newbury, UK: Countryside Books. i.e. pp 265 – 2273 of our course packet

What’s the format of the Exam 4? You have three minutes to solve an extreme, 3 dimensional, Sudoku puzzle while rabid rats are

gnawing upon your body. Man, those rats be hangry!

Objective Section: 70 points, short answer, multiple choice, etc.

Essay: 30 points. Choose 1 of essays.

What are the “objective” questions like? One of those dreams in which you show up to your most important final at the wrong time … and have

forgotten your pants.

Look over your class notes, handouts, as well as the exam study questions posted on the course web

site. I use the objective section to test your breadth of understanding.

What are the essay questions like?

Bee stings on your eyeballs. Look over the list below. I will choose 3 questions from the list below.

You will need to answer 1 of the chosen 3.

1. Describe the major political developments in England from about 1603 to 1700. Your essay will likely be organized chronologically. Do, however, make sure you address the following points.

How good (or bad) of a government, for the purposes of future economic development, the English had at the various points in time between (about) 1603 and (about) 1700.

What made the government, at these various points in time, good or bad from a development perspective.

The motivation behind each of the changes you discuss.

2. Using the map on the next page. Discuss access to coal for various countries in Europe from about 1650 to the 1800’s. Also, briefly discuss why access to coal is important.

3. Using the maps on the next few pages, discuss the dynamics of state formation (i.e. what political units there are) first around the year 1,000 C.E., then around the year 1600 C.E. In particular:

Use the first map to describe the likely size, location, and evolution of political units around the year 1,000 CE.

Make sure you examine: the 1) Isle of Britain, 2) what is now France, and 3) the Low Countries.

Explain why the results (# and location of political units) is the way you state. i.e. Tell the reader why you get the results you do.

Use the second map to describe the likely size, location, and evolution of political units around the year 1,600 CE.

Make sure you examine: the 1) Isle of Britain, 2) what is now France, and 3) the Low Countries.

Explain why the results (# and location of political units) is the way you state. i.e. Tell the reader why you get the results you do.

What are the ramifications of this analysis for England and the Dutch Republic?

4. What were the two main political factions in the Dutch Republic around 1790? What did these two factions do regarding control of, or formation of a government during this decade?

What were the two main political factions in England around 1680? What did these two factions do regarding control of, or formation of a government during this decade?

Which outcome is better from the perspective of economic development? Explain.

What, according to the readings and lecture, was the reason for the two outcomes?
