Wishing you all a Happy New Year!

Every year, on the eve of New Year, we think for a resolution for ourselves, and a new-year gift for the rest.

This time, at BRAC Bank, we are beginning the New Year with this CSR Report – our gift to you all and our resolution to dedicate more to the people and planet.

The 3P philosophy “People, Planet and Profit” has become our core belief at BRAC Bank and part of the DNA of our business. We as a Bangladeshi Bank have taken initiatives not only for the people and society as a whole but also maintain the same values while carrying our day-to-day business.

As a SME-focused bank, we provide financial facilities to unbanked SME Entrepreneurs at grassroots level for their financial inclusion, a service that has been recognized as a part of CSR by Bangladesh Bank. We also give top priority in ensuring gender equality in office, a practice which has been adopted within our bank well before Bangladesh Bank puts it as a performance indicator of CSR programs. As part of our commitment to planet, we have launched a project to solarize all SME Unit Offices. We also have plan to bring our branches under solar energy gradually.

BRAC Bank is blessed with inspirations from our Founder Chairman Sir Fazle Hasan Abed on serving the humanity. Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Atiur Rahman has always been supportive to us in expanding our social initiatives for covering more people and more areas. Our Board of Directors always provide their valuable insights and guidance in carrying out our CSR programs.

Employees work here with a greater mission. All employees are motivated to contribute to bank’s planet and CSR initiatives. They are bringing out new ideas taking bank’s social portfolio to newer heights.

CSR Strategy

To expand and carryout social activities in a focused way, BRAC Bank this year has launched a CSR Desk with a dedicated team.

The desk is initiated in line with the guidance of Bangladesh Bank, will help the bank to put focus on different CSR activities and ensure transparency.

BRAC Bank Limited follows the 3Ps (People, Planet and Profit) philosophy in its operation. Besides core business, the bank carries a strong emphasis on Corporate Social Responsibility-initiatives that support the people and protect the planet.

Stories of theun-defeated souls

Al-Amin was only seven then. Suddenly he lost his father in a road accident. Loosing her dear husband Al-Amin’s mother lost her mental sanity. Father’s sudden death and mother’s inability forced little Al-amin to get into the battles against life. But the passion for study kept him going on studying, despite of this adverse situation of his life. With the help of his teachers and relatives he carried on studying his education aside of his works. This brilliant young chap passed his SSC examina-tion with GPA 5 in 2011.

Thousands of brilliant students, like Al-Amin, are getting ahead through their lives following their passion to study and these brilliant futures are introduced by BRAC BANK-PROTHOM ALO ADAMYA MEDHABI SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM. Starting from 2010, this scholarship program is in a search of these brilliant minds from every corner of the country who can achieve a bright future through their higher education.

Love is the best serumfor Autistic children

Autism is not a disease or disability. Repetition of activities, avoiding eye contact, no response while called in, tendency to be alone or avoiding interaction with others, serious opposition to changes are some of the symptoms of autism. There is misconception about autism in our society. According to medical science, autism is not a disease or any kind of mental disability. Awareness and love of parents, relatives, teachers and people around can help the children lead a normal life.

To develop an sustainable help for autistic children BRAC Bank is working with Society for Welfare of Autistic Children (SWAC). BRAC Bank is providing help to the schools, operated by SWAC and to develop a nationwide awareness about autism.

Supporting the Liberation War Mus eum ‘Muktijudhdha Jadughar’ (Liberation WarMuseum) is a national pride. It preserves history and heritage of our liberation war in 1971 that led to the birth of independent Bangladesh. Established in 1996, the museum is run by an independent Board of Trustees and now recognized nationally and internationally as an institution, protecting the heroics and history of the emergence of Bangladesh in world map.

The museum is now constructing its full-scale building at its 2.5 bigha premise at Agargaon. BRAC Bank has committed Tk. 1 crore for the construction.

BRAC Bank, as a Bangladeshi Bank, has been associated with promoting endeavors of national pride for long and this support to the Liberation War Museum is a part of it.

Solar Power will run the SME Unit Offices

PEOPLE, PLANET, PROFIT- this is the philosophy BRAC Bank believes in. And so BRAC Bank never stands or finance for any project that can harm the environment. To provide the Small and Medium Entrepre-neurships (SME) loan facilities BRAC Bank has its units allover the country. Already 22 SME units are equipped with the solar-power installments, gradually this will be installed in every unit all over the country.

According to the direction of BANGLADESH BANK, BRAC Bank has introduced “Renew-able Energy Desk” in its main office, which monitors the bank’s activities in this field. Under the custody of the BANGLADESH BANK’S refinancing scheme BRAC Bank is also financing for solar panel, ETP, light engineering etc.

Comilla Bio-gas ProjectA New Starting for “Green Banking”

Village- Aliar, Upazila- Nangalkot, Zila- Comilla; Mr. Shahidul Islam is one of its brightest sons, who took the initiatives to develop the project named “Palli Layer Firm” as the main entrepreneur, along with some of his friends. Efficient mainte-nance and professional behavior along with its usage of modern technologies has led this organization to a new height with a short term in poultry business.

After this tremendous success Mr. Shahidul Islam has taken a lot more eco-friendly projects in his hands. Using the disposable parts from chickens of his poultry he has taken a great initiative to start a bio-gas plant. Under the custody of the refinancing scheme of Bangladesh Bank, to help this eco-friendly project the largest SME bank of Bangladesh, BRAC Bank, has spread its hand towards this project. South Asia Enterprise Develop-ment Facility (SEDF), the technical advisor and aid provider to this project, along with BRAC Bank and other commercial organizations will work on more projects like this.

Seed Crushing Projects Adding sustainability to economy

BRAC Bank is a planet and people caring bank. It is reflected in its business operations also. It invests in projects that give our economy a strong footing and ensures sustainability.

Finance support to country’s two biggest seed crushing projects manifests bank’s strong commitment to sustainability. The two green projects belonging to City Group and Meghna Group will help develop backward integration in edible oil and feed industry in the country. It will also reduce import dependency and reduce pressure on foreign currency. The project will produce crude edible oil and also oil cakes to meet huge demand of raw materials of feed for poultry, fish and cattle farms. The project will be a step forward for develop-ing backward linkage for import-dependent edible oil and feed industry as well.

BRAC Bank is always committed to finance in projects like these that rduces foreign dependency of the economy.

BRAC Bank also seeks in broadening its category of National Board of Revenue (NBR) for state incentive to private sector for CSR initiatives.

It also considers whether the program aligns with BRAC Bank CSR Policy that focuses on environment, education, health, young leadership, culture and heritage and community development.
