You can smile now Mercy seniors. Your team IS PrepVolleyball.com’s 2014 National Champions! Pcitured front row, l-r: Devon Rachel and Sarah Bell. Back row, l-r: Nikki Koval, Lexie Hamrick, Merideth Jewell and Marissa Merilatt
PrepVolleyball.com presents the “Behemoth,” our final high school rankings of 2014. These rankings are sponsored by
Team Snap.
For the third straight year, the rankings are a little different, as we only number 1-250 nationally, compared to 1,000 or
more schools in past years. There are several reasons for this, including massive stress reduction on the author, but hopefully we more than make up for it by ranking the teams in all of the states (except Vermont, which hopes to obtain
full varsity status in 2015). Thanks to the many, many coaches and prep writers who helped me get deep in the state-by-state lists. Your dedication was invaluable and greatly appreciated!
As you survey the list, please keep a couple of things in mind:
1. There are 150 or more schools whose seasons are deserving of top 100 consideration; unfortunately, there is room for
only 100. When I rank the top 100 during the season, I inevitably reserve a spot or two (or more) for outstanding squads from emerging volleyball states. I know that the teams from powerful states ranked in the top 200 or so would most likely
win a showdown against the top 100 team from the emerging state. Please know that I’m not slighting the team from the
strong states; rather, I’m recognizing teams from the emerging ones.
2. The rankings from 101-250 are largely ceremonial, designed to recognize teams for their outstanding seasons rather
than meticulously determine their place in the national pecking order. Because it is not done with close to the rigor of the
top 100, it’s probable, likely in fact, that you’ll find teams that are “out of place,” meaning that they are listed ahead of teams that defeated them during the season.

Without further ado…
2014 Final Century Club National Rankings
1. Mercy Academy (Louisville, Kentucky) Final record: 40-1; Last week’s ranking: 1
Pre-season ranking: 6
Mercy Academy will reign as PrepVolleyball.com’s 2014 National Champions because no other team nationally has a resume to match the Jaguars. The Kentucky single-class champions won every tournament they played in this season,
defeated seven teams that won state titles either in 2013, 2014 or both, went 6-0 against teams in the top 25 and 11-1
versus teams in the top 40. Todd Garvey’s three First Team All-State players, Merideth Jewell, Devon Rachel and Lexie Hamrick, all are seniors, as is Second TeamerNikki Koval, so it will be interesting to see how Mercy
will fare in what could be a building season next year.
2. Redondo Union (Redondo Beach, California) Final record: 38-2; Last week’s ranking: 2
Pre-season ranking: 2
The Sea Hawks’ record-setting year finished with 27 straight wins and culminated Saturday with their first state title. Led by Bay League Players of the Year Yaasmeen Bedart-Ghani and Norene Iosia, Redondo swept Pitman for the
California Division I title, but it was not enough to pry the mythical national title from a Mercy team that finished up a
month ago. While Redondo’s resume certainly was impressive, the team could not overcome the fact that it lost in the Durango semifinals to Archbishop Mitty, which then lost in the finals to Assumption, from Kentucky, a team Mercy
defeated three times. Yes I know that Yaazie was not full strength due to injury, but there are times when you shouldn’t speculate and just say “scoreboard.” This is one of those times.
3. Mount Notre Dame (Cincinnati, Ohio)
Final record: 27-2; Last week’s ranking: 3 Pre-season ranking: 21
The Cougars repeated as Ohio Division I champions and avenged a regular-season loss to then-undefeatedToledo St.
Ursula in the semifinals. It’s tough to play a national schedule with Ohio’s restrictions, but Joe Burke’s team managed to play three Kentucky teams. MND defeated both No. 11 Notre Dame and No. 26Sacred Heart. The third team, Mercy,
won 26-24, 29-27, 25-23 and in so doing prevented the Cougars from themselves claiming the No. 1 spot in these rankings. Mount Notre Dame will graduate seven, including setter Jessica Towle and libero Margo Wolf, but returns its
top four kill leaders and can draw from a JV team that went 22-0.
4. Lewis-Palmer (Monument, Colorado) Final record: 29-0; Last week’s ranking: 4
Pre-season ranking: 11
The Rangers are a fantastic team – we ranked them No. 11 in the pre-season for a reason – and they did not disappoint.
Susan Odenbaugh’s team won all of their matches to repeat as Colorado 4A champions and dropped just five sets along the way. But while MaxPreps can recognize this squad, which has three First Team All-State performers in Alexa Smith,
Nicole Montgomery and Mariah Evans, as their national champions, we cannot. The reason is this: How can a team be a national champion if it does not play a national schedule? L-P was undoubtedly the best team in Colorado – the
Rangers defeated Colorado 5A champion Grandview and defeated Ponderosa, considered the No. 2 team in the state, in the 4A championship match. But a team that could have played a national schedule but did not cannot be rewarded
with a spot at the tippy top. The ONLY way for Lewis-Palmer to have claimed national supremacy this year was for
Pondo, which played Durango, to have gone to Sin City and won it all. But the Mustangs, the second-highest Colorado team in these rankings at No. 147, lost three times to strong California teamsLakewood, Villa Park and Francis
Parker in seven matches and could not give the Rangers the boost they needed.
5. Benet (Lisle, Illinois) Final record: 41-1; Last week’s ranking: 5
Pre-season ranking: 80
I’ll admit to surprise when I opened Chicago prep volleyball guru Phil Brozynski’s 2014 preview in mid-August and saw Benet ranked No. 3 in the state behind only Mother McAuley and Wheaton St. Francis. Because of that tout, I
ignored coach Brad Baker’s belief that his team was not worthy of a pre-season national ranking and installed the
Redwings at No. 80. Led by MB Rachael Fara, a great defense anchored by Natalie Canulli and Tiffany Clark and the emergence of sophomore Sara Nielsen at setter, Benet finished much better than the 80th team in the land, avenged its
only loss of the season to McAuley by winning a nail biter in the Supersectional round then romped to the Illinois 4A title. “We won our third state title in the last four years, but this might have been our most surprising championship,” said
Baker. “We will graduate 9 seniors and be very young next season. Winning it all next year will be as big as of challenge as this year was.”
6. St. Ursula (Toledo, Ohio)
Final record: 28-1; Last week’s ranking: 6
Pre-season ranking: 7
The Arrows graduate two four-year starters in MB Lauran Graves and defender Maurissa Leonard and two more impact seniors, RS Morgan Finn and defender Ryann Cox, but head coach John Buck will return a ton of talent, headed
by sophomore libero Jamye Cox and junior MB Elizabeth Coil. Standout junior setter Emily Lydey, sidelined virtually all year by injury, also will be back. This was supposed to be TSUA’s year, but if memory serves me correctly, the Arrows
won their first title in 2004, one year after being the team to beat.
7. Mother McAuley (Chicago, Illinois) Final record: 36-4; Last week’s ranking: 7
Pre-season ranking: 3
Jen DeJarld said that her 2014 Mighty Macs were “one of the strongest teams I’ve ever had.” But the Asics Challenge champs could not get by Benet in the Supersectionals to defend their 2013 4A title and now face rebuilding with the
graduation of nine seniors, six of whom were starters, including Sun-Times POY Ryann DeJarld. The Mighty Macs, who
always have exceptional sub-varsity programs, will build next year around setter Jane DeJarld and MB Kayla Caffey.
8. Desert Vista (Phoenix, Arizona) Final record: 41-3; Last week’s ranking: 8
Pre-season ranking: 18
Jenna Tunnell this week was named First Team All-America by USA Today and Gatorade Arizona POY. She and fellow
seniors Kirstyn Perry, Lexi Glover, Matisse Monty and Maggie Byrne-Quinn (like Tunnell, an All-Arizona selection) helped lead the Thunder to their first Division I state title. They will be missed but Molly West’s team isn’t going away
anytime soon, as a talented sextet of underclassmen, including 6-8 Florida recruit Rachael Kramer and USA Youth National Team libero Hailey Harward, all return with dreams of doubling.
9. Jesuit (Portland, Oregon)
Final record: 40-0; Last week’s ranking: 9 Pre-season ranking: 25
There are only two teams in our top 10 that finished the year undefeated. Those two teams plus St. Ursulaare the only
top 10 teams to play only in-state opponents. As good as Jesuit was this year – and the Crusaders were very good not
just “for Oregon” good – the team could not really challenge for a spot in the top five without at least venturing out of state, even if only to cross the Columbia River to play the best of Washington. The good news is that Jesuit, which
graduates senior setter Symone Tran, returns virtually everyone next year. The Crusaders would be foolish to merely duplicate this year’s schedule. How boring for its elite athletes, who need to see how they stack up beyond their borders.
There are no state association travel restrictions, so hopefully that will happen.
10. The Woodlands (Texas) Final record: 40-3; Last week’s ranking: 10
Pre-season ranking: 56
Seniors Courtney Quinn and Rachel Reed were named All-State by the TGCA. Those two, state tournament MVP Kendall Cook and MB Julia Pasch are among a group of seniors who helped the Highlanders go 121-6 over the
past three years, with state large-class titles capping the final two.
11. Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, California)
Final record: 37-3; Last week’s ranking: 13 Pre-season ranking: 5
Great balance propelled the Monarchs to a third straight California Division II title on Saturday. Bret Almazan-Cezar will
lose several key players to graduation, including WCAL POY Alexa Dreyer in the middle, libero Gabby Carta-Samuels, who was equally important; both efficient outsides and big-blocking middle Brittany Latigue. Mitty will return six key
players – both setters, both right sides, athletic middleCandice Denny and Kate Formico, who can play anywhere – and will be just fine in 2015 when it attempts to add to its state record for volleyball titles.
12. Notre Dame Academy (Park Hills, Kentucky)
Final record: 31-6; Last week’s ranking: 11 Pre-season ranking: Watch List
Junior setter Hannah Talkers set the school assists record in 2014. She and junior OH Morgan Hentzare among nine
varsity players who return next year as the Pandas seek to improve on this year’s finish at the state tournament, where
No. 1 Mercy defeated the Pandas for the third time this season in the state championship match.
13. Punahou (Honolulu, Hawaii) Final record: 24-3; Last week’s ranking: 12
Pre-season ranking: 24
Senior OH McKenna Granato was named today as Hawaii Gatorade POY, capping a season in which the University of Hawaii signee recorded 375 kills, 295 digs, 127 blocks and 96 aces for the Division I state champs.
14. Kamehameha (Honolulu, Hawaii)
Final record: 32-2; Last week’s ranking: 14 Pre-season ranking: 14
What if? What if Kamalani Akeo, a senior setter and First Team All ILH performer, had not been injured in the last non-
state tournament match, the Warriors’ third win in as many attempts to that point versusPunahou? Would her presence have been enough to secure a fourth win over the Buffanblu in the Division I state championship match? We will never
know. What we do know is that Kamehameha, whose only other loss came versus No. 2 Redondo Union, has some
rebuilding to do after graduating 10, including seven starters. Kayla Afoa and Brooke Kaawa will be the top players returning.
15. P.K. Yonge (Gainesville, Florida)
Final record: 30-2; Last week’s ranking: 15 Pre-season ranking: 33
The Florida 4A champs finished the season on a 19-match winning streak and will return nine of their top 10 players,
including 4A POY Jac’cara Walker and Gabby O’Connell, her partner in crime on the outside.
16. Brentwood (Tennessee) Final record: 60-1; Last week’s ranking: 16
Pre-season ranking: Watch List
In 2013, Katie Kemp spent most of her time watching Hunter Thompson set the Bruins to their ninth Tennessee state title. The job fell to the senior this fall and Kemp made the most of it, averaging almost 11 assists per set, including 57 in
the state final win over Farragut that earned her MVP honors. The setting job will fall to someone else next year. If she does the job half as well as Kemp, a third straight title is probable given all of the hitting talent that returns, including
frosh sensation Garrett Joiner.
17. Chaska (Minnesota)
Final record: 30-3; Last week’s ranking: 17 Pre-season ranking: 23
The Hawks, seven seniors strong, finished the 2014 campaign on a 16-match winning streak and captured the state AAA
title in their first appearance in the tournament since 2006.
18. Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville, Florida) Final record: 31-1; Last week’s ranking: 18
Pre-season ranking: 78
A loss to Oviedo at the Berkeley Premier, later avenged at Swing for the Cure in Orlando, is the only blemish on an otherwise perfect season for the Florida 5A champions. The Crusaders, who won state for the first time since 1999, will
be hard-pressed to repeat, however, as all of their top performers were seniors, including 5A POY Denvyr Tyler-Palmer.
19. Mater Dei (Santa Ana, California)
Final record: 30-12*; Last week’s ranking: 19 Pre-season ranking: 70
*Three losses by forfeit
In the pre-season, we wrote this about the Monarchs:
“The Monarchs enjoyed a great first season under new coach Dan O’Dell in 2013. Their ability to match or exceed that
success, however, is dependent on a player we cannot yet write about who may or may not play for the school. That player, a top 100 talent, would help overcome the graduation of five starters. Two senior starters return for Mater Dei:
athletic setter/RS Payton Chang and 6-4 middle Brittany Welsh(LSU). Senior transfer Jacqueline Wolfe, a 6-1
MB/RS, 6-0 sophomore OH Shannon Scully and 6-0 junior MB Makena Martin are three others expected to be big contributors to the Monarch cause. Right now, Mater Dei is at team on the margins of the top 100. But if the transfer
suits up, you can move that team up 50 places in the rankings.”
That player was Alyse Wallace-Ford and she was better than advertised. With her and Wolfe in the lineup together, there was no stopping Mater Dei by any team not named Redondo and even then just barely. We wrote that Mater Dei
would be 50 places better in the rankings with Wallace-Word. Make that 51!
20. St. Mary’s of Lancaster (Lancaster, New York) Final record: 47-0-1; Last week’s ranking: 20
Pre-season ranking: 90
Leah Meyer today was named New York Gatorade POY. The Lancers were good with or without the Duke signee, as evidenced by winning their last eight matches without their injured star. Underclassmen likeBailey Dolegowski, Caitlyn
Meyer and Summer Slade will lead the way next year.
21. St. Thomas Aquinas (Overland Park, Kansas)
Final record: 44-4; Last week’s ranking: 21 Pre-season ranking: 51
To the victors go the spoils. The Saints defeated St. James for the Kansas 5A title and today Carlyle Nusbaum was
named Kansas Gatorade POY over St. James’ Jenna Gray and Arianna Fitzmorris, teammates on the Asics MAVS team that won the 16 Open national championship two summers ago. Nusbaum, who suffered severe facial injuries in an auto
accident three weeks before Junior Nationals this summer, showed her fight by playing at Nationals despite being advised against it. She then followed up with a fantastic senior year in which she amassed 390 kills and 262 digs.
22. Sacred Heart Cathedral (San Francisco, California)
Final record: 37-3; Last week’s ranking: 22
Pre-season ranking: Watch List
Margi Beima and the Fightin’ Irish enjoyed a record-breaking and record-making season in 2014, including a school
record for wins, a first win over Archbishop Mitty in the WCAL championship (Thank You Jamba Juice!) and a first state
title in California’s Division III. Defense led the way for SHC, which recorded 2,428 digs on the season, including 728 by libero Alexis Dirige, a junior and USA Today All-America who will be one of six key players back for Coach Beima next
season.
23. Carmel (Indiana) Final record: 32-7; Last week’s ranking: 24
Pre-season ranking: Bubble
Under Armour All-America, Second Team All-America by USA Today and Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year after
amassing 584 kills and 465 digs this past season. Those honors would mean nothing, said seniorCarly Skjodt, had they not come with the Indiana 4A title, achieved last month after two years of losing in the championship match.
24. Venice (Florida)
Final record: 30-2; Last week’s ranking: 25 Pre-season ranking: 72
A mostly senior group, led by POY Gen Beaumier, propelled the Indians to the Florida 6A title last month. This trophy’s
a keeper! 6A Coach of the Year Brian Wheatley will have his work cut out for him in 2015, but he always finds a way.
25. Papillion-La Vista (Papillion, Nebraska) Final record: 42-1; Last week’s ranking: 23
Pre-season ranking: Watch List
Five wins over Omaha Marian, which won the Class A state championship over Papio, are enough to land the Monarchs in the final top 25. Seniors Jessica Peters and Priscilla O’Dowd are among five key seniors graduating for coach
Kristen Lebeda-Svehla, who will build around junior OH Katie Stephens next year.
26. Sacred Heart (Louisville, Kentucky)
Final record: 27-13; Last week’s ranking: 26 Pre-season ranking: 41
The Valkyries suffered 13 losses – to be expected when you play that kind of schedule – but twice
defeatedAssumption and was the only team to beat No. 1 Mercy. Despite graduation of standout hitter Julia Boswell and libero Sydney Shearn, this could be the team to beat in Kentucky next year.
27. Assumption (Louisville, Kentucky)
Final record: 32-6; Last week’s ranking: 27 Pre-season ranking: 9
Great defensively, the Rockets lacked the firepower to be consistently elite. There is young talent with the arms to do
damage next year and the defense will be strong again. Don’t count out Assumption.
28. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) Final record: 29-4; Last week’s ranking: 28
Pre-season ranking: 54
Seniors Nikki Lyons and Kara Mason will graduate this year, leaving the 2014 7A state champions without their top
two hitters. Three sophomore hitters and freshman setter Derry Costigan will help ensure that the fall won’t be too far, if at all.
29. St. Francis (Wheaton, Illinois)
Final record: 38-4; Last week’s ranking: 29 Pre-season ranking: 8
The Spartans won a third straight Illinois 3A title with a very young team, led by Illinois Gatorade POYMolly Haggerty.
Peg Kopec’s team will be prohibitive favorites again in 2015, whether they play in 3A again or their success pushes them to the state’s largest class.
30. Cathedral (Indianapolis, Indiana)
Final record: 32-5; Last week’s ranking: 30 Pre-season ranking: 1
The Irish were our pre-season No. 1 team and played like a top team, earning wins and occasionally suffering losses to
the best teams in the state and Louisville Assumption. Cathedral could not seal the deal by winning an Indiana 4A title
– Carmel got the best of Jean Kesterson’s team in the state championship match – but this is a young team with the defense, setting and firepower to challenge both in the state and nationally again next year.
31. Helias Catholic (Jefferson City, Missouri)
Final record: 43-0-1; Last week’s ranking: 31 Pre-season ranking: Bubble
Forty-three wins for the Crusaders is not only a new school record but a state record for wins in a season in any class.
When you consider that the JV went 30-0-1 and the freshmen were 30-1, Helias may be in prime position to repeat its Class 3 title despite the graduation of five seniors, including First Team All-State performers Erica Haslag and Lindsey
Griggs.
32. Flint Hill (Oakton, Virginia) Final record: 34-0; Last week’s ranking: 32
Pre-season ranking: 88
The Huskies’ perfect season – they dropped only six sets during the fall – increased their unbeaten streak to 47 straight matches over two years. Carrol Anderson’s team has a record of 95-4 over the past three, all of which culminated in
private school titles. Seven seniors graduate, including two-time Virginia POY Ally Ford. Junior OH Morgan
McKnight will lead Flint Hill next year on a quest for four in a row.
33. Charlotte Country Day (Charlotte, North Carolina) Final record: 44-1; Last week’s ranking: 33
Pre-season ranking: 66
Katharine Franz was today named North Carolina Gatorade POY. She is one of five seniors who helped author the best season in school history, a season that included wins over South Carolina AAAA championWando and Tennessee Division
II-AA champion Baylor.
34. Cardinal Gibbons (Raleigh, North Carolina) Final record: 27-0; Last week’s ranking: 34
Pre-season ranking: 83
The Crusaders won state again in 2014. That’s nothing new, as they have won six in a row and 16 times in the past 18 years. The good news is that with so many returning starters, Gibbons can make a run for the top 10 nationally next year
with the right schedule.
35. Mount Carmel (New Orleans, Louisiana)
Final record: 47-2; Last week’s ranking: 35 Pre-season ranking: 93
Katie Kampen, who had 572 kills and 380 digs during the fall for the state-champion Cubs, wrapped up an exemplary
career by winning the Louisiana Gatorade POY award for the second straight season. Kampen will play for LSU next year, leaving the program in the hands of junior Mighty Mite Kristen Nuss and Kampen’s sophomore sister, Kellie.
36. Divine Savior Holy Angels (Milwaukee, Wisconsin)
Final record: 46-3; Last week’s ranking: 36 Pre-season ranking: Bubble
The Wisconsin Division 1 champs graduate six but should contend again next year with setter Maddie Yossback along
with big hitters Annie Ertz, Katie Arnold and Katie Rolfe. Additionally, both the JV and freshmen teams were undefeated, which means reinforcements are coming.
37. Parkland (Allentown, Pennsylvania)
Final record: 45-0-1; Last week’s ranking: 37 Pre-season ranking: Watch List
Only two will graduate from the first team in school history to go undefeated. That means kill leader Siena
Salvaggio and ace record holder Kristin Krause, the team’s setter, will be among many returning for a Trojan team that has played in the large-class state finals in three of the past four years.
38. Providence (Clarksville, Indiana)
Final record: 32-3; Last week’s ranking: 38
Pre-season ranking: 44
Two All-State juniors, Audrey Shannon and Jacquie Hornung, will be back along with a talented group of freshmen
and sophomores next year to continue the legacy that Patricia Mattingly, Taylor Wilsonand Haley Libs helped
establish in back-to-back Indiana 2A titles.
39. Bellarmine Prep (Tacoma, Washington) Final record: 31-1-2; Last week’s ranking: 39
Pre-season ranking: 77
September 20 was a bad day to be a Lion. Bellarmine tied twice and lost once on that Saturday at the Kent Classic. If you take a look at the team’s record, you’ll see that all other matches on all other days produced wins for the two-time
Washington 4A champions. Three youngsters, including a little Schwann and a little Pukis, will carry the torch in 2015.
40. Harlan (Iowa) Final record: 41-2; Last week’s ranking: 40
Pre-season ranking: 43
The Cyclones repeated as state 4A champs with a senior-dominated roster and one senior superstar in middle Jess Schaben. Methinks these will be remembered as the glory days.
41. Dike-New Hartford (Dike, Iowa)
Final record: 40-3; Last week’s ranking: 41 Pre-season ranking: 4
Four years, four 2A state titles, four years of dominance regardless of class. That’s the legacy that Rachel Koop, Briana
Weber, Lizzy Blough and Brooke Morgan have created at Dike. There may never be a small-school Iowa public
school program as dominant again.
42. Auburn Riverside (Auburn, Washington) Final record: 36-0; Last week’s ranking: 42
Pre-season ranking: Bubble
The move down to 3A proved beneficial for the Ravens, who went undefeated and won the state title; as well as for senior setter Carson Heilborn, who today was named Washington Gatorade POY. Heilborn has signed with New Mexico.
43. Ankeny Centennial (Ankeny, Iowa)
Final record: 44-3; Last week’s ranking: 43 Pre-season ranking: Watch List
A school that’s been in existence for just two years captured the Iowa large-class state title. That’s shocking. Elite All-
State hitter Ja’ali Winters was the driving force.
44. Immaculate Heart Academy (Washington Township, New Jersey)
Final record: 41-1; Last week’s ranking: 44 Pre-season ranking: Bubble
Injuries kept hitters out of the lineup from time to time, but that didn’t slow seasoned setter Caitlyn Floyd. The junior
and three-year starter kept IHA pointed towards another Tournament of Champions title. Her efforts earned her New Jersey Gatorade POY honors.
45. Romeo (Michigan)
Final record: 46-8-1; Last week’s ranking: 45 Pre-season ranking: Bubble
There are some player who are BIG TIME yet largely unknown to the rest of the country. Junior Gia Milana is one such
player. When she got healthy, Romeo took off, all the way to the Michigan Class A title.
46. Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach, California) Final record: 27-8; Last week’s ranking: 46
Pre-season ranking: 57
The Mustangs had a better record and more success than at any time since 2008, a testament to new coach Hayley Lawson-Blanchard’s ability to manage a roster where every player has high expectations. Eleven graduate, but there is
talent back, including libero Emma Smith and MB Ashley Anselmo, and motivation to reclaim top dog status atop the
Bay League that Redondo has ruled the past few seasons.
47. Ursuline (Cincinnati, Ohio) Final record: 23-4; Last week’s ranking: 47
Pre-season ranking: Watch List
The Lions lost three times to Mount Notre Dame and one to Toledo St. Ursula and defeated everyone else. That makes them the clear No. 3 in Ohio. Libero Avery Naylor and setter Alyssa Steller return for coach Jeni Case, who will
have to work magic to find the offense to compete in 2015.
48. Roncalli (Indianapolis, Indiana) Final record: 35-4; Last week’s ranking: 48
Pre-season ranking: 62
The Rebels were one of five elite 4A teams in Indiana this year that took turns beating each other up. Four are ranked in the top 50. Seven seniors graduate for the Rebels, including All-State performers Kenzie King, Bailey
Schnell and Samantha Fogg.
49. Center Grove (Greenwood, Indiana) Final record: 29-4; Last week’s ranking: 49
Pre-season ranking: 28
Center Grove/Cathedral in the Indiana 4A finals next fall. I’m calling it now. Taylor Hammill andMadison
Smeathers will make sure the Trojans get there.
50. Farragut (Knoxville, Tennessee) Final record: 54-4; Last week’s ranking: 50
Pre-season ranking: Bubble
Farragut had two shots at Brentwood during the Tennessee state championships. Both times, including the final where Farragut won the first two sets, Brentwood wound up winning in five. Sophomore OHAlexis Parker, the Knoxville-area
POY, hopes to rectify that over the next two years.
The Next 200 (with Random Notes coming Friday)
51. Siegel (Murfreesboro, Tennessee)
Final record: 49-4; Last week’s ranking: 51
Pre-season ranking: Bubble
Random note: Three starters will return in 2015 for Siegel, which achieved the best record in school history this past
fall. The team has eight state tournament appearances in the 12-year history of the school.
52. Bettendorf (Iowa) Final record: 38-1; Last week’s ranking: 52
Pre-season ranking: Bubble
Random note: Said head coach Diane Lichtenberg: “I’m very excited about next fall. I will have a strong team returning with setter Megan Sharkey (Rutgers), Outside Hitters Danielle Pennington (Loyola) andJosie Herbst (UNLV), 6-1
Middle Hitter Maggie Runge and Libero Alexa Ito. They will be joined by a couple of talented, but inexperienced players. After our loss in the state finals, the players are motivated to finish their senior season with a win.”
53. Xavier College Prep (Phoenix, Arizona)
Final record: 37-4; Last week’s ranking: 53 Pre-season ranking: Watch List
54. Western Christian (Hull, Iowa) Final record: 44-4; Last week’s ranking: 54
Pre-season ranking: Bubble
55. St. Joseph’s (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) Final record: 44-3; Last week’s ranking: 56
Pre-season ranking: 91
56. Amarillo (Texas) Final record: 43-7; Last week’s ranking: 57
Pre-season ranking: Bubble
Random note: Said coach Jan Barker about the outlook for 2015: “Well, next year we lose 5 seniors, and all were vital to our team. But we do have both setters back, and two of our strongest hitters in Abby Warner and Emerson
Solano. We may struggle early as we will have all new middles, and a new libero, but hopefully by midseason we will
have made a lot of progress. Our JV did go undefeated for the second year in a row, so we have some talent coming up.”
57. Winter Springs (Florida) Final record: 28-4; Last week’s ranking: 58
Pre-season ranking: 35
58. St. James (Lenexa, Kansas) Final record: 40-7; Last week’s ranking: 59
Pre-season ranking: 15
