For people in the throes of modern-day parenthood, the notion of an empty nest may seem like a dis-

tant oasis. Eventually, however, most young adults strike out on their own, leaving their parents to adjust to life without them — at least temporarily.

Two such parents — initially heartbroken over the departure of their youngest daughter — begin to reclaim their wild sides, only to have their two adult daughters move back in with them in “Crowded,” de-buting Tuesday, March 15, on NBC. Patrick Warburton (“Sein-feld”) and Carrie Preston (“True Blood”) star as said cou-ple, Mike and Martina Moore. Miranda Cosgrove (“iCarly”) and Mia Serafino (“Shame-less”) portray their daughters, Shea and Stella. Stacy Keach (“Mickey Spillane’s Mike Ham-mer”) and Carlease Burke (“Switched at Birth”) round out the main cast as Mike’s parents, Bob and Alice.

Created by producer and writer Suzanne Martin (“Hot in Cleveland”), the comedy ad-dresses a popular modern trend. These days, the “empty nest” is disappearing like the notion of a secure retirement. Adult children who move back in with their parents are so prevalent, there’s even a catch-phrase for them: the boomer-ang generation.

NBC poked fun at the prem-ise in a couple of promos re-leased in February. Shot in a classic horror-film style, the clips showed Warburton and Preston terrorized by the idea of their daughters moving back in. One video even emulated the iconic shower scene from Hitchcock’s “Psycho” (1960), touting “You can’t escape. The terror. The kids are moving back home.”

All kidding aside, “Crowded” shows a lot of potential. War-burton endeared himself to mil-lions of TV viewers in the ‘90s as Puddy, Elaine’s (Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “Veep”) quirky on-

again-off-again boyfriend in the hugely popular NBC come-dy “Seinfeld.” He went on to star as the title character in Fox’s short-lived live-action ad-aptation of “The Tick,” and has landed numerous voice-acting gigs, notably as Joe in “Family Guy” and Kronk in Disney’s “The Emperor’s New Groove” (2000) and its sequels.

Up until now, Preston was known more for her dramatic work on TV, including her role as Arlene in HBO’s “True Blood” for seven seasons. In 2013, she won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in the drama “The Good Wife.” She had nothing but good things to say about working with legendary television direc-tor James Burrows (“Cheers,”

“Taxi,” “Frasier,” etc.) in “Crowded.” In a November USA Today article, she ex-plained that comedy seems to come naturally to him:

“He will say, ‘Put your hand on the doorknob, then turn, then say the line. It’s funnier.’ And you do it, and it is. It’s sec-ond nature for him.”

Playing a daughter of War-burton and Preston’s characters is Cosgrove, who may be young but needs no introduction to TV viewers. She’s been acting since the age of 3, and first captured the attention of audiences as Megan in Nickelodeon’s “Drake & Josh,” before starring in the lead role in “iCarly.” Her other credits include “School of Rock” (2003), “Despicable Me” (2010) and “The Good Wife.”

Compared to her on-screen sister, Serafino is just starting out in the biz. Her more notable credits include “Secrets of a Psychopath” (2015) and the TV series “Stitchers.”

Keach is the most seasoned of the cast, a television and film veteran with a résumé that stretches back to 1964. He’s perhaps best known for star-ring in the 1984 TV series “Mickey Spillane’s Mike Ham-mer,” and as the father of co-median Christopher Titus in the Fox sitcom “Titus.” He has also done narration for educational programs on PBS and Discov-ery, as well as for CNBC’s “American Greed.”

Burke, though not as well known as Keach, has an exten-sive résumé of her own and ap-

peared in such films as “Get Shorty” (1995) opposite John Travolta and “In Her Shoes” (2005) with Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette.

Though the cast is stellar and the subject matter timely, it was for Burrows himself that “Crowded” attracted so much attention this fall. In November, the second episode of this new NBC comedy became the 1,000th episode of a TV series directed by Burrows. The mile-stone was marked with a lavish and well-attended celebration showcased in “Must See TV: An All-Star Tribute to James Bur-rows,” which aired last month. The “Crowded” cast and crew are no doubt hoping that some of Burrows’ Midas touch rubs off on their show as well.

Luckily, they’ll have a little extra help from another TV icon. Betty White, star of anoth-er major Martin comedy, “Hot in Cleveland,” is set to guest star in “Crowded.” She an-nounced the news herself on Twitter back in October, tweet-ing: “Thrilled to be working with old friends and new on @NBCCrowded.” That, for many, is enough reason to tune in. White is set to portray a patient of Preston’s character who be-comes so enamored with the Moore family that she refuses to leave their home. “Hot in Cleveland” and “Frasier” fans may also be happy to know that Jane Leeves guests as the woman’s daughter.

“Crowded” premieres Tues-day, March 15, on NBC.

If there’s a lesson to be learned from shows like “MasterChef,” it’s that home cooks can be a force

to be reckoned with. On the flip side, a lesson that can be taken from shows like “Res-taurant: Impossible” is that restaurant chefs aren’t neces-sarily the cream at the top of their profession.

The idea of taking skilled home cooks and having them compete against experienced chefs is far from a new one. NBC’s “Food Fighters” is just one example of this culinary genre, but now Food Network has its own special ingredient to add to the recipe.

“Cooks vs. Cons” starts siz-zling Thursday, March 17, on Food Network, with “The Kitchen’s” Geoffrey Zakarian presiding as the show’s charis-matic host. It’s a pretty classic culinary battle, with four con-testants cooking against a tight time limit and struggling to work with a mystery ingre-dient that they must incorpo-rate into their dishes.

The big twist here, though, is that not all of the contes-

tants are chefs — some of them are home cooks. And no one, not the judges, not the audiences watching at home, not even the contestants themselves, know who’s who.

With a rotating panel of ex-pert judges, including “Mas-terChef’s” Graham Elliot and “The Chew’s” Daphne Oz, the big question is this: do judges in culinary competitions give more leeway to amateurs while expecting more from profes-sionals?

If the professional chefs competing think that they can let their guards down, they may be surprised by the drive to win — and the culinary skills — that the home cooks are bring-ing to the competition. There’s $10,000 in the pot if one of the pros ends up outperforming the competition, but if a home cook manages to beat the odds and show the pros that “home cook” doesn’t have to mean “losing cook,” he or she gets to take home an even bigger $15,000 prize.

Q: Will “Switched at Birth” be returning? If so, when and where?

A: Award-winning teen drama “Switched at Birth” will abso-lutely be returning for a fifth season, but it’s still up in the air as to when. The fourth season had already premiered by this

time last year, but there’s still no word on when the fifth will launch.

And it’s interesting that you ask “where,” because technically that’s changed. The show’s net-work, previously known as ABC Family, has rebranded as Free-form. From the viewer’s perspec-tive, nothing has changed, except the translucent logo that shows up periodically at the bottom of

the screen, but the network is, un-derstandably, making a big deal out of it.

Whether that’s the reason for the delay is impossible to say, but the show still hasn’t returned or even announced a date when it’ll do so.

But it will. The network re-newed it back in October, before the fourth season had even end-ed.

Q: The opening scenes for “X-Men” and “X-Men: First Class” are identical, despite being filmed 10 years apart. Did they redo it shot for shot for the second film, or did they enhance the footage from the first one?

A: The first “X-Men” film was released in 2000 and pitted an aged Magneto and Charles Xavier against each other. “X-Men: First

Class” (2011) tells how they be-came friends before becoming en-emies. Both films start with the same scene, of Magneto as a boy in a Nazi concentration camp.

The second film’s scene was a nearly shot-for-shot remake of the first. I say nearly because, in “First Class,” this scene intro-duces a new character, Sebas-tian Shaw (played by Kevin Ba-con).

“First Class” director and writer Matthew Vaughn said the camp scene was the first one he wrote in the script. “I thought, ‘What’s the best way of doing a prequel?’” he told DenofGeek.com. “I thought, ‘Let’s just start it shot for shot with the beginning of ‘X-Men,’ and then let’s see what happens"
