In an amazing show of speed and strength, James Stewart (7, left) dominated the second round of the 2011 AMA Supercross season with a convincing win at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, on Saturday, January 15. The San Manuel/ Red Bull/ Yamaha YZ450F racer set the pace throughout the day,

setting the fastest lap time in practice and then grabbing the holeshot and leading every race lap to record his first main-event win of the year and the 38th Supercross win of his career. The victory also pulled him to within two points of Ryan Villopoto in the standings as the series heads to Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles for the first time next Saturday, January 22.

In Phoenix, Stewart’s go-for-broke riding style caused him to crash in his heat race, but he rebounded to ride fluidly in the main event. Rarely during the race did Stewart look ragged at all, even though the Phoenix track was slippery and tricky in places, catching several top competitors off guard. Just as he’d promised after

getting a slow start in the opening round in Anaheim the previous week, Stewart rocketed to the front of the field in the 20-lap main event. With defending title holder Ryan Dungey and perennial rival Chad Reed outside the top five at first, Stewart’s only tailgaters during the early going were Kevin Windham and then Villopoto. But a fall by Villopoto on lap nine handed Stewart a comfortable six-second lead and, ultimately, the win.

“I really wanted to pull that holeshot,” Stewart admitted after the race. “This track was tough tonight, but I haven’t won in over a year, so I really wanted this one. I was even a little nervous out there. But I want to thank everyone on my team for giving me such an awesome bike. This feels great!”

“I’m glad to see James Stewart back to his winning ways,” said Yamaha Supercross team manager Jim Perry. “It’s very rewarding for the team, which put in a lot of hard work last week. So is the fact that half of the field was riding YZ450Fs this weekend, with four Yamahas in the top 10, including Joe Gibbs Racing’s Justin Brayton in sixth, Moto Concepts’ Kyle Chisholm in ninth, and Stewart’s teammate Kyle Regal in 10th.”

entrants came through the gate from places as far away as Canada, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and all corners of the Golden State. The gate crew kept the ball rolling with a smooth moto-to-moto transition throughout the 20-race schedule, minimizing wait time despite the large showing. Of course, CGC pays contingency at every round for Cobra, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM and Suzuki, and at every round for Yamaha except

round two, offering an excellent incentive to come on out and moto!The traditional home of round one, Los Angeles County Raceway, was forced to close when Granite Construction ended the lease. Heading into his second season in the Intermediate echelon, 16-year-old Jessie Huntley (853, above) stepped into the top five on a regular basis during 2010. Now seasoned in the super-fast class, his gun decks were fully stocked as he set sail in the 450 Intermediate, 250 Intermediate, and 125/250 Schoolboy (Through 16) classes. Huntley went on to rope the wins in the 450 Intermediate (via a perfect 1-1 showing) and Schoolboy (with a 2-1 tally) classes, and he finished third in the 250 Intermediate class (via a 2-9 tally) after placing second in moto one. Huntley will be competing at local races in 2011 with his sights set on Mammoth, the Loretta Lynn Amateur Championships, and the World Minis. He said he appreciates the help he receives from Callaway

Motorsports, One Industries, Maxima, Deft Glove and Nova Suspension.Huntley went to work in the first 450 Intermediate moto, taking the lead early, but he had company – Andrew Campagna (94, below, battling with Christian Campos, 92), and Troy Lee Designs/John Burr Cycles racer Blake Savage. Totally at home on the 450, Huntley shook the chasers and sped in for the moto win, with Savage second and Campagna third.

In moto two, Huntley again had company – this time Savage, Adam Call and Mitch Van De Mortel. These three were just was no match for Huntley, as he raced away, compiling a 10-second split over second-placed Savage by the checkers. Van De Mortel was third at the finish. Huntley (1-1) topped the class, with Savage (2-2) second and Van De Mortel (4-3) third overall.

Utah resident Blake Savage (762, above) received his vengeance in the 250 Intermediate class, shutting out the class with two wins and the overall.Two-time National Amateur Girls’ Champion Amanda Maheu came out with the family from Utah to have some fun in the 125-250 Women’s class, which had a full gate, with 17 other combatants ready to go knobby to knobby. Maheu also had 2010 Gold Cup Champion Shelby Ward and two-time Mini-Moto champ Erika Short chopping the throttle at the gate and ready to rip.Unfortunately, Maheu went down early in moto one, but she put on quite a show as she raced through the crowded field. Short was busy in first, as Ward, running second, kept her in check, in anticipation of an imminent passing opportunity.On lap four, Ward made an outside pass on the tiring Short for the lead. On lap five, Maheu, now in third, was pressing Short. After a failed pass attempt, Maheu attacked again, making an inside move

Huntley Kicks It Off! on Short in a corner, and now Ward had company! Maheu had come back from nearly dead last and passed her way all the way to front – and she topped off this spectacular comeback with a last-lap pass for the win! Ward was second and Short third.

In moto two, everything was back to normal, as Amanda Maheu (51, above) set the early pace in the front, ahead of Kelly Brown (110), Erika Short (813), Rachel Van Piepen (145) and the rest of the pack. Maheu pulled away for the moto win and the overall. Ward and Short were second and third, respectively, in the moto and overall.Sean Cantrell has stepped it up, riding with the older racers in the 85/150 Open class and placing fifth in the 23-racer field, second in Supermini (Through 13) class, and first in the 85 (Through 11) class – a great start in the larger classes for the Newbury Park speedster.

Rockstar Suzuki’s Tristan Miller (35, above) is a top-placing amateur racer doing

well in the 2010 Gold Cup. He came back in 2011 to once again become one of the best racers in the series. He won all three classes he entered, taking the overall in 85/150 Open, 85/150 (12-13) and Supermini (Through 13) classes and winning four of six motos.The 250 Novice class had an imposing roster, with 52 racers split up into two different divisions. Each division has individual awards for top finishers, but a final run-off at the end of the day was held for contingency placing. Dylan Merriam (559, below) won both of his motos in Division Two and finished on top of the heap in the largest class of the day.

Infineon Raceway

Infineon Raceway has reaffirmed its position as an industry leader in recycling, collecting more than 67 tons of materials during the 2010 Big O Tires racing season.

The raceway partnered with the Conservation Corps North Bay to collect 135,017 pounds of materials during the 2010 season, which included the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, IZOD IndyCar® Series and AMA Pro Road Racing event weekends. The raceway has collected more than 208 tons of materials (417,934 pounds) since the inception of its recycling program in 2004.

“One of the most obvious and effective steps we can take in maintaining a sustainable business operation is to ensure the tremendous volumes of packaging and other materials that come through this facility find their way into the recycling stream,” said Steve Page, president and general

manager of Infineon Raceway. “We don’t get 100 percent, but that’s our goal, and we’re pushing hard.”

Here is a breakdown of the recycling totals from 2010:

Infineon Raceway also works with Safety-Kleen to recycle used oil products at its NASCAR and NHRA events. Safety-Kleen refines more than 200,000 gallons of used motor oil each year at racing events and a total of 200 million gallons of used motor oil from customers throughout North America.

Infineon Raceway’s recycling efforts are part of a larger sustainability platform, which was officially launched in November through a partnership with Panasonic Corporation of North America. The partnership includes a solar installation system that will provide for 41 percent of the raceway's overall energy use, as well as a dual-sided, solar-powered LED board that will replace the current board, which sits on Highway 37, outside the raceway. PG&E provided a comprehensive energy audit of the raceway in

2010 and continues to be involved, offering energy-efficient alternatives to the raceway.

The facility will also feature clean-racing technologies on the racetrack at some of its major events in 2011, including the West Coast Moto Jam, May 11-15. For the second year, the weekend will feature the TTXGP U.S. Championships, which showcases the best in electric-motorcycle racing. The raceway also hopes to host a green performance summit for industry leaders at its INDYCAR event in August.

Tanner Sawyer (23, above) split moto wins with his fellow Honda rider Blayne Thompson to top the Moto X Novice class during the opening round of the 2011 M2X Racing Winter Cup Races Series, held at the A.V. Motoplex Motocross Park.When the gate dropped for opening-moto action, it was Sawyer getting to the first turn first, ahead of Thompson, Ryan Jones, Adam Moore and Mark Flinders. Thompson closed to Sawyer’s back wheel by the end of lap one, and he would pressure Sawyer up until the penultimate circuit, when he went down in a corner. Thompson was quickly up and under way again, but not before Jones was able to slip past for a second-place finish. Meanwhile, Moore has his

hands full with a determined Flinders but was able to hold him off at the checkers for fourth.Moto two’s start was a duplicate of the first, as Sawyer absconded with the holeshot, over Thompson and Jones. Thompson studied Sawyer’s lines for only a single lap of the jump-laden track before taking over the top spot.Thompson was on a mission, and he quickly put a couple of seconds on Sawyer en route to the second-moto victory. Sawyer crossed the finish in a comfortable runner-up position, which was good enough to collect the first-place trophy. The 2-3 tally of Jones earned third, over the 4-5 finishes of Moore and the 6-4 score of Jade MacDonald.

for the opening-moto win. Sawyer kept the pressure applied throughout the moto but had to settle for a close second in the end. Mitchell Miller steadily worked his way toward the front of the field on his Kawasaki for a hard-fought third-place showing, over Mitch Tieslau and Ryan Popp.Moto two was a Thompson benefit, as he shot out to an immediate lead and was never really challenged. Sawyer gated in second place and fended off the moto-long advances of Miller to claim the second-place trophy. Popp was fourth overall with 5-4 rides, followed by Brandon Pozas (7-5) and Robert Humphrey (6-7).

The Perry Mountain Motorcycle Club is one of the most interesting clubs in the Southeast. When asked what was the best thing about this race, one rider replied, “Perry Mountain kicks it old school” – and so it has since the early ’70s. National enduros, hare scrambles, ISDT (now ISDE) qualifiers, hillclimbs, dual-sport events, flat-track events, motocross races and field events, as well as other unique events, have been held in Reynolds Pasture, which was named after Millard Reynolds, one of the early founders of the PMMC.Now in its 13th year, this SERA/MSXC/SE&TRA Cross Country Shootout has grown so large since its beginnings that it now takes two days to accommodate all the riders

entered in this event. Saturday was for the Youth and ATV riders, while Sunday morning was for the Masters B and C, Over 60 A and B, and Over 66 (SETRA), Beginners (MSXC and SERA), and Women riders, and Sunday afternoon’s race was for the AA, A and B riders.Mother Nature usually adds her two cents into this mix, and she did not hold back this weekend. Saturday was a great ride day for all. The Sunday race was quite another matter, however, as Mother Nature threw, as they say in the South, one big hissy fit. For those who don’t know, hissy fits are ugly. If anyone has a Southern girlfriend or wife, I don’t need to say anything else. I am one and I am speaking from experience.Sunday morning started with some rain, and temperatures were holding steady just above the 32-degree mark. As the morning race ended, ice pellets or sleet began to fall on the racers who had just battled throughout the last couple of hours in the piney woods, and in terrain that varies from slick yellow-red clay to lots of sand and rocks and, blended within the open pasture known as Reynolds Pasture, hills, valleys and creeks.MSXC’s Chris Sumner said the morning was freezing when the flag dropped, but thermometer rose to a “scorching” 32 degrees by the finish.MSXC’s Steve Lambrusco got a bad start, in last place on the

front row in the Masters A class, but in spite of that beginning, he battled all the way up to fifth overall and a first place for MSXC points. The battle for Golden Masters points went to MSXC’s Don Rye, who was third overall in the Golden Masters class.Chris Sumner and Greg Tucker had a great ride from the second row. While the two are good friends, they really had a good race. Sumner stretched out a good lead for four laps, but then Gregg slipped past him, and the battle was on for the next quarter-mile – a good wheel-to-wheel battle leading to the scoring tent. They finished third and fourth, respectively, in Tri-Sanction scoring, but first and second in MSXC points.With a winter storm of epic proportions bearing down on the riders, the afternoon race proved to be a challenge for all. Freezing rain began to fall as the race for the AA, A and B riders began, and it continued for the next hour or so. The addition of a gnarly rock section on the trail behind the clubhouse (called the “Rock Garden”) became even more difficult with a coating of ice.Riders Thad Duvall, Steward Baylor and others from the GNCC series came south looking for work and some winter racing in the GNCC off-season. They led the pack of riders onto the 11.7-mile course, and stretched out that lead.

The number-one MSXC rider of 2010, Dustin Gibson (1/911, above), was in fourth on the first lap. He had been cursed with a blown shock, and he limped on in and changed the shock, giving up 15 minutes. Morning rider Logan P’Poole (738, below) assisted by providing a new shock, and Gibson replaced the blown one. After the repair, Gibson really put his heart and mind into it and twisted the throttle to make up lost time. He was able to turn some impressive lap times and ended up in 11th place in the AA class, third in the MSXC points (salvaging some MSXC points for this 2011 season), and 24th overall.

Prince (796, below). He was in 12th place on the first lap, and he worked hard to move forward, getting as far as eighth place – but on the third lap Damon’s luck ran out. His RM-Z450 had a newly installed big tank; what kind of mileage he would get had been a question, and that questions was answered on the third lap, when Prince ran out of gas. He started at the 9-mile marker as the rest of the pack passed him by and waited for a course worker from PMMC to bring him gas to finish. He finished the fourth lap in 13th place.

Getting the holeshot was little compensation for Shane O’Banion (837, below), the current MSXC points leader. Due to illness, he was hardly riding up to his potential. He did lead the way until 11 miles in but then crashed and fell back to fourth place, and then faded to fifth. Somehow managing to conjure up energy from whatever dregs he had left, he piloted his mount to a third-place AA

finish and third overall, and first in the MSXC points.

Zac “The Ice Man” Nash (45, below) rode well and ended his ride with a first place in Heavy A/Open A in Tri-Sanction scoring, as well as in the MSXC points and a 10th-place finish overall. Zac has earned that nickname: When he finished the race and tried to get off his KTM, he found he was frozen to the bike with a quarter-inch coating of ice, and his tent had a half-inch of ice on it. The Indiana place he calls home looked pretty warm and inviting after this day.

had only ridden at Maplesville once before, several years ago, in much friendlier weather conditions. Duval is well known for his skill and abilities, which have made him a Yamaha factory rider for the GNCC. He just happened to be “in the neighborhood” in South Carolina, for work, and thought he and his girlfriend would spend a “relaxing” weekend racing at Maplesville. He had ridden at Perry Mountain once before and, like most off-road racers, loved the place. The Tri Sanction at Maplesville sounded like just the thing for a midwinter break, and so they headed west to Alabama. Mother Nature just smiled.The 250F was to Duval’s liking, over the 450 he usually rides, and he thought it much better suited to the tighter woods and sandy soil, even with the cooler conditions. He didn’t get the holeshot, but did move into first place and stayed there for the rest of the race, with his head down and his mind in the zone for four laps for the AA and overall victory. Afterward, he found that the shortest way home was the longest way home: It took 10 hours, traveling east through Atlanta and straight into one of the worst ice storms that area had seen in some time. A sheet of six inches of ice coated roads and crippled anything moving. The arm pump Duval suffered was not from Maplesville but rather a parting gift from Mother Nature as he drove his motorhome and trailer back to

the warmer climate of South Carolina.Back in Maplesville, as the parking lot emptied out and the scoring tent was being packed up, riders were trying to beat a hasty retreat from that advancing ice storm. No matter which direction people went home by, they could not escape the effects of this winter storm. The South has not faced weather of this nature in quite some time. Make no mistake, Maplesville and Perry Mountain are challenging even in perfect weather. It took racers and fans returning home from this event up to five times longer than usual, but everyone finally arrived home safely.More than one racer commented on the excellence of the event and the club. The Perry Mountain Motorcycle Club has been doing many motorcycle events for many years, in all kinds of conditions. As that racer stated above, they “kick it old school” – and things are done right.
