Cartridge Filter Housings

IntroductionThere has been, and is, an increasing demandfor quality filter cartridge systems for steril-izing and polishing filtration processes. A largeemphasis has been placed on the integrity ofconstruction of the filter cartridges. However,the filter cartridge housing is just as importantpart as any cartridge filtration system. Withouta proper housing, the cartridge is useless.Even the best cartridge cannot do the job ifenclosed in a housing that allows fluid tobypass the filter, has external leaks or is notchemically or mechanically compatible withthe application. Quality gas or liquid filtrationsystems require both quality housings andquality filter cartridges. To meet this need,Sartorius offers a sanitary line of housingswith quality as the primary objective.

Quality of MaterialsOnly 316L stainless steel is used for all wettedsurfaces to provide maximum durability.Supplied O-rings and gaskets are manufacturedonly from FDA approved Class VI materials thatmeet requirements for direct contact withfood and pharmaceutical products.

Quality Surface FinishesAll Sartorius sanitary housings come standardwith internal finishes of at least 20 micro-inchRa and are electropolished. Electropolishingremoves surface impurities in stainless steelleft over from the machining and the finishingprocesses. Such impurities are potential sites

of corrosion and possible sources of contami-nants leaching into the product. Electro-polishing also smoothes the micro-scratchesleft by mechanical polishing, thus reducingthe total surface area the product will contact,and making it harder for bacteria or contami-nants to adhere to the housing surface.

Finally, electropolishing leaves a corrosionresistant, passive film on the surface of thesteel (passivation). Thus electropolishing isthe recommended finish for all applicationswhere cleanliness and corrosion resistanceare critical.

Ease in cleaningSartorius utilizes a unique filter cup designthat is conducive to a thorough cleaning. Theraised filter cup design eliminates small groovesand tight spaces that might be difficult tovalidate for cleaning, while still allowingcomplete drainage of the housing.

Flexibility Sartorius offers the widest range of housingsizes and design options to exactly matchyour flow rate and pressure differentialrequirements. Connections are available inmany styles and sizes. Custom designs andunique configurations are available uponrequest.

Cartridge Filter Housings

IntroductionWhether used for air or liquid filtration, ourindustrial line of filter housings offers aneconomical alternative, especially for appli-cations that are not bound by as rigorousrequirements as those found in the pharma-ceutical industry. While designed for lesscritical applications as well as the food andbeverage markets, Sartorius' industrial housingsare manufactured under the same proceduresas the sanitary units. The same quality standards run throughout our housing lines.When higher throughputs are needed,Sartorius' industrial multi-round housingshave been designed to meet the require-ments of higher flow systems and will yieldthe flow rates that are required.

Quality of MaterialsOnly 316L stainless steel is used for all wet-ted surfaces to provide maximum durability.Supplied O-rings and gaskets are compoundedonly from FDA approved Class VI materialsthat meet requirements for direct contactwith food and pharmaceutical products.

Quality Surface FinishesAll of Sartorius' industrial housings are sup-plied with a standard Mill Finish, very similarto a 120 grit finish or about 50 micro-inchRa. After manufacturing, all housings arerinsed with DI water and electropolished.Electropolishing removes surface impuritiesin stainless steel left over from the machiningand the finishing processes. Such impurities

are potential sites of corrosion and possiblesources of contaminants leaching into theproduct. Electropolishing also smoothes themicro-scratches left by mechanical polishing,thus reducing the total surface area theproduct will contact, and making it harderfor bacteria or contaminants to adhere tothe housing surface.

Finally, electropolishing leaves a corrosionresistant, passive film on the surface of thesteel (passivation). Thus electropolishing isthe recommended finish for all applicationswhere cleanliness and corrosion resistanceare critical.

Cartridge Filter Housings

IntroductionSartoclear P stainless steel filter housings havebeen specifically designed for the use in the bio-pharmaceutical industry. This new housing linecombines Sartorius experience with state-of-the-art technology to provide a high qualityproduct for any of the following applications:

-Separation of cells or cell debris-Separation of precipitants-Downstream processing of protein

solutions-Growth media purification-Removal of particals and lipids from sera

and plasma solutions-Retention of particles from bulk pharmaceuticals

-High flow rates and coarse filtration

Quality of MaterialsOnly 316L stainless steel is used for all wettedsurfaces to provide maximum durability. Sup-plied O-rings and gaskets are manufactured onlyfrom FDA approved Class VI materials that meetrequirements for direct contact with food andpharmaceutical products.

Quality Surface FinishesAll Sartorius Sartoclear P housings comestandard with internal finishes of less than 20micro-inch Ra and are electropolished insideand out. Electropolishing removes surfaceimpurities in stainless steel left over from themachining and the finishing processes. Suchimpurities are potential sites of corrosion andpossible sources of contaminants leaching into

the product. Electropolishing also smoothesthe micro-scratches left by mechanical polishing,thus reducing the total surface area the productwill contact, and making it harder for bacteriaor contaminants to adhere to the housing surface.

Finally, electropolishing leaves a corrosionresistant, passive film on the surface of the steel(passivation). Thus electropolishing is the rec-ommended finish for all applications wherecleanliness and corrosion resistance are critical.

Ease in CleaningSartoclear P housings were designed to allowfor a thorough cleaning. The center postassembly conceals small grooves and threadsfrom the process fluid making cleaning easier.While some of the internal components mustbe washed separately, riboflavin testing utilizinga sprayball is available for all the Sartoclear Phousings. CIP caps are also available.

Quality Control and DocumentationAn important feature of pharmaceutical processvalidation is documentation. All housings aregiven stringent inspections during and aftermanufacturing including dimensional checks,weld inspections, surface measurements andhydrostatic testing. Each housing is electro-etched with a matching serial number on the belland base. This serial number provides completetraceability for the Quality Control Certificate,Material Test Reports, and Weld Logs.

Filter Sizing

Unsure of What Filter to Use? Let Sartorius Help

Sartorius filter experts will pair the rightfilter housing and filter with your liquid orgas filtration application. Using your processparameters such as fluid specifications,desired initial pressure drop, volume, andflow rate, a Sartorius engineer will help youoptimize your process.

Sartorius does not just offer off-the-shelfsolutions, but customizes solutions basedon your process. An experienced Sartoriusengineer will evaluate your specific require-ments during any phase of filtration… fromthe laboratory to full-scale production.

Process fluids high in solids and colloids,such as cell cultures, lysates, or serum cancause premature and costly filter plugging.Sartorius technical engineers can optimizeand properly size your filtration train byconducting filterability trials on your fluidstream, under your processing conditions.Applications low in solids, such as buffer,water, gases, etc., can be sized in accordance

with published and known flow curves.

In order to determine the appropriatehousing size, consider the pertinent flowdata associated with the filtrate, alongwith filter type and desired pore size. Mostliquid applications require an initial pressuredrop of 5 psi or less. In most cases, thehousing's contribution to this is quite lowsince the greatest limiting factor is usuallythe filter pore size. Differential pressurecan be calculated using the following formula:

Q = Flow Rateµ = ViscosityB = Cartridge FactorN = Number of Filters (Round)Sg = Specific Gravity

In gas applications, an initial pressure dropof 2 psi or less is typically required. Gasfiltration systems generally have muchhigher flow rates than those of liquid systems, causing the housing to contributemore to pressure drop than observed withlarger volumes. Inlet / outlet connectionsshould be considered and made largeenough to eliminate unnecessary restric-tions. To calculate differential pressure for a gas system, the following formula can beused:

Q = Flow RateC = Cartridge FactorN = Number of Filters (Round)µ = Viscosity [cP] = 0.019

Total throughput of a filtration systemshould be determined on a case-to-casebasis employing small scale filterability tri-als. Contact your nearest Sartorius repre-sentative or office for information, or call(800) 368-7178.
