Whatdoesdocumentaryfilmofferasamodeofcreativeandcriticalresearchforheritage?Viceversa,whatdoesitmeantomakefilmsaboutthepastinthepresent?
Inthisevent,wewillscreenanumberofdocumentariesmadeaspartofdifferentheritageresearchprojectsatNewcastleUniversity,bringingtogetherfilmmaking,heritageandmemorystudies,archaeologyanddesignresearch.Thescreeningswillbefollowedbycommentsanddiscussionsabouttheexperiencesofmakingthefilms,theiraesthetics,politics,ethicsandpurposes,andthenatureofthescholarshiptheyrepresent.Thesequestionsbearuponthestatusofdocumentaryfilmsaboutheritage,nolongerassupplementary‘show-and-tells’concernedwith‘communicatingtheresearch’toaudiences,butasadifferentformofcreative,criticalandpoliticalresearchpracticewithuniquepotentials.

HiddenLandscapeofNaxosexploressomeofthelesser-knownlandscapesofGreekIslandofNaxosthrougharchives,monumentsandthestoriesoflocalpeople.ThefilmwasdirectedbyVasiaHatziyiannakisandispresentedbySteliosLekakis,whowasalsoresponsiblefortheresearchandwrotethescript.ThedocumentaryiscollaborationbetweentheMcCordCentre,NewcastleUniversityandGreekTVchannelERT.
WhoisEurope?byfilmmakerIanMcDonald,isaone-hourfilminsixactstorespondtodifferentaspectsofCoHEREproject(CriticalHeritages:performingandrepresentingidentitiesinEurope,fundedbyEuropeanCommission).TheactsofthefilmcovermultiplelocationsandmeaningsofthepastinthepresenttoquestionwhatEuropeis,who‘belongs’,andwhatthesignificanceofthepastisforcontemporarysocialandpoliticalrealities.Itusesasplit-screentechniquetoexplorecontrastsanddissonancesthroughapoeticsofjuxtapositionthathighlightsthetensionsbetweenandcontestsoverthedifferentcultures,experiencesandunderstandingsofEuropetoday.
