Summer task part 2

Film Trailer AnalysisKelsey Wheeler.

(Fright Night, Woman in Black and Avengers)

Page 2: Film trailer analysis

Fright Night

• Scene changes get faster as you go through to trailer building up suspense similar to woman in black except these scenes fade out in order to keep the viewer interested.

• Information added in in writing to help the viewer go along with the trailer and also to give them extra info about release dates etc.

• Light colours are used at the school to eliminate the sense of fear. Then the darker colours are introduced once again when the villain is mentioned or looming.

• There are ‘Devil markings’ on the villains wall to give a more fearful atmosphere to the viewer leaving them asking lots of questions wanting to know more.

Mise-en-scene …..

• Mostly head and mid shots have been used as the trailer is focusing on the characters more so than the actual plot of the story itself I believe.

• The use of Close ups on fearful objects, such as the girls hand on the door window were used again to build more suspense and a more fearful atmosphere.

Cinematography…..

• The use of Music and dialogue begins as if the trailer will be a comedy or of a more happier genre.

• Then both the Music and dialogue turn into a more sinister toner as the trailer reveals its storyline.

• The use of the voice over adds fear to the trailer as you can’t see where it’s coming from creating that fear to the audience of the unknown.

Sound …..

Woman in Black• Flashes of light added to act as

lightning which allows for quick suspenseful scene changes.

• Scene changes increase in speed giving a build up.

• Scenes cut straight between each other with no effects such as fading or cross focusing, so it just goes straight into the next scene. This means the viewer is thrown straight into the action and has no time to really act upon what they just saw.

Editing…..

• All dark colours are used to give the trailer a scary atmosphere.

• Old style clothing and transport are used to show the era the movie is set in to give the viewer an idea of the state of mind the director was hoping to achieve,.

• The main house used looks like an old and abandoned stereotypical mansion to give a horror style atmosphere.

Mise-en-scene…..

• Close ups are used for reaction shots to show the terror of the characters.

• Tracking shots are used to show characters running away from potential villains or just fear. This allows the audience to see that there must be something scary or something is not right as even the protagonist who is generally a hero is terrified and is running away themselves.

• High angle shots were used on the victims to show them in a less power position, this is a common technique used to determine the differences.

Cinematography…..

• Echoing sounds which I believe are to be bells in this case are used to increase suspense.

• Also a child’s voice is heard reciting a poem or a song possibly making the trailer seem more eerie than others but it still gives it that haunted/horror theme.

• The burst of sounds slowly lower in volume and continue back to the bell noise only revealing a small part of the story making the horror loving viewers want to watch the rest.

Avengers

• Quick cuts are used to make everything seem quicker and more exciting in this trailer compared to the fast paced cuts used to cause tension and fear in the other trailers.

• The producers company logo has been edited into the middle of the screen to make it centre of attention and also its more likely to get noticed being placed there than for example bottom left corner.

• Finally people don’t realise that there has been invisible editing to make the viewer forget that they are actually just watching a trailer.

• A more modern city has been shown to portray the film as set in current times unlike woman in black for example.

• The characters are frequently shown with weapons to reinforce the idea of an action genre compared to others. Also all characters are shown in their super hero outfits/uniform which again reinforces the action genre theme.

Mise-en-scene…..

• Tracking shots have been used on the hero’s to make viewer feel as if they are walking, running, jogging ect with them.

• Zooms have been used throughout in a variety of shots for example there is zooms on the villains face aswell as the hero’s to show reactions, this is called a reaction shot, then there is another zoom following up an explosion to make you as the audience feel closer to the danger and to relate to what the characters are going through.

Cinematography…..

• Voice over have been used to give the trailer direction.

• The music has a similar beat to a heart beat making it more dramatic.

• The different tones of volume and speed of the music help create a more exciting atmosphere to the audience and then when the music comes to the peak of the trailer the use of dialogue also makes it more dramatic.

Sound …..

Similarities • Both Genres use techniques to entice the

audience they may not be the same techniques as such but they both manage to engage the audience as effectively as the other.

• Both Genres follow a plot to make the audience want to know how it ends leaves them asking questions and in a deep thought about the storyline.

• Neither Genre really reaches a climax in the trailer as otherwise it could risk the film becoming a short film or in some cases not even a proper film if they reveal too much the audience wouldn’t want to go see it as you could probably guess the ending as you would of known basically the whole storyline.

• Both Genres use fast paced editing wither if it was to excite or to frighten the audience but both ways attracted the viewer.

Differences• More lighter colours were used in the action

film trailer too create a less scary atmosphere compared to the horror genre trailers.

• As a viewer watching the trailer and comparing them the horror genre trailers seemed to finish quicker as your on the edge of your seat paying so much attention and then your left without and ending or knowing what would even happen next to the protagonists.

• More close ups seem to be used in the horrors to draw more attention to the scarier props and characters, where as in the action trailer the closes ups only seemed to be used for reaction shots more so than others.

• The music varies in sound and tonnes more so to create suspense in the Horror trailers where as in the action genre trailer the music did vary within volumes but only to create more excitement rather than fear.
