film review - october 2009

Film Favourites from All Star Films by Thom Goddard Is there anything good in October? The leaves fall from the trees, winter is just round the corner and at the end of the month kids tear the neighborhood apart celebrating a pagan festival. Luckily the cinema is there to rescue you as October has four of the best films of 2009 hitting the big screen. Enjoy! Released: 2nd October - The Invention of Lying - 4 stars This is a good comedy in which everyone in the world tells the truth except for one misfit in the film industry, who discovers the act of lying and milks it to become the world's greatest star. The film is intelligent and funny with a real “Who’s Who” of comedy cast including Tina Fey, Christopher Guest and Ricky Gervais, who stars, writes and directs. Excellent. 2nd October - Toy Story 3D - 5 stars The 1995 smash hit comes back to the screen in eye-popping 3D. The story and characters have not changed but even if you have the DVD and have watched it a hundred times you will be astonished at the animation and almost-touchable 3D. Toy Story 2 in 3D will be coming to cinemas in February 2010 before Toy Story 3 (in 3D, if you hadn’t guessed) arrives in June 2010. It may be a cliche but ‘The Best’ just got a whole lot better. 21st August - The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus - 5 stars This film a marvelous spectacle of simplicity and limitless vision. Terry Gilliam himself summed it up as simply a man just looking for his daughter but it is wonderously entertaining and a joy to watch. Features an art house-megacast of Johnny Depp, Christopher Plummer, Colin Farrell, Jude Law and Heath Ledger, in his last film. It is dominated by special effects and gorgeous art direction but will entertain and amaze in equal measure. 23rd October - Fantastic Mr Fox - 5 stars Fantastic Mr Fox, directed by Wes Anderson, is an animated adaptation of the classic Roald Dahl tale. This is a beautiful film made using classic stop-motion techniques and features an all- star voice cast that includes George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson and Jarvis Cocker. It chronicles the efforts of Mr Fox to feed his family while evading the increasingly desperate plans of mean farmers Boggis, Bunce and Bean. Quite simply: beautiful and brilliant. DVDs to please Anyone who does not have Sky will be overjoyed this October as this is the month of the non- terrestrial TV box set. House, Series 5 (5th October on DVD rrp: £34.99), Heroes, Season 3 (12th October on DVD rrp: £49.99), 24, Season 7 (19th October on DVD rrp: £49.99), Bones, Season 4 (26th October on DVD rrp: £39.99) and Lost, Series 5 (26th October on DVD rrp: £44.99). If you do have Sky and enjoy watching DVDs that you’ve already seen on the tele The Ashes 2009: The Official Story (19th October on DVD rrp: £29.99) will be perfect.
