Jollibee to rise in St. James

Jollibee is finally coming to Winnipeg by the end of 2016. In March 2015, Filipino all across Canada were excited when Jollibee announced that they were going to expand into Canada.

Thanks to internet leaks earlier this week, Winnipeg’s first Jollibee location is going to be at 1400 Ellice, next to Starbucks and Pita Pit.

Jollibee is famous the world over for their pineapple-topped hamburgers, peach-mango pie and “Chickenjoy” fried chicken.

Winnipeg has the third largest Filipino community in Canada by total population, with about 662,605 Canadians with ethnic origins in the Philippines. The city is also the largest by percentage (8.7%).

Burton Got ‘High on the JaDine Love’by aLfie vera mella

Burton Cummings Theatre was full house on May 27, because of JaDine’s “High on Love” tour. ‘JaDine’ is none other than the loveteam of James Reid and Nadine Lustre, two of the most popular young Filipino celebrities in the Philippines today. One could indeed feel the excitement emanating from the crowd. Cheers and screams reverberated in the venue especially when the couple finally graced the stage. Customarily, local acts warmed up the audience. The three singers did a great job at that. Finally, the celebrity loveteam wowed the crowd with their singing and dancing talents, both individually and together as a pair. The two backup male dancers also stole the show by delivering an attractive choreography as well as their ubiquitous costume changes. But above all, the exchanges of romantic spiels between

James and Nadine were enough to earn goosebumps from their countless young fans present that evening.

High on Love” was another successful concert brought to you by Great Smiles Productions (Toronto) in collaboration with Winnipeg’s by Dennis Castañeda (DMC Production).

Chef Claire Snowball presented an 8-course dinner inspired by her Mestiza background at the latest Baon Manila Nights held on Sunday, May 22nd, 2016 at The Planit Restaurant and Lounge. Before dinner, she spoke of growing up with two meals on her table, western comfort food from her father and traditional Filipino dishes from her mother.

Chef Snowball is a graduate of the Red River College Culinary program. She is also a 2 time Iron Chef Winnipeg, a Manitoba CCFCC (Canadian Culinary Federation) Jr. Chef Competition

Champion, and a CCFCC Nationals Competitor.

The progressive meal was a fusion of contemporary culinary techniques and Filipino home cooking. Courses included sweet Filipino spaghetti using thick bucatini noodles with a tocino crumble; crispy pork belly with atchara, calamansi pudding, and crispy kale; and a risotto-like arroz caldo topped with benito flakes and crispy chicken skin. For dessert, Chef Snowball created an upscale Halo Halo with condensed milk ice cream,

pandan leche flan, coco de nata, and White Rabbit candy.

As a foodie, I'm proud to see Filipino food finally in the spotlight. With our unique flavour profiles that borrow from Spanish, Chinese and Malaysian cuisine, Filipino food is gaining in popularity. In a recent episode of Parts Unknown in Manila, world-famous chef Anthony Bourdain places Filipino food at par with the robust and exotic fare from Vietnam, Thailand and Korea. I believe that Filipino food is on the verge of being the next trend.

2016 Youth Role Model Awards

Dr. Jose Rizal, the Philippine National Hero, writes: "The youth is the hope of our country." And the City of Winnipeg's Equity Committee honours the achievement of the youth as role models at their annual 2016 Youth Role Model Awards held recently at the RBC Convention Centre.

“I’m so impressed by all the young people here tonight who are achieving such amazing things for our city. Whether its academic, artistic, athletic or community work, you are contributing towards a better, stronger more beautiful place. You should be very proud of yourselves,” Mayor Brian Bowman’s addressed to the youths. He continued: “ You can never be too young to start making a difference in your community or to start following your dreams. I want each and everyone of you here to know that you are making a difference and you can achieve your dreams.”

“I’m pleased that the City of Winnipeg’s Citizen Equity Committee has Youth Role Model Awards that deliverable for the motivated young people. It’s very important to acknowledge and to recognize the youths as they are a great example of how our youths can be a true leader and role model in the community. Wade "Kojo" Williams Sr. Award for Action Against Racism and Discrimination is awarded to the youth who have shown the exemplary achievements in battling against racism and discrimination. Both Cantiveros and Williams were formers members of the City of Winnipeg's Equity Committee who had worked and shown dedications and commitments to their chosen fields.

New appointees in Duterte administration

Sal Panelo, spokesperson of president-elect Rodrigo Duterte, enumerated more names during a press conference on Tuesday in Panacan, Davao City as addition to the list of Cabinet members for the incoming administration.

Joining the official family are former military attaché to Washington retired general Delfin Lorenzana for the Defense department (DND); former South Cotabato governor Mike Sueno for the Interior department (DILG); undersecretary Fortunato dela Peña for the Department of Science and Technology (DOST);

former Anakpawis representative Rafael Mariano for the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR); and Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) women's committee head Judy Taguiwalo for the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). The new heads of various agencies include NBI Region 11 director Dante Gierran as director of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI); former Davao City public safety command center chief Isidro Lapena for the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA); lawyer Martin Delgra for the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB); former Davao City police chief Jaime Morente for the Bureau of Immigration (BI); Ricardo Jalad for the National Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Council (NDRRMC); and former Marine colonel Nicanor Faeldon for the Bureau of Customs (BOC). Asian Heritage Month of May celebrates the sounds and colours of Asian culture at the ForksThe closing ceremony of the

Asian Heritage Month of May celebrated the multi-

talents of the Asian members of the City at the Forks last May 28 and 29.

Various Asian organizations had participated to showcase the pageantry of the Asian dances, the prowess of the two well known singers, the intricate movements of martial arts, the ever-popular hip-hop, and the musically induced exercises, making the Forks for two consecutive days as a venue for the vibrant Asian talents and achievers.

"This performance at the Forks is a collaborative effort of the different Asian performing arts,

focusing on the varied talents of our Asian community. I am proud and humbled by the passions of the performers who had been willing to showcase their talents," said Julie Javier, chairperson of the Asian Heritage Society of Manitoba. "We are proud as Asians."

Actor award at the 2016 World Cinema Festival Brazil for his performance in the indie “Mulat (Awaken).” The psychological thriller directed by Diane Ventura featured a love triangle involving a mysterious woman named Sam, her fiancé, and

her new man (Jake). The film also took the Best Narrative Feature award. Meanwhile, Sid Lucero was adjudged Best actor at the 19th Los Angeles Comedy Festival for his role in “Toto,” a film about a young Filipino service attendant who will do everything to attain a US visa. The movie also won the Best Foreign Film at the festival.

China hopes for ‘healthy’ ties with Duterte administrationThe Chinese government

expressed hope that the relations with the

Philippines will be “back onto a healthy development track” after ties between the two counties turned uncomfortable due to the territorial disputes over the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea).

This was stressed by Chinese President Xi Jinping to incoming President Rodrigo Duterte through a message sent through the Chinese Foreign Ministry as he also extended his greetings to the newly elected Philippine leader. The Chinese

President further stressed that China and the Philippines share the responsibility of maintaining and deepening their neighborly and friendly relations and mutual cooperation. The ties between China and the Philippines soured in recent years, with Manila

initiating an arbitration case against Beijing over the territorial dispute at the United Nations Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague. The verdict of the Netherlands-based international court is expected to come out soon.

New DSWD chief moves on to enact change

The new head of the Department of Social Work and Development (DSWD)

is a University of the Philippines professor and an activist who was a veteran of several street protests.

Secretary Judy Taguiwalo said she is proud to be appointed by president-elect Rodrigo Duterte as she has decided to join government to serve from inside the administration’s Cabinet. She however said would remain critical of the government but air her grievances in a forum different from the streets of protests. She would not stop the

implementation of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino program (4Ps) or conditional cash transfer, but instead study its implementation to see to it that it is not used for politics. She said she would

still oppose the burial of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos in the Libingan ng mga Bayani. She was one of the victims of martial law and was tortured and imprisoned during the Marcos regime.

Lizelle Mendoza: Young, Vibrant & Living Life to the Fullest

Imagine waking up one day with a large black spot in your eye. For many living with

MS, this is a familiar experience. However, for Lizelle Mendoza, it was a little bit different; she was only 11 years old when it happened to her.



For years, Lizelle and her family had no idea what was wrong. Her blurry vision would stop her from playing sports; she was timid and cautious. “As I kid, I wouldn’t try new things because I thought my vision would blur and stay like that forever,” she says.

It wasn’t until she turned 18 that they finally received an answer for her symptoms: relapsing-remitting MS. “The moment someone said ‘you have MS’ I thought my life was over,” she recalls. “I was 18. This was

supposed to be the time when you get to know yourself; this is when you’re supposed to find yourself.”

Lizelle has always lived in Winnipeg, but her parents immigrated from the Philippines prior to raising their family. MS is not very common in the Asian culture, and Lizelle’s family did not have any other family members living with MS. Plus, MS research for children wasn’t as robust as it is now. Therefore, the learning curve for her entire family to understand this disease was quite large. At the beginning, there was a lot of denial about the disease and reinforcement of the limitations she thought she had. “The traditional Filipino culture does not believe in Western medicine,” Lizelle says. “My mom is very spiritual and didn’t trust it.”

Also on the heels of the diagnosis, came the feeling of being tied down. “Everyone, myself included, said ‘you can’t do this, you can’t do that,” she says. But then something changed. As she grew into herself, Lizelle started making more of her own decisions and taking control of her own health. Her family learned about MS medication alongside her, and they became knowledgeable together. They now wholeheartedly support Lizelle’s decision to take disease modifying therapies and encourage her to live her life with no limits. “My family and friends basically said that I was doing fine before the doctors said anything,” says Lizelle. “They encouraged me to live my life the way I always had, and I agreed. I refused to let this diagnosis stop me.”

Due to the relapsing-remitting cycle of her MS, Lizelle often forgets that she even lives with the disease. However, there are moments when she is reminded. “When I’m working out, there’s a split second where, all of a sudden, my eyes will blur, but then it will clear up,” she says. “My body is telling me to slow down, so I do – and then I get right back up again.”

Now 26 years old, Lizelle is in her second year of nursing, a career choice that directly

stems from living with multiple sclerosis. “I’ve been in the hospital more times than anyone else in my family,” she says. “The care that the nurses give me and the knowledge that they have inspires me.”

Lizelle describes herself as the essential “girly-girl.” She loves movies and make up, but most of all, she loves to laugh. Anyone who meets her would also describe her like this. She always has a smile on her face and radiates positive energy. When asked what her secret is, she says that she treats every day like a gift. “You never know what’s going to happen,” she says. “So, just go with it.”

She didn’t always feel this way though; Lizelle had to learn it herself. “MS was a blessing in disguise,” she says. “Without it, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I wouldn’t know what I’m capable of and I wouldn’t be as close to my family.”

Through her journey with MS, Lizelle has become an active volunteer with the MS Society. When she was first diagnosed, she didn’t want to admit that she was living with MS. However, with the help of the Society, she slowly opened up. She created an MS Walk team, Team Faith, and also began volunteering. In 2011, Lizelle became an MS Amassador and in 2012, she became a member of the Newly Diagnosed support group. “The MS Society has helped me become more confident,” she says. “I’m learning new things about MS, about the Society, and about myself.”

At the beginning of her journey with MS, Lizelle was self- conscious about the stigmas attached to the disease. However, with new research, more education and media, she feels that’s changing. It’s been five years since her diagnosis, and she no longer worries about stereotypes. “Just because someone puts a label on you doesn’t mean you can’t be who you are,” she says. “Live your life with no limitations. Persevere, be honest with yourself, and good things will happen.”

Charo Santos makes film comeback

Veteran actress Charo Santos is set to return to the big screen this year

via “Ang Babaeng Humayo,” by award-winning director Lav Diaz.

Charo last appeared on the big screen in a cameo in Jerry Lopez Sineneng’s “Esperanza the Movie” in 1999 and in a supporting role in Elwood Perez’s “Ms.

Dolora X” in 1993. In 1976 she won the Best Actress award at the Asian Film Festival for her debut movie, Mike de Leon’s “Itim.” She is currently ABS-CBN’s chief content officer and president of the ABS-CBN University, and also hosts the TV drama anthology “Maalaala Mo Kaya.”

“Jersey Boys” premieres in Manila

A brand-new production of the multi-awarded musical “Jersey Boys” will

premiere on Sept. 23 and runs for a limited 15 weekend shows until Oct. 16 at the Meralco Theatre in Pasig City.

The musical is based on the story of the legendary American doo-wop group Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Nyoy Volante plays the role of Frankie Valli, lead vocalist of the Four Seasons; while Christian Bautista is Bob Gaudio, singer-songwriter and keyboardist of the Four Seasons. “Jersey Boys” officially opened on Broadway at the August Wilson Theatre on Nov. 6, 2005. In 2006, the show won several Tony Awards. It also won Best New Musical at the 2008 Laurence Olivier Awards in London and Best Musical Show Album at the 2007 Grammy Awards. The production is brought to Manila by Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment Group (ATEG).

Senators jockey for chamber’s presidency Senate Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano of the Nacionalista Party claimed he has 15 senators supporting him for the chamber’s presidency. Sen. Vicente Sotto III, for his part, also claims to have the support of 18 of his colleagues.

Meanwhile, an official of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) said the party would campaign for its president Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III as the next Senate president. The political blocs in the Senate include the Liberal Party composed of Senate President Franklin Drilon, Francis Pangilinan, Paolo Benigno Aquino IV, Ralph Recto and Leila de Lima. Incoming senator Joel Villanueva is with the CIBAC party-list but ran

under the LP ticket, while Risa Hontiveros is with Akbayan but also ran with the LP. The Nacionalista Party has Cayetano, and Sens. Antonio Trillanes IV and Cynthia Villar. The Nationalist People’s Coalition has Sotto and Loren Legarda and incoming senator Sherwin Gatchalian. Sens. Nancy Binay,

marriages, both parties will try to work, or live,

harmoniously and reconcile their differences, if any. This is called the “honeymoon” period and it could last for a long time or it can be abbreviated depending on how they relate to each other. It may sound simplistic, but they hope that by the time the honeymoon is over, they’d remain married, partners, allies or friends. Nobody could predict the denouement of their relationships, but as someone once said, “There are no permanent friends or enemies, only permanent interests.”

It did not then come as a surprise that America’s enemies during World War II – Germany, Japan, Italy – became her allies, and her allies USSR and China became her enemies during the Cold War that followed World War II. And these alliances – North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and U.S.-Japan Security Treaty – have endured for more than 65 years. And today, NATO has become the bulwark in the defense the 28 NATO countries against enemy invasion, which is crucial to the U.S. national interests.

And in Asia-Pacific, the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty has become a formidable deterrence against Chinese expansionism. Other treaty allies of the U.S. in Asia-Pacific are South Korea, Australia, Taiwan, Thailand, and the Philippines. These alliances

form a line of defense along the First Island Chain – linking Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, and Borneo -- which would deter China from breaking out into the Western Pacific.Choke points

To prevent China from breaking out, the U.S. has to have a strong military presence in Japan and the Philippines, where she can control two major choke points to the Western Pacific. These are the Miyako Strait between Okinawa (Japan) and Taiwan, and the Bashi Channel between Taiwan and the Batanes Islands (Philippines). With several air force bases, a naval base, and 50,000 U.S. troops stationed in Japan, the U.S. maintains strategic dominance over the Miiyako Strait. But it is a different situation in the Bashi Channel, which is wide open and defenseless. However, the U.S. had shown interest in deploying her forces to the Batanes Island and the Laoag City airport in northern Luzon. If the Philippines agrees to this proposal, it would shut off the Bashi Channel from Chinese intrusion… and effectively makes the First Island Chain impenetrable.

Recently, the Philippines and the U.S. agreed on the locations for four American air force units and one army base under the U.S.-Philippines Enhanced Defense Cooperative Agreement (EDCA), which was signed in April 2014. In addition, the former U.S. Subic

Bay Naval Base is a frequent destination for U.S. warships while the former Clark Air Base is used to host American surveillance planes that keep an eye over the South China Sea.

It’s interesting to note that EDCA was signed as an executive order under the Aquino administration. As such, it can be terminated by the incoming administration of presumptive president Rodrigo Duterte, who considers himself as a left-of-center politician. However, he admits that he had been on friendly terms with the communist New People’s Army (NPA), which makes one wonder: How is he going to deal with China in regard to the territorial disputes in the South China Sea?Bilateral talks

It is no wonder then that a week after Duterte’s landslide victory last May 9, China’s ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua paid him a courtesy call in Davao City. Zhao congratulated him on his victory and expressed his country’s expectation of working with his administration to “properly deal with the differences, deepen traditional friendship, and promote mutually beneficial cooperation, so as to bring the ‘bilateral ties’ forward.”

Obviously, Zhao was referring to “differences” on the South China Sea territorial disputes, which the Philippines under the Aquino administration had submitted to the United Nations’ Permanent Court of Arbitration. It challenged the legality of China’s “nine-dash line” claim over the South China Sea under the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). However, China refused to recognize the authority of the Permanent Court of Arbitration and indicated that she will reject its decision on the matter.

As Duterte’s “honeymoon” with China begins, there would be a lot of posturing by both sides. But

the crux of the dispute is China’s iron-clad claim to her indisputable sovereignty over the South China Sea demarcated by the “nine-dash line,” which has no fixed coordinates simply because it was arbitrarily drawn on a map in 1947 by China’s Nationalist government under Chiang Kai Shek. China considers the South China Sea as one of her national core values, which are “non-negotiable.”

If Duterte were to initiate bilateral talks with China, he’d be faced with a dilemma. China had in the past offered joint development in the Spratlys. However, she has one pre-condition: That the Philippines concedes to China indisputable sovereignty over the Spratlys. If China sticks to this pre-condition and Duterte accepts it, the Philippines must vacate all the islands she occupies in the Spratlys including the populated Kalayan Island Group (KIG), which is part of Philippine national territory as defined in the Philippine Baselines Law (R.A. No. 3046, as amended by R.A. No. 5446 and R.A. No. 9522) and in Article I of the 1987 Constitution. This would be a violation of the Constitution, which is an impeachable act. Either way, the honeymoon would be over before it started, which begs the question: What would be Duterte’s next step?Junk EDCA?

Faced with pressures from militants to scrap EDCA, Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT), Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA), and Logistics Support Agreement (LSA), Duterte will be confronted with the problem of national security. While he had said during the campaign that he was willing to junk EDCA, he is now saying that his administration will continue EDCA since the external defense of the country is weak. Indeed, with no warships and no warplanes to defend her territory, the Philippines would be at the mercy of China.

And once American forces are out of the Philippines – again – what do you expect China would do next? One needs to remember that when the Philippine Senate removed the American bases from Philippine soil in 1992, China took possession of the Panganiban (Mischief) Reef within two years, without firing a shot. With the Spratlys and Scarborough Shoal completely controlled by China, the province of Palawan -- which is less than 100 miles from the Spratlys -- would be an easy target. China could then claim that the Chinese had been in Palawan since ancient times. And like what she did with the Spratlys, Scarborough Shoal, Paracel Islands (claimed by Vietnam), and Senkaku Islands (claimed by Japan), she would probably come up with another “ancient map” showing Palawan as part of her territories. And pretty soon, the Philippines could become a vassal or client state of China, which would effectively deprive the Filipinos of their sovereignty.

Bully vs. bullyDuterte, street smart – or

“kanto boy” -- as he is, should know that it takes a bully to fight a bully. He should also be aware that size matters. In other words, a little boy cannot fight a big bully. So what the little boy would do is to call his big brother. In the case of the Philippines, Duterte would turn to big brother America, a bully bigger that China, for help. And this is where EDCA, MDT, VFA, and LSA would level the playing field.

At the end of the day, one might say that Duterte’s honeymoon with China would just be an exercise in futility. But the lesson learned would provide him with a clear direction of how – and where -- he should lead the country in the next six years.

This year’s theme is “Magkakaiba, Nagkakaisa” – Embracing Diversity. This year’s theme is a celebration of the diverse cultures, traditions and languages in the Philippines, our Canadian multicultural heritage, our differences in sexual orientation and religious affiliations. Winnipeg Acapella Favourites Those Guys Bringing That Show to The Garrick Centre

Winnipeg based acappella group Those Guys take The Garrick Centre stage for their annual That Show with Those Guys on June 4th at 8pm.

“This is the show I look forward to every year ,” explains group founder Bernie Pastorin. “We tend to go all out for That Show. A lot of work and sweat is put in and we just can’t wait to have our fans in the audience.”

With local singer/songwriter ATLAAS opening up the evening, Those Guys promise a show filled with acappella covers of pop hits as well as some original music.

“We also get to show off some sweet dance moves!” Pastorin says with a chuckle. “It’ll be a lot of fun. We’re bringing in a full light show so that the show

is as fun to watch as it is to listen to.”

Venues that have hosted That Show in the past include the Park Theatre, the West End Cultural Centre, and the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, but this is the first time Those Guys will be performing at The Garrick Centre. Derek Leenhouts, original member of Those Guys, is excited to bring the show to the Downtown venue.

Angler Profile - Marius Velena

There are many talented and passionate anglers in the local Fil-Can fishing

community. One of them is Marius Velena who is quickly making a name for himself as a hard core multi-species angler. Twenty-eight year old Marius had a recent photo of his selected as the cover image on the Government of Manitoba Angler's Atlas publication.

Arriving in Manitoba in 2010 with his wife Cherry and oldest son Gavyn from Cavite in the Philippines, Marius enrolled at Red River College to enable him to continue his career as a Registered Nurse. He has since taken on a role as an Orthopedic Nurse at Seven Oaks hospital. In his spare time, Marius has taken to sportfishing as his primary hobby, "In 2013, me and a buddy decided to try fishing. We fished at Lockport like everyone else we knew and one day I hooked into a Master Angler carp. After that experience I got really hooked and am now always looking for the thrill and excitement of catching my next big fish".

Marius, who considers himself a multi-species angler, has been successful targeting big fish of various species like channel cats, smallmouth bass, drum, walleye, and trout. "My favourite fish to catch is bass. I hope to become a great bass angler someday." This past winter was his first season fishing through the ice and he was able to ice several Master Angler northern pike, burbot, and perch as well. What's remarkable is that most of his trophy class fishing is done from shore, "I'm hoping to get a boat next year." Marius plans to continue his hunt for big sport fish this summer although with a new baby on the way, he might not be

able to get out as much as he wants to for awhile.

Lucky Supermarket opens in the Maples

Residents in the Maples have a new grocery store flock to. Lucky

Supermarket opened their second location in Winnipeg at the former IGA store on Jefferson and Adsum.

Customers lined up as early as 7am in the hopes of being one of the first 200 customers recieving a free 36lb bag of rice when the doors opened at 10am. Customers were also treated to gifts throughout the day as part of their opening day gifts and giveaways.

The grand opening celebrations included lion dance and cultural performances and kept customers entertained as they waited patiently in line before entering the store.
