Simbang GabiThe parishioners of St. Peter's Church are waking up extra early to attend Misa de Gallo or Simbang Gabi, the nine day devotion leading up to Christmas. Masses at St. Peter's on Keewatin are at 5:30am followed by traditional Filipino fellowship and community breakfast.

The Simbang Gabi is the nine-day novena masses traditionally held at dawn starting on December 16. The tradition dates back to 1565 when the Spaniards celebrated the first Feast of the Nativity in the Philippines.

Celebrate the Holiday Season at Assiniboine Park Zoo

Celebrate the holiday season at Assiniboine Park Zoo from December 19 to January 3 with free admission for children 12 and under. It all kicks off on December 19 and 20 with visits from Santa and Mrs. Claus, Scuba Santa, and Winston, the polar bear mascot!

The holiday season is a great time for families to come down to Assiniboine Park Zoo, said Janice Martin, Curator at the Assiniboine Park Zoo. A lot of our animals thrive in winter temperatures, so visitors will have a chance to see polar bears, wolves, snow leopards, tigers and more when they are very active.

The North Polar Party kicks off with the following activities taking place at the Zoo on Saturday December 19 and Sunday December 20, 2015. Quo vadis, Grace?

Last November 17, 2015, Sen. Grace Poe-Llamanzares had a reason to be jubilant! By a 5-4 vote of the Senate Electoral Tribunal (SET), the disqualification complaint against her was thrown out. With the vote of five senators, Grace beat three Supreme Court justices in a contest that should have delved into the legality of Graces citizenship and residency. Instead the five senators ignored the facts and waded into the murky waters of political expediency.

Grace must have felt like she was on top of the world and indeed she was until her world turned upside down two weeks later. With five disqualification complaints against her before the Commission on Elections (Comelec), the Second Division disqualified her. The divisions three members unanimously ruled that she is not a natural-born Filipino citizen and lacks the 10-year residency for candidates running for president. Double-whammy

Then two weeks later, the Comelecs First Division, on a 2-1 vote, approved the petitions of former Sen. Francisco Kit

Tatad, De La Salle University Prof. Antonio Contreras and former University of the East Law Dean Amado Valdez to disqualify Grace from the presidential race for the same reason as the Second Divisions ruling against her.

However, the double-whammy did not deter the former Montessori schoolteacher from pursuing the unfulfilled dream of her father whose stunning election loss and abbreviated life has become one of the most grieved political tragedies of our time. Now that shes just one election away from achieving what some of her supporters believe was an act of providence, common sense stopped her just five months away from capturing Malacanang.

But she questioned the Comelecs rulings and insisted that she is a natural-born Filipino citizen and that she meets the residency requirements. But the First Division said that Graces inconsistent statements on her residency indicate that she intended to deliberately misrepresent a material fact in her Certificate of Candidacy (COC) for president. The fact is: Grace stated that she has been

a resident in the country since April 2006, which is contrary to her claims that she was residing in the country since May 2005. It is indeed incredible to think that Respondent, a well-educated woman and already then a public servant with full staff support, including a legal team, would not know how to correctly declare the facts material to her candidacy for the 13 May 2013 Elections, the Comelec disqualification ruling said.

Beleaguered but not out of the game, Grace said that she would appeal to the Comelec en banc and the Supreme Court to uphold the truth, and the spirit and aims of our Constitution. Meanwhile, she insisted that she is still a candidate for president, which begs the question: How is she going to convince the Comelec en banc and the Supreme Court to declare her a natural-born citizen and has met the minimum residency requirements of the Constitution? Freefall

Its interesting to note that Sen. Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr. had offered to undergo a DNA test to see if it matches Graces DNA. If their DNAs matched, then it could prove that Grace was the illegitimate daughter of Bongbongs father, the late president Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr. who had been rumored to have fathered a child by Rosemarie Sonora, the sister of Graces adoptive mother Susan Roces. But Grace refused Bongbongs offer saying that it wouldnt prove

anything. But what has she got to lose by going through with the DNA testing? She has everything to gain and nothing to lose except the fulfillment of her dreams.

With the disqualification of Grace, the presidential battle has changed direction with the entry of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte into the race. The latest surveys show that Duterte is now the frontrunner in the race with Grace going on a freefall.

The other major presidential candidates Vice President Jejomar Binay, Manuel Mar Roxas II, and Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago havent been affected by the Poe fallout. But Binay, who had been the frontrunner for the longest time before Grace entered the presidential derby, is now stagnating in second or third place. And Roxas, who had been the stuck in the 5% club for a long time, has improved in his popularity ratings. However, the three of them are hovering below Duterte who seems to have solidified his position in the race. With Poe hoping for a miraculous ruling from the Comelec and the Supreme Court, she would have a difficult time dislodging Duterte from the top of the ladder.

In my humble opinion, Grace should abandon her presidential candidacy. If she loses in her appeal to the Comelec en banc and the Supreme Court, she would be consigned to the dustbin of history. However, if she wins a miraculous ruling

by the Comelec and the Supreme Court, there is no guarantee that she could beat Duterte, whom the people dubbed the Lee Kuan Yew of the Philippines. Realpolitik

But a miracle might just be what Grace who loves to wear white just like Joan of Arc -- needs to convince her followers that she was anointed by divine providence to deliver them from a sinful and corrupt political system, which makes one wonder: Is she convinced that she has the power to stop Duterte just like when Joan of Arc stopped the siege of the superior English forces at Orleans, France in 1429? Or is this all fantasy that would not happen in todays realpolitik?

And if theres anything that would come close to being a miracle, its the ease of how fast she lost all her political allies and unmasked her enemies when things got rough. Indeed, its a rude awakening for her to realize that in politics, there are no such things as friends, only those whod use her to pursue their own interests. And in the short time that Grace was every presidential or vice presidential wannabes desired running mate, she must have felt an inner strength that defied the political detractors who were bent on destroying her. But thats all behind her now. And just like Joan of Arc, Grace found out that there were more powerful forces out there that are masters of realpolitik.

And now its time to ask: Quo vadis, Grace?

The Museum has added extra guided tours each day. The Museum's boutique is full of last-minute gift ideas, including fair-trade products from all over the world, books about

human rights and branded museum merchandise. ERA Bistro offers warm and delicious food and drink specials - a great place to gather with friends and family for holiday cheer.

The holiday period is also the last chance to see XOXO: An Exhibit About Love and Forgiveness. This vividly colourful

The Dutch philosophy of life "Live and let live" is synonymous to its culture of permissiveness ("gedoogcultuur") earning Amsterdam, the capital and most populous city, the title as the "most liberal city in the world".

Holland is the first country in the world to legalise euthanasia - the practice of intentionally ending a life to relieve pain and suffering. Holland is also the first country to have same-sex marriage legalised since 01 April 2001. Prostitution, the oldest profession, has been legal in the Netherlands for a very long time since 1830 dating back to the days when this city was Europe's major seaport where sailors sought amusement along the canals surrounding the port.

Popping into the famous "Red Light" District, the Ouderkerksplein, is actually like moving out of your comfort zones taking you into amazing experiences just to say you've been there! The Red Light District,

the oldest district in the city with its network of narrow roads and alleys where an old church, sex workers (prostitutes) in their locked glass doorways, windows typically illuminated with red lights, curtains tightly closed, and a kindergarten school co-exist, shows how bold liberalism is in the city. But beware: no photos of the red light district are allowed! Dutch authorities treat sex workers as independent entrepeneurs and are obligated to submit income tax declarations and pay taxes. There is a prostitution information centre, a charitable foundation, to inform society about prostitution. It sells books and organizes lectures on prostitution and conducts guided tour around the area.

In Amsterdam the sale of marijuana buds and hash (hard drugs not allowed) is legal in coffeeshops (cannabis shops), not to be confused with a regular coffee shop. A licensed seller of cannabis products like weed, marijuana or hash, is known as a "coffeeshop" as distinguished from a "koffiehuis" (coffee house)

which sells coffee and light meals and has a green and white sticker in the window.

The Dutch is known not only for its culture of liberalism but also for its historical struggle of survival with water. Tracts of the lowland of the Netherlands have been reclaimed (known as "polder") for agricultural, industrial, recreational, and residential purposes from the water because a large part of the country is lower than the level of the sea. We spend more than an hour drive through the beautiful lowlands north of Amsterdam, known as The "Beemsterpolder", registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its creative planning, a reclaimed land from a lake with the water extracted out by the use of windmills.

The windmills are characteristic of the Dutch landscapes. Historically the windmills fitted with diesel and electric engines play a big role in the development of the country: pumping water out of the lowlands or performing industrial functions for the production of oil, paper and sawing logs or timber.

While in Amsterdam you'll find it irresistible to stroll through a canal district or meander through the waterways on a canal boat passing elegant merchants' mansions, gabled houses, churches, and warehouses dating back to the 16 and 17th century.

It's really hard not to love Amsterdam.

QPAM: Ambassador of Christmas SpiritDo-re-me-fa? Okey, let us start from the very beginning, and I know everyone is a good singer. Sing with your feelings and emotions, our caroling will bring the best Christmas spirit to our hosts," Frank Urbano, QPAM's musical director gives instructions to the officers and members of the Quezon Province Association of Manitoba as they rehearse relentlessly to Christmas songs to be sang to their more than thirty host families.

For many years, the officers of members of QPAM have been visiting families to bring tidings to their homes. And with the good charitable purposes: Yearly scholarship to a qualified student in Quezon Province who will pursue a post-secondary education. At present, QPAM's current scholar is Rocelle Ann Gando who will be graduating this coming March 2016 with a degree of Psychology at the Southern Luzon (Tagalog) State University.

"We do sponsor Rocelle for a 4-year course, to help her to obtain a higher education. And we are very happy for what she has been doing at the state university in Lucban, Quezon, and thru our caroling, we are able to sustain her financial needs to finish the course, and deep in my heart, I have to thank our advisers, officers, members and the host families for

helping us raise the money for our scholarship project, it is a daunting effort, and yet we are able to meet the challenges with a smile," said Maggie Chan-Urbano, president of QPAM.

QPAMs effort helping a needy Quezonian defines hope and warm community spirit

News had spread like wildfire: a Quezonian who arrived in Winnipeg more than 2 years ago and suffering from a terminal disease would like to go home.

It is a feeling as if it were happening in any family, and then, the advisers, officers and members of the Quezon Province Association of Manitoba led by Maggie Chan-Urbano, the president; and Alden Novallasca, the treasurer started emailing everyone to have a visit and give something to the family.

"We are all touched by the immediate financial needs of the Rosarda family as we visited the patient, Arnold Rosarda, who wanted to go back to the Philippines while he is still alive," Maggie Chan-Urbano,QPAM president, said.

Phone calls and emails were made and sent to all Quezonians and their friends. Continuous follow-ups and personal picked-up, QPAM was able to collect the donation to help the Rosarda family, formerly from Agdangan and Tiaong Quezon. Some other financial

donations poured in while the Rosarda family was getting ready for their travel to the Philippines. Arnold was able to travel and as he requested, but he passed away after hour of his arrival in the Philippines.

"It is a sad story of a new immigrant who asks for help when the needs arise and being a new permanent resident, he has a little circle of friends, gladly, Dr. Cocoy Aguilar was able to ask Arnold Rosarda about his hometown, our kababayan doctor immediately contacted us to do something, a gesture of hope, a great Christmas gift to the family," said Alden Novallasca, treasurer of QPAM.

QPAM was able to raise fund for that short period of time, amounting to $1,455,and immediately sent the money with an equivalent of Ph51,296.15 to the Rosarda family in the Philippines.

"I have to thank all our donors, our advisers, officers and members and friends of QPAM, especially the Seven Oaks Hospital Group Unit 7, and Rachel Yap and Weng Arquero for their donations,"Maggie Chan-Urbano said.




Winnipeg Jets Report

Making His Mark

In a year filled with inconsistencies for the Winnipeg Jets, forward Mark Scheifele has remained consistently productive. The Jets 2011 first round pick has stepped up his game and now leads the team with 12 goals and

has been a catalyst for the Jets by opening the scoring seven times this year. With all the talk about signing Andrew Ladd and Dustin Byfuglien to long term deals, Scheifele will become a restricted free agent next year and Jets fans will definitely want number 55 and his scoring prowess locked up long term.

After dropping a game in Denver to the Avalanche, the Jets returned home for a two game home stand. The Toronto Maple Leafs always have a way of igniting the Jets firepower at the MTS Centre. After giving up an early Leaf goal, Drew Stafford scored twice in the first period to give the Jets a 2-1 edge. The score remained the same until the third period where the Jets exploded for four more goals on Leafs Garrett Sparks. Mark Scheifele had a goal and two assists in a 6-1 triumph.

In a Saturday afternoon contest, the Jets faced off against their former Southeast division rivals, the Washington Capitals. Andrew Ladd opened the scoring on the powerplay with time

ticking down in the first period. Niklas Backstrom tallied for the Caps in the second period and a scoreless third period set up overtime. Scheifele provided the heroics in overtime scoring the winner after a lengthy review. Connor Hellebuyck outdueled one of the best goalies in the NHL, Braden Holtby, making 37 stops. After the game, Ladd talked about the hard fought win.

"We grinded it out until overtime and obviously got a big goal from [Scheifele]," the captain said. "A lot of positives from playing a tight game like that."

There was hardly any time to celebrate the victory as the following day, the Jets took on the Blackhawks in the Windy City. Marian Hossa scored a goal and an assist and Patrick Kane broke Bobby Hull's point streak of 21 games to set a new Hawks franchise record. Chris Thorburn scored the lone Jets goal and Michael Hutchinson saved 29 shots in the 3-1 loss.

The Jets found their scoring touch once again at home against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Winnipeg scored three first period goals to take a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes. Scott Hartnell cut the lead to a goal scoring in the second period but Drew Stafford and Mathieu Perreault pulled the Jets in front for good scoring in the third. Blake Wheeler added an empty netter to give the Jets a 6-4 victory.

It was dj vu for the Jets as they returned to Chicago the next day following a victory. Winnipeg-native Jonathan Toews scored on the powerplay for the Blackhawks and Patrick Kane extended his point streak with a second period goal to shutdown the Jets 2-0. Corey Crawford made 25 saves for the shutout.

In an always entertaining affair, the St. Louis Blues and Winnipeg Jets locked horns at the MTS Centre in a Central division showdown. Scheifele opened the scoring once again for his twelfth of the year. After a Blues goal in the second period, Chris Thorburn and Drew Stafford put the Jets up 3-1. The Blues, powered by Alex Steen's goal and two assists, rallied for three unanswered goals for a 4-3 win. Scheifele had a goal and an assist in the loss.

The Winnipeg Jets (14-15-2) take on the New York Rangers at home before heading for Alberta to take on the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames.

Christ is always in our Christmas tradition!Merry Christmas or Happy Holiday?

Looking around and visiting the malls or supermarkets, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays greetings have become staples in the promotional displays. While some big box stores have prominent display of Christmas decorations, slogans and greetings, there are stores that do not have the word Christmas. They put Holiday Food or Holiday Gifts instead.

Take Canadian Tire for example, which has a prominent display of the Christmas traditions, even the slogan has a heart-warming feeling: Canada's CHRISTMAS Store! At Home Depot: CHRISTMAS TOOL EVENT. Safeway has a bold "MERRY CHRISTMAS" greetings in the flyers! But if you look at the Walmart Magazine, its cover has "Holiday Central". There are many stores, big and small, with just a "Season's Greeting to All"; and one big box store has no spirit of Christmas at all, just some

last-minute holiday decorations. But on TV, radio and social media, Christmas is bursting into the mainstream!

Even Christian churches have beautiful Christmas celebrations, like the Simbang Gabi in St. Peter, St,. Edward and St. Patrick.

But why some people change the word Merry Christmas to Happy Holidays? Christmas Tree to Holiday Tree? Christmas Concert to "Winter Fantasy Concert", to mention a few.

For many years, many groups, mostly minority groups, aimed to change the way Christmas is celebrated. And according to Wikipedia, groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union have initiated court cases to bar the display of images and other materials referring to Christmas from public property including schools. Such groups argue that government-funded displays of Christmas imagery and tradition violate the First Amendment to

the United States Constitution, which prohibits the establishment by Congress of a national religion. In 1984, United States Supreme Court ruled on Lynch v Donelly, that the Christmas displays (which included the Nativity Scene) owned and displayed by the City Pawtucked, Rhode Island, did not violate the First Amendment.

Do they know that the meaning of Christmas is love? And why do we celebrate Christmas every year? Out of gratitude for what God did for us. This season, celebrating the Birth of Jesus Christ, we remember the full meaning of love, giving each other gifts, worshipping Him and being especially conscious of the poor and less fortunate. One may be

glad that there are many non-profit agencies celebrating Christmas by donating money, services and goods, like the Winnipeg Harvest, the Christmas Cheer Boards, Free Press Mountain of Miracles, associations which go out every night for caroling to raise fund for the calamity and scholarship funds.

Christmas is also a celebration of the closeness of the family. The Christmas dinner is not complete without our grandparents, mom and dad, sisters and brothers, grandchildren. Some of them even travel many miles just be with family. And remember, family is the very foundation of a society and from this foundation we want to build a much stronger society,

sharing the bounties, caring and helping each other.

And lately, I have received many Christmas Cards with a bold, red blood words printed on it: MERRY CHRISTMAS!

How about Holidays? Yeah, I might have a winter holiday somewhere in the Bahamas for more fun, sun, drinks and sex! Do not disturb my holiday by sending your "holiday card"

But with Christ in your Christmas greetings, you will send me the warm meaning of love, of sharing, of helping and laughter among the family members!

In 1932 Albert Scharfstein bought a shoe wholesale business in the heart of Winnipegs Exchange District. He was one of thousands

of immigrants who were part of the citys unprecedented growth spurt in the fi rst decades of the twentieth century.

That rapid growth in the Exchange District is framed by two signifi cant events the completion of the transcontinental Canadian Pacifi c Railway in 1885, and the building of the Panama Canal in 1913.

The railway made Winnipeg the hub of trade for western Canada. With the Grain Exchange based in the city and two dozen railways converging here, hundreds of warehouses that were built to store and ship goods from the prairies to the west coast. When the Panama Canal opened, trading patterns shifted away from rail transport, and new construction slowed down. The warehouses in the area were left intact. Today many of those buildings have been preserved as they were built a hundred years ago.

The individual merchants, such as Albert Scharfstein, whose businesses kept the neighbourhood active every day, also frame the Exchange Districts history. When Albert fi rst bought his company Patricks Ltd, Winnipeg was still a young city, less than 60 years old. Over the next eight decades his business and the city changed

signifi cantly. The city kept growing to a population of almost 700,000. The Exchange District was designated a national historic site in 1997, ensuring the unique character of Winnipegs downtown will be preserved and protected.

And Patricks Ltd. became Canadian Footwear. After a couple of moves from the fi rst location on McDermot Avenue, the business moved to the current site at the corner of William and Adelaide. When Albert died, his son Brian and Brians partner Pam Cipryk took over the business, the wholesale operation became a retail store, and they added the FootHealth Centre to more completely serve their customers. They also opened two Winnipeg satellite stores in Transcona and St. Vital, and, most recently, launched a Canadian Footwear Store in Calgary.

Overflowing Excitement at the Pinoy Christmas Bazaar

What's the best way to celebrate an anniversary? Host a Pinoy Christmas Bazaar of course! Haydee Madz and Jan Velena decided to spend their first anniversary among friends, and a few hundred strangers for a Pinoy Christmas Bazaar reminiscent of similar community bazaars and markets back in the Philippines.

The long line up of people waiting to get into the Pinoy Christmas Bazaar exceed the

capacity of North Centennial Recreation and Leisure Facility. Inside the small community hall, various food vendors served up traditional Christmas treats and Filipino food for sampling and take-away. There were bag sellers, cake makers, sign makers, network marketers and several financial services companies represented at the bazaar.

The rush of attendees at the beginning of the bazaar was overwhelming. Most of the food

vendors ran out of food in the first hour and left many walking away from the event empty handed, and cravings for Christmas goodies.

Admission the enter the Pinoy Christmas Bazaar was $2 and money raised from tickets have been earmarked for donations to a local charity organization, ANCOP - Answering the Cry of the Poor. A donation update will be posted on the 204 Filipino Marketplace Facebook group.

Haydee and Jan work full time jobs in the healthcare industry and have aspiring entrepreneurial interests. Based on all the feedback and a lot of ideas on improving the next bazaar, there's a lot of unfinished business from their first Pinoy Christmas Bazaar. Expect to hear more from the couple in the new year as they hope to continue to connect buyers, sellers and expand networks in the Filipino community. Happy Anniversary to you both!

Be aware of your priorities as leaving your work undone may have consequences. No matter how driven you are to your work, an attractive offer may be hard to refuse. Managing your time wisely and employing calculated logic will allow you to wander off course without any problem.

Riding a wave of enthusiasm can be fun and tricky at the same time. Be careful about saying improper words in a specific situation. Doing so may lead to an inappropriate topic. Fortunately, your analytical powers are strong as long as you remember to balance pleasure with practicality.

Start with a solid plan on how to face the day ahead. Get organized early on to stay strongly focused on your tasks and avoid other people from taking advantage of you. Taking the time to double-check your logic may be enough to put everything back in perspective.

Owned by Vera, the Alliance gym has produced fighters for UFC, World Extreme

Cagefighting (WEC), Strikeforce and Bellator. The fighters include Ryan Bader, Jan Blachowicz and Alexander Gustafsson.

According to Vera, the country has too much wasted talents. Putting up a gym in the Philippines is a great outlet for someone who chooses to take the path.

TRO on No Bio, No Boto liftedTRO on the Commission on Elections (Comelec) No Bio, No Boto policy has been lifted as the Supreme Court (SC) dismissed Kabataan party-lists petition.

The petition is dismissed due to lack of merit. The temporary restraining order issued by this Court on Dec. 1, 2015 is consequently dissolved, the high court said through Associate Justice Estela Perlas Bernabe.

Kabataan party-list argued that the new ruling violates the constitution as it will deprive the right to vote of millions of Filipinos in the 2016 elections.

According to the high court, registration is the only step towards voting but it is not one of the elements to determine if a voter is qualified or not.

Thus, unless it is shown that a registration requirement rises to the level of a literacy, property or other substantive requirement as contemplated by the Framers of the Constitutionthat is, one which propagates a socio-

economic standard which is bereft of any rational basis to a persons ability to intelligently cast his vote and to further the public goodthe same cannot be struck down as unconstitutional, as in this case, the high court said.



A Call to All Concert Producers and Local Talents in Winnipegby aLfie vera mella

Many of the concert producers and show organizers in Winnipeg have been so far helpful and appreciative of the local talents the Filipino community has to offer in our city by giving them exposures and by getting them as front acts, openers, and performers at various events and fundraisers and by treating them well during the shows, providing them food and their own dressing rooms or personal spaces. Most of these performers have also been grateful by giving their best during performances and by also volunteering other services that they could offer to the whole production.

However, it is time to improve the whole setup for the benefit and enjoyment of everyone involved. For the part of the performers, they should continue being professional in their acts and help the producers in however they can in the production and in promoting the shows to their own respective circles. They should also make sure that they give a well-presented rendition of their

music and art. On the part of the producers and organizers, they should start leveling up their support for these local talents. They should start including in their budget allocation the deserved honoraria and talent fees for such performers. After all, a show's having superb openers entices the audience to stay excited in time for the main acts and to develop a sense of anticipation for the next shows and a realization that we also have our own talents locally. It also gives our community a good impression, that we also have our pool of equally talented and passionate artists and performers who may be revered in par with the outside talents whom we are inviting to perform in our city.

It's just a matter of coming up with a mutually beneficial monetary compensation for the participating artists and performers in recognition of their performances. Everyone has to know that the time, energy, effort, talent, and money that musicians put into their performances are of worthy value.

For the performers who write their own music and songs, it takes talent and time to be able to achieve this. Practising their sets is also another phase in the process. To master performing one single song may take hours and hours of time alone and time together as a group on the part of the bands and artists. Spending money for their musical instruments is also another thing. Spending time and focus on listening to the songs that they want to cover also counts. The energy and effort that they spend in carrying their instruments around is another part of the whole endeavor. Dressing up and making sure that they appear attractive to the audience also requires money, creativity, and time.

Exposure is good, but it should be a two-way deal. Both producers and artists should also be honest in their dealings; they should be open to any suggestions and positive criticisms. They should be confident in asking questions to clear up misconceptions to avoid misunderstanding. An open two-way relationship will benefit everyone in the end, and

this will create a harmonious community devoid of frustrations, resentments, and backbiting. If there are some concerns, then both producers and artists should be willing to discuss it and talk about it in a professional and objective manner.

Many musicians and artists may be willing to play for free, but they will certainly reach the stage when they will feel tired and underappreciated because of this. Producers, in fairness, will be happy to have performers volunteering their talents for free, but they will feel a stronger sense of satisfaction when they start to compensate their talents; because that way, they know that they are appreciating all the hard work that these artists put into their performances.

The entertainment sector of the Filipino community in Winnipeg is relatively young, in comparison with the music and entertainment industry in the Philippines, which also continues to be bugged by the same misunderstanding between producers and performers and

the difficulties both of them experience. And this is the reason, we should all work with one another in a very positive way and a harmonious manner so that together we can move forward into building a better cultural and entertainment scene.

Let's start anew. Let the past shows serve as a learning experience for everyone. Let us all now look into the future with a more professional and truly mutually beneficial perspective. It doesn't even require costly and unfair talent fees. It is just something respectable to show our performers and so-called cultural activists that their talent, art, and music are really being recognized.

Both producers and artists are important. They need each other. One will surely find difficulty in operating without the other. All they need now is a truly good, honest, and mutually respectful and respectable and professional woprking relationship, in which each party is getting the recognition, compensation, and goods that they deserve.

Changes to Rent Assist Shelter Benefit Program Will Help Manitobans With Low Incomes Access Better Housing, Improve Stability, Secure Jobs: Minister ChiefLegislation that will enhance the Rent Assist shelter benefit and help support low-income earners in Manitoba is now in effect, Jobs and the Economy Minister Kevin Chief announced today.

Over the next decade Manitoba will need thousands more workers for good careers in skilled and specialized jobs, said Minister Chief. Giving people that are training or transitioning to work this stability now, when they need it the most, means they will be there when we need them the most.

The Rent Assist program provides financial benefits for people who pay more than 25 per cent of their income on rent for a modest apartment in the private market. It is available to low-income earners in Manitoba.

Rent Assist is also available to people on Manitoba Employment and Income Assistance (EIA) and promotes choice, opportunity and social inclusion, the minister said, adding it can be a valuable resource when they pursue training,

education and job opportunities. The portable benefit provides stability in housing, a critical piece of ensuring success in the labour market, the minister said.

Increasing Rent Assist has been a top community priority for several years, said Josh Brandon, chair, Make Poverty History Manitoba. Families should not have to choose between having a home and putting food on the table. We all have a right to housing, whether we are working, providing caregiving, on disability or on EIA. With todays announcement, low-income families have better access to housing regardless of employment status. It also provides legislated security that in the future benefits will not be eroded by inflation. We welcome this investment toward putting an end to poverty in Manitoba.

The benefit is also available to newcomers who are permanent residents of Canada, like refugees, Minister Chief said.

We welcome new Manitobans from around the world and provide assistance to help them as they adjust to life in our province, said Labour and Immigration Minister Erna Braun. Changes to the Rent Assist shelter benefit are one of many resettlement supports for new Manitobans.

The upcoming changes to Manitoba Rent Assist will have a huge impact on struggling newcomer families who are often initially paying over 40 per cent of their family income on rent, thereby putting themselves at risk, said Sally Nelson, executive director, New Journey Housing. It will not only make regular market rental housing more affordable, but should decrease dependency on the over-burdened social-housing sector, while giving people greater choice over where they want to live. I am excited at the positive impact this program should have in helping newcomers while they are first establishing themselves in Canada.
