An opportunity to be your MLA for Edmonton Mill WoodsI’m Roberto Maglalang and I am your Liberal candidate in the upcoming provincial election. I am running because our beloved province of Alberta is facing a serious economic challenge brought on by the collapse of oil prices. I am running because I share your concerns about the

For MLA in Edmonton-Mill Woods

Hard working Caring Decisive

Your issues are my issues:

• Health care

• Education

• Seniors

• Small business

• Support for families

Friends, I’ve been listening to your concerns.Together, we can build a better Alberta.

and vote for change and responsible leadership. More than 40 years of PC rule is enough! My 30 years of management experience in the private sector and academe give me the experience to bring changes to policies that we must have. I will work with energy and enthusiasm to build a better Alberta, a fair and just Alberta.

Maglalang Campaign for MLA Millwoods Getting a Boast

Weslyn Mather, Former MLA for Edmonton Mill WoodsIt is a pleasure to support Roberto Maglalang as a candidate for the Alberta Liberal Party. Roberto’s experience as a businessman and as a professor for Economics will be an asset for understanding needs and solutions to issues affecting our society. Roberto makes an effort to keep informed. He is intelligent, compassionate and energetic and will represent Mill Woods constituents with integrity and passion.

Harold Neth, Campaign Team for Roberto MaglalangI strongly urge the voters in the Edmonton Mill Woods Constituency to support Roberto Maglalang in the election on May 5th. I’ve known Roberto for nearly ten years, and he is a man of integrity. He understands small business and the community and lives in Mill Woods. He is a hard worker, easy to talk to, and a good listener who will take the responsibilities of being your MLA very seriously. On May 5th, vote Roberto Maglalang for MLA.

Chinwe Okelu , Mill Woods Resident, PoliticianRoberto (ak Bobby) Maglalang is an unassuming and intelligent gentle man. His humility and demeanour belie his series of accomplishments in managerial positions that he held with multinational private sector businesses of the economy. All it takes is a moment of chat with Bobby and his cross-cutting professional and transnational experiences begin to

Testimonialssizzle. One would have expected to find him in the extreme right of the political spectrum, but no. Bobby would quietly say to you, “I want to apply my accumulated knowledge and experience elsewhere, it is time to give back to my community”. That’s why I support Bobby and I hope that you too, will. Dr. Don Massey, Former MLA for Mill Woods and former School TrusteeI think Bobby would make an excellent MLA for Mill Woods. His strong commitment to rebuilding trust and accountability, to restoring education and health care to the high standards we expect and to serving the people of Mill Woods with energy and commitment make him an ideal candidate. Bobby listens and believes that together we can build a better Alberta.

Neil Evans, Campaign Manager for Roberto Maglalang Roberto is one of the hardest working people I know. Put this together with his vision for a better Alberta, an Alberta with a more diversified economy, a plan to get Alberta off the roller coaster that always includes cuts to important government services, and his commitment to bringing Alberta’s health care and education systems back to their former high standards and we have an individual who will serve the people of Mill Woods and Alberta very well.

Roberto Maglalang a Filipino Liberal candidate for Millwoods is on full gear campaigning for May 5, 2015 election. The political atmosphere is gearing toward change in a Progressive Conservative (PC) dominated province of Alberta. The budget and the looming economic downturn are some of the hot topics that will change the political scenario in the legislature. Lito Velasco our columnist enumerate the parties you have to vote for. Read and vote wisely this coming provincial election. The future of Alberta is in hand of the voters.

many thousands of jobs lost, overcrowded classrooms, long wait times in emergency rooms, long wait times for some surgeries and this never ending cycle of cuts to important programs whenever the price of oil drops. Underfunding and cutbacks in education and healthcare are unacceptable in one

of the richest places in the world. The government’s response to all of this is further cuts.

The failure of the government after all these years to protect Alberta from the up and down cycle in oil prices is also unacceptable. I’m committed to major improvements in all these

areas and to make Alberta a better place for all of us. I will focus my attention on:• Healthcare• Education• Economic diversification• Seniors programs• Tax reform

On May 5, please come out

Am deeply honored when nominated and acclaimed as the MLA candidate by the Mill Woods Liberal Party Constituency Association. An opportunity presented itself at this particular time when our beloved province Alberta is again facing one its most serious economic challenge- the collapse of oil price in the world market.

As we go to the polls on May 5, tens of thousands of workers are being laid off, sending back to their provinces or even to their respective countries. Adding to these woes, the Conservative government presented a budget that will further cut health services, prolong waiting time in hospitals for emergency treatment, increase tuition fees for college students and increase the size of classroom by additional 5 students in high school as well as in elementary schools, lessen seniors welfare, etc.

Alberta, the richest province, has the highest income disparity in Canada. Calgary has both the richest people and the poorest people I terms of percentage of the population. Alberta has the highest dropout rate leading to post-secondary education.

What do we need to do for Alberta?Change the government or elect more opposition people in the

parliament. The PC has been in power for around 44 years, almost an

undemocratic form of government. Former Presidents Marcos and Suharto were ousted after less than 25 years in power. Lee Kuan voluntarily stepped down after around 25 years of governance.

The Alberta Liberal Party promise, with expediency , to address the issue of growing unemployment by diversifying the economy growth models, improve and not lessen health services care by taxing a little more the big businesses that have been exploiting Alberta’s natural resources,

Am confident that thru hard work at the legislature, my 30 years of management experience in the private sector and academe where I lectured on economics and human resources management, I would be able to contribute by way of public policies in making Alberta a better place to live.

PLEASE VOTE LIBERAL PARTY.

Thank you.Roberto (Bobby) Maglalang

Let Vicky Venancio stay in Canada

It has escalated into a big issue, it became a debate in the House of Commons. Some lawmakers want

Vicky Venancio to stay in Canada, some want her deported. In social media, any post about Vicky creates a heated discussion and divides Canadians into two opinion.

What went before? It can be recalled that Vicky is

a temporary foreign worker (TFW) who arrived in Canada in 2011. Two years ago she had a big accident. She was biking to work one morning when a taxi cab hit her, the driver claims he didn’t see Vicky due to the sun’s glare. The accident injured Vicky very bad, it left her paralyzed from the waist down. She is now called a quadriplegic. She moves around in wheel chair.

Because of the accident, she can’t go back to work and renew her visa. Suffice it to say, she lost her health care coverage as well. Fortunately, she was able to enroll in a research program at the University of Alberta where she receives free physical therapy. The therapists believe, in time she would be able to walk short distances with a crutches.

by Erlinda Dolly [email protected]

A maple-coated Filipino Heart

But all she receives at the moment is physical therapy. God bless her soul but if she gets sick, she will not get free treatment at the hospital.

And because she was unable to renew her work permit, she’s staying in Canada illegally. In a deportation hearing last February, she was issued an exclusion order, which means she is just one step closer to being sent home. The actual deportation will come from the Canadian Border Services Agency where Vicky’s lawyer, Chris Bataluk, made a last resort appeal to have her stay in Canada for “humanitarian and compassionate” grounds. As of this writing, the final decision has not come out yet.

Meanwhile, supporters of Vicky who believe that she should be allowed to stay, have taken the issue to Parliament Hill with the hope that government will listen and step in. St. Albert MP (Member of Parliament) Brent Rathgeber, brought the issue to the House of Commons, saying: “There’s no question the young woman should be allowed to stay on compassionate grounds. There has to be some accommodation for people in these perilous situations. She came here to work and she was on her way to work.”

Another legislator who believes that Vicky should be allowed to stay is Edmonton-Castle Downs MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly) Thomas Lukaszuk. He said in an interview with CTV Edmonton: “We definitely need to take a look at how we deal with TFWs who injure themselves either at work or off-work hours. Do we simply just discard them because they can’t work anymore, they’re of no use to us, or do we take care of them?” Mr. Lukaszuk has a strong stand on this issue, he was even present at the

deportation hearing to give Vicky moral support. Even at his facebook page, he is vocal about supporting the TFWs.

Compassionate and humanitarian grounds

I’m a Canadian citizen and I respect the argument of those who want her deported. I’m a Filipino as well and I respect the plea of those who want her to stay. I hear both. But I have to make a stand: Let Vicky Venancio stay in Canada.

Those who want her deported say we should respect the tax payers’ money. Our taxes should go where they are supposed to go – to legal allotments. They should not be used to fund for illegal settlers in Canada.

Agree. I have no rebuttal on that. But our grounds for asking Vicky to stay is not on legalities. It is for compassionate and humanitarian reasons. It is of the heart, not of legal reasoning. We are not asking for a debate, we are asking for understanding. We are not bending the law deliberately. Vicky had an accident. It was not planned. Who would want to be paralyzed just to stay in Canada? Nobody. I do not see this as a precedent, if that is what others are worried about. This is an isolated case.

We send aid to oppressed countries. Here’s one oppressed soul right in our backyard. She’s in a perilous situation. Her life will deteriorate if she’s sent back to the Philippines. There, she’ll not get the therapy she receives at University of Alberta. The hope for her to recover and walk again will not be the same if she is sent home.

Vicky promised she’ll work and not wait for donation from the government. I believe her. We, the Filipino work force, left our families

and the comfort of home – to work overseas. Work is our life. Our bodies may not be designed to work two or three jobs, but our mind and spirit are. Because of the hardships we have gone through, nothing can stop us from working. Not even an accident.

The Good SamaritanThe Good Samaritan in the Bible

did not care if he broke the law or tainted his culture – without hesitation,

he helped the injured man lying on the road half-dead, believed to be a Jew. In the olden times, Samaritans and Jews despised each other.

Canadians are compassionate people and Good Samaritans. I feel very strongly that the government will let Vicky Venancio stay in Canada. I’m looking forward for that day when I can say, I told you so! And if I am wrong, I will cry with you.

Is Napoles’ conviction fair to the people?

by Perry [email protected]

PEREZCOPE

Reclusion perpetua, or 20 years and one day to 40 years in prison, was the sentence meted to Janet Lim Napoles for the crime of “Serious Illegal Detention” against whistleblower Benhur Luy, not for the more serious charges of graft and plunder she’s facing before the graft court Sandiganbayan.

Since Napoles is already sentenced to reclusion perpetua -- Latin for “permanent imprisonment” -- it really doesn’t matter much if the Sandiganbayan would convict her of plunder. The plunder charge that arose from the P10-billion pork barrel scam has been lingering in the graft court with no conviction in sight.

Now that Napoles is safely “hidden” from public view and scrutiny for at least the next 20 years, the pressure to prosecute her is off. The plunder case can then be put in the back burner, to simmer slowly – very slowly -- to

keep it just warm enough for the wheel of justice to move, albeit at a much slower pace.

But to a lot of people, particularly many members of Congress who allegedly have had illicit deals with Napoles to “steal” from their pork barrel allocations, the conviction of Napoles gave them a sigh of relief. Now they can go about with their normal lives with no “Sword of Damocles” hanging over their heads.

Indeed, except for three of their colleagues, life has been so good to these lawmakers in the past four years of the Aquino administration. With record amounts of pork barrel allocations and the “extra” pork they received through the illegal Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP), many lawmakers have a lot to thank Napoles for the use of her bogus non-government organizations (NGOs) to funnel and launder their takes from their pork barrel. The least they can do for her is to let her serve her time in prison peacefully… and silently. Of course “silence” would also benefit these lawmakers. As the late Senator Genaro Magsaysay used to say, “Silence of golden,” silence would indeed be the ambrosia for their political survival.

Conviction by convenience

But what I find rather strange is the ease with which Napoles

was prosecuted for “Serious Illegal Detention.” Was it a case of “conviction by convenience,” which Napoles may have agreed to in order to satisfy some powerful people who’d want her “silence” in exchange for her life? And what would be a better choice: life in prison or life in the afterworld?

But how about the lives of the three senators – ex-Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile and Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Bong Revilla -- who are now in detention for the plunder charges relating to the Napoles pork barrel scam? Charged with a non-bailable offense, the three could be in detention for the rest of their lives if Napoles refused to cooperate and testify against them. And why should she? She’s already incarcerated and won’t see the light of day for the next 20 years. To help in the prosecution as a state witness against the three senators wouldn’t help her case unless the president would grant her executive clemency during the Christmas season this year.

The question is: Would President Aquino pardon Napoles? While it has been speculated that Napoles was politically connected with Aquino as evidenced by photos taken of Aquino and members of the Napoles family during political and fund-raising events, an executive clemency for Napoles seems like a political hot potato.

But didn’t former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo pardon convicted plunderer ex-president Joseph “Erap” Estrada? It would then surprise no one if the next president would grant clemency to Napoles and the three senators, which would makes one wonder: Who would be the president most likely to pardon Napoles and the three senators?

Presidential derby

Today, the presidential front-runner is Vice President Jejomar “Jojo” Binay, who, so far, is the only one who has declared his candidacy. However, close behind him – and getting closer – is Sen. Grace Poe, who has yet to declare her candidacy but the bets are on that she will run for president. The latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey shows Binay with a popularity rating of 36% last March, down from 37% in December. But Poe’s popularity has increased significantly, from 21% in December to 31% last March. With the presidential election still a little over a year away, their ratings could change dramatically in the following months.

Assuming that the two main contenders for the presidency are Binay and Poe, who, between them, would most likely, grant clemency to Napoles and the three senators? To some people, it’s a no-brainer – “Of course, Binay will pardon them, stupid!” I concede, but how about Poe? Hmm…

RealpolitikWhile Poe doesn’t seem

to have any direct connection to Napoles or any of the three senators, there would be powerful and influential people who would seek clemency for them. But would she be able resist them, some of whom might be big contributors to her presidential campaign? She might be able to resist at the beginning of her term. But it would be a different situation once realpolitik takes hold. By that time, horse-trading would once again be the norm rather than the exception.

Which makes one wonder if Napoles and the three senators would ever be convicted of plunder? It reminds me of American gangster Alfonse Capone. Unable to gather evidence to prosecute and convict Capone of more serious crimes, the Federal government decided to charge him for a much lesser charge, tax evasion. In 1931, Capone was found guilty and sentenced to 11 years in prison. He was never found guilty of any of the more serious crimes he committed. Is Janet Lim Napoles going to be the Philippines’ Alfonse Capone, never to be convicted of more serious crimes?

For now, we have to settle for a conviction to a lesser crime of “Serious Illegal Detention,” which begs the question: Is Napoles’ conviction fair to the people?

Amarjeet Sohi Calls on Federal Government to Grant Quadriplegic, Former Temporary Foreign Worker Vicky Venancio Status

Edmonton City Councillor Amarjeet Sohi is calling on federal Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Chris Alexander to grant Vicky Venancio status

in Canada on humanitarian and compassionate grounds.

Venancio is a former temporary foreign worker who came to Edmonton in 2011. Shortly after arriving, Venancio was struck by a vehicle, and left quadriplegic and wheel-chair bound. In February of this year, the federal government initiated the process to deport Venancio to the Philippines, where there are concerns that she will not be able to receive the same quality of care and support.

"Vicky's last hope is Minister Alexander, who can exercise his discretion and grant Vicky permanent residence on

humanitarian and compassionate grounds," said Sohi. "For this reason, I call on the Minister to do the right thing, and grant Vicky status and allow her to remain in Canada."

"Vicky came to Canada for a better life. Sadly, things took a turn when she was injured, and then subsequently denied health coverage for her treatment and recovery. But through her determination, Vicky has overcome all the obstacles she has faced. Now, Vicky faces her biggest challenge yet, and — as a Canadian — I feel it is incumbent on me to lend my support in her efforts."

"A society is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable members. How we treat Vicky is a reflection of who we are as Canadians and the values that define us as a people. We are a compassionate and inclusive society that comes to the aid of individuals like Vicky."

Sohi adds his voice to growing chorus of Canadians calling on the federal government to allow Venancio to remain in Canada. Thousands have expressed their support online by signing an online petition, donating to her legal campaign and sharing her situation on social media. Supporters even include

the Alberta Health Minister, Stephen Mandel, and Alberta Minister of Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour, Ric McIver, who have publicly stated their intent to raise Venancio's situation with Minister Alexander.

"I am overwhelmed by the support I have received from people across Alberta and Canada," said Venancio. "I cannot express the appreciation I have towards all those who have stood beside me and helped me through the various challenges I have faced since my accident. Without their support and encouragement, I am not sure where I would be today."

Experts to treat Magellan’s Cross Mayweather says fight is ‘must see’ TV

US envoy spearheads Pasig River rehab

Experts from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP)

have been commissioned by the Augustinian religious community to conduct treatment to the tindalo-wood incased Magellan’s Cross, after it was discovered that it has been attacked by insects.

The famous landmark located along Magallanes Street in downtown Cebu City, was planted on the site where the pavilion housing the Cross has been built, by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan 494 years ago. The landmark symbolizes the birth of Christianity in the Philippines.

Fr. Harold Rentoria, OSA, Chairman of the Commission on Cultural Heritage of the Augustinian Fathers said the tile-roofed, octagonal pavilion will be closed to tourists while the treatment process is ongoing.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. personally believes that his fight with Manny Pacquiao will be must see TV.

The richest fight in boxing history which is worth $99.95 for fans to watch at home, could earn $180 million for the unbeaten American. Mayweather said it's a matchup fans have waited five years to see and it will likely go down as one of the biggest fights ever. Although he acknowledged that the Filipino lefty poses some problems in the ring, he said he will be able to adapt to Pacquiao's style as the fight goes on.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach, said the plan is to make Mayweather work every second of every round and not be able to take any time off.

The US Embassy in cooperation with ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya

Foundation is leading a clean-up drive to rehabilitate the Pasig River, the main waterway that crosses Metropolitan Manila.

US Ambassador to the Philippines Philip Goldberg said that people living near the polluted waterways should understand the economic and environmental damage caused

by dumping garbage to the waterways that feed into the Pasig River. Goldberg added that the US has contributed more than $46 million in biodiversity and environmental initiatives in the country, as he asked the Filipinos to join the initiative. The cleanup drive is part of Earth Jam 2015, one of the buildup programs of the US Embassy for 2015 Earth Day.

Jerry Caingcoy, The Rise of a Diversity Champion

Every once in a while, certain individuals realized that there is more to life than just

a normal job, raise a family, pay the bills, and watch life pass on by. These individuals look at the world around them and ask themselves, “How can I make things better for my fellow Filipinos?” They are burdened by the need to help those in need, to set an example for others to follow, and to create an image that would make every Filipino in this country proud.

One of those individuals I know is Jerry Caingcoy. He is a Diversity Champion in the making. Actually, I am convinced that he already is Calgary’s Filipino Diversity Champion (although he is not officially recognized as one, but I think this is only a matter of time). Here are my reasons why:

Prior to coming to Canada, Jerry worked as an executive in local and multinational companies in the Philippines. He also founded a Montessori school which is now

complete with pre-school and elementary classes. Jerry then decided to move to Canada where he had to start his professional career all over again. From an entry level position, Jerry worked his way up to a management position with one of the largest organizations in Calgary. Jerry showed that we can rise above the ranks if we truly work at it.

You might say, “So what’s so special about working and getting promoted after several years? There are many others who have done the same.”

Well consider this:While fully employed, Jerry

continues to connect and network with other Filipinos and Filipino groups in Calgary. He organized fundraising events to help disaster victims in the Philippines. He coordinated networking events resulting in a stronger connection amongst Filipino. Through his efforts, many Filipinos in Calgary have a group they can turn to for guidance, feedback, motivation, and inspiration!

Here’s more:Jerry is a TV host for TV Filipino

featured by a major cable network watched by Filipinos in Canada. He informs them of upcoming events within the Filipino community. He conducts interviews of Filipinos who have an inspiring story to share. His efforts have helped bring the Filipino community together, inspiring many new comers who are finding it difficult to adjust in their new environment.

Not totally inspired yet? Let me add this piece:

Jerry helped many immigrant

Filipinos adjust to their new home. He has been labelled as the unofficial “311” for many new immigrants in Calgary. They approach him for many practical help on getting started in their new city among other things by sharing his experience as a new immigrant himself.

Okay, now here’s what really inspire me about Jerry. On top of all these “volunteer” out-of-the office sacrifices (yes, I say sacrifice because he is giving a lot of his personal time to do all these), Jerry is a member of the International Lion’s Club (currently he is the chairman of the Pride of Community Award). He also volunteers as a mentor for the Calgary Region Immigrant Employment Council (CRIEC) where he mentors immigrant professionals so they can become successful in Canada. And on top of this, he helps Temporary Foreign Workers (TFW’s) through his local church.

One word to describe Jerry: WOW!

When I think of what Jerry is doing, I am reminded of a quote by John F. Kennedy:“..ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.” In Jerry’s case, it’s “ask not what your community can do for you – ask what you can do for your community.”

While we are inspired by individuals such as Manny Pacquiao, Bill Gates, or Mandela, there are Filipinos among us who are champions in bringing people together to make our place a better place. These individuals inspire us to do more, be more, and give more to others. Jerry

has only been in Canada for less than a decade, but he has already risen as Calgary’s diversity champion. I look forward to hearing what Jerry will do in the next few years. Better yet, I wonder what we could achieve as Filipinos if we follow his examples in the next several years.

To Jerry I say this: Thank you for your inspiration! You deserve to be our Diversity Champion!

Karilagan Dance Society 44th Anniversary Another Huge SuccessKarilagan Dance Society's 44th Anniversary celebration at the Radisson Hotel & Convention Centre last March 14, 2015 showcased the different tribal dances of the Philippines. From Cordillera Region, tribal dances like Bumayah, Idaw, Banga, Salidsid,

‘Kid Kulafu,’ a knockout of a movie

Fil-Canadian hip-hop kids wow host Ellen DeGeneres

Soon-to-be parents Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera

Kid Kulafu is a touching movie that offers a look into the humble beginnings of Manny Pacquiao to his first step into the boxing ring. The film got its title after a brand of wine whose bottles Manny (Buboy Villar) collected as a child, for his uncle Sardo (Cesar Montano) in exchange for the help he extends to his family. Uncle Sardo was also his first boxing mentor,

The film relates Manny’s early life mired in extreme poverty in the mountains of Bukidnon in southern Philippines. The experience must have galvanized the young Pacman’s strong-willed character and unbending desire to make things better for his family,

Yes. It’s confirmed. Kapuso primetime royal couple Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera-Dantes announced that they are having a baby!

The happily married couple made the exciting announcement in an exclusive interview with Jessica Soho aired Monday on “24 Oras”.

“Gusto lang naming sabihin na nagbunga ang aming pagmamahalan, at nabiyayaan kami ng Panginoon ng isa sa pinakamagandang regalo na pupuwedeng ibigay and that’s the gift of life,” the actor said.

In previous interviews after their fairytale wedding, the actress admitted being ready to having a baby.

“Totoo talaga, gusto namin (na magka-baby) na, pero hindi mo naman mapa-plano yan. As soon as possible sana. Gustong gusto na din niya [Dingdong],” the actress said.

Dantes also confirmed the good news in a post on his official Instagram account.

“We are extremely grateful because the greatest gift called life has already been bestowed upon us by God. In behalf of my wife, and our coming baby, we thank all those who prayed for, and with is. Faith really has its way of fulfilling lifelong dreams,” the actor wrote.

Dingdong and Marian tied the knot last December 30 at Immaculate Concepcion Cathedral in Cubao, Quezon City.

Filipino-Canadian hip-hop duo, Andre Camille Bonifacio and Ryan Ancheta, both 12 years old, recently graced the “Ellen DeGeneres Show.”

Show host Ellen personally invited the pair, popularly known as Lucky Aces, after seeing their video on YouTube. In the "Ellen” show, they danced to DJ Snake and Lil Jon’s “Turn Down For What” as shown in a video clip posted on the popular program’s official website,

After their performance, Ellen interviewed the Vancouver kids for the meaning behind their name. Ancheta said his parents called him Lucky because he survived a premature birth. The Aces on the other hand, refers to AC’s nickname. The kids told

while shaping his own destiny. Eventually the family moved to General Santos City after getting caught in middle of a firefight between rebels and government forces,

Alessandra de Rossi effectively played her role as Manny’s mother, Dionisia. Cesar Montano and Alex Medina (Manny’s father Rosalio) likewise both did their part well. But, most of the memorable scenes were brought by Buboy Villar’s powerful performance. Director Paul Soriano made full use of the young actor’s talent that showcased his ability to portray Manny’s undying love affair with his chosen sport.

2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost

The all new redesigned 2015 Ford Mustang Ecoboost is an absolutely stunning

vehicle to drive in the winter. Too bad winter is over!

Thank you Ford! Finally, a sports car with studded winter tires! In the past, manufacturers would just bring cars to Winnipeg in the winter and most of the time, keep the factory all-season tires on the vehicle. When you are used to driving a vehicle with winter tires, having a set of performance studded winter tires on a Mustang was a blessing. This would be the perfect winter car for our harsh prairie winters.

The 2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost came equipped with Nokian Hakkapelliita 8 studded winter tires. This was my first time driving a sports car with studded tires. I've been a huge proponent of winter tires but with the rear wheel drive and 310hp under the hood, the studded tires were such a joy to drive with in the winter. better performance and handling on the snow covered streets of Winnipeg.

The Ford Mustang EcoBoost was equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission and made driving so much more fun. Did I mention rear wheel drive? Yes, rear wheel drive and turning off traction control features brought a little more excitement to running errands around the city and backroads in the country. Under the hood sits a turbocharged 2.3L 4cylinder Ecoboost engine and pumps out 310 horsepower and 320 ft.lbs. of torque.

The Ford Mustang EcoBoost came in bright Race Red finish and against the backdrop of cloudless blue prairie sky and white snow, the car was beautiful to look at. The aggressive front end with sharp body lines that carry along the side of the Mustang are gorgeous. The raised creases on the hood give the impression that there’s a beast of an engine sitting inside. The elegantly styled front headlights also accentuate the Mustang’s aggressive front look.

Optional equipment that came with the 2015 Ford Mustang Ecoboost I4 Coupe included

EcoBoost Performance package, Recaro cloth seats and security package. Base sticker price was listed at $27,999. Total options was $5,800 and total price as tested was $33,799.

Election: The Art of Selecting

Discover who and what those candidates are going to do prior to selecting

your candidate and voting. Will they be Progressively Conserving, Liberating, Democratizing, or just Charismatically Attracting? Do not vote for the sake of voting or exercising the right of suffrage. Be fully aware that your vote should not be bought.

Below are the summarized promising advocacies from several Political Parties’ Programs that would partly help you decide who to vote during the May 5, 2015 Provincial Election for the position of the (MLA) Members of the Legislative Assembly in Alberta, and ultimately your Premier.

The Progressive Conservative Party: The Prentice Plan

LeaderPeter Eric James "Jim" Prentice, PC MLA QC (born July 20, 1956) is a Canadian politician, the 16th and current Premier of Alberta. In the 2004 federal election he was elected to the Canadian House of Commons as a candidate of the Conservative Party of Canada. He was re-elected in the 2006 federal election and appointed to the cabinet as Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians. Prentice was appointed Minister of Industry on August 14, 2007, and after the 2008 election became Minister of Environment on October 30, 2008. On November 4, 2010, Prentice announced his resignation from cabinet and as MP for Calgary Centre-North. On September 6, 2014, he won the Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta leadership election. He subsequently won a by-election to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta on October 27, 2014, as the MLA for Calgary-Foothills.Alberta is at a turning point. It’s time to break the boom and bust cycle once and for all. I have laid out a plan to take immediate action and secure Alberta’s future. Not everything in it will be popular – but the actions are necessary for a strong economy and a lasting legacy for our children and grandchildren. Our plan will:• Cut government waste and focus dollars on the front lines• Invest in schools, hospitals and roads• Protect Alberta jobs

• Use new revenue to break the boom and bust cycle• Diversify the economy across all sectors• Double our savings in the Heritage FundBy doing this we will build a better future for all Albertans. We can be confident in our future. We live in a province full of potential. We have an educated and skilled work force. We have resources Canada and the world needs. And we take care of each other. On May 5, let’s choose Alberta’s future.

The Alberta Liberal Party: Its Ideology and Advocacy

The Alberta Liberal Party has a long heritage of adhering to liberalism, in both the classical sense and in terms of modern Liberalism (see social liberalism). The party is a centrist party that is focused on creating the conditions for a strong economy, social progressiveness, and safeguarding the environment.

LeaderDavid Richard Swann, MLA (born June 19, 1949) is a medical doctor and Alberta Liberal Member of the Legislative Assembly for Calgary Mountain View. He was the leader of the Alberta Liberal Party and Leader of the Opposition in the Alberta Legislature from December 2008 until resigning as party leader in September 2011. He returned as interim leader of the Alberta Liberal Party on February 1, 2015, following the resignation of Raj Sherman.

Leading policies:Economic policy:• Reduce Post-Secondary tuition by a third, eliminate mandatory non-instructional fees, and move to a grant-based system versus student loans for financial aid • Implement progressive taxation • Opening government contracts to a bidding process that is accessible to the public with disclosure of all government contracts over $10,000• Investing in a High Speed Rail and other infrastructure connecting Edmonton, Red Deer, and CalgarySocial policy:• Investing in community, school-based hubs across Alberta that tie the health, educational, and social needs of communities • Eliminate subsidies to private schools and roll some schools into the public systems• Not providing resources to enforce cannabis laws in cases of small amounts of possession• Sustainable and substantially increased funding for Legal Aid Alberta• Implementing a $10 a day learn through play program throughout AlbertaEnvironmental policy:• Elimination of the use of coal as an energy source for electricity in Alberta• Support of the Experimental Lakes Area • Implementing a carbon

National Democratic Party: Platform and Promises

LeaderRachel Anne Notley (born April 17, 1964) is a Canadian politician and lawyer, currently a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for Edmonton-Strathcona, and leader of the Alberta New Democratic Party. Notley's legal career has focused on labour law, with a specialty in workers' compensation advocacy and workplace health and safety issues. Notley was elected MLA for Edmonton-Strathcona in the 2008 provincial election, succeeding former NDP leader Raj Pannu. On October 18, 2014, Notley won the Alberta New Democrat leadership election on the first ballot with a "commanding" 70% of the vote.

Rachel Notley released the Alberta NDP’s 2015 election platform, saying Albertans now have a clear choice before them.

Notley promotes value-added, fair resource royalties

Days before the election, Rachel Notley introduced a Private Members’ Bill to promote full and fair resource royalties in Alberta and encourage the creation of sustainable jobs by upgrading natural resources in the province.

Wildrose Party: Vying for an Election Reform - Fixed Election The Wildrose Party (legally Wildrose Political Association, formerly the Wildrose Alliance Political Association) is a conservative provincial political party in Alberta, Canada. The party was formed out of the Alberta Alliance Party in early 2008 following its merger with the unregistered Wildrose Party of Alberta.

LeaderBrian M. Jean (born February 3, 1963) is a lawyer and Canadian politician who represented the riding of Fort McMurray—Athabasca in the House of Commons from 2006 to 2014 and Athabasca from 2004 to 2006.

On February 25, 2015 he returned to political life to enter provincial politics by declaring his candidacy for the leadership of

the Wildrose Party. He was elected party leader on March 28, 2015.

Policy and identityElection reform is a focus of

the Wildrose Alliance. The party proposes to set fixed election dates rather than the current format which allows the Premier to call an election at any time. It would allow more free votes in the legislature and would seek to elect the province's Senators rather than have them appointed by the Prime Minister. The party also plans to introduce a bill giving voters the right to recall their MLA.

The Wildrose Party proposes numerous changes to how the province delivers health care, which it claims will remain compliant with the Canada Health Act, as well as controls on government spending.Smith is also critical of international climate change treaties, believing climate change science remains inconclusive.

Danielle Smith identifies herself as a fiscal conservative. While she considers herself a libertarian on social issues, the party is home to many social conservatives. Smith stated that controversial social issues would not play a part in the party's election platform.

Polling indicated that the party retained the support of a quarter of the electorate throughout 2010

as the party further attempted to define itself as not just a protest party but a party capable of forming government. By July 2011, the Wildrose's support had fallen to 16 percent, while PC support had risen to 51 percent. However, by March 2012, the Wildrose was polling the support of four-in-ten Albertans, showing significant improvement and a credible challenger to the PCs.

With the partial presentation of the the aforementioned, you would surely be able to identify which Political Party best suits to address the current socio-political issues in our province. The writer opted to gather these information from the websites and intended to have them published to the one of the most vernacular Fililipino-Canadian Newspaper circulating in Alberta Province—the Alberta Filipino Journal. For the reason that, not everybody is technologically inclined in order to browse information from the internet.

Choose for the best candidate who would radically imply the real meaning of the acronym MLA, i.e., Member of the Legislative Assembly, rather than the one who would bear a filipino connotation of MLA, i.e., Mangangako Lang Ako (I will just make promises).

Fil-Cans excited for Jollibee opening in Canada!Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC) is eyeing its first branch in Canada as part of its goal to put up 220 in the Philippines and 110 abroad, or a total of 330 new branches this year.

According to Jollibee chief finance officer Ysmael Baysa at the sidelines of Euromoney Investment Forum on Tuesday, March 24, the company is looking at Toronto as the site for its first store in Ontario, Canada.

Jose Minana, group president for Jollibee Foods Corporation, also said its Toronto debut is long overdue adding that the company should have entered Canada way before.

Canada counts a large Filipino community according to the 2011 National Household Survey. There are more than 660,000 Filipinos in

the country, with almost 250,000 located in the GTA, making Toronto home to the country’s largest Filipino population, followed by Vancouver and Winnipeg.

Food experts also welcome the entry of Jollibee in Canada. Garth Whyte, president of the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association, says Filipino food is one of the up-and-coming cuisines in Canada. Kelly Weikel, a food-trend expert for Chicago consulting firm Technomic, Inc., agrees now is the right time for Jollibee to come to Canada.

The Filipino fast-food giant operates the largest food network in the Philippines, with 2,301 stores as of end-2014. The company also owns Chowking, Greenwich, Red Ribbon, Mang Inasal, and Burger King.

If it seems like you've done nothing but go around with urgency, this week brings the chance to catch your breath. After all the excitement, pause and assess your progress. You'll also need to think about money and other resources, such as talents, information, and anything else necessary to get ahead and how you might make use them.

It's time to turn inspiration into practice – take that bright idea and run with it. But there's no rush. Allow whatever you have in mind to grow organically and you won't go far wrong. Don't force anything, but do take advantage of a wave of enthusiasm.

Have you been finding it hard to get through to someone? If so, this issue could come when the person in question may seem at their most stubborn. Don't ask for any favors at this time, whoever it is, as you might receive contrition. The weekend is great for movies, fun, and chilling out in general.

Delays in receiving cash and other forms of abundance should soon come to an end. Those seeds you planted a while ago will begin to grow, bringing the potential for greater income for you. You can also increase your chances of attracting golden opportunities by networking regularly, whether you're looking for new friends or something more romantic.

There's plenty of potential for fun and drama in your life, particularly if you're willing to move outside your comfort zone. There's also a push to succeed in your career, which you can benefit from by slowing down and considering what you really want.

The urgency around money matters may die down this week, leaving you feeling less anxious yet even more motivated to increase your earning potential. Upgrade your skill set by taking a course or class. If you're driven to increase your knowledge, this is the time to go for it. Be confident enough to move in the direction of your dreams, as an optimistic influence pushes you to move outside your comfort zone.

If you're eager to get your money working harder for you, the current alignment suggests that putting in the effort now can bring good returns further down the line. You can do even better if you're willing to ask for advice from someone with experience. Bring an opportunity to take a relationship to a new level.

You'll find your interactions have a soothing, beneficial effect on you. Even if you can't agree on something, the earthy qualities of energies can act as a potion to your soul. If your intense feelings have complicated matters, you'll find the common sense solutions that show up to be a revelation.

You could be feeling out in the cold early this week. But because the aspect is temporary, things between you and other matters can quickly improve. It pays to nourish your mind and body by getting enough sleep, eating the right foods, and exercising regularly. If you've been busy, think about indulging a day in the spa.

If you're in the dating loop, you'll have the most luck when you seek out others who share your love of the good things in life - people who enjoy gourmet food, excel at business, and love the same cultural activities. It can be a catalyst for change on the home front. If you have a plan, that's the day to put it into action.

There's a good chance your sweetheart has issues that have nothing to do with you. As it's only temporary, you'll soon be back on good terms. You may be eager to sort out home-based projects. Saturday could be your best bet, as a potent transit delivers the energy and enthusiasm to get things off to a great start.

It’s technically a great time to entertain at home and make family and friends feel welcome. The only exception to this could be on a Tuesday, when an unsettled connection could throw a monkey wrench in the works. It's also an excellent time for a date with a romantic theme. If you want to impress or give your sweetheart special treat, this is the time to go for it.

Affordable Supportive Living Initiative (ASLI) grants will help build up

to 2,612 supportive living spaces, higher than the original projections of 1,500.

“We have made significant investments in safe, affordable and quality housing to meet the diverse needs of Alberta seniors. We’ve exceeded our original target by working with dedicated community partners to find new ways to deliver more spaces.”- Jeff Johnson, Minister of Seniors

Of the more than 2,600 new spaces, almost 400 will be allocated

The Calgary Police Service and Alberta Health Services (AHS) have teamed up to

raise awareness around a street drug causing concern for police and medical officials.

Fentanyl, a lethal synthetic opioid analgesic, is approximately 100 times more toxic than morphine. Although it is not a new drug, it has gained prevalence on Calgary streets over the last few years.

In 2014 there were 36 seizures of fentanyl within Calgary. The largest contained 9,600 pills suspected to be OxyContin, and later identified as fentanyl through laboratory testing.

Between January and March 10, 2015, there have been 13 fentanyl seizures within Calgary. The largest incident occurred on Feb. 2, 2015, with a seizure of 11,597 pills.

ASLI grants support developments that combine housing and medical care as provided through a Master Services Agreement with Alberta Health Services (AHS). Proponents will work with Seniors and AHS to secure the necessary operating funding to support seniors served in these projects.

Supportive living provides accommodation in a home-like setting where residents remain as independent as possible with access to services and care that meet their changing needs. Residents have their own private rooms and access to meals, housekeeping, recreational activities, and 24-7 professional nursing care, depending on their needs.

The Alberta government has invested more than $600 million in supportive living since it began funding capital grant programs in 1999. Since then, Alberta has funded more than 8,000 new supportive living spaces.

Due to recent dry and windy weather conditions, the Calgary Fire Department is

placing a fire safety advisory in effect for Calgary. This fire safety advisory is to remind citizens to be cautious when using outdoor open flames and disposing of smoking materials.

“The weather forecast is showing continued dry and windy weather with little precipitation predicted for Calgary, so there is a higher risk of fire,” said Ed Kujat, fire marshal with the Calgary Fire Department. “Dry conditions increase the risk for fires to ignite, while windy weather increases the chance and speed for any fire to spread. We ask that everyone be vigilant when

Calgary Fire Department issues fire safety advisory in response to dry, windy weather

disposing of smoking materials and when using outdoor flames.”

With two recent grass fires at Nose Hill Park and several local Alberta municipalities implementing fire bans and advisories due to similar weather conditions, the Calgary Fire Department continues to watch weather forecasts to ensure Calgary is prepared for any changes to the fire risk.

“It is starting to feel like spring and so more people may consider barbequing or using their fire pits, so we ask everyone to be very careful and alert,” added Kujat.

Calgarians are asked to be cautious in the city’s large natural growth parks and green spaces

for long-term care. Also included are the 311 restorative care spaces for Edmonton and Calgary, announced March 11.

In Calgary, 1305 spaces will become available including 74 beds at Silverado Seniors Village located in Northeast Calgary in Pineridge. Hon. Manmeet S. Bhullar was on hand for the Silverado Seniors Village announcement, which took place on March 13, 2015.

Government will direct $180 million toward 31 projects in 18 communities. ASLI grants cover up to 50 per cent of the capital cost for the new spaces. Grant recipients

as the new form of OxyContin. Any pharmaceutical prescribed by a doctor can be taken safely when following recommended dosages and under the supervision of a physician. However, drugs obtained on the street, including fentanyl, are never safe.

“Fentanyl is not a new drug of abuse. What we are seeing is the tragic reality of street drugs,” says Dr. Mark Yarema, Medical Director of Alberta’s Poison and Drug Information Service (PADIS) and Emergency Medicine Physician. “Simply put, there is no such thing as a safe street drug; there is no safe dose; and, no one is immune to the risk.”

In a number of recent fentanyl cases, the patients have had many other drugs in their blood as well, including medicine used on animals

by veterinarians during castration procedures.

“No matter what you think you’re buying, when it comes to street drugs, you really don’t ever know what you’re getting,” says Yarema.

Street level fentanyl is also known as green beans, beans, green apples, apples, shady eighties, eighties, fake oxy or greenies.

Early signs of fentanyl poisoning may include severe sleepiness; trouble breathing (may sound like labored snoring), slow, shallow breathing; cold, clammy skin, and an unresponsiveness to pain. People using fentanyl can easily die as a result.

In Calgary in 2013, there were 21 deaths where fentanyl was an attributing factor. In 2014, in the Calgary Zone of AHS, there were 29

deaths in which fentanyl was, at very least, a contributing factor.

“We continually see the rise and fall of various drug trends. Whether it’s PMMA, cocaine, methamphetamine or any opioids, the message remains the same – there is no such thing as a safe street drug,” says S/Sgt. Martin Schiavetta of the CPS Drug Unit. “If you take street drugs, there is a good chance you may become seriously ill or even die.”

Anyone with information about fentanyl in Calgary is encouraged to call the CPS Drug Tip Line, at 403-428-8100, or email [email protected].

If anyone who has used or come into contact with fentanyl or any other street drug, becomes unconscious, stops breathing, experiences chest pain or has a seizure, Call 911 immediately.

Albertans can also call PADIS toll-free, 24/7, at 1-800-332-1414, for confidential consultation with staff trained in the assessment and management of exposures to drugs, including fentanyl. If you are concerned about your own drug or alcohol use, the drug and/or alcohol use of a friend or loved one, or would simply like more information on drug and alcohol use, contact the Addiction & Mental Health 24 Hour Helpline at 1-866-332-2322.

St. Petersburg, Russia,a "Living Museum"

On the Gulf of Finland in northern Russia is Saint Petersburg, the former

capital and cultural centre of the Russian Empire founded by Tsar Peter the Great in 1703. Originally named after St. Peter, Saint Petersburg had also two other names in the past: Petrograd (literally the "city of Peter") and Leningrad (named after the death of Lenin).

We experience the best of St. Petersburg, a city dedicated to art and culture, on a guided two-day land and canal cruise tour taking in many of the famous historical sites including the city's birthplace at Peter and Paul Fortress, the Church

of the Resurrection on the Spilled Blood, the Winter Palace and the Hermitage, St. Isaac's Cathedral, and the Nevskiy Prospekt.

St. Petersburg is dominated by the baroque Winter Palace built as the winter residence of Tsarina Elizabeth and for use by the imperial family during the winter. Its main highlights are the Small Throne Room, the Malachite Room and the Jordan Staircase. In 1764 the Hermitage was added by Tsarina Catherine the Great to house her vast art collection and since 1852 the Hermitage has been declared as a public museum. Today the Hermitage collection consists of about three million

exhibits second in size to the Louvre's of Paris making it one of the world's largest.

SS Peter and Paul Fortress, originally built in wood and then replaced in stone, is considered as the nucleus of St. Petersburg. We are told that during the construction of this fortification situated at the Neva River delta hundreds of forced labourers died on the job. The fortress was later used to guard and torture political prisoners.

The city is also famous for its beautiful churches notably Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral, St. Isaac's Cathedral and the Church on the Spilled Blood (Church of Resurrection).

We admired most the "Church on the Spilled Blood", both a historical monument and an outstanding work of art. The church was built on the spot where Tsar Alexander II was assassinated in 1881 by a revolutionary group. Inside the church is a special chapel that marks the site of the murder. You won't see any single painting in the church interior. Instead the walls are entirely covered with colourful mosaics. On the exterior the multi-coloured domes are

largely decorated with mosaic coat of arms that represent the towns, regions and provinces of the Russian Empire. The copulas are covered with bright enamels and hipped roofs with coloured tiles. It's an amazing sight especially from a distance!

St. Isaac's Cathedral with its dome covered with 100 kg. of gold is the fourth largest doomed cathedral on the globe after St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Originally intended to be the greatest church in the Russian

realm it's now officially a museum filled with 19th century art.

The commercial and financial centre of St. Petersburg is the Nevskiy Prospekt , the main street of the metropolis as straight as an arrow. It is also considered as the most famous street in all of Russia.

There's still so much to tell about St. Petersburg. Stay tuned!!!!

Trivia: Saint Petersburg has one of the deepest metros in the world - on average the stations are situated 60-70 meters beneath

Prentice's cuts for low-income diabetics must be reversed

As the PC government makes announcements to Albertans about the

great things they will do, they have quietly targeted 16,000 low-income diabetic Albertans, who as of June 30th will be left without coverage for medical supplies. Under the Alberta Monitoring for Health Program, the government provided close to $4.5 million each year to help low-income diabetics buy supplies such as test strips to test their blood sugar.

"Once again the government is making short-sighted cuts to save money in the budget at the expense of long-term health prevention and planning,"

indicates Sandra Azocar, Executive Director Friends of Medicare.

For those among the 4,000 Albertans who use insulin and are currently receiving support, support may be available from other programs. However, those who are part of the 12,000 Albertans who are trying to manage their diabetes and are on a fixed income, the reality may be very different.

"The government must reverse these cuts to ensure all Albertans have access to the resources they need to stay healthy," says Azocar.
