1840An Acount of my mishion toNewcastle upon tyneNovember the 6th, I startedfrom home about 9 in themorning for liverpoolI sang one verse of a farewellhymn standing upon myfeet in the house an itcaused mee to feel soryat my departure fromhome I took leave of mymother and sisters Janeand mary alise and BrotherNathan then went roundto see some of the brethrenand sisters In that branchof the church I then movedon and met with myfather and brother Jamesgoing to the cenell with stone

Sound sleep wee went tobed and I slept verywell all night November 12I rose from the bed refreshedwe went to a friend bythe name of Robert Kenedyin Carlisle and got breakfastwith him him and hiswif was very kind untous and told us if wee evercame that way wee must beesure to call there we thentook leave of them andwalked about 9 miles toBrampton where there wassa branch of the church wewent to Sister Fawkes andLodged there while we stayedwe had not been many minutIn before they set meat before u[-]

And we did eat we had here agood bed to lie upon and I feltto rejoice for they intreatedus very kindly while we stayedat night we had a meeting in theirmeeting house Brother Fieldingcalled upon me to speak to themso I spok a while the saints wassglad to see us and to hear ourvoices we went over to one ofthe friends houses which had2 sons and 1 dauter In thechurch we had not been Inmany minutes before 2 or 3of the brethren came in andasked me for my boots for theyallready seen that they wantedrepairing without me eversaying a word about themso they took them and mended them

We was very kindly intreatedwhile we stayed there for therewass one here and anotherthere asking us to come andeat with them on the Sabathday we met together again andhad very good meetings wevisited the brethren and sisterson the monday and BrotherFielding baptized the manthat had 2 sons and 1 dauterin the church his Name wasNixon November 17th we wentand visited the brethren andSisters and sister Jane Fawkesgave me a pocket hankerchiefand the brethren dealedvery kindly with one andabout 1 oclock in the afternoonwe took leave of them

and some of the brethrenwent with us 2 or 3 mileswe then walked 13 miles toburnstones and stoped whileBrother Fielding preached3 of the Atston brethrenmet us there we got somerefresment and then walked6 miles to Alston and landedabout 12 o clock P M at BrotherJohn Sanders I found myselfhere to be at home; the nightafter wee went to their meetingand they rejoiced to see ourfaces we visited the brethrenand sisters and found thatthey had a spirit of unityon the 21 of November we had a meetingat Brother Sanders with the brethrenand sisters and they spake intongues and I felt a desire

To have the gift of tongues andthe interpretation and thespirit of profesy myselfon the 22 of November it beingSabath I felt in the morningto fast and pray so accordinglyI went upside of the rivertyne by myself and prayedthen I came back and wentto the meeting and at noonI stil felt to fast and prayso I went acros the fieldsto to pray by myself untothe lord that I might havethose gifts before I went awayfrom Alston if it was pleasingin is sight and not elce lestI should make an improperuse of them I prayed in cecretvery much then I came backto the church meeting

and we had a very profitable time3 of them spoke in tonguesafter preaching at night wehad a meting with the saintsat Brother Sanders and aprofitable time we had someof them spake in tongues andthe interpretation was givensister Betty Spotswood spoke intongues and when it was interpretedsome of it was concerning me thatif I would stand on my feet andgive way to the spirit and let mytongue go that the gift I shouldhave so I stood upon my feetand did not give way but beganspeaking in my own motherlanguage so by that means I didnot get it at that time; on the 23of November betwixt 1 and 2 oclockin the afternoon on th monday

Brother John Sanders an me wastogether in is house talkingabout the gift of tongues andbefore this sister Isabel on belhad told me that she believedthat I should have the giftof tongues before I went awayfrom alston; Brother Sandersa while we was together spokein tongues and said if I wouldstand upon my feet and besimple and humble an giveway to the spirit I shouldthen speak I could not excercisefaith enough at that time so hespok again in tongues and saidnearly the same and thatif I would stand upon myfeet I should have it so Istood upon my feet an the lordgave me is spirit and I spak

Walked 7 miles to plenmelerand stoped all night at sisterEliots on the 27 of Novemberwe walked 16 miles to Exchamthen took the train 20 milesto Newcastle upon tyne andlanded about 4 oclock in theafternoon we then walkedup to Brother Thomas LambertsHarthum Hill and lodged thenon the 29 it being Sabath wehad a meeting in the forenoonIn a sellar at Brother DicksonsI spoke to them for one on th30 of November we had a meetingagain in the celar I openedthe meeting and Brother Fieldingspoke December 2 we had ameeting again on purposefor the saints as a prayermeeting in the celar again

Dec. 5 betwixt 9 and 10 P MWe went to the river tyneand Brother Fielding baptized2 women and 2 men we thencam back and held a councilfor the next day It wasscaried by vote that I wassto go out to west More whichis beter than 5 miles to preachin the morning and brotherLambert to accompany meand I wass to take the leadin the morning Dec 5 wewent and I preached out ofdoors in th open air at theconclusion there was a mancame and opposed me and heAsked me if there wasspeople to cry out here whatmust they do to be savedwhat should I say to them

We had a meeting in the celarwith the brethren and sistersas a prayer meeting again; thenight after Brother Fieldingpreached in the celar againSaturday night December 12thwe held council it wasscaried by vote that I wassto go to west more againthe morning after and BrotherBateman to accompany meWe went and I opened themeeting by singingand praye[-]in the open air againthen Brother Bateman spokea few words and then Ipreached about an hourIn my discource therewass a man began tointrupt me in my dicource

I Asked him to let me beuntil I had gone through withand then I would answerhim if he had a mind buthe stil spoke again and therewas a stander by caled himby name and said that itwass bad behaviour to intrupme in my dicource so hesaid no more to me I thenshowed them the plan ofthe gospel of Jesus christand many of them smiledI told them that whensiners asked the apostlewhat they might do to besaved they did not only tellthem to come and kneeldown at the penitent formand we will pray for youand you shall be saved
