WELCOME TO CENTERBUILD On behalf of ICSC and the Program Planning Committee, welcome to the 2013 CenterBuild Conference. CenterBuild brings together professionals from all around the world. The conference offers numerous opportunities to discover more about the retail industry and create lifelong connections. In other words, it’s all about learning and connecting. CenterBuild is a one-of-a-kind experience because it provides you with the opportunity to connect and learn with like-minded design, development and construction professionals in the retail industry. We believe you will find this year’s program meets these expectations. Many of you are arriving early to take advantage of our combined agenda with the ICSC RetailGreen Conference. Tuesday will provide an opportunity for sports-based and Green Tie connecting, or you can learn from the Retail Green sessions that afternoon. Wednesday will be a day of combined sessions beginning with concurrent workshops in the morning followed by a networking lunch in the RetailGreen Trade Expo. Your overall experience at CenterBuild this week will provide you with excellent learning and connecting opportunities. Our dynamic general sessions include our keynote speaker, Jason Jennings, author of “The Reinventors” on Wednesday. Thursday’s session features a great panel discussion focused on public space design as an element of your projects and the related issues. Learning is a key element of CenterBuild. Make sure you take full advantage of the more than 200 Roundtable topics. Our Case Studies and Workshops have an expanded focus this year. The presentations feature projects and work issues related to design and construction beyond our borders. Make sure you bring your smartphone to the sessions this year. Many sessions will offer electronic polling as a way to make the sessions more interactive. Technology and Social Media are also highlighted this year with several workshops featuring LinkedIn and the use of Apps to make you more efficient. Nearly all of the sessions offered at CenterBuild have been approved for continuing education credits. Make sure you track your credits with our reporting paperwork which is available at the registration area. Your completed paperwork must be turned in prior to the end of the conference in order for you to receive proper credit. Finally, we all connect at CenterBuild. Those connections may happen at one of our outstanding receptions, interactive sessions, games of golf or our annual CDP (Certified Development, Design and Construction Professional) dinner Wednesday evening. J) Brand and Media in Retail Environments Grand Canyon 11-13 With mobile retailing, social commerce and smartphone technology changing the shopping transaction, malls need to incorporate more technology to remain relevant. They also need to project a unique brand and identity that resonates with shoppers in their community in order to distinguish themselves from competing centers. Today’s retail centers are seen increasingly as the social spaces of their communities, that “third place” beyond home and work. Media and Brand are critical components in choreographing the visitor experience in these new parks, plazas and center courts, integrating technology to make them content and information-rich Town Squares. The panel will focus on practical issues of media integration into retail design and construction, as well as content and customer interaction programming that transforms the shopping experience. JoS. A. Bank Charles Bank came to Baltimore, Maryland from Lithuania in 1866 and opened a small tailor shop in the city. By the turn of the century, he had branched out into the manufacturing of pants and his grandson, Joseph A. Bank, joined his small company in 1898 as a cloth cutter. As sales grew, many customers wrote to the Company to request clothing swatches and to order merchandise. We developed a list of several hundred names and sent them a mimeographed model description and price list along with the swatches. Our first bound catalog was an 8-page brochure with drawings of merchandise along with 64 cloth swatches, and mailed to approximately 10,000 customers. In early 1960’s, we opened six store locations and by 1981, there were 11 retail stores and a consistently growing catalog business that lead to 25 more in the next ten years. In the spring of 1994, JoS. A. Bank Clothiers became a publicly owned company, trading its stock through the NASDAQ Stock Exchange and opened 12 new full line stores across the country. In the late 1990's the Company had about 100 stores. In 1999 a new management team was formed. Under this new team a decision was made to increase the number of stores and develop the Internet business. Starting in March 2001 a new store design was unveiled in Charlottesville, Virginia. Since that time the Company has opened over 530 new stores to bring us to well over 630 locations. The retail store growth has been designed to provide our customers a convenient location for shopping either near where they live or work. As we go forward, we continue to adopt new business concepts such as tuxedo rental, big and tall sizes and new factory stores which will provide career opportunities for our Associates. Jos. A.
