Preconfigured Lateral Files & Multimedia Storage Cabinets General Information

GENERAL INFORMATION

BSI lateral files are designed on a 11/2"module to provide an unparalleled degree ofinternal flexibility. Interior components areavailable 3", 6", 71/2",9", 101/2", 12", 131/2"and 15" high. These compo nents are designedto efficiently accom modate virtually any filingand storage requirement.

To assure BSI files are compatible withpanel systems, desks or custom architecturaldetails, Cabinets are available in 40 differentheights.

Preconfigured UnitsTo simplify the specification process, BSIoffers preconfigured files and storageCabinets in the most popular sizes with themost popular internal components. Theseunits are assembled using standardcomponents. Lateral files and storageCabinets can be field-retrofitted and updatedby specifying componentry from the Custom-Built section of this price list.

HeightLateral files and storage Cabinets are availablein 40 standard heights. Heights include 1/8"allowance for leveling glides fully recessed.

DepthAll lateral files and storage Cabinets are 18"deep.

WidthLateral files and storage Cabinets are availablein three standard widths: 30", 36" and 42".

Drawer DimensionsRefer to the illustrations on page 3 for therange of drawer sizes and the height clearanceof each.

CONSTRUCTION AND STANDARD FEATURESBasic ShellShell common to lateral file and storagecabinet units. Uprights punched to acceptinterior components on 11/2" centers. Uprightsand top and bottom reinforcements arewelded into rigid “boxframe.” Constructed of18- and 20-gauge steel. Seamless back andtop with reinforced corners.

Illustrated shell heights include 1/8" foradjustable glide in recessed position.

Doors/DrawersDrawer fronts, 20-gauge steel with full-widthflush inset pull and label holder. Fronts arescrew-mounted to roll-out shelves to builddrawers. Roll-out shelf body, 20-gauge steelslotted on 11/2" centers to accept dividers.Leading edge formed to provide pull; centersection offset for additional strength. Shelfends, 18-gauge steel, notched to accepthanging folder bars. Each roll-out shelfequipped with two heavy-duty, three-section,ball-bearing suspensions.

Components have been tested to acceptloads of 125 lbs. This exceeds ANSI/BIFMAX5.2-1989 standards for lateral files whenrecommended counterbalance weight isinstalled.

Hinged door, 20-gauge steel, double-wallconstruction. Door swing is limited to 95° toprevent contact with adjacent cabinet and fullheight vertical flush inset pull.

ShelvesBlank shelf, 22-gauge steel, formed 1" thick onfront and back edges. End Tab Shelf, 22-

gauge steel shelf and back, 20-gauge sides.Shelf offset along width to increase strength.Slotted on 1" increments to accept platedividers.

Preconfigured lateral files meet or exceedANSI/BIFMA X5.2-1989 standards.

Receding Door20-gauge steel with full-width flush inset pulland label holder. Equipped with soundabsorber. Doors have guiding mechanismfitted with nylon glides to prevent metal-to-metal contact and ensure effortless operation.

The diagrams on the following page identifyvarious shelf and drawer combinations andrelated height clearances behind a recedingdoor. The diagrams illustrate typical use.Additional interior options can be installedbehind a receding door.

Note: Dimensions have been taken from thefront raised edge of the roll-out shelf .

AccessoriesPlate dividers, 18-gauge steel, notched to lockinto shelf.

Folder bars, 30" & 36" (14-gauge steel); 42"(12-gauge steel), offset to maximize strength.

Suspended binder frames are constructed of14- to 18-gauge steel. Screw-mounted tocabinet. Can be used behind 131/2" and 15"receding doors and hinged storage cabinetdoors.

Adjustable GlidesLateral files and storage Cabinets are suppliedwith four adjustable glides. The glides can beadjusted from inside the cabinet using a 1¼"hex socket wrench, or from outside thecabinet using a 7/8" wrench. Standard glidesprovide 3/4" adjustment; longer glides are alsoavailable. Overall cabinet heights include theglide in its recessed position.

InterlockAll Cabinets are equipped with an interlocksafety mechanism. This mechanism reducesthe possibility of cabinet tip over by permittingonly one drawer to be opened at a time. Withsome unique combinations an individualdrawer may not be controlled by the interlock.In these instances a caution label will beaffixed to the drawer body.

LocksLocks are standard on all units. The lock is ahigh-security double-bit type. The double-bitlock offers superior security when comparedto a single-bit lock. Units are standard withrandom keys in a range of 200 differentnumbers. Specific keying combinations areavailable at no additional charge. Thisinformation must be included with the order.Locks can be master keyed.

Standard Paint FinishesAll BSI products are chemically etched prior topainting. This process enhances top coatbonding. The top coat is a high solidsmodified 40 sheen polyester enamel. Theenamel is baked on to provide a scratch- andstain-resistant surface.

All inside and outside shell and drawer frontsur faces are painted with the same specifiedpaint color.

Interior components and accessories areDark Tone. Mechanical components are blackchrome-plated.

Powder coated/enamel finish colors listed

here are available where specifications call forpainted surfaces.

40 Sheen powder coated/enamel finishSpecial Paint FinishesAll special colors, including othermanufacturers’ standard enamel finishes, areavailable subject to the following conditions.

1. Two steel color chips (minimum 3"x5") arerequested for color matching purposes.Paper samples are acceptable, however, areasonable tolerance must be allowedwhen comparing the two variations.

2. All nonstandard colors are available at noadditional charge (excluding hi-chromaticcolors), but may be subject to extendedlead times. Order will not be processeduntil color match is approved. Writtenconfirmation must accompany order.

3. Textured paint finishes are available at a5% upcharge. BSI has a set of standardtextured paints available at a 5% upcharge.All other nonstandard textured colorsfollow the same procedure for colormatching as listed above.

4. Special Metallic or Mica finishes mustfollow the following procedure:

All Metallic and Mica finishes are subjectto an upcharge. The upcharge will bebased on the particular color requested.

All Metallics or Micas must provide asteel color chip sample.

All Metallic or Mica finishes require a 3-week turnaround on samples and dorequire an extended lead time on theactual order.

Please be aware that metallic finishescan be inconsistent. The metal fleck cancreate patterns that are visible on largeflat surfaces.

INSTALLATIONCaution LabelsCaution- and safety-related information iscontained on a peel-off label affixed to thefront of the cabinet. This label is to beremoved by the customer.

Caution information is also permanentlyaffixed to the left side of the top drawer. Bothlabels contain important installation andloading information.

Installation InformationComplete instructions on the properinstallation and use of BSI files are provided ineach file shipped. The instructions refer tocorrect methods of leveling, ganging andloading. Counterbalance weights should beinstalled in all single freestanding files.

Field ReconfigurationAs needs change, BSI lateral files and storageCabinets can readily be field-changed;however, this process should be undertakenby a qualified service technician.

Color swatches are available online and byrequest.

The model numbering system was developed to include the nominal size of the unit orcomponent. An alphanumeric suffix is sometimes used to further define the item.

LocksLocks are standard on all units. The lock isa high-security double-bit type. Thedouble-bit lock offers superior securitywhen compared to a single-bit lock. Unitsare standard with random keys in a rangeof 200 different numbers. Specific keyingcombinations are available at no additionalcharge. This information must be includedwith the order. Locks can be masterkeyed.

Paint FinishesAll BSI products are chemically etchedprior to painting. This process enhancestop coat bonding. The top coat is a highsolids modified 40 sheen polyesterenamel. The enamel is baked on toprovide a scratch- and stain-resistantsurface.

All inside and outside shell and drawersurfaces are painted with the samespecified paint color.

Interior components and accessoriesare painted Dark Tone. Mechanicalcomponents are black chrome-plated.

Powder coated/enamel finish colorsshown in Color Card 1 in the BSI Fabrics& Finishes binder are standard and areavailable where specifications call forpainted surfaces.

Special Paint FinishesAll special colors, including othermanufacturers’ standard enamel finishes,are available subject to the followingconditions.

1. Two steel color chips (minimum 3"x5")are requested for color matchingpurposes. Paper samples areacceptable, however, a reasonabletolerance must be allowed whencomparing the two variations.

2. All nonstandard colors are available atno additional charge (excluding hi-chromatic colors) , but may be subjectto extended lead times. Order will notbe processed until color match isapproved. Written confirmation mustaccompany order.

3. Textured paint finishes are available ata 5% upcharge. BSI has a set ofstandard textured paints available at a5% upcharge. All other nonstandardtextured colors follow the sameprocedure for color matching as listedabove.


All Metallic and Mica finishes aresubject to an upcharge. Theupcharge will be based on theparticular color requested.


All Metallic or Mica finishes require a3-week turnaround on samples anddo require an extended lead time onthe actual order.

Please be aware that metallic finishescan be inconsistent. The metal fleckcan create patterns that are visible onlarge flat surfaces.

Field ReconfigurationAs needs change, BSI pedestals canreadily be field-changed; however, thisprocess should be undertaken by aqualified service technician.

Basic ShellUprights and top and bottomreinforcements are welded into rigid“boxframe.” Constructed of 18- and 20-gauge steel. Seamless back and top withreinforced corners. 5-drawer Cabinetsalso feature a welded tie bar midway inthe shell.


Doors/DrawersDrawer fronts, 20-gauge steel double wallwith full-width flush inset pull and labelholder. Fronts are screw-mounted toshelves to build drawers. Shelf body, 20-gauge steel.
