The brothers’ Vonu Pure Lager is already in Fiji’s bars and resorts, and from next month will be quenching the thirsts of premium beer drinkers in the United States. The company hopes to ride the coat- tails of Fiji Water, the water brand sipped by Barack Obama, Scarlett Johansson and Lady Gaga. “They’ve done a really good job of getting Fiji on the map so from our point of view we were looking for something that might be a product opportunity to take another product from Fiji,” says Jeremy Ullrich. Deals signed with big American distributors, the key to unlocking the lucrative US market, will see Vonu available in bars and supermarkets in Hawaii and California before the end of the year. The Ullrich brothers say the plan is to prove the brand in those markets before scaling up with a $30 million investment partnership with a big beverage company. New Zealand drinkers will have to travel to Fiji to sample Vonu Pure, which is unlikely to be available in New Zealand for another year. Jeremy Ullrich says the past three years have been challenging but worth it. “In reality, if it was easy to do in Fiji 10 other people would have done it. It is a natural barrier to entry and I think that is what excited us as well,” he said. While the pair has a background in manufacturing, their grandfather founded Hurricane Wire Products and their father, Peter, was behind PEL Industries, an electric fencing company neither knew anything about brewing. Brewing trends The Ullrich brothers were attracted by trends in the New Zealand beverage industry. They also admit it’s every Kiwi guy’s dream to create a beer brand. They could see potential in using some New Zealand knowledge and talent in the production, packaging and marketing areas. Bail For Asian National On Murder Charge

One of the six Asian nationals accused of murdering a fellow countryman outside a Suva nightclub in April this year has been granted bail for medical reasons.Hu Jian Zhan’s medical report was submitted to Justice Salesi Temo when he appeared with five others - Yang Xiu Qi, Bill Hao, Liu Chuan Wei, Veng Seong Tam and Dai Jian – at the High Court in Suva. The six men had been remanded in custody since April without bail.Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) lawyer Pita Bulimainavalu told the Court that investigations still continue and that substantive measures are being taken as far as disclosures are concerned.Bulimainavalu said they are also

awaiting the final post-mortem report and coloured photographs from the scene of the crime. Two of the accused have already confessed to the murder but no judgement has been made yet. DPP lawyer has also requested written confession from the two.The state requires accomplished statements by defense, Bulimainavalu said.Meanwhile, defense lawyer for Zhan who was granted bail, Samanunu Vaniqi requested Justice Temo if she could present one of her key witnesses via Skype-link since the person had returned to China. The first verdict of the hearing will be made on February 8, 2013.

No Visitation For PrisonersThe unit where the five recaptured escapees are being admitted at Suva’s CWM Hospital remains in lockdown with authorities ruling out visitors.Police head of operation ACP Rusiate Tudravu said not even family members are allowed to visit the five who he says are still recovering.Tudravu said the doctors in charge have not given the green light for visitation.“Another reason is that the escapees have not being interviewed and any visitation may interfere with the process,” he said.

He said their first priority is the health of the escapees.Meanwhile, permanent secretary for Information Sharon Smith-Johns said there is no update as yet to an investigation the Fiji Govt launched into the alleged use of excessive force in the recapture of the five prisoners.Smith-Johns said such incidents are unfortunate and unacceptable and in a statement said that “the Fijian Government does not condone the excessive force used in the apprehension of the recaptured prisoners.”

No Special Treatment For Qarase The Fiji Prisons and Corrections Service said there is no special treatment given to any inmate, including Laisenia Qarase. Spokesperson, Ana Tamani said the authority has replied to Qarase's lawyer, Tupou Draunidalo stating that all inmates are treated equally. This follows a letter written by Draunidalo to the Officer in Charge at Korovou prison soon after Qarase was sent to jail early last month that the 71

year old be transferred to an infirmary, due to his age and health condition.Tamani said there are other diabetic inmates, so no one is treated differently.Qarase was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment by High Court judge Justice Priyantha Fernando last month, after he was found guilty of six counts of abuse of office and three counts of discharging his duty with respect to property in which he had a private interest.

manufacture here,” Mr Jeremy Ullrich said.He said manufacturing in Fiji was not without its trials, but once you learn to work the Fijian way, it was a friendly and helpful business environment. “I think the challenge Fiji has is more of a challenge of any developing country,” he said. “There is a lot of bureaucracy and systems that make things difficult for business and slow things down, but at the same time there seems to be a real willingness up there to really try to overcome that.”Skilled staffWhat they haven’t been short of is skilled technical and science graduates needed to staff the brewery.Although Jonathan, 35, lives permanently in Fiji and Jeremy, 39, commutes every two to three weeks, they initially thought they’d need an expert in Fiji full-time and hired someone to work there on a six-month contract.“We’ve employed some very bright, articulate, very good young people and we actually found within six or seven months we were able to localize it,” they said.Vonu Pure was launched in bars and resorts around Fiji in late 2009 but there were some worrying moments

along the way.Flood hitThe original, seemingly cheap-as-chips manufacturing site on the outskirts of Nadi was submerged under 4 meters of water and sewage in a tropical deluge.Fortunately, the search for an alternative factory on higher ground saw them chance on a building that was originally intended as a brewery before the project was abandoned.A more costly mistake occurred after the first batch of beer reached the shelves.Originally branded Taki beer (taki is a Fijian term for social drinking), the local trademark office missed paperwork showing the name was already registered to brewing giant Foster’s.With the product out on the shelves, a letter arrived from Foster’s threatening to sue.The brothers felt like packing it in but their father told them not to worry – get the labels off, dump everything, and move on.It was a costly mistake, in the region of $30,000 to $40,000, but in hindsight it resulted in them coming up with Vonu, named after the local vonu dina turtle, and a much stronger brand.“If you can overcome things like that you kind of feel you can overcome anything,” says Jeremy Ullrich.

Commission Hears Of DiscriminationStudents of Gospel School for the Deaf in Samabula want the government to provide hearing aids and give more attention to people with special needs. They raised their concerns when visited by commission member Penelope Moore.Semaema Lewenieagi, 20, after being told how they could make submissions, asked Ms Moore whether the new law would protect people with special needs.Ms Lewenieagi said for a long time they had been subjected to discrimination, particularly from people of authority such as the police.Speaking in sign language, Ms Lewenieagi said they would need more support from the government and this should be included in the constitution. She told Ms Moore all they wanted

was to be given the freedom to live and work with regular people without discrimination.Another student, Taware Burebo, 20, highlighted to Ms Moore how special needs students were deprived of participating in sporting events at secondary school level. She said they've always wanted to participate and be rewarded medals accordingly if they won an event.Ms Burebo said before they only participated in certain events but was not given medals, even if they had won at events like the Coca-Cola Games.Ms Moore responded that they would need to include their concerns in submissions to the Constitution Commission to ensure the protection of special needs people.

China-Fiji Economic Ties Emphasized For Developing

The Fijian government on Thursday highlighted the importance of developing economic ties with China, thanking China for its assistance to construct a 70 kilometer road in its Northern Division to boost the local economy.Pio Tikoduadua, permanent secretary at the Prime Minister's Office, told the media that a Chinese company is expected to construct the road stretching between Nabouwalu and Dreketi in the country's north, which would be a major boost for the local economy. The remarks followed the recent signing of a major concessional loan agreement by the Exim Bank of China and the Fiji government, involving more than 200 million Fiji dollars (about $114.3 million), said Tikoduadua. After the road construction, an international port would be the next project in the pipeline for the Northern Division, he added.Permanent Secretary of Finance

Filimoni Waqabaca echoed Tikoduadua's remarks, saying Fiji was thankful to China because the loans that they have taken were on concessional rate.He said the recent visit by China's top legislator Wu Bangguo to Fiji was indicative of the growing ties as Fiji was the only country in the South Pacific to be part of his tour that included several other countries from the other parts of the world.According to Waqabaca, Wu and Fijian Prime Minister Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama signed three economic partnerships including the loan for road construction during the visit last week.Crucially, the trip showed not only economic support for the country, but also political support for Fiji's government, Waqabaca said.Fiji is the first Pacific island country to establish diplomatic relations with China. Bilateral ties have developed smoothly since the diplomatic relations were forged in 1975.

100K Allocated For Fiji DayThe government has allocated $100,000 for this year's Fiji Day Celebrations on October 10th.Chairman of the Fiji Day oganising committee Jale Fotofili revealed this.He said programs were drawn up for the celebrations in all divisions — Labasa, Lautoka, Levuka and Rotuma — with the main celebrations in Suva.He said this year's celebration was important as Fiji celebrated another year of its independence."Despite all the challenges we face, Fiji is moving forward," Mr Fotofili said."There is light at the end of the tunnel and all Fijians should be united and celebrate as one," he added.Last year the government allocated $150,000 which also marked Fiji's 40th anniversary.

Fijian communities in Beijing, China and overseas missions will also hold similar celebrations to mark the day.Meanwhile, Dr Brij Lal, permanent secretary for Education said it was vital that students understood the importance of Fiji Day."They must be taught to take pride in their country, love for their culture, dream great things for the development of Fiji and its land and people and most importantly to be able to contribute for the betterment of Fiji," Dr Lal said.He said teachers and principals must ensure that proper arrangements are made so students could participate at the celebrations. He said remote, rural and island schools were not excluded from this nationwide celebration.

Fiji Eyes India Tourism PotentialHe made these comments while opening the India-Fiji Tourism Exchange Day at the Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort & Spa.Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said Fiji was intent on carving out a bigger presence in the Indian market with new marketing strategies based on better research of what potential visitors are seeking.“We already have significant relations between our countries, but there is vast potential to expand the flow of people between us and strengthen that relationship even further,” he said.Comparing India’s visitor arrivals to Fiji with that from Australia, New Zealand and North America, Indian visitors visiting our shores are comparatively low.Government is optimistic that towards the year 2013, the number of visitors arriving into the country from India yearly, will increase tremendously. “We are also encouraging visitors to stay longer in Fiji. We are aiming to

increase the average length of stay from the current six days to ten days by highlighting more of the extraordinary experiences Fiji has to offer,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said. With the film industry boosting the arrivals of Indians arriving into the country, Government is targeting all areas that they can strengthen in order to see an increase in numbers. “This is testimony not only to our pristine beauty, but because of the Fiji Government’s 47 per cent tax rebate for film production houses, which is attracting an increasing number of producers to these shores,” the Minister said. “This rebate is the highest offered by any country in the world.”Thirty six operators from around the country were present at the Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort & Spa marketing their products to the 35 travel agents and travel writers from India.

Cancer Society Receives Donation The Fiji Cancer Society received a cheque of $1500 from the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority (FRCA).October marks the month for cancer awareness around the world and FRCA has taken a leap to concentrate on raising awareness by its donations.FRCA executive officer Jitoko Tikolevu said the donation was a significant way of the staff’s recognising the society’s role in Fiji. The donation was raised from FRCA’s annual fun day held at the Suva Grammar grounds last Saturday.

He said: “This donation signifies our appreciation of the role of the Fiji Cancer Society plays in our society. We recognise that cancer is a growing concern in the country and is becoming an epidemic. In receiving the cheque, society president Nirmala Nambiar said the contribution spoke volumes of the FRCA’s effort towards the society.“With the cancer cases increasing from 500 annually to 1500 last year, this contribution is definitely a huge help for the Fiji Cancer Society,” she said.

Fiji Government Expresses Regret For Death Of Tourist

Fiji's Government has apologized to an Australian woman whose father died after becoming ill on a flight out of Fiji.73-year-old Thomas Seeto died in Nadi Hospital after receiving treatment on a flight bound for Sydney, which was forced to turn around when he became ill.Fiji's permanent secretary of Tourism, Elizabeth Powell, issued a written statement to Mr Seeto's daughter, Clarissa, extending the government's sympathy to the family.Ms Powell said in the statement that the government was "truly sorry" for what the family had had to go through. The statement added that the government was communicating with the people who came into contact with the Seeto family to find out exactly what happened.Ms Seeto told the media that there were a series of problems with her father's treatment, including lack of advertised medical care at the Raffles Hotel in Nadi, a long wait for the ambulance and mistakes with the autopsy and paperwork after Mr Seeto died."Honestly, it was like, it was like he had no dignity," Ms Seeto said.

Ms Seeto said that after the autopsy "I realized his forehead was not put back together properly."She also said her father's name was written incorrectly on the death certificate.Ms Seeto said when they told the Australian High Commission in Suva about her father's treatment, they were not surprised.Since returning to Australia, Ms Seeto has begun a campaign to try to get the Australian Government to alert Australian tourists visiting Fiji that they could be on their own in the case of medical problems."Fiji really boasts its tourism," Ms Seeto said."The country's making a lot of money from tourism which is mainly from Australia. What would those tourists do if they knew what that morgue looked like or what that hospital looked like?"In an emailed response Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says that "When travellers leave Australia they leave behind the support services they expect in Australia, underlining the need for comprehensive travel insurance.

China Chooses Fiji As Venue For New Geopolitical FightFiji has become a geopolitical ''football'' on Australia's doorstep, experts say, as China strengthens support for the island nation's military government.Australia urged China to work ''constructively'' with Fiji's neighbours following an unprecedented four-day visit by China's second-ranked leader, in which he pointedly defended the military government of Commodore Frank Bainimarama. The leader, Wu Bangguo, reportedly denounced what he called the bullying of strong countries over small or weak ones, according to a report by Radio New Zealand International, in what the report said was a clear swipe at Australia and New Zealand. The report said Mr Wu opposed Fiji's exclusion from the main regional body, the Pacific Islands Forum - a policy supported by Australia and New Zealand.Anne-Marie Brady, a specialist on China in the south Pacific at the University of Canterbury, said China was now actively undermining efforts by Australia, New Zealand and other Pacific nations to pressure Fiji to democratise. She said Fiji has caught up in a rapidly accelerating tussle for global influence between China

and the US.''It means Fiji is the political football in the geo-political contest between China and the US,'' she said. ''It is very much like the cold war. It's an insult to Australia and New Zealand and it's also an insult to the Pacific Islands.''Australia and New Zealand have been attempting to encourage China to abide by international norms on transparency and governance in their aid programs, to limited success.China receives strong Fijian support for its policies on Tibet and Taiwan and made Fiji an important port for satellite communication vessels.Mr Wu also handed over a $200 million concessional loan for road construction, announced 30 new scholarships for Fijian students and highlighted a 34 per cent jump in bilateral trade last year, according to official reporters.''Every country, no matter whether large or small, rich or poor, is an equal member of the international community,'' a spokesman for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, when sidestepping a question on whether Mr Wu's comments were accurately reported.A People's Daily report said Mr Wu

had defended ''the right of the Fijian people to choose its own development path and supported Fiji's right to take part in international regional affairs.''Mr Wu's visit comes just weeks after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's attended the Pacific Islands Forum at the Cook Islands, which experts say was intended to counter growing Chinese influence. Fiji has announced that it will open an embassy next month in North Korea, a gesture that North Korea is expected to reciprocate.A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade noted the number of high-level Chinese visits to Fiji and the region.''We continue to urge China to work transparently and cooperatively with Pacific governments,'' she said. Two years ago Australian officials were surprised when the Vice-President and anointed president-in-waiting, Xi Jinping, made an unannounced stopover in Fiji when travelling from Australia to Latin America.''China - unlike Australia and New Zealand - hasn't isolated us nor has it tried to intervene in political issues,'' a Fijian government spokesman said, according to the local state run media.

Baby Cards To Assist New MothersHealth centers and hospitals around the country started issuing new Maternity Child Health (MCH) card for babies. At the Vunidawa Hospital in Naitasiri, the first card was presented by divisional medical officer (DMO) central, Dr Samuela Korovou to Karalaini Waqaniu, 30, of Serea Village who gave birth to a baby girl.Vunidawa Hospital senior Sister-in-charge Senibua Waikere said Ms Waqaniu gave birth to her third child.“She is the first mum to receive her baby’s card and she was given a pink card which signifies a baby girl,” Sister Waikere said. “The new MCH cards come in two colours, blue cards for baby boys and pink cards for baby girls. The cards distribution is Fiji wide, and it is effective only for babies born from

September 17.It’s more colourful and very educational to mothers. It’s different from the old one because this new card cannot be torn, get wet or dirty.Information on the card advises mothers on what to do when the baby is sick, before taking the baby to the

hospital, and some danger symptoms seen on the babies that require hospital visits as soon as possible.Information on when to start giving baby strained food, care of the mouth and gum etc, is all in the card, and also the new immunisation schedule for vaccines for the baby.”

Diwali CautionHindus around the country who may be wary of the Diwali celebrations falling on November 18 need not to worry, the practicing priest and astrologer of the Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji Ramesh Sharma says.According to Wikipedia, the next solar eclipse is scheduled to take place on November 13-14 from 8.56am to 11.21am, with a magnitude of 1.0500, occurring only 12 hours before perigee, with greatest eclipse totality lasting just over four minutes.Hindus believe the high intensity of the beam of the eclipse will cause serious problems to them.Mr Sharma explained part of the superstitions include those eating or drinking during the eclipse could pass abnormal cells onto their offspring and food could go bad if the beam of the eclipse falls on it."Sanatan followers are aware of the various means of protection whenever there is an eclipse," he said.

"It is our advice to them to avoid making too much sweets and food, only enough to fit the family and their guests."And during the eclipse, they should cover the food with holy basal leaves."Mr Sharma said Diwali celebrations would continue but advised followers to be careful during the eclipse."The celebrations will be at night so the solar eclipse will not affect much of it because it is scheduled to occur during the day."The Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji also echoed the same sentiments from the Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, saying Diwali celebrations will go on because their followers were aware of the actions to take during an eclipse.Fiji is expected to experience a partial eclipse on November 13, with a maximum of 98 per cent of the sun obscured at 9.07am at an altitude of 42 degrees.

HFC Nets $3 MillionIt's one thing to have a good, profitable business and another to recruit the right people to get the job done.HFC Limited's recent $3 million net profit no doubt has a lot to do with its most important force in the organisation — its people. At the opening of the new HFC branch in Lautoka, company chairman Tom Ricketts paid tribute to the company's human resource area adding their vision to grow from a domestic platform to a regional and international level required a talented and energetic workforce."As we expand we will continue to recruit competent, fit and proper people with integrity and professionalism so that the excellent HFC culture will continue and remain strong," he said."It is also our intention to ensure that we will continue with appropriate training and developments so that we are able to perform competently in line with our corporate objectives."HFC will ensure that our staff is highly motivated. We will ensure that their good work is recognised and that they are adequately remunerated for the success of the company.

"In recent times, we have sent our people for overseas training and currently we are exploring further training opportunities."Highlighting their four-year strategic plan which identified six critical success factors including their people and customer focus, Mr Ricketts said they had upgraded their research and development unit. This was done on the strong belief that it was essential in formulating the company's regulatory, monetary and financial markets policies with the right products and services to achieve their strategic objectives, he said."Banking remains on the agenda of the company and we would one day like to see a local bank," he said.Meanwhile, Mr Ricketts revealed HFC progressed significantly in all dimensions of its business which included products and services, customer services, market penetration and the reach to the people. He said the organisation was improving its processes, policy environment, risk management and overall governance internally.

Fiji Fashion Week On Global TVAbout 350 million viewers could be tuning in to watch Fiji Fashion Week (FJFW) 2012 next month. This follows confirmation from international fashion and lifestyle network — Fashion One TV — that it will cover the event and promote what it has described as "the exceptional Fiji talent, style, culture and hospitality to its global fashion forward audience"."Fashion One proudly supports Fiji Fashion Week 2012, and agrees the event will produce many positive outcomes for Fiji," said a statement from Fashion One Oceania's Peter Campbell.Ashley Jordan, the head of programming for Fashion One said: "Fiji Fashion Week 2012 is an exciting event for Fashion One to broadcast. We feel honoured to support the emerging and established designers showcasing the best in fashion in Fiji and around the world.Fashion One is bringing its production signature style to Oceania events with

its massive global audience and round-the-clock programming streamed over seven satellites.Mr Campbell said: "Our satellite companies, say 350 million households across Asia, the US and Europe, have access to the Fashion One channel."Fashion One programming is only shown in high definition (HD) quality."FJFW managing director Ellen Whippy-Knight said getting Fashion One TV to cover any fashion week was challenging enough but to interest the network to come to Fiji was a huge boost."FJFW is more than just the week itself, we are committed to the long-term development of the fashion industry here and to do that, we have worked hard to make long-term partners with players in the industry," Ms Whippy-Knight said."When it comes to television for fashion, one can't get bigger than Fashion One. We are honoured that they have agreed to come to Fiji."

Abuse InquiryAn investigation will be conducted to determine whether or not excessive force was used during the arrest of the five prison escapeesPolice have confirmed their officers would be investigated if they did use excessive force.Ministry of Information permanent secretary Sharon Smith-Johns told the media that they would determine the facts of the matter before they issued a final statement."At the moment, there has been a lot of speculation that there was excessive force used," Ms Smith-Johns said."We need to investigate the circumstances whether excessive or reasonable force was used," she said.Amid those speculations was a posting on the popular social networking site facebook by Suva lawyer Rajendra Chaudhry who said "a friend just called to tell me that the fifth escapee, Isoa Waqa, was brought to Colonial War Memorial Hospital wrapped in a tarpaulin and with blood dripping from the tarpaulin"."We need to get rid of all speculations and investigate the fact," Ms Smith-Johns said."Police and the military used all their resources to recapture the escapees. We are in the process of investigating. The escapees were resisting arrest, they were armed," she said. When contacted, the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces preferred not to comment and referred all questions to police.Chief of operations Assistant Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu said he would not go against the State's comment but said reasonable

force was used during the arrest "and all other things will be investigated"."Our main priority was that we needed to take them to court, which is a normal thing. It is not the first time that reasonable force was used on escapees," ACP Tudravu said."Police are not allowed to use excessive force. Should they (activists) have any complaints, they should contact us."People are commenting and talking a lot. But they don't know what police officers faced when they stand on the ground. The escapees resisted arrest and they were armed. Our officers were also injured during the arrest," he said."As law enforcers, we are also subject to investigations."We support human rights, and if we did anything wrong, we should be investigated. We are also human beings and we understand what is coming from the families and the people. They should understand that the prisoners were dangerous."I'm telling members of the public that an investigation will be conducted on us if we had used excessive force," he added. The five escapees, four caught last Monday at Draunibota in Suva and the fifth caught at Laqere on Tuesday morning. The case of the four accused was called before the Suva Magistrates Court on Monday. They were not present because they were still in hospital and were unfit to attend court.Their case has been adjourned to October 1 for review of their health status, and the case has also been transferred to the High Court.

Indian Visitor Arrivals Up By 30%Visitor arrivals from India rose by 30 per cent last season and numbers are expected to double next year, says Fiji's Attorney General and Tourism Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.He revealed this while welcoming the Indian delegation at the Fiji India Tourism Exchange programme in Nadi.“More visitors are coming to Fiji from India than ever before and there is plenty of room for the number of arrivals to grow."“We already have significant relations between our countries. But there is vast potential to expand the flow of people between us and strengthen that relationship even further,” Sayed-Khaiyum said."Fiji is intent on carving out a bigger presence in the Indian market with new marketing strategies based on better research of what potential visitors are seeking."Sayed-Khaiyum said the recent success behind Bollywood productions in the

country had marketed Fiji not only in India but also on the international arena.“This is testimony not only to our pristine beauty, but also the Government's 47 per cent tax rebate for film production houses, which is attracting an increasing number of producers to these shores.""This rebate is the highest offered by any country in the world and Fiji expects more Bollywood films to be shot in Fiji as they are keen to capitalise on their presence in order to enhance Fiji’s marketing efforts and promotions," he added.Global Destination of India Director Palvan Kapadia said they have been marketing Fiji to India for the last 3 years through their partnership with Tourism FijiThirty-six booths displayed Fiji's tourist packages to thirty-five tourist agents from India during the tourist exchange event.

Mother Of 1-Year-Old Among 7 Charged

Seven people including three women, one of them a mother to a 1-year old kid, were charged with harbouring escapees by the Suva Magistrates.Charged are Taniela Yauyau, Laisa Elder, Livai Nabulu, Unaisi Ciri, Epeli Qaqa, Merewalesi Sikadimuri, and Asaeli Vakananumi for providing assistance to the five escapees who have been recaptured by authorities. The seven appeared before Magistrate Janaka Bandara. The girls were represented by lawyer Vasemaca Tamanisau whereas the four men asked the Court for Legal Aid assistance.Defense lawyer, Tamanisau verbally asked the court for bail application on the grounds that one of her client,

Sikadimuri is a mother who does not have anyone else to look after her baby as her husband who is a fisherman is always out fishing. She also reasoned that another of her client, Elder is a first offender and the third Ciri who has a previous criminal record has never breached bail conditions. The court said they needed to make a proper bail application. The seven have been remanded in police custody as requested by DPP lawyer Josaia Niudamu for further investigation. The seven are due to reappear at the Suva Magistrates Court on October 9.The court also heard that Nabulu has a previous criminal record.

My Dad Needs Help

"PLEASE help our daddy".That's the plea from three children as they seek financial assistance to fund surgery for their dad who has had a tube hanging from his stomach for the past four months. The children — Pranita, 12, Pritesh, 9, and Ashmita Goundar, 5, — turned their sad eyes to their dad, Rakesh Goundar as he explained the struggles he's faced since being discharged from Labasa Hospital in May.His eldest daughter Pranita said: "We want our daddy to get better. He can't work because he's sick and he's struggling to support us and our education."Mr Goundar had an operation in May and was sent home with a tube hanging from his stomach and a bag attached at the end of the tube which stores bile extracted from the kidney."I have had to carry this around with me for the past four months and it is starting to stink. The tube is thinning out and sometimes I feel the bile dripping on my stomach," he said. "I am worried that my stomach might get infected and my medical condition will get worse. I have gone many times

to the hospital but they keep telling me to get in touch with headquarters because arrangements for my trip to India for operation are being handled by them."Health Ministry deputy secretary Doctor Joe Koroivueta had requested that questions be sent to his ministry for comment. The reporter sent the questions last week but there was no response. The media contacted Dr Koroivueta again early this week and because he is currently on tour in Vanua Levu, he asked that a reminder be sent to HQ. No response was received.Mr Goundar said all the relevant documents were sent to HQ but he still had yet to receive a response."It is frustrating because no employer wants to hire me as a result of my medical condition. It is affecting my family because I am the sole bread winner. Now no one is working, so we have to struggle and I can't keep asking neighbours and relatives for food or for my children's lunch to school."Mr Goundar said prayers have helped him and his family survives the past four months.

Royal Couple Visit CampusThe Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton, visited the University of the South Pacific's Tuvalu campus last week. The campus on Funafuti Atoll was graced by the presence of the British royals on September 18, making the Duke and Duchess the first members of the royal family to visit Tuvalu since the Queen's visit in 1982.The visit was part of the couple's last stop on their Asia-Pacific tour and was expected to draw attention to the country's rising sea level issue. The expectation was highlighted when

the couple heard a poem by a student about climate change from a youth's perspective. The campus also organized displays on climate change for the royal couple's visit. They were then presented with gifts from the school. The royal couple was received at the USP Tuvalu campus by the campus director David Manuella."This was an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for, not only the students of the campus, but also for the people of Tuvalu to see Prince William and his wife in person," he said.

No More Excuses - Police ToldPolice Commissioner Brigadier-General Ioane Naivalurua has told his officers in the north not to use "no fuel" or "no transport" as an excuse for not attending to public complaints. He told his men if any officer was called before him to explain why a public complaint was not attended to; he would not want to hear the excuses of the unavailability of fuel or transport."You need to plan ahead of time. You need to know how much fuel you will need to use in a month and plan in advance," Brig-Gen Naivalurua said."Poor planning in your division is what has caused that situation of lack of fuel."We can't afford to have this excuse and tell the public that we couldn't come to their rescue because we had no fuel."People will run to us for help, to find

peace and rest and that is why they call us up."So, I don't want to hear any more excuses of no fuel or no transport available."Brig-Gen Naivalurua urged his senior officers to plan their run or patrol need and to inform headquarters about this.He also told officers to use resources well."In the weekend, most officers are off-duty and not doing anything; deploy them to high risk areas to attend to cases or raise awareness with the community."Identify high risk areas and make use of resources in these areas such as deployment of officers. Let's be flexible and know your areas of operation well.

Companies Start Using Made In Fiji Label

At least 60 companies have been licensed to use the Made in Fiji label.Trade permanent secretary Shaheen Ali said companies had started using the label. While the ministry is continuing its promotion, Mr Ali said work was also ongoing with companies who had been licensed on keeping the standards and quality of their products."So, when people see the Fijian Made logo, they associate that with the highest quality and their price effectiveness," Mr Ali said."At the moment, it is just a domestic campaign. We want to take it a step further and encourage our overseas

markets to buy as well."I think this campaign will in future assist the country in terms of building up its balance of payments. It will be a national and international marketing strategy and we are grateful for the government for giving the resources since the launch of the brand."And we are at the moment coming up with a three-year plan that will look at the sustainability of the campaign."Mr Ali said they were also looking into the small and micro enterprises as well as the handicraft industry for the use of logo."It's a cross section of companies we are wanting to help," he added.

Free Treat For Film LoversFilm lovers in Fiji will get a chance to enjoy 80 top quality films from around the world at this year's Film Festival.Organised by the Fiji National University in partnership with Fiji Film, the Indian High Commission and Damodar Brothers, the festival will be staged from October 5-18 at several locations around the country."It's an opportunity for the film audience to get exposed to international films that they otherwise do not get an opportunity to see."It's a variety of foreign and art films that will definitely develop their appetite of appreciation for films and its makings," Florence Swami, Fiji Film's acting chief executive officer said. The films are from countries like India, Iran, France, New Zealand, Siberia, Croatia, Portugal and Poland.Various categories of film, including

cinema of the world, panorama of Fiji Film, golden era retrospective, short films, documentaries and a competitive section will be shown.Twenty-three documentaries and short films from Fiji are also expected to be included in the festival."We hope that through this, the local film enthusiast gets encouraged to produce more of their work in their own languages, cultures and backgrounds."Citations and prizes will be awarded including the Golden Rose for best film and awards for best director, best male and female actors. The films will be shown at Village 6 and Village 4 cinemas, a cinema in Labasa and several FNU campuses across the country. All showings will be free and a full listing of the screenings will be released in an advertisement.

Don't Ask For TripsAny police officer who walks into the commissioner's office with a tabua to seek an overseas posting will be kicked out, says Police Commissioner Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua. He has also warned his officers not to use the purchase of their new homes as an excuse to take part in these missions."We have sent 1222 police officers to overseas missions and yet this is not reflected in the organisational performance," Brig-Gen Naivalurua said. "We need to send people who have a clear sense of purpose to overseas missions."When they return from these missions, we need to slot them within

the appropriate departments of the organisation where their newly-acquired knowledge and skills would be applicable."Brig-Gen Naivalurua said when he first started with the force; he noticed that the officers accepted a low standard of work.He said people chosen for mission duties must be disciplined, have a clean service record and must pass the required fitness levels. In addition, officers over the age of 50 would not be sent abroad accept at his discretion. "We need to be professional and fair when we are determining the conditions under which to send our personnel overseas," he added

Celebrate Fiji Day Encourages Dr Brij Lal

It is vital that Fiji students understand the importance of Fiji Day, says the Permanent Secretary for Education, Dr Brij Lal. “Students must be taught to take pride in their country. They should have love for their culture, dream great things for the development of its land and people. Most importantly they should be able to contribute for the betterment of Fiji,” he stated as his ministry prepares the groundwork for school celebrations on October 10. “Schools may participate in the

Fiji Day celebration in their cities, towns and districts. Head teachers and principals are to see that proper arrangements are made for students’ participation since the celebration falls on Wednesday.”He said schools in rural areas and outer islands would also mark the day. “For the island schools and those in the remote and rural areas, celebrations are to be done in your respective school premises. Activities are to be organized well, so students may understand the importance of Fiji Day,” he said.

Soon 2 FNPF Accounts For Members Fiji’s National Provident Fund will set up two accounts for all members as required by the FNPF Decree 2011.The two accounts are Preserved and General – with the former to constitute 70 per cent of a member’s total savings which will be set aside for pension and the latter makes up 30 per cent of the member’s balance which can be accessed by members for partial withdrawal under approved grounds including education, medical, housing, funeral and unemployment assistance.

FNPF in a statement said first time property buyers will be allowed to access up to 30 per cent of their Preserved Account if they are applying for assistance to buy your first home/land.“This will be in addition to the 30% from your General Account. Thus, you can access 51% of your total FNPF savings (30% + 30% of the 70% = 51%) for this purpose,” the statement said.FNPF assures members that they will be advised well in advance of the implementation date of these two accounts.

ATH Announces $8.44M PayoutIt was a big payday for Amalgamated Telecom Holdings Limited shareholders as the company paid a final dividend of over $8.44million or 2 per cent share. In a statement signed by ATH director Arun Narsey and company secretary Ivan Fong, 897 shareholders were expected to receive their share of the final dividend either through the mail or direct deposit into their bank accounts."The two largest shareholders, the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) and the government will receive $4.9m and

$2.9m respectively," the statement said. The final dividend was declared by shareholders at their annual general meeting on August 29, 2012. It is in addition to an interim dividend of over $4.22m that was paid on March 14 (this year) and brings the total dividends paid out to $12,663,164.04 for the financial year ending March 31.It was earlier reported the group made an improvement in profits from $4.1m in the 2011 financial year to $18.3m in the 2012 financial year.

Labasa Town Hit By Flood WatersVanua Levu experienced heavy rainfall and thunderstorms causing flood in the main street of Labasa Town.People were carefully wading through flooded areas in town, vehicles were caught up in a jam and students started making their way back home as heavy rain swept through the north.Vunivau resident Mahend Singh said it was hard to get through town because of the flooded pavement and road. Others in town blamed blocked drains as the cause of flash floods. But Labasa and Savusavu Town Special Administrator Vijay Kumar refuted the claims saying it was the heavy rain that caused flooding and not the drain blockages. As of

midday Wednesday, the Northern Command Centre at Labasa Police Station confirmed everything was normal with all police centers around the north reporting no cases of flooding.Director Meteorological Services Alipate Waqaicelua said the wet spell experienced through Vanua Levu and western Lau was caused by an active trough of low pressure transiting out of the Fiji group."We expect showers to linger in most parts of Fiji through the weekend due to another slow moving trough of low pressure currently developing to the west of the country that will affect us," said Mr Waqaicelua.

Fiji’s Democracy Progress Report Well Received By ACP-EU

Fiji’s report on progress towards democracy and reforms has been well received by the ACP-EU Joint parliamentary assembly. This follows a report by the joint ACP & EU fact finding mission that visited Fiji this year to assess the reforms currently being implemented by Government. Responding to the report, the Bureau of the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary expressed satisfaction with the mission’s observations and recommendations. The report acknowledges that the process for the restoration of democracy depends on the people of Fiji themselves, according to their own social, economic and political priorities. The Bureau had met in Brussels this month to deliberate on the report which also looked at the progress made by authorities to return the country to

constitutional order and parliamentary democracy. The Bureau remained confident that the Fijian people can find solutions to the political issues that confront them and build a better society for present and future generations. Fiji’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ratu Inoke Kubuabola said the report acknowledges the work undertaken by Government to move the country towards elections in 2014. Kubuabola said Fiji’s ambassador to the EU will be forwarding the report to the European Commission for its consideration and hope that its positivity will fast-track a complete change of perception, that has been so far coloured by Australia and New Zealand and Pacific Island Forum.

Fantasy Island Takes Shape

The access channel from Nadi Bay into the area designated as the Port Fantasy Marina has now been completed.Dredging has been underway for the last five weeks to open the already completed channel to Nadi Bay and to dredge eight hundred meters out into the Bay to provide a channel with sufficient depth for most vessels to use at all tides. The channel is eighty meters wide for the entire length and has a minimum depth at low tide of two and a half meters (at high tide it is in excess of four and a half meters) As well as providing direct access for the Port Fantasy Marina to the Bay, the breakthrough also allows access for all of the internal channels in the development, for most vessels, at all tides. This means that property owners in the Fantasy Island development can now have twenty-four hour access from the pontoon at the end of their garden to the Nadi Bay area. The Fantasy Island Development is the largest canal development in Fiji and the network of deep canals that radiate off the main entrance channel make unhindered access easy. The Fantasy Island project lies between two other major Nadi Bay developments, Denarau and Naisoso Island. The Fantasy Resort development is situated close to Nadi Town and a short drive from Denarau Island and is at the heart of the fast growing tourism area. The planned Nadi Bypass Road will make the travelling time to Nadi and Denarau even faster. Abbas Ali, Managing Director for the development says “We started the project in 1990 with a clear vision of what we wanted to achieve, using the economically unproductive swampland. “What we have achieved far exceeds our wildest dreams, and is a land development of which we are very proud.“The location can never again be matched, especially the proximity to Nadi Town, while still enjoying the quite of the rural surroundings”.NETWORKThe canal network also makes each of

the residential lots in the development very private as the site opens out onto the water with houses on the other side of the canal a considerable distance away. The canals give an added sense of space and provide interesting vistas and potentially good fishing right from your own backyard. The port Fantasy Marina project at the other end of the main channel will provide a significant commercial port, boat yard, fisherman’s port and marine facilities within the complex.Plans are completed for the Port and the Marina complex. The two storey passenger terminal will be built on an acre and a half of land fronting the main harbor area. The terminal building has a ground floor of over three thousand square meters with the upper floor a little more than half that size.In addition to the terminal space the facility will house rental offices, shops and a restaurant and the upper floor will house an international standard nightclub, restaurant and bar. The terminal will have magnificent views of Nadi Bay.The main access channel from Nadi Bay to the Terminal is eighty meters wide, six hundred meters long and has a maximum depth at high tide of four and a half meters for the full length. There will be a full range of services in the marina including water, power, sewer, and a fuel depot. The harbour will have both pontoon moorings and swing moorings. The total water area of the harbour is five acres with the surrounding canals adding a further five acres of water. The entire port area is designated as a commercial port catering to tourist transportation by boat and other water based sporting activities related to tourism. It is also expected that a significant number of private vessels will use the moorings.Behind the large commercial marina is a fisherman’s port for the use of local fishermen, who are engaged in the industry as a livelihood and it will fill a much needed function as

there is currently no place for these hard working people to conduct their business. The area will include a cold storage complex, ice making equipment, fuelling services, an easily accessible boat storage yard and a workshop for repairs as well as adequate and safe jetty space. For bigger vessels there will be a storage and repair yard which will house services such as mechanical repairs and maintenance facilities. The rest of the ten acres of land on which the port facilities will be built is designated as commercial. There are twenty-eight commercial lots sub-divided into separate titles ranging in size from one thousand five hundred square meters to eight hundred square meters.Depending on size and location the lots are priced from $175,000 to $350,000 plus VAT.The cost estimates in place are that the construction of stage one will cost $3.5 million for the marina and facilities such as the terminal building will cost an additional $3.0 million.STAGE FOUR UNDERWAYWith the completion of the access channel, the work on the final stage of the Fantasy island development, Stage Four, has started. This stage features a large hotel/resort site, a long stretch of beach front on Nadi Bay and an enclosed and very well protected inner beach area. There are also two large lakes of sea water. All the villa sites in this stage have direct water access, most of them beachfront. The hotel resort is planned as a full five star facility with its own private beach. The resort will add significant value to the whole development.Completion date for Stage Four is to be December 2013. Already the rock foundations for the perimeter walls are being put in place and these will be faced with local rock as erosion protection. The final dredging of all the internal canals will then take place and the calcite sand reclaimed during this operation will be placed inside the wall structures to lift the land to the designated levels. Sales are proceeding in the other stages of the development.STAGE ONE SOLDAll of Stage One has been sold and Stages Two and Three are moving forward well. The main access road is currently being upgraded by the Roads Authority, with forming and drainage well advanced. The upgrade of this road will make access to the development fast and easy. Several other projects within the Fantasy area are also proceeding to plan and the infrastructure is growing.A number of new private residential buildings are in the planning stages or work has started and the permanent population of the Fantasy Island is growing.

Pharmacy To Open In Damodar City Complex

The excitement and hype surrounding the progress and development of the $30million Damodar City went up a notch after Superdrug Pharmacy Laucala joined the list of tenants to occupy the multiplex cinema complex.Prabhay Nand, the young entrepreneur who owns the soon-to-be-opened pharmacy, signed the deal alongside Damodar Brothers (Films) Limited chief executive officer Div Damodar at Nand's Mall in Suva."It's going to be innovative, customer focused, new and fresh — something Fiji hasn't seen before," said Mr Nand, adding it would also serve as a gift shop with a variety of items for all customers."I think it's about time Fiji has something like this that will lift the standard of pharmacy all over the country.

"At the moment, we're looking at (employing) two full-time pharmacists. I'd say almost 10 full time employees."This will be the third Superdrug pharmacy to open (in the Central Division) and should be a cut above the rest. I'm looking forward to getting it all done. Hopefully we can open by Christmas."Meanwhile, complex manager Carmelita Price revealed they had reached 75 per cent of total occupancy. While details of the rent costs are kept confidential as part of their agreement with tenants, Ms Price said rent would depend on the size or space occupied and location of tenancy.Ms Price said tenants would be allowed to operate as soon as their internal set up was complete but this would not necessarily mean the formal opening of the Damodar complex.

Coral Coast PromotionThe Coral Coast Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association has joined the advent of information technology by recently launching their new website which allows local and overseas guests to view the best in tourism along the Coral Coast. The joint initiative with a cohesive approach towards boosting our tourism industry took 30 days to set up even though the initial idea started three years ago when operators along the Coral Coast came up with the idea to promote, develop and establish their side of town as a premier holiday destination.Association chairman Peter Hopgood said the new website (coralcoastfiji.

org) promoted three elements abundant in supply along the Coral Coast — tradition, culture and nature."In the past, the resorts (Coral Coast) worked individually to promote their specific product in the region. The hotels were never united in their promotion of this beautiful destination," he said."Our goal is to make Fiji the preferred destination for travellers from Australia and New Zealand then they choose the Coral Coast as the preferred region — then we will fight over where they stay."The operators on the Coral Coast are very happy with the direction that Tourism Fiji is going in promoting the destination."

Friendly North Gets Shopping Mall

Labasa's first-ever shopping mall with a total of 10 shops to operate under one complex is now open. The family-owned business known as the "Northwinds Plaza" cost Paul Jaduram Investment Limited close to $1million. Company managing director Paul Jaduram said the shops are now open for business operations but the official launch of the mall would be organised at a later date."This is a double-storey complex and the Centre Point Hotel is situated on the upper floor with 12 rooms while the shops are based on the ground floor," Mr Jaduram said."We spent about $200,000 for renovation works before the shops were rented out

to interested business bodies."Such investments will not only rake in a lot of money for the northern economy but also give an opportunity for people to trade in different shops under one roof," he said.Mr Jaduram said they had their sights on other major investments to boost their business operations."This is a major transition for the people of Vanua Levu because it's going to be the first of its kind to be based on the main street," he said. Some shops at the complex include Rachael's Coffee Shop, Shoes and Sports, Praveen's Hair Salon, Enjoy Restaurants, Remix Clothing and Exotic Electro Movie World.

Potato Harvesting Season BeginsPotato harvesting has begun in the Western Division and the government hoping for around $1.7 million worth of potatoes.Director for Extension Services at the Agriculture Department Uraia Waibuta says farmers are producing results however the cost of production is high.Waibuta says they are trying to reduce the cost to around 65 to 70 cents a kg

so the farmers can compete with the overseas imported potatoes. He says the price of potatoes in the local supermarkets is around 65 cents to 75 cents a kg and this will continue to challenge the local potato industry. The Agriculture Department anticipates harvesting about 1,800 tonnes of potatoes by the end of the month.

Cruise LessonsSis University of the South Pacific (USP) students will travel onboard P&O Cruisers' ships next year as interns.A statement said this was the result of a "successful partnership USP has developed with Carnival Australia — a leader in the cruise industry for the

region". This partnership is beneficial for involved parties, says School of Tourism and Hospitality Management head Professor David Harrison."Carnival Australia is able to obtain a good supply of graduates, and STHM is pleased with its graduates' achievement," he said.

Heated Debate Over Denarau Bridge Toll

Heated discussion erupted over plans to charge a toll to fund a new bridge to the tourism island of Denarau, Nadi.Stakeholders of Denarau Island were being briefed on the progress on a needed new bridge following problems with the current bridge. The existing bridge which allows access to Denarau’s popular resorts, shopping centre and port, and many other facilities was built more than 40 years ago.Denarau Corporation Limited board member Bob Lyons addressed the stakeholders at Denarau. He informed them that Government has agreed, in principle, to loan the corporation $8 million for the construction of the new bridge. He said that in order to pay off the loan, a toll would be imposed on the bridge for every vehicle entering Denarau Islands.Mr Lyons said the toll would be placed on entry into Denarau for an indefinite period. Once the Government loan is paid off, money raised from the toll would go towards the maintenance of roads in Denarau Island. He added that this would result in reduction of rates and capital expenditure for properties and other operators who operate out of Denarau Island.Mr Lyons said as a board member, he supported the toll idea, adding that they would then have a monopoly over the bridge and would be able to make money off it.The call for toll to be imposed was widely criticized at the meeting and many present raised questions regarding the validity of imposing tolls.Port Denarau Retail and Commercial Centre general manager Aysha Koya said they totally opposed the toll.“During off peak seasons, people coming into the Island are mostly locals and this toll will not encourage

anybody to come into Port Denarau to shop and eat,” she said. The director of Tradewinds Marine Limited John Philp said Government needed to pay for the construction of the new bridge.Mr Philp said: “All the tolls that you come across in overseas is only acceptable by ratepayers because they have a choice of either paying toll and saving time or using a longer means. This is a monopoly which is ridiculous.”He stressed that Government should be approached again with a new proposal to fund the construction of the new bridge, as some 40 per cent of tourism revenue is generated from Denarau Island. Mr Philp also suggested that the existing bridge be repaired and the Corporation wait till 2014 for the next Government and approach them again with a proposal to fund the construction of the bridge. The structural engineers commissioned by the Corporation to assess the existing bridge, Houng Lee Kaba (hlk) Jacob Limited informed the stakeholders that they would not be able to give a definite time till when the existing bridge will last.Ravindra Pillay said the tonnage over the bridge needed to be monitored. But he said he could not give a definite answer as to how long the existing bridge would last or how soon a new one needed to be built.A new bridge would take at least 12 to 16 months to construct, the meeting heard. The $8 million interest-free loan agreed to by the Government in principle is yet to be signed. Also, tenders for construction of the new bridge are to be called to see the best available option. Tenders are expected to be called and finalised in December and construction of the new bridge is likely to commence in January.

Ba School Joins Go Green Campaign

Students of AD Patel College in Ba collected over 100 garbage bags full of rubbish when they took part in the Go Green clean-up campaign. The school first took part in the Bank of South Pacific initiative last year and was excited to join the environmental cause this time around."The students were excited. It wasn't just a time for us to come together and bond as a school but also to promote a cause that we know is worthy for our generation and the generations to come," said teacher Samlesh Chand.Over 100 students from Forms Three to Five took part in the hour-long

clean-up.Mr Chand said they started the campaign cleaning up in the school and went as far as the Sahaj Supermarket."Prior to this, we had students in the Duke of Edinburgh program and scouts in the school clean-up of the Mission Hospital in Ba Town."Even before and after the Go Green clean-up campaign, our school is committed to its environmental role of cleaning our surroundings," he said.AD Patel College was one of over 70 schools that had registered with BSP for the environmentally-friendly campaign.

are in circulation in Fiji and abroad and close to five hundred have been requested from the printers.Deo has also made his submission to the Constitution Commission in regards to child abuse in Fiji.Meanwhile, his mother Pushpa Wati said that Deo has always made him proud.“He had always struggled to achieve his goals. Discover To Refund $200M To Customers

America's sixth-largest credit card issuer has agreed to pay $200m (£123m) in refunds to settle accusations it misled customers into add-on services.Discover Bank will also pay a $14m fine, after regulators said it enrolled clients in schemes such as credit monitoring, without consent. It is the third public enforcement action taken by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).More than 3.5 million customers are to receive refunds.About two million of them will be repaid all the charges against them. Those incorrectly charged for the add-on services between December 2007 and August 2011 are to be repaid for at least 90 days worth of fees. The investigation found "Discover's telemarketing scripts contained many misrepresentations, implying that

these products were free of charge and simply 'added benefits'," CFPB director Richard Cordray told reporters.Regulators also found in some cases that telemarketers had been paid incentives to enroll customers in the add-on products, Mr Cordray added. As part of the settlement, Discover agreed to change its telemarketing approach and employ an independent auditor. In a statement from its parent company, Discover Financial Services chairman and chief executive David Nelms said the company had "worked hard to earn the loyalty of our card members, and we are committed to marketing our products responsibly".The CFPB was created in 2010 to protect consumers from hidden fees. Its first enforcement action was a $210m settlement with Capital One Financial in July.

Fraud Scams Target Retirees Through Social Media

"We're talking about somebody who's a mastermind of the scam, maybe someone from Europe or the US or the UK," he said."They will go down to the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, and they will set up what's called a boiler room, effectively a small call centre. "Through Facebook or Twitter they'll attract English-speaking people from the local area who have good American accents, good UK accents, to make it sound more authentic when they call you and try and take your money from you." Mr Day says fraudsters still use the simple phone call to your home to try to rope people in, but are now also capitalising on social media. "These guys do a really good number in putting together very sophisticated, very professional-looking websites," he said."They'll also use web technology to create reviews of their services so that when you do a Google search for the name of their fictitious company that will turn up higher on the searches probably than our searches sometimes. "They'll also use other web technology to create other websites say from fictitious foreign regulators that they say they're licensed by as well."Background checksMr Day says even though consumers

do background checks, the fraudsters can still make their telephone numbers look as though they are local and authentic. "They'll give you a number that's effectively a 1300 or an 1800 number here in Australia, which will transfer to their call centre somewhere in Asia," he said."You honestly might think that you're ringing the US, you may think that you're ringing Queensland or South Australia, but the reality is you know you're ringing that call centre. "They've got very good scripts in terms of keeping you on the hook, keeping you investing, keeping you placated in terms of any scrutiny or any curiosity you may have about their authenticity or not." Mr Day says the bogus operators are also prepared in the event you want to speak to their supervisor. "If you want to speak to the supervisor, they'll have escalated scripts, so someone will play the role of the supervisor."They'll start other efforts to authenticate themselves, so they'll send you emails with fictitious balance sheets of how well your investments are going."They'll send you good news emails saying the price of the share has doubled would you like to put more in."

Bureaucrat Budgets To Be SlashedPUBLIC servants were told to communicate and advertise online, rather than on paper, and fly at the back of the plane, not in business class. These moves, including a ban on some international travel, are part of a $550 million Government spending attack over the next four years. The Government is desperate to show it can prune spending on the bureaucracy without sacking public servants as it battles to deliver on its promise of a Budget surplus in 2012-13. It has been highly critical of public service retrenchments by Liberal premiers in Queensland and NSW.Government forced to rewrite budgetBut it needs to recover close to $40 billion in spending to rescue the current Budget and meet its target, with an inter mid-year economic and fiscal outlook to be released late in the year.Finance Minister Penny Wong said $550 million would be saved through efficiencies with $30 million to come

from "across-the-board reductions in air travel spending, including restrictions on business class flights".Some $2 million will be recovered through more online advertising for staff. Senator Wong said this would recognise "that more people are now looking for jobs on the internet".Printing costs will be reduced by five per cent for a $6 million saving from a "greater reliance on publishing online only".Senator Wong said the aim was to put more department publications online."We are starting with a small amount of the total budget there and we will look to build that over time as we can try and move more of the Government's publications online," she said. The use of consultants will be reduced to save $60 million in this financial year alone. "Labor target efficiencies; the Coalition slashes jobs", Senator Wong told reporters.

Panda Cub Dies At Washington's National Zoo

A week-old giant panda cub has died at Washington DC's National Zoo, with the cause of its death not immediately apparent.Zoo staff was alerted to the cub's plight after its mother, Mei Xiang, was heard making sounds of distress. The tiny cub was removed from the panda enclosure but attempts to revive it proved unsuccessful. The zoo said the cub weighed just under 100g (3.5oz), and that there were no obvious signs of injury or infection. In a statement, the zoo said: "We are broken-hearted to share that we have lost our little giant panda cub. "Panda keepers and volunteers heard

Mei Xiang make a distress vocalisation at 09:17 (13:17 GMT) and let the veterinarian staff know immediately. "They... were able to safely retrieve the cub for an evaluation at 10:22, which we only do in situations of gravest concern. "The veterinarians immediately performed CPR and other life-saving measures, but sadly the cub was unresponsive."Fourteen-year-old Mei Xiang had five failed pregnancies before giving birth to the cub, which was conceived by artificial insemination after she and the zoo's male, Tian Tian, failed to mate.Only one panda cub has survived at the zoo in the past.

Obama Issues Warning To Iran In UN SpeechUS president Barack Obama has warned the United States will do what it must to prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapons. Taking the podium at the United Nations General Assembly six weeks before the US presidential election, Mr Obama told the world body there is still time for diplomacy with Iran, but that time is limited. His tough talk on the first day of the UN summit appeared aimed at easing Israeli concerns about US resolve to curb Tehran's nuclear drive. But he stopped short of meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's demand to set a clear "red line" that Iran must not cross if it is to avoid military action."Make no mistake, a nuclear-armed Iran is not a challenge that can be contained," he said."It would threaten the elimination of Israel, the security of Gulf nations and the stability of the global economy."It risks triggering a nuclear arms race in the region."That is why a coalition of countries is holding the Iranian government accountable. "And that is why the United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon."Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was also in New York preparing for his own annual UN speech and was in typically defiant form, denying that Iran is seeking the bomb and dismissing threats of military action.'Sounding the alarm'In an apparent allusion to recent comments by the US, Israeli and Iran,

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon opened the annual assembly by warning states against threatening to attack one another."I reject both the language of delegitimisation and threats of potential military action by one state against another," Mr Ban said. "Any such attacks would be devastating. The shrill war talk of recent weeks has been alarming."In a speech that covered everything from climate change to the conflict in Syria, Mr Ban said it was time to tackle threats to global security."We gather annually in this great hall to look soberly and without illusion at the state of our world," he said."And this year, I am here to sound the

alarm about our direction as a human family. "We can all see widespread insecurity, and injustice, inequality and intolerance."'Assault on America'Mr Obama also sought to reassure voters that he is doing everything he can to head off violence like the September 11 attack in Libya that killed US ambassador Chris Stevens and three of his colleagues. The unrest, sparked by a crude anti-Islam video made in California, was followed by a wave of Muslim anger across the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia."The attacks of the last two weeks are not simply an assault on America.

They are also an assault on the very ideals upon which the United Nations was founded," Mr Obama said."Today, we must declare that this violence and intolerance has no place among our United Nations."Mr Obama condemned the film, but defended the right to free speech."There are no words that excuse the killing of innocents. There is no video that justifies an attack on an embassy," he said."There is no slander that provides an excuse for people to burn a restaurant in Lebanon, or destroy a school in Tunis, or cause death and destruction in Pakistan."Mr Obama also called on the regime of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad to come to an end. "I am convinced that ultimately government of the people, by the people and for the people is more likely to bring about... the basis for peace in our world," he said."Let us remember that this is the season of progress," he added, referring to the Arab Spring. Gillard sickPrime Minister Julia Gillard was forced to pull out of several engagements in New York, including the reception for world leaders hosted by Mr Obama, due to a stomach bug.Ms Gillard arrived in New York on Monday for the start of a week of lobbying world leaders to win Australia a seat on the UN Security Council. The push for the seat has cost an estimated $40 million over four years, with Australia is competing against Finland and Luxembourg for one of two non-permanent positions available.

Britain And Canada To Have Joint Diplomatic Missions OverseasBritain is to establish joint diplomatic missions abroad with Canada, the Foreign Secretary William Hague will announce.Mr Hague is to reveal details of this planned new co-operation when he meets his Canadian counterpart John Baird in Ottawa on Monday. The agreement for joint diplomatic missions overseas could eventually involve Australia and New Zealand. Mr Hague says it will give Britain "a bigger reach abroad for less cost".The aim is to expand the countries' diplomatic presence in places where

either London or Ottawa does not already have an embassy. Mr Hague has issued a statement ahead of his announcement on Monday, which said: "As David Cameron said when addressing the Canadian parliament last year: 'we are two nations, but under one Queen and united by one set of values'." "We have stood shoulder to shoulder from the great wars of the last century to fighting terrorists in Afghanistan and supporting Arab Spring Nations like Libya and Syria. We are first cousins."So it is natural that we look to link up

William Hague says the new arrangement will extend Britain's

our embassies with Canada's in places where that suits both countries. It will give us a bigger reach abroad for our businesses and people for less cost."The BBC's diplomatic correspondent Jonathan Marcus says that, while money is one factor driving co-operation, this diplomatic link-up will also play well in euro-skeptic circles within the Conservative Party, where there is a good deal of unease at the expansion of the European Union's own diplomatic corps - the External Action Service.

Fake Doctor Arrested At Tokyo HospitalJapanese police have arrested a man for posing as a doctor at a Tokyo hospital and conducting health checks on more than 2,000 people.Police say Miyabi Kuroki registered as a doctor with a job agency three years ago, using the identity of a real doctor with the same surname. The university dropout then got a job at a Tokyo hospital after showing administrators a copy of a fake medical

license. For nearly two years he conducted check-ups, seeing a total of 2,300 patients and pocketing tens of thousands of dollars in fees.Police started investigating Kuroki after a medical school where he had worked as an instructor contacted them about their concerns about his qualifications. The suspect reportedly admitted the wrongdoing, telling investigators: "I

wanted money to pay child care and living expenses."The hospital where he worked has

apologized for the incident and asked all those seen by him to go back for re-testing.

Clinton Hints At Possible Hillary White House Bid

Former US president Bill Clinton has not ruled out that his wife Hillary may run for president in the future. The 64-year-old US secretary of state was defeated for the Democratic nomination by Barack Obama in 2008 and has since said repeatedly she would not again seek to be America's first female president. But Mr Clinton, interviewed by broadcaster CBS and asked whether his wife might run in four years' time, hinted it was a possibility."I have no earthly idea what she will decide to do," Mr Clinton said.He said his wife was tired after all her hectic years of public service - eight as first lady when he was president from 1993 to 2001, then eight more as a senator representing the state of New York and now as secretary of state.Ms Clinton has said she would step down from her current job whether Mr Obama wins re-election on November 6 or not."She wants to take some time off, kind of regroup, write a book," Mr Clinton told CBS."I think we ought to give her a chance to organise her life and decide what she

wants to do," he added. While Ms Clinton has remained generally outside the political fray during this election season, her husband has seized a prominent role in campaigning for Mr Obama's re-election.Even so, Hillary Clinton is herself known as one of the Democratic Party's most influential and best-networked insiders.Mr Clinton said that no matter what, there would be a strong crop of Democrats interested in running for the Oval Office in 2016, including governors and members of congress."We've got a lot of able people in our party who want to be president," he said. However, he said that with his wife's experience in the White House, where she led an unsuccessful effort to overhaul the US healthcare system, on Capitol Hill and in the administration, there would be no-one more qualified than her to run."She's the ablest - I know I'm biased - but I think she demonstrated as senator and as secretary of state that she has extraordinary ability," Mr Clinton said.

Hillary Clinton has said she would step down from her current job whether Barack Obama wins re-election or not.

Hot Dog Server's Family Wins Lotto Three Times

Good fortune and having children just seem to go together for Norwegian mother Hege Jeanette Oksnes. Each time the 29-year-old petrol station attendant from tiny Austevoll island off Norway's west coast gives birth, someone in her family wins the national lottery."This is completely insane... we don't even play the lottery that often," Ms Oksnes said only days after the family collected 12.2 million crowns ($2.12 million) with their third lottery win in six years.Ms Oksnes, who serves hot dogs at a petrol station, gave birth to her first child in 2006 just one day after her father Leif won 4.2 million crowns on

the national lottery.Three years later, Ms Oksnes herself won, claiming 8.2 million crowns one day before giving birth to her second child. To complete the hat-trick, Ms Oksnes' 18-year-old brother Tord won the very same lottery this weekend, just months after she gave birth to her third child. After three children though, it may be time to call it quits."My husband thinks we have enough money now," she said.Ms Oksnes bought new cars with her winnings and did a bit of traveling, but has put most of the money in the bank, hoping to find a dream property to build a new house.

Marines Face Court Martial Over Corpse Urination

Two US Marines will face trial by courts martial for urinating on the bodies of dead Taliban fighters in Afghanistan and posing for photographs with them, the Pentagon says. The charges against staff sergeants Joseph Chamblin and Edward Deptola come a month after three other Marines were sanctioned administratively for their role in the July 2011 incident in Helmand province.A videotape that surfaced on the internet in January showed four US troops urinating on three bloodied corpses and one of the men, apparently aware he was being filmed, saying: "Have a great day, buddy," to one of the dead. The Pentagon says charges against the sergeants concern "violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice for their involvement in urinating on deceased Taliban fighters and for posing for unofficial photographs with human casualties".They also are charged with dereliction of duty for a number of other command failures involving younger Marines.

The actions depicted in the video took place during a counter-insurgency operation in the restive Musa Qala district of Helmand province. The video caused great embarrassment to the US military and prompted a Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigation as well as condemnation and an apology from defense secretary Leon Panetta. At the time the urination video surfaced, Mr Panetta said the troops' behaviour was "utterly deplorable," while secretary of state Hillary Clinton spoke of her "total dismay" at the acts, vowing the culprits would be found and punished. The three US Marines who received administrative punishment last month over the urination incident in Afghanistan pleaded guilty.Punishment from administrative proceedings - as opposed to courts martial - can include reduction in rank, restriction to a military base, extra duties, and forfeiture of pay, a reprimand or a combination of such measures.

YouTube footage uploaded in January shows US Marines urinating on corpses.

Popstar, 24, Falls For Model, 12 A 24-year-old popstar and a 12-year-old model have apparently fallen for one another, sending social networks in China and around the world into a frenzy. Akama Miki, 12, declared her love to Zhang Muyi, twice her age and more importantly an adult, and it appears the feeling is mutual.Miki's a pre-teen sensation in China with a huge following - about 500,000 on the Chinese social network Weibo - and only follows one person back: Muyi. The two have posted lovey-dovey posts to each other and photos of themselves together on Weibo. While there’s no suggestion of a physical relationship, Muyi wished her a happy 12th birthday and vowed to

wait "four more birthdays" until Miki is a legal age.Miki responded: "I will always love you and you will be my darling forever!!!", attaching a couple of love hearts at the end.The photo of the pair touching fingers by the water at night, expressing a kiss, has created shockwaves.Web skeptics have been quick to call the relationship a fake and a publicity stunt.Still, why would a 24-year-old pretend to be in love with a child to boost his profile? If you take away "popstar" and "model", you're just left with a 24-year-old man declaring his love for a 12-year-old. Alarm bells are ringing.

B.C. Premier’s Chief Of Staff Resigns Over ‘Inappropriate’ incident B.C. Premier Christy Clark’s chief of staff, Ken Boessenkool, resigned abruptly Monday over an “incident of concern.”Clark said an incident involving Boessenkool occurred a few weeks ago but privacy laws prevented her from

disclosing why he stepped down.“This was a completely unexpected event. This is not the sort of thing that anyone can anticipate,” Clark said at a news conference Monday. “I learned about it a couple of weeks ago and that is when the investigation began.”

But according to sources, the incident occurred Sept. 7, after many Liberal government politicians and staff members had participated at a golf tournament at the Metchosin Golf and Country Club just west of Victoria, to raise money for the B.C. Liberal party.By tradition, media were also present, but the event is considered off-the-record, to allow politicians and reporters to socialize freely. However, one source said Boessenkool and others later moved the party to a pub a few blocks away from the Legislature.Details of the incident are uncertain, but shortly thereafter the Premier’s office began an investigation of Boessenkool’s conduct at the pub. When the investigation was complete, the Premier met with Boessenkool. She said they both agreed he needed to resign, which he did.Clark refused to comment on whether the incident involved a political staffer or whether Boessenkool was accused of groping a woman. She indicated the incident was not criminal in nature.Boessenkool, a former staffer for Prime Minister Stephen Harper, expressed his

regret in his letter of resignation.“…I acted inappropriately,” he wrote. “I was wrong, regretted my behaviour very much and immediately and unconditionally apologized.”“Notwithstanding my genuine apology and sense of regret, and following my meeting with you earlier today I tender my letter of resignation as your chief of staff effective immediately.” Boessenkool said he would return to Calgary to be with his family from whom he’d been separated on a weekly basis most of the past eight months and who he had “also let down.”“Nothing should stand in the way of your successful leadership,” he added in his letter to Clark.Clark replaced Boessenkool with Dan Doyle, who left BC Hydro’s board for his new position.Doyle is a former VANOC (Vancouver Olympic Committee) executive vice-president responsible for venue construction.“Dan is a man who has committed himself to public service for 36 years. He is the guy who can step in and make sure we don’t miss a beat,” Clark added.

Woman Fights New Alberta Law Allowing Police To Seize Car

Police threatened to seize vehicle under tougher drinking-and-driving law

A Sherwood Park woman is calling for changes to a new law that allows police to seize vehicles of drivers who have been drinking, even if the vehicle is stolen."I understand why the legislation is in place," said Susan Wiese. "But it makes another victim out of drinking and driving."Wiese's 18-year-old son took her car without permission early Monday morning. He was pulled over by RCMP and given a breathalyzer test, which recorded a blood/alcohol reading between .05 and .08, she said.Police called Wiese at 2:30 a.m. to come pick up her car, which she did before returning home to bed.An hour or so later, police arrived at her home saying they wanted to seize the vehicle under the Traffic Safety Amendment Act which became law this month. It allows police to seize the vehicle of any driver caught with a blood/alcohol content greater than .05.'It didn't make any sense'"They wanted my keys and they wanted me to be cooperative and I

didn't understand," she said. "It didn't make any sense."After she refused to hand over her keys, more police arrived along with a tow-truck driver."I asked them if they could take my car off my property without a warrant and they said they couldn't."Police told her they would not seek a warrant, but warned Weise that her car could be seized at any time. "I could go to work and my car could be gone, could be seized," she said.Police relented, she said, when they released her son later in the morning, telling him they would not pursue seizure of the car.Wiese said seizing her car penalizes the wrong person."Without writing something into legislation that protects people who have their vehicles taken without their permission, stolen, it makes another victim because now those people are accountable," she said.Transportation Ministry spokesperson Parker Hogan said vehicle owners can appeal seizures and be reimbursed for costs.

Beef Products Recalled Due To E. Coli Concerns

Meats sold at Costco, Safeway, Walmart and Calahoo stores across Canada

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has ordered a recall of ground beef products sold across Canada at Costco, Walmart, Safeway and Calahoo Meats stores, because it may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria. Most of the products, from XL Food in Alberta, were distributed in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario but the Costco products were sold right across Canada under the Kirkland Signature brand. But CFIA food recall manager Garfield Balsom says products from other retailers should be checked because smaller stores may have bought items wholesale from larger retailers such as Costco and repackaged them."There are maybe situations where somebody has removed the label or there's some secondary distribution of the product and hopefully if the consumer has the product and they are not sure, they can go back to the store,"

"Our advice is to return to their point of sale and inquire whether that product is part of the recall," he said."The last advice is, if you're not sure then don't eat it."The recalled products include ground beef, burger patties, ground chuck, ground sirloin patties, stuffed peppers, meatballs, beef sliders, meatloaf, cheddar cheese patties and ground beef cubes. The products were packed between Aug. 29 and Sept. 15, and could have "best before" or "freeze by" dates from Sept. 9 to Sept 23. The CFIA says there have been no reported illnesses but has a complete list of the products on its website. The meat may have been contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 and might not look or smell spoiled, according to the CFIA. Consumption of beef contaminated with the bacteria can cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses.

Son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau was coy all summer about leadership intentions

The long wait for Justin Trudeau's difficult decision appears to be over: Radio-Canada is reporting that the Quebec MP and son of former prime minister Pierre Trudeau will announce early next week that he will run for the leadership of the federal Liberal Party.Trudeau is expected to make the announcement at a news conference in his Montreal riding of Papineau on Tuesday.Throughout the summer, Trudeau was non-committal when pressed about a potential run for the party's top job, citing his desire to spend more time with his children. Two weeks ago, a leadership bid looked more plausible when rumours flared that Trudeau was ready to put his name in the ring.A new Liberal leader will be chosen in April, after Michael Ignatieff resigned in the wake of the party’s disastrous showing in the last federal election.Bob Rae, the interim Liberal leader, has already announced he won’t run.Other leadership hopefulsAs for Trudeau's potential challengers, there's already talk that the party is putting pressure on Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney to run for the job.Last April, Carney said in a television interview that he was not contemplating political life and was "absolutely focused" on his current job.Toronto lawyer Deborah Coyne and Manitoba paramedic Shane Geschiere have announced they're interested in the leadership. Coyne is the mother of Justin Trudeau's half-sister, Sarah.MPs Marc Garneau and Dominic LeBlanc are known to have leadership ambitions, but will have to evaluate their chances now that Trudeau is

entering the ring.Garneau was not commenting about his potential leadership bid Wednesday.LeBlanc, who is the son of former governor general and Liberal cabinet minister Roméo LeBlanc, is expected to reveal his intentions later next week.LeBlanc and Trudeau are longtime friends, dating back to their fathers' close relationship. On his way into caucus Wednesday morning, LeBlanc said Trudeau's candidacy would not affect their friendship.Other Liberals said to be mulling over the decision to take the plunge include Ottawa MP David McGuinty, and former MPs Martin Cauchon, Gerard Kennedy, Mark Holland and Martha Hall Findlay, as well as former local candidates David Bertschi and Taleeb

Justin Trudeau To Run For Liberal Leadership

Woman Pleads Guilty To Stabbing PuppyA 22-year-old woman has pleaded guilty in a court on Queensland's Gold Coast to stabbing her pet puppy.Samara Jane McKay stabbed her five-month-old dog Kobi in the neck after returning home from a drinking session to find the pup had ripped washing from the line. McKay had consumed three bottles of wine and stabbed the dog three times in the neck with a 20-centimetre kitchen

knife. The shepherd-cross collie pup survived and police charged the Reedy Creek woman with one count of animal cruelty. It can carry a $10,000 fine or a two-year jail term. Police say McKay knew her actions towards the defenseless pup were unlawful and cruel. The dog has since been rehoused.

Noormohamed, and Toronto lawyer George Takach.7th leader in 9 yearsNDP Leader Tom Mulcair didn't have much to say about Trudeau's expected entry into the Liberal leadership race."I'll let the Liberals start to take care of their own business," Mulcair said. "Remember that the person who wins eventually this Liberal leadership race will be their seventh leader in nine years. I think they have enough things to sort out and I'll leave them to take care of their business."Interim Liberal Leader Bob Rae said he didn't know whether Trudeau would run and hadn't spoken to him about it."You'll have to ask him," Rae said."I have a job to do to keep things together as we go through this leadership

process. I'm sure there will be other candidates coming forward and we'll just have to see what happens."Veteran MPs expressed enthusiasm for Trudeau's bid Wednesday morning. But Toronto MP Judy Sgro said it wasn't a foregone conclusion Trudeau will win."There are several very interesting people that are going to be running," Sgro said."He's a young man. He's got lots to learn just as you do and I do."New rules and format for raceAnother Montreal MP, former cabinet minister Denis Coderre, wouldn't rule out his own leadership ambitions, but said Trudeau adds a "dose of dynamism" to the race. He said he doesn't think Trudeau's candidacy will discourage other candidates from running."We need to have a real campaign this time, not a coronation," Coderre said."I think we're going to have a very strong number of serious people," said the Liberals' deputy leader Ralph Goodale.Liberals announced the rules governing the leadership race earlier this month, including strict spending and debt limits.Several candidates from the 2006 Liberal leadership race are still struggling to pay off their debts. The next Liberal leader will not be chosen by delegates at a convention. For the first time, not only card-carrying party members, but also a new category of party "supporters" will cast votes. The party hopes the change in format will inject new enthusiasm and strength into the party, now in third place in the House of Commons.

One-in-Four Canadians Say Harper is Worst Prime Minister Since 1968More than a third of respondents believe Pierre Trudeau is the best recent head of government. While Pierre Trudeau is still regarded as the best Prime Minister of Canada since 1968, animosity towards the current head of the federal government has grown markedly since last year, a new Angus Reid Public Opinion poll has found. In the online survey of a representative national sample of 1,510 Canadian adults, 36 per cent of respondents think Trudeau has been the best Canadian Prime Minister since 1968. Stephen Harper is second on the list with 16 per cent—down three points since 2011—

followed by Jean Chrétien with 11 per cent, and Brian Mulroney with five per cent.Trudeau is well regarded by respondents in Atlantic Canada (46%), Ontario (42%) and British Columba (38%), while Harper is the most popular choice for Albertans (32%). Respondents who voted for the Liberal Party (57%) or the New Democratic Party (NDP) (48%) in the last federal election select Trudeau as their first choice, while those who backed the Conservatives (42%) pick Harper. In every Angus Reid Public Opinion poll conducted on this topic since

2007, Trudeau has been supported by at least a third of Canadians in the Best Prime Minister question. Mulroney has dropped nine percentage points in five years. The biggest change observed since 2011 is in the second question. One-in-four Canadians (26%, +7) think Harper has been Canada’s Worst Prime Minister since 1968. Mulroney is a distant second with 17 per cent, followed by Trudeau (11%) and Chrétien (9%).Harper is judged to be the worst recent head of government by more than a third of Atlantic Canadians (40%) and Quebecers (36%), as well as 26 per

cent of British Columbians. Trudeau fares poorly in Alberta (21%), and Mulroney has a negative showing in Atlantic Canada, British Columbia and Ontario. While one-in-four respondents who voted for the Conservative Party in last year’s federal election (25%) think Trudeau has been the worst recent Prime Minister, Canadians who voted for opposition parties all select Harper as their top choice, including three-in-five Green Party voters (59%), almost half of NDP voters (47%) and more than a third of Bloc Québécois (37%) and Liberal (36%) voters.

Minister's Email To Gay Community Sparks Privacy ComplaintsJason Kenney's office says email sent to people who had written to immigration minister

An email titled "LGBT Refugees from Iran" that was sent from Immigration Minister Jason Kenney's MP office has raised concerns about whether the private information of Canadians may be used for partisan purposes. But although she finds reports of the email "troubling", the federal privacy commissioner's office says she doesn't have jurisdiction over what politicians do. People who make their political views public using online petitions or other forums run the risk that information may be used in ways they don't expect.Last Friday, members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community were sent an email from Kenney extolling the government's handling of cases of lesbian and gay refugees from Iran. Some of the recipients are wondering how Kenney knew to target them based on their sexual orientation or interest in LGBT issues."I just thought, 'My God, this is complete propaganda, how did he get my email? What the heck is going on here?'" said Datejie Green, who is from Toronto. The email touted what Kenney called his government's strong record of defending gay and lesbian rights around the world. Jason Kenney's mass email to gay and lesbian CanadiansUnsolicited message came from immigration minister's MP office From: <[email protected]>Date: Fri, Sep 21, 2012 at 2:23 PMSubject: LGBT Refugees from IranFriends,Last Friday, my colleague John Baird, Minister of Foreign Affairs, spoke in great detail about Canada's principled foreign policy, including our efforts to promote basic freedoms around the world, and to take a stand against the persecution of gays and lesbians, and against the marginalization of women in many societies. I made similar remarks in my speech last November to the global conference of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, where I raised the particular plight of gay and lesbian refugees. As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I believe that Canada should always be a place of refuge for those who truly need our protection. That is why we

continue to welcome those fleeing persecution, which oftentimes includes certain death, including on the basis of sexual orientation. We are proud of the emphasis our Conservative Government has placed on gay and lesbian refugee protection, which is without precedent in Canada's immigration history. We have increased the resettlement of gay refugees living abroad as part of our refugee programs. In particular, we have taken the lead in helping gay refugees who have fled often violent persecution in Iran to begin new, safe lives in Canada. We are also helping community groups like the Rainbow Refugee Committee to sponsor gay refugees for resettlement to Canada. Please click on the web-links below for more information. I would appreciate hearing your thoughts.Sincerely,Hon. Jason Kenney, PC, MPCalgary Southeastwww.JasonKenney.ca

"This is scary. This is actually really scary," Green said. "I wasn't just disturbed, I was frightened, because they're clearly stockpiling lists of particular constituencies of Canadians, for their propaganda." Green, who is a health researcher, is also upset that the government is trying to "pinkwash" its activities — making them sound more gay and lesbian friendly than they really are. She points to Kenney's recent cuts

to refugee health programs, which she says have taken a direct toll on LGBT refugees who often need trauma counselling and basic medical care. Several other Canadians also expressed anger about Kenney's missive on social media sites like Facebook. Privacy concerns over personal data collectionRandall Garrison, the NDP critic for LGBT issues, told reporters after Monday's question period that if a clear explanation doesn't come from Kenney's office, his party may make a formal complaint with federal Privacy Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart. "I think there's a serious privacy question here when the minister is obviously touching on a subject that's very sensitive to many people and connecting up sexual orientation with individual names and addresses," Garrison said. "I think we need a full explanation of how he put together that list."Political parties fall outside the privacy laws, yet they amass huge amounts of highly personal information about citizens, including how they vote, their age, religious and ethnic backgrounds, and other details.Stoddart has warned that Canadians have no legal rights when it comes to personal information collected by parties and held in databases for partisan use. A spokesperson for the privacy commissioner's office calls the case "troubling," but added there is little they can do."Please note that, from the information

we have available on this at this time (including your email), our office does not appear to have jurisdiction in this matter," wrote Stoddart's communication director, Anne Marie Hayden, in an email to CBC News. "Our office does not have jurisdiction over political parties under either the Privacy Act or the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA)."Green has lodged a complaint with the privacy commissioner.Email addresses may originate with online petitionKenney's spokesperson said Monday the email was a "response to individuals who have communicated with our office about gay refugee issues."Green says she never communicated with Kenney's office but she did sign an online petition at Change.org which generated an automatic email from her email account addressed to "Jason Kenney and the Department of Citizenship & Immigration Canada."A senior source in Kenney's office said Tuesday the government did not mine petitions or other forms of mass communication to get the emails of LGBT Canadians. The source said everyone on the email list had written to the immigration minister in an email to his MP's office: the same address from which Friday's message was sent. The source said it's possible some people signed an online letter campaign that automatically generates an email from the recipient's email address. "If you wrote to us on an issue we wrote you back," the source said. "We didn't go out proactively looking for people's email addresses."Green insists the petition was directed at Kenney in his role as minister because it was about a deportation, and she says Kenney's office never wrote her back about her deportation concern.Treasury Board guidelines for information sharing in the federal government stipulate that a minister cannot use personal information that is sent to him in his capacity as minister for MP or party purposes.Meanwhile, the petition site Change.org states in its privacy policy: "Please do not post any personal information in any public forum of Change.org which you expect to remain private, including, but not limited to, any personal information and/or campaign activity information."

People who received emails from Immigration Minister Jason Kenney's MP office are asking how Kenney or his staff knew about the recipients' sexual

orientation or interest in lesbian and gay issues.

Hair Masks For Your Hair Type

Regardless of your hair’s texture, the use of a hair mask will always benefit your beauty regimen. There are many hair masks and conditioners out in the market right now, each catering to different hair types. But did you know that the less chemicals you put in your hair, the better the results will be? Many women prefer to use natural hair masks – those made from ingredients found in their own kitchens. Here are some ideas for do-it-yourself natural hair masks that are tailored for your hair type.1. Dry, Unmanageable HairIf you have dry, damaged hair, this can be caused by several salon treatments, or frequent exposure to the sun. Whichever the cause, dry hair makes your hair frizzy and unmanageable. To get back that healthy sheen, egg-based hair masks are highly recommended. Eggs are high in protein, and these proteins are the best strengthener for your hair follicles.Beat two eggs together and add four tablespoons of olive oil. Massage this through your hair. Cover your head in plastic wrap, and leave the mixture on for 15 minutes. Remove the plastic wrap and wash your hair with regular shampoo. Do this 2-3 times a week to regain your hair’s healthy shine.2. Anti-Frizz Hair MaskHealthy curls are gorgeous, but not if they come with a big frizz-control problem. For curly hair that needs a little taming, honey-based hair masks are your best bet.Just mix together a tablespoon of pure honey in a liter of water. After shampooing, apply the honey-water mixture on your hair. Do this a couple of times per week, and the result is

sexy, bouncy curls without the frizz.3. Dandruff ControlEspecially during the dry season, dandruff can be quite a problem. Not only is the itchiness inconvenient and uncomfortable, but dandruff is also an embarrassing problem. To treat dandruff, you should keep your scalp moisturized. One of the best ways to do this is using an olive oil treatment.Mix together equal amounts of olive oil and almond oil. Massage this mixture through your hair and scalp, and leave it on for 15 minutes. Rinse your hair thoroughly. Repeat this treatment regularly to eliminate dandruff problems. 4. For Oily HairIf your hair is always oily and greasy, it lacks the proper nutrients to maintain the right pH balance. A yogurt hair mask is very effective in restoring this balance.Simply mix together a cup of yogurt and a whole egg. Alcohol And PregnancyPregnant women are strongly urged not to drink alcohol during pregnancy.

Drinking alcohol while you are pregnant has been shown to cause harm to a baby inside the womb and may lead to long-term medical problems in the child after birth. When a pregnant woman drinks alcohol, the alcohol travels through her blood and into the baby's blood, tissues, and organs. That means when a pregnant mom has a glass of wine, her baby has a glass of wine, too. Drinking alcohol can harm the baby's development. Alcohol breaks down much more slowly in the baby's body than in an adult. That means the baby's blood alcohol level remains increased longer than the mother's. This is very dangerous, and can sometimes lead to lifelong damage.

Dangers of Alcohol During Pregnancy

Drinking a lot of alcohol during pregnancy can lead to fetal alcohol syndrome in the baby. Fetal alcohol syndrome refers to a group of birth defects found in children born to mothers who drink too much alcohol. Symptoms can include:• Behavior and attention problems • Heart defects • Changes in the shape of the face • Poor growth before and after birth • Poor muscle tone and problems

with movement and balance • Problems with thinking and speech • Learning problemsThese medical problems are lifelong and can range from mild to severe. Complications seen in the infant may include:• Cerebral palsy • Premature delivery • Miscarriage or stillbirth

How Much Alcohol is Dangerous? There is no known "safe" amount of alcohol use during pregnancy. Alcohol use appears to be the most harmful during the first 3 months of pregnancy; however, drinking alcohol anytime during pregnancy can be harmful.Alcohol includes beer, wine, wine

coolers, and liquor. One drink is defined as:• 12 oz of beer • 5 oz of wine • 1.5 oz of liquorHow much you drink is just as important as how often you drink.• Even if you don't drink often,

drinking a large amount at one time can be quite harmful to the baby.

• Binge drinking (5 or more drinks on one occasion) greatly increases a baby's risk of alcohol-related damage.

• Drinking moderate amounts of alcohol when pregnant may lead to miscarriage.

• Heavy drinkers (those who drink more than 2 alcoholic beverages a day) are at greater risk of giving birth to a child with fetal alcohol syndrome.

• The more you drink, the more you raise your baby's risk for harm.

Do Not Drink During PregnancyWomen who are pregnant or who are trying to get pregnant should avoid drinking any amount of alcohol. The only way to prevent fetal alcohol syndrome is to not drink alcohol during pregnancy. If you did not know you were pregnant and drank alcohol, stop drinking as soon as you find out. While it is unlikely that the occasional drink you took before finding out you were pregnant will harm your baby, the sooner you stop drinking alcohol, the healthier your baby will be.Try replacing alcoholic drinks with their nonalcoholic counterparts: for example, you might opt for a nonalcoholic pina colada instead of the real thing. If you cannot control your drinking, avoid eating or drinking around people who are drinking alcohol. Pregnant women with alcoholism should join an alcohol abuse rehabilitation program and be checked closely by a health care provider throughout pregnancy.

Healthy Eating

Continued Next Week

What about medication?High blood pressure affects approximately a quarter of Canadian adults. Many people require medication to control their blood pressure. Lifestyle modification, which includes healthy eating and regular physical activity, may be the only treatment needed in those with mild high blood pressure. In those that require medication to control their blood pressure, following a healthy lifestyle may reduce the need for, or the amount of, medication required. What next?A full healthy lifestyle, including healthy eating, is part of the Canadian recommendations for the management of high blood pressure. The Heart and Stroke Foundation is involved in developing blood pressure guidelines, which are updated every year. To control your blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease, the guidelines recommend that you: • Be active 30 to 60 minutes most

days of the week. • Choose the following more often:

vegetables, fruit, low-fat dairy products, foods low in saturated and trans fat and salt, whole grains and fish, poultry and lean meat. Limit fast foods, canned or prepared foods, as they usually contain high levels of sodium.

• If you are overweight, losing about 10 lb (5 kg) will lower your blood pressure. Reducing your weight to within a healthy range for your age and gender will lower your blood pressure even more.

• Eat less salt by: • limiting your use of salt in cooking

and at the table • avoiding salty foods • choosing fresh or frozen food • avoiding canned or prepared foods

that are high in salt • reading the Nutrition Facts table on

food packages for sodium content • using other seasonings such as

herbs, spices, lemon juice and garlic during food preparation

• If you drink alcohol, limit yourself to no more than 2 drinks a day, to a weekly maximum of 10 for women and 3 drinks a day to a weekly maximum of 15 for men. (Do not drink when you are driving a vehicle, taking medications or other drugs that interact with alcohol, pregnant or are planning to be pregnant, making important

decisions, doing any kind of dangerous physical activity, living with alcohol dependence or mental or physical health problems, or responsible for the safety of others. If you are concerned about how drinking may affect your health, talk to your doctor.)

• Be smoke-free. It is important to stop smoking if you have high blood pressure. Smoking increases the risk of developing heart problems and other diseases. Your home and workplace should also be smoke-free.

• Take your medication as prescribed.

• Monitor your blood pressure regularly.

Changing your diet means a life-long commitment to healthier lifestyle choices. People who make small changes in their diet over a longer period of time, rather than a dramatic change all at once, are more likely to stay committed to a healthier diet.If you are considering starting on the DASH diet, discuss it with your healthcare provider first. How much salt? The Heart and Stroke Foundation recommends Canadians consume no more than 2,300 mg of sodium (about 1 teaspoon/5 mL of table salt) a day in food preparation and at the table. The amount of salt you eat isn’t just what you shake onto your food – it is already added in large quantities to prepared foods, canned products, snack foods and restaurant meals. To more information about Canada's Food Guide, go to Health Canada's website or call Health Canada at 1-800-O-Canada (1 800 622-6232) or TTY: 1 800 926-9105.Easy ways to get started on the DASH dietChange gradually• If you now eat one or two vegetables

a day, add another serving at lunch and dinner.

• If you don’t eat fruit now or have only juice at breakfast, add a serving to your meals or have it as a snack.

Treat meat as one part of the whole meal, instead of the main focus. • Limit meat and alternatives to

about 6 oz (170 g) a day, over two meals (two servings). Each serving is about the size of a deck of cards or the palm of your hand.

Choose fruit or low-fat foods as

desserts and snacks. • Fruit and low-fat foods offer great

taste and variety. Fresh fruit require little or no preparation. Dried fruit is easy to carry with you.

Eating outCanadians, it seems, love to eat out often. By making wise choices, you may not only treat yourself to some special dishes, but you also ensure that your restaurant meals fit into your overall heart-healthy eating plan. When eating out, you're still in charge of what you eat even though you're not doing the cooking. More and more restaurants today are happy to accommodate individual preferences, so feel free to ask questions about how a dish is cooked or to make requests, such as asking for salad dressing on the side or having a baked potato instead of French fries. (You'll still want to avoid loading up your potato with sour cream, butter and bacon bits.) A steady diet of excess fat, calories and salt may increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. Many restaurant chains now post nutrition information on menus or on their websites consistent with the Nutrition Facts table on packaged foods.Restaurants that are part of the Health Check™ program offer menu items that meet specific nutrient criteria developed by the Foundation’s registered dietitians. The items that meet the Health Check criteria are easily identified on the menu with the Health Check logo. For more information, go to healthcheck.org.AppetizersIf you're going out for dinner, make sure you eat lunch or you may be too hungry to make healthy choices. At the restaurant, opt for a whole-grain offering from the breadbasket as opposed to higher-fat, buttery garlic bread. Appetizers tend to be very high in fat and calories, so choose a vegetable-based soup or a dark, leafy green salad with dressing on the side, instead of the deep-fried calamari or the creamy crab dip. Heart-healthy choicesWhen you see the words baked, barbecued, broiled, charbroiled, grilled, poached, roasted, steamed or stir-fried, it most likely means the food is cooked with little or no fat and therefore a healthy choice.Take a pass

When you see the words Alfredo sauce, au gratin, cheese sauce, battered, breaded, buttered, creamed, crispy, deep-fried, en croute, fried, hollandaise, pan-fried, pastry, prime, rich, sauteed, scalloped, gravy, mayonnaise, thick sauce, it usually means that the food is higher in fat and calories. Similarly, foods that are pickled, smoked, or are served with soy sauce mean that the food is higher in sodium. (Ask for sodium-reduced soy sauce.)Portion sizesPortion sizes in restaurants are often large, so share or take half of your meal home for tomorrow’s lunch or dinner. Read more about Canada’s Food Guide recommended portion sizes. DessertsKeep dessert light and simple, such as fresh fruit with sherbet. If you can't resist a rich dessert, indulge occasionally or share it with your tablemates. Dietary fats, oils and cholesterolYou need a small amount of fat in your diet for healthy functioning. Oils and fats supply calories and essential fats and help your body absorb fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E and K. The type of fat consumed is as important for health as the total amount consumed. That's why it's important to choose healthier unsaturated fats. Eating too much and the wrong kinds of fats, such as saturated and trans fats, may raise unhealthy LDL cholesterol and lower healthy HDL cholesterol. This imbalance can increase your risk of high blood pressure, narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis), heart attack and stroke.Canada's Food Guide recommends that you include a small amount – 30 to 45 mL (2 to 3 tablespoons) – of unsaturated fat each day (also known as mono- and polyunsaturated fat). Make sure the oil you use in cooking, salad dressings, soft non-hydrogenated margarine and mayonnaise contain mono- and polyunsaturated fats such as olive, soybean, canola or peanut oils.Get the facts about margarine and butter. Monounsaturated fatsThese have been shown to improve blood cholesterol levels. They're found in olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil, non-hydrogenated margarine, avocados and some nuts such as almonds, pistachios, cashews, pecans and hazelnuts.

Ways To Save On A Small IncomeI didn't earn much for several years, but I always managed to put money away. The big thing to remember is how much you have going out vs. how much is coming in, and not to live beyond your means. The big thing for me was to separate my needs from wants. When my friends were buying rims and stereo systems for their cars, I was maxing out a Roth IRA. The same thing goes for clothes, entertainment, etc. Have nice clothes for work, a dependable car, a have a good time, but don't go overboard. The ideas for earning side income were also good. Keep your eyes open for opportunities! :) And finally, the advice ended with the long (17 suggestions!) but well-thought-out and valuable comment that follows:1) Housing is the biggest cost; share your rental house/apartment with one or more roommates. The money they contribute to your housing costs can be saved for an emergency fund. My husband and I did this while we were graduate students and while there is a decrease in privacy, you don't have to allocate such a large portion of your income to housing costs.2) Buy everything second hand. Everything. Furniture, clothes, shoes, cooking utensils. Thrift stores are utilized more heavily now than when we were students but it is still possible to get stuff that you can wear, use and sit on. Try and get family to give you their old, extra pieces of furniture for free. Don't bother to buy any nice furniture until you have assets. Don't buy too much furniture until you have your own house; you'll just end up selling the stuff or lugging it all to the new place.3) Save 25% of your income. It can be done. You won't be going to bars on a regular basis but if you learn to cook, BBQ and have pot luck social affairs, you can decrease your entertainment and food costs which if I remember my student days, were fairly high. Start small, and move up to the 25%

amount. Place this money in your RRSP (retirement funds) or another account that you cannot access easily and forget about it. Pretend it doesn't exist and you won't be tempted to pillage it. I did this while I was a twenty something and the money I saved in the forgotten account became my 50% down payment on my first house.4) Don't follow the crowd. Don't spend like the crowd and don't take on debt like the crowd. The only debt that makes sense is a house mortgage but only after you have a 25% down payment, are committed to living in the house buying area for a decade and that you aggressively pay off within ten years. Debt is a waste of your income and should be viewed as EVIL. The current practice of taking on debt to fuel investment is sustainable only if the current bubble market in real estate persists and you are able to off load a hefty house mortgage onto someone else in the future at a profit. Otherwise, I don't see houses as investments: they are simply a place to live in and a liability if you don't have cash funds available to pay them off fast.5) Don't shop for recreation. You just accumulate stuff. It is far more useful to shop for continuing education or other assets such as a rental property. Spend the money you would on Walmart junk on more education. Or travel experiences. Or real life experiences. Buying stuff is not a useful way to invest your income.6) To build up a cash position quickly, get a second job for a certain period of time. Work in retail or sales on weekends. Just get some money in and stash it.7) It is not that difficult to save money if you are determined. If you don't have the determination, no one can give you the right set of tips to get you to save. You have to decide to "just do it".8) Don't drive a brand new car. If you can get a decent second hand car and check insurance rates. Try to use the public transit system as much as you can.

9) Don't think deprivation; think control. By saving money, you are being wise with your resources. Every time you look around and see your savings flushing money down the toilet, think assets not depreciating product purchases. It is possible to have a happy life without buying a lot of stuff, working yourself to death and following the scripts of our upbringing. Money is important but it isn't as important as life.10) We use our credit card (one) to buy all our groceries, non-food purchases and gasoline for our car; we get PC points back that we use for decreasing our food bill. But we don't carry a balance. We have money in the bank before we charge anything. With large purchases (over $200) we wait for at least a month before we decided to buy and only when we have researched the product. We only buy a product if we can't get it secondhand or if it is a computer related product. We never carry a credit card balance and paying interest is simply a poor use of our limited resources. For high end product purchases - such as a new home purchase, take your time before you buy. We waited five years. Yes, we paid more for our house but we got the house we wanted in the area we wanted. Could we have bought a starter house and then resold and made money and bought the second house? Yes. But we were saddled with debt from student loans, a rental house mortgage and my husband was just starting out in his second career. We waited. We paid off our debt. We deferred gratification. I did not make money in the real estate market, but I still have my house. And all our other debts are paid off. Financially, we are in a stronger position than if we had gone the first house, second house route.11) I follow our expenses monthly tracking them with our credit card statements. If expenses appear to be going too high, I cut back. Savings must always be much higher than expenses.

12) I sweat the small stuff. I make my coffee at home. I pack lunches. I don't buy the kids everything they want and I do say "NO". I show our boys the expenses for maintaining our household and the income flow in. They learn that there is money available for whatever they desire but we choose not to spend like our friends. Sad for them, but good for our net worth.13) Take a small portion of savings and do get maximal returns on that cash: go for a trip, buy the computer, have a family reunion. Saving money to leave to the kids is not in our plan. Our plan is to be self reliant, independent and ensure that our kids have the education, skills and mindset to be high earners and not dependent on their parents. I think it makes good sense for people to get the maximal return for their work time. If you aren't earning as much as you can in the work you are enjoying then it is always a good policy to review this state of affairs and try to maximize earnings in your field. Still can't get more money? Learn new skills that will bring more money in. Low earners, as we learned from our own experiences, just do not have a chance to accumulate assets. Their earnings go towards survival requirements. Thus, we will be encouraging our kids to go into high income generating areas that they have an interest in. 14) Change jobs judiciously to increase your income and skills. Try and get good benefits. Be brave. Members of our family took risks and started businesses. They are well rewarded for their efforts. If your first career doesn't provide you with a good standard of living and skill set - change it. Go back to school and do it over again. Just don't debt yourself into slavery. There are tons of scholarships, grants and if you cannot get an education freely in this manner - work and build up an education reserve so you can pay for the second career education. And if your employer can pay for you to do this - do it.

ColoringTips for Helping Your Child Fall

Asleep

1. Avoid feeding your child big meals close to bedtime, and don't give her anything containing caffeine less than six hours before bedtime.2. After dinner, avoid all stimulating activities, says Carol L. Rosen, M.D., medical director of pediatric sleep services.3. Warn your child that bedtime is in five minutes, or give him a choice -- "Do you want to go to bed now or in five minutes?" -- but do this only once.4. Establish a consistent and relaxing bedtime routine that lasts between 20 and 30 minutes and ends in your child's bedroom. Avoid scary stories or TV shows. It's better to read a favorite book every night than a new one because it's

familiar.5. Avoid singing or rocking your child to sleep, because if she wakes in the middle of the night she may need you to sing or rock her back to sleep -- a condition known as sleep-onset association disorder. (If you have already been doing this, try to phase this behavior out gradually.) Instead, have her get used to falling asleep with a transitional object, like a favorite blanket or stuffed animal.6. Make sure your child is comfortable. Clothes and blankets should not restrict movement, and the bedroom temperature shouldn't be too warm or too cold.7. If your child calls for you after you've left his room, wait a few moments before responding. This will remind him that he should be asleep, and it'll give him the chance to soothe himself and even fall back asleep while he is waiting for you.8. If your child comes out of her room after you've put her to bed, walk her back and gently but firmly remind her that it's bedtime.9. Give your child tools to overcome his worries. These can include a flashlight, a spray bottle filled with "monster spray," or a large stuffed animal to "protect" him.10. Set up a reward system. Each night your child goes to bed on time and stays there all night, she gets a star. After three stars, give her a prize.

How To Protect Kids This Flu Season

Doctors at a Medical Center have offered some tips on how to protect kids this flu season. The flu is an infection of the nose, throat and lungs caused by a variety of strains of influenza viruses. While the flu typically causes mild symptoms, it can be severe enough to cause hospitalization or even death. Flu most commonly occurs in the winter and early spring. While the best way to prevent the seasonal flu is to get vaccinated. Children's doctors and Pediatrics give the following tips on how to stop the spread of flu germs: 1. Cough and sneeze into a tissue. If you don't have time to get a tissue, bend your arm and sneeze or cough into it. Teach your children to do the same.2. Use tissues for wiping runny noses and catching sneezes. Throw the tissues in the trash after each use. Wear a mask if you are coughing or sneezing frequently.3. Avoid kissing your child on or

around the mouth or face when either of you are ill.4. Make sure everyone washes their hands before and after coming into close contact with someone with the flu. Everyone should wash their hands with soap and warm water for at least 15 seconds (about as long as one verse of Happy Birthday). You may also use a waterless hand cleaner in addition to hand washing or if soap and water are not available.5. Don't let children share pacifiers, cups, spoons, forks, washcloths, or towels. Never share toothbrushes.6. Wash dishes, forks, cups and spoons in hot, soapy water or the dishwasher.7. Change cloth towels often and wash them in hot water.8. Wipe all surfaces, including toys, with a disinfectant or soap and hot water.9. Keep children, particularly infants, away from secondhand tobacco smoke. Children who are exposed to tobacco smoke have an increased risk for respiratory illness.

Pneumonia – Inflammation Of The Lungs

Pneumonia is an acute or chronic inflammation of lung tissue, which affects the alveoli and lung structure (lung tissue). There are different forms: infectious forms and non-infectious forms.• Lobar pneumonia : affects the

lung lobes, particularly affecting children.

• Broncho pneumonia : begins with the bronchi and lung tissue extends.

• Interstitial pneumonia : affects lung structure.

• Opportunistic pneumonia : affects people with weakened immune systems (people with AIDS, chemotherapy).

• The bedridden pneumonia : bedridden patients with heart failure, this form of pneumonia is due to a constant bed rest and poor ventilation of the lungs.

• Pleuropneumonia : when the inflammation also affects the pleura.

Pneumonia Risk groups :• Elderly and debilitated. • Patients with chronic heart disease. • Diabetic patients. • Alcoholics, heavy smokers, people

with weakened immune systems. • Children with chronic diseases.Pneumonia CausesPneumonia Infectious form:• Bacteria (pneumococci,

mycoplasma), viruses, fungi, chlamydia

Pneumonia Noninfectious form:• Allergens or chemical-physical

factors, drugs

• Inhalation poisons • Inhalation of gastric fluid or other

liquidsPneumonia Disorders (symptoms)Classic bacterial pneumonia:• High fever, headache, aching

limbs, chills. • Dry cough and expectoration of

mucus (green, yellow, brown or red).

• Chest pain influenced by respiration (in case of infringement of the pleura).

• Blue lips and fingers (lack of oxygen), asthma attacks may worsen.

• Vascular disorders • Smelly breath • If symptoms persist and worsen,

hospitalization is necessary.Pneumonia Examinations

(Diagnosis)• History taking into account the

patient’s symptoms • Auscultation of the lungs • Chest radiographs • Salivary and blood tests to identify

the pathogenPneumonia Treatment OptionsPhysical rest is not far-essential drug.Pneumonia should almost always be treated with antibiotics. Treatment can be done at home as the patient feels relatively well. By cons, if severe symptoms occur, hospitalization is necessary. The duration of antibiotic treatment depends on the germ and the disease severity.

Low Calorie Cranberry Juice May Help Cut BP

Drinking low-calorie cranberry juice regularly may help get your blood pressure under control, suggest new findings.

In a study that measured the effects of drinking low-calorie cranberry juice, participants drank either low-calorie juice or a placebo drink every day for eight weeks as part of a controlled diet.Blood pressure was measured at the beginning, mid-point and end of the study. After eight weeks, blood pressure values had significantly dropped from

an average of 121/73 mmHg to 118/70 mmHg for those drinking the low-calorie cranberry juice. The placebo group showed no change.Researchers noted that cranberry juice is rich in antioxidants - naturally occurring molecules in fruit, tea, wine and other foods - which have been associated with lower blood pressure in other studies.

Soaking In Bath Of Salt Water Could Ease Agony Of Arthritis

Scientists have a simple way to battle the agony of arthritis - soaking in a bath of salt water.

They say the saline solution reduces painful inflammation of the joints.Even ordinary table salt in high concentrations can be used and, unlike conventional drugs, there are no unpleasant side effects."This research opens up exciting opportunities. What we've identified has the potential to be used to help so many patients," the Daily Express quoted Vincent Compan, of Manchester University's Faculty of Life Sciences, as saying.Dr Compan and Dr Pablo Pelegrin found cells in the bodies of arthritis sufferers expand but salt water can reduce the swelling by dehydrating them. The salt worked the same

whether it was injected into the body or absorbed through the skin via bandages soaked in saline or bathing."We have found that hypotonic solutions (low in salt) strongly activate inflammation at molecular level. Conversely, the use of hypertonic solutions (high in salt) was a potent inhibitor of such inflammatory signals at molecular level," Dr Pelegrin said."Therefore, osmotherapy (dehydration) with hypertonic solutions could be beneficial in the management of inflammatory joint diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, either by prolonged soaking or by vapour pressure techniques," he noted.

Extreme Heat, Cold Can Trigger Fatal Heart Attacks

Extremes of temperatures during heat waves or cold spells could trigger premature deaths from heart attacks, according to a new study by Australian

researchers. The findings are important because of how the body responds to temperate extremes, the growing obesity trend and the Earth's climate changes.Exposure to extreme temperatures can trigger changes in blood pressure, blood thickness, cholesterol and heart rate, according to previous research. The study is the first in which researchers examined the link between daily average temperature and "years of life lost" due to cardiovascular disease (CVD).Years of life lost measures premature death by estimating years of life lost according to average life expectancy, according to a QUT statement. With increasing rates of obesity and related conditions, including diabetes,

more people will be vulnerable to extreme temperatures and that could increase the future disease burden of extreme temperatures. This might be because people become exhausted due to the sustained strain on their cardiovascular systems without relief, or health systems become overstretched and ambulances take longer to reach emergency cases. We suspect that people take better protective actions during prolonged cold weather, which might be why we did not find as great a risk of CVD during cold spells.Spending a few hours daily in a temperate environment can help reduce heat- and cold-related illnesses and deaths.

'Chewing Betel Leaf May Help Fight Cancer'

Chewing 'paan' or betel leaf could help fight a form of bone marrow cancer, a group of Indian researchers say.

A molecule derived from betel leaf may be beneficial to patients suffering from a cancer in which the bone marrow makes too many white blood cells and the body refuses to respond to common drugs, said a study by scientists in Kolkata and Mumbai. An alcoholic extract of the betel leaves helps patients suffering from chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) -- the most common form of leukaemia in adults in India -- holding out hope of improved treatment. The research was carried out by the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB), the Institute of Haematology and Transfusion Medicine, Kolkata, and Piramal Life Sciences, Mumbai. "We have conducted a study and seen that the compound hydroxychavicol (HCH) is the major component of the alcoholic extract of the betel leaves and it might contribute, at least in part, to the observed anti-CML activity of the leaf extract," Santu Bandyopadhyay of the department of Cancer Biology and Inflammatory Disorders at IICB, an institute under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, told us. According to the study, published this year in the Cancer Science journal - the official journal of the Japanese Cancer Association - HCH and its analogues not only induced killing of

the cancerous CML cells but also led to the death of the drug-resistant cancer cells with minimal harm to normal human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). PBMC are blood cells that are an important component of the immune system. CML is principally an adult disease with a yearly incidence of one in 100,000 in India. Men are affected more often than women. The slow-progressing blood and bone marrow disease usually occurs during or after the middle age, and rarely occurs in children. The leukaemia cells can build up in the blood and bone marrow. So there is less room for healthy white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. When this happens, infection, anaemia or easy bleeding may occur. So far, the drug imatinib has been used successfully to treat CML, but mutations have made the leukaemic cells unresponsive to the medicine. None of the available approved drugs has been effective in dodging the responsible mutation - called T315I. According to the report in Frontiers in Bioscience (Elite Edition), the alcoholic extract of paan leaves causes the imatinib-resistant cells to undergo a self-destructive process called apoptosis.

Loud Music, Earphones Lead To Hearing Loss

It's an all too familiar sight these days - people, mostly youngsters, with earphones on, listening to music on their i-Pods or mobile phones. The constant exposure to high decibel sounds, however, may be doing more harm than good

and can even lead progressively to hearing impairment, doctors warn. What's more, it may be a few years until you realise the hearing loss since it grows over a period of time.Listening to loud music over long durations on your i-Pod or mobile phone can lead to hearing loss. It is a serious issue because it's progressive and it may be a few years before you realise the effect. Moreover, people adapt to such kind of loss over a period of time; so you don't realise immediately, until it becomes obvious.Roughly seven percent of Indians suffer from some kind of hearing impairment. In a normal conversation, we are exposed to 40-50 decibel sound, which has no harmful effect. However, if the sound level goes beyond 80 decibels for a constant period of even two-three hours, the hearing ability will drop.If the magnitude of sound is high, then even a few hours of exposure is enough to cause you harm. Ninety decibels for four hours is risky and so is two hours of 100 decibel sound. In airports, the magnitude of sound is 120 decibels; so people working there have to wear ear protection devices. If a person is exposed to industry noise, high frequency sounds, for 30 years, then there is a possibility of nerve damage and that cannot be repaired. But if a person is exposed to loud music, like a DJ, for say, 10 years, and

goes for regular check-ups, and then complains of hearing loss, then that is something that can be managed. So it really depends on the extent of damage. While music-induced hearing loss is a major concern, industry workers, engineers, pilots, those who work in airports and DJs, among others, are exposed to threats of hearing impairment every day, thanks to their profession. Therefore, earplugs in such professions are a must. But even then, I would advice such people, and others, to go for regular check-ups.Considering the initial dormant nature of the problem, doctors advise one to be on the lookout for warning signs of possible hearing impairment.Do you have a ringing or buzzing sound in your ears in quiet surroundings and it disappears after some time? Do you have to concentrate hard to catch words in a conversation? In a meeting, or while with friends in a public place, do you find it hard to hear full sentences? Your replies could indicate if you need to see a doctor. And hearing impairment has nothing to do with age; so don't hesitate to seek help if you feel the need. So, the next time you turn up the volume of your i-Pod to blank out the surrounding noises, think again - you may be blanking out something much more vital.New 'Sars-Like' Coronavirus

Identified A new respiratory illness similar to the Sars virus that spread globally in 2003 and killed hundreds of people has been identified in a man who is being treated in Britain. The 49-year-old man, who was transferred to a London hospital by air ambulance from Qatar, is the second person confirmed with the coronavirus. The first case was a patient in Saudi Arabia who has since died.Officials are still determining what threat the new virus may pose. The World Health Organization has not recommended any travel restrictions.Prof John Watson, head of the respiratory diseases department at the UK's Health Protection Agency, said: "In the light of the severity of the illness that has been identified in the two confirmed cases, immediate steps have been taken to ensure that people who have been in contact with the UK case have not been infected, and there is no evidence to suggest that they have.

"Further information about these cases is being developed for healthcare workers in the UK, as well as advice to help maintain increased vigilance for this virus."He said there was no specific evidence of the virus spreading from person to person and he had no advice for the public or returning travellers.Peter Openshaw, director of the Centre for Respiratory Infection at Imperial College London, told Reuters that at this stage the novel virus looked unlikely to prove a concern, and may well only have been identified due to sophisticated testing techniques. And Prof John Oxford, a virology expert at Queen Mary, University of London, said he felt "somewhat relaxed" about the news. "Sars was very quick off the mark infecting hospital staff etc and this new virus does not to me appear to be in the same 'big bang' group."Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses which includes ones that cause

the common cold and Sars (severe acute respiratory syndrome). This new virus is different from any coronaviruses that have previously been identified in humans. There have been a small number of other cases of serious respiratory illness in the Middle East in the past three months, one of whom was treated in the UK but has since died. This person's illness is also being investigated, although there is no evidence as yet to suggest that it is

caused by the same virus or linked to the current case. No other confirmed cases have been identified to date in the UK. Sars is a serious respiratory infection that caused a global outbreak in 2002, spreading from Hong Kong to more than 30 different countries around the world and killing around 800 people. Although it has not been eradicated its spread was fully contained in 2003. Like other coronaviruses, it is spread through droplets of body fluids - produced by sneezing and coughing.

Top Newcomers On The Bollywood BlockWhile Khans and Kapoors of Bollywood are still making waves with one hit after another, a fresh crop of new faces is slowly making its way to the big bad world of Bollywood. Will they succeed? If we look at some of the recent hit films like Barfi, Ishaqzaade, Jannat 2, Jism 2 and Vicky They all have one thing in common - a newcomer. Arjun Kapoor, Esha Gupta, Sunny Leone, Ileana D'Cruz and Ayushmann Khurrana even got critical acclaim for their performances. The trend is definitely catching up as a spate of newbies are ready to enter the Bollywood boulevard in the coming months.Director Mahesh Bhatt recently said in an interview: "Film-making is all about ideas. And if you have a unique story idea, it will get positive responses, irrespective of the star cast of the film."“The way I perceive it, investing in newcomers is not a risk. They are the future of our industry and if we can sell a unique idea along with their talent, there is no question of the movie not performing well,” he added.Preity Zinta who's making a comeback with Ishkq in Paris said she initially wanted to cast only newcomers in the film."We never wanted an established star for the film. As a producer I had first decided we will make it as a small budget film when we were developing our script; one day Prem told me I have to be part of it. I refused. Later, I thought about it and agreed," she said. For Karan Johar, directing three newcomers in his next directorial venture Student of the Year was an emotional journey. He told the media: "This film is very different from the earlier ones. I have worked with movie stars and they don't need hand holding. With these three newcomers I was nurturing, parenting them. It was an emotional journey."Here's a look at the hot entrants

in Bollywood: ALIA BHATT:

Alia Bhatt, 19, daughter of Mahesh Bhatt and Soni Razdan, is all set for a Bollywood debut with Student of the

Year (SOTY) and wants to play a long innings in showbiz. "I don't want to be a one-film wonder and then be re-launched after many years," she said."It's too soon to tell if I am able to create an impression. I need to wait for another five to six films," she adds."My decision after college was to study acting, but when the film happened, I said why not learn on the film. There is no plan B. If someone asks me what I would do if I can't succeed as an actor, I would say work harder, because there is nothing else I can do," she said.RHEHAN MALLIEK: Gaurav Chanana aka Rhehan Malliek is best known as Dr Rahul from hit telly serial Sanjeevani. He's now chasing his Bollywood dreams. The actor is debuting as a main lead with Preity Zinta in Ishkq in Paris. He also starred in music album Chamak cham cham chamake hai sitaro me tu hi with Rimi Sen.The actor has also done bit roles in Woh Tera Naam Tha, Zinda and Kajraare.VARUN DHAWAN: He is the son of director David Dhawan and student of veteran director Karan Johar. Everyone can enjoy it, no matter who they are or where they are from. I knew that if I have to do something, I will do it on my own. I wanted to show this to my family too. I have taken very less help."ATHIYA SHETTY: Suniel Shetty's little girl has grown up. She is reportedly set to make her Bollywood debut with none other than Jackie Shroff's son Tiger. The newcomer has another film in

his kitty. Siddhant is reportedly doing Anurag Kashyap's Ugly. He would be playing a dark character embroiled in drugs.TAMANNAAH BHATIA:

Tamannah Bhatia is already an established actress down south. She has done successful movies like Padikathavan (2009), Ayan (2009), Paiyaa (2010) and Siruthai (2011). The actress is now ready to start her Bollywood innings opposite Ajay Devgan in Himmatwala. She would be reprising the role of Sridevi in the remake of the 1983 hit film of the same name starring Jeetendra and Sridevi.BILAL AMROHI: The grandson of legendary filmmaker Kamaal Amrohi, Bilal, is reportedly making debut with Salman Khan's home production. The film is also likely to feature Pulkit Samrat.SIDDHARTH MALHOTRA: He started out as a model in Delhi and assisted Karan Johar in My Name Is Khan. He's now ready to face the camera with two other newcomers in Student of the Year."It has not been an easy journey. I started my career with modeling and then worked with Karan as an assistant director. At that time I had never imagined that he will cast me as a lead actor in his movie," he had told reporters at an event."I have nothing to fall back on, for them (Alia and Varun) they can take guidance from there parents but I can't even discuss anything with my parents as they know nothing about the industry. I have to work harder and be more attentive because I don't have an option. So it does make it tougher," he added.TIGER SHROFF: Jackie Shroff's son Tiger would be making his entry in Bollywood with Sajid Nadiadwala's Heropanti. Shroff Junior plays a ruffian from a small North Indian town. The role reportedly requires loads of

action and dancing. Tiger confirms this. The excited debutant said. "The action and dance are a big part of the script. I've been training really hard for those. And I don't need to unlearn those skills. But yes, there are a lot of new things I need to learn for the role." "I will be spending a month in the town chosen for shooting. Fortunately for me, I've never had any formal acting training before. So they can mould me any way they want for the character. I am already training to be in character," Tiger said.

POONAM PANDEY: The bikini sensation is making her Bollywood debut with Jism director Amit Saxena's yet-to-be-titled film. Poonam claims it's a coming-of-an movie. The film will have bold scenes shot in an aesthetic way."It's going to change people's mindset. It will change the way people think about Bollywood. It's radically different from the way films are being made here. I would say, it's not a normal story of a-boy-meets-girl-and-they-fall-in-love genre. It's a very different story," Poonam told the media."The bold scenes are shot in a very classy way. If I'm there, there is bound to be exposure. I have stepped into glam business with a bold image so why would I shy away from doing hot scenes in Bollywood," she added.

Rani Pays Tribute To Favourites

In her upcoming film Aiyyaa, Rani Mukherji will fulfil a long-standing desire. She will pay tribute to three leading ladies of the ’90s — Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla. In the film, Rani will don Sridevi’s look from Na Jaane Kahan Se (ChaalBaaz, 1989), Madhuri’s Dhak Dhak avatar (Beta, 1992) and Juhi’s style from Gazab Ka Hai Din (Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, 1989). All three actors,

who were the faces of cinema in the ’90s, are Rani’s favourites. She looks up to them and has grown up watching them and even enacting their moves and styles. Aiyyaa is a story of a Marathi girl, Meenakshi Deshpande (Rani), who falls in love with a Tamil artist Surya (Prithviraj Sukumaran). It is a quirky love story and has the Marathi-Tamil cultural clash as its backdrop.

Nana Patekar’s New Soft Side

But what has brought about this change?Nana Patekar is known for his eccentricity and short temper. So it comes as a surprise when news filtered in about him being a wonderfully co-operative person on the sets of Priyadarshan’s ‘Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal’. We also heard that he

actually tried to bond over biryanis and fish with the rest of the crew. Shreyas Talpade is the lucky recipient of Nana’s rare affection. He says, “Kaka (that’s how he refers to Nana) looks at me like his son-in-law and he’s very protective about Dipti (Shreyas’ wife). He will love you but also shout at you. Nana wanted me to perform a few sequences in a particular manner. So he asked me to show him how I would enact the scenes. Though I wasn’t ready to show him at that moment, Nana insisted and I had no choice but to do it. You just can’t say no to him. He is very authoritative.” Shreyas says Nana may sound rough but he means good, “Initially everyone was tense on the sets, worried if he will lose his temper. He realised that people were stressed because of him, so he started dancing, joking and cooking for us.” Nonetheless one can’t forget the tales of him supposedly hitting then girlfriend Manisha Koirala on the sets of ‘Agnisakshi’ and several other instances of his temper tantrums. But if he has genuinely changed, then good for him.

At The MoviesWon't Back Down (G) * * *

Mom's Know Best! by ROBERT WALDMANPerfect timing to kick off the school year comes Won't Back Down. Titles count in the movies and 20th Century Fox hits the bull's eye in this searing drama inspired by true events. Over time films about the school experience have come and gone. Classics like The Blackboard Jungle and To Sir With Love have scored well among legions of fans. With Won't Back Down we have the telling tale of two determined women who go against the system to make things better for their kids. All Jamie Fitzpatrick wants is a fair shake for her young daughter. Top draw Maggie Gyllenhall play fast and loose as a mom who will go all out to save her daugher. Too bad for her the school she's her kid's at happens to be Adams Elementary,an education insitution that just doesn't seem to care. Many parents with school age kids across North America can relate to her

plight. While Jamie tries to "shake" things up an instructor at the school is having her own problems. Nona Roberts is one of those tried and true troopers who is having difficulties with domestic duties. Somehow these two women with different backgrounds unite and take on the establishment. True to form, Won't Back Down is an emotional rollercoaster with solid performances. This film effectively deals with some of the problems facing schools and the dilemma folks calling for change face. It's David vs. Goliath all over again as Gyllenhaal and Davis rally the troops and square off against a host of special interests trying to protect their turf and the children be damned. A top supporting cast bolsters this heartbreaker of a film full of pain and struggle. Many other social issues are encountered in this smartly developed from director .Daniel Barnz.

The Inhabited Out Islands: The Abaco Islands Andros Island The Berry Islands The Biminis Cat Island Crooked Island Eleuthera The Exumas Harbour Island The Inaguas Long Island San Salvador Mayaguana. This is the land of the treasure hunter, scuba diver, beachcomber, explorer and hiker. It’s where the old world ends and the new one begins, a land of emerald seas, snow-white sands and mysterious blue holes, where you can wander deserted beaches for hours on end and never set eyes on another living soul. Although there are no shopping malls, night clubs, casinos or any of the other major attractions that lure visitors to the two main islands of the Bahamas, life goes on here much as it has for more than 300 years, quietly, unchanged. These are the islands of romance where couples can leave the bustling mainland and all its distractions behind. Sunshine, warm breezes, tropical drinks, soft music and solitude make for an unforgettable experience. If, after a week together here in the Out Islands, you don’t get to know one another intimately, you never will.Dotted around the Out Islands are a dozen or so resorts (some more deserving of the title than others) and perhaps five times as many small hotels and B&Bs. Accommodations run the gamut from Spartan to delightful and almost luxurious. Don’t expect all the modern conveniences here: telephones and televisions are rarities.

Air-conditioning is available almost everywhere, but be sure you confirm before you book. The absence of climate control in your room, if you’re not prepared for it, can be a vacation breaker. Upscale restaurants and fine dining, as we know them, are the exception rather than the rule, but these islands do boast of some of the best little holes in the wall I’ve ever come across. The atmosphere in these sometimes raunchy little cafés and restaurants, and the often outrageous local cuisine, makes eating out an experience to remember. But even those who like fine dining and a good bottle of wine will find opportunities to indulge. The Romora Bay Club on Harbour Island is one; the Green Turtle Club on Green Turtle Cay in the Abacos is another.Adventures on land and sea abound in the Out Islands. Most of them, though, require a modicum of self-organization. Throughout the following pages you’ll find references to beaches, dive sites, snorkeling, bicycling and walking opportunities. Very few of these activities, with the exception of scuba diving, can be formally structured. A good map and the ability to make friends with the locals – local knowledge can produce golden opportunities – is all you need. Hotel employees are also a good source for local secrets. Other than that, you’ll need to head out on your own and see what you can find.Beyond the Out Islands, far to the south, lie the Turks and Caicos Islands. These are not a part of the Bahamas per se, but they are a part of the Bahamian archipelago and an increasingly popular destination for Americans, Canadians and Europeans. So, it seems only right that we give them coverage in these pages. Most people have heard of Nassau, some have heard of Freeport and Grand

Bahama, but very few have heard of the Out Islands. If you really want to get away from life in the fast lane, enjoy a few quiet days in the sun on some of the most beautiful and unspoiled beaches in the world, the opportunities offered by the Out Islands are almost limitless. With rare exceptions, hotel standards in the Bahamas are not what you get on the US mainland, or in Europe. Due to the fact that almost everything has to be imported, and is therefore expensive, there is a definite trend to put off until tomorrow what should be done today. Hotels that might have been considered fairly upscale five years ago can quickly become slightly seedy as time and weather take their toll. Don’t expect too much, especially in the Out Islands and Turks and Caicos. But don’t let a little inconvenience spoil your vacation.Getting There:For visitors arriving by air, the Bahamas are served through Nassau by most US airlines and by international airlines from Canada and Europe, and to a slightly more limited degree through Freeport. The Out Islands are served mainly by Bahamas Air via connections in Nassau and Freeport. How to Get ThereBoth Nassau and Freeport are major US and international gateways. Dozens of airlines regularly fly between the islands and Europe, Canada and various US terminals, including most major cities such as New York, Chicago, Boston and Atlanta; and locations in Florida. 2013 Chrysler 200 Chrysler gave its Dodge Avenger and closely related Chrysler 200 (formerly Sebring) sedans a much-needed refresh a couple of years ago, but despite a memorable ad campaign with Eminem, the car was mostly a case of too little, too late. The overwrought styling, low-buck interiors, busy ride, and a general lack of refinement of the original cars were merely served to show how they should have been a few years earlier. As they continue into 2013--for one more year before being replaced by all-new models--these sedans stand as bargain-priced, relative to other mid-sizers, but not entirely competitive with respect to styling, features, or fuel economy.Although the 200 looks dated on the outside, it feels up to Volkswagen standards on the inside and it includes materials and finishes that are a world better than the old hard plastics. Likewise, Chrysler has doubled up on insulation to make the 200's interior a very quiet place (except for the coarse four-cylinder engine's note), and softened the ride. While handling and ride quality might still not be its forte, the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and six-speed automatic is a strong, refined combination and the base four-cylinder and six-speed automatic is a tolerable combo; just stay away from the base four-speed automatic in the LX. The silhouette of the 2013 Chrysler 200 has a way of tricking you into thinking the cabin is somewhat small for a mid-size sedan--and the combination of the tall dash, wide seats, and narrower glass areas add to that visual 'trick'--but once you climb in you'll be a convert; whether by the numbers or from inside, the 200 stacks up really well against segment leaders like the Hyundai Sonata. Even in back, there's enough space for two adults, or three in a pinch, although the high beltline

might require some Dramamine. The Chrysler 200 is missing some of the active-safety features now offered in other mid-size sedans, yet it's a safe, secure pick, with top ratings from both the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and federal government.Equipment for the base LX model is generous, but it still doesn't include Bluetooth hands-free calling connectivity. Audio systems come with an auxiliary input jack, but base models also lack a USB input or iPod control. Mid-level Touring sedans offer the V-6 as optional and add automatic climate control, a Homelink garage door opener, a power driver seat, and satellite radio. A sunroof is an option, as is Bluetooth and a DVD/hard-drive audio system with 28GB of storage. At the top of the lineup is the leather-lined Limited model, with options on that include navigation with live traffic and voice commands, plus Boston Acoustics premium sound. For 2013, Chrysler allows more buyers to get the special look of the 200S by offering it as an 'S' package rather than as a separate model. Three different S packages dress up the LX, Touring, and Limited models to include 18-inch polished painted wheels, a black finish grille, fog lamp bezels, projector fog lamps, black headlamps, and a black Chrysler badge. The 2013 Chrysler 200 remains also offered in two-door Convertible form, offering the same two engines but with somewhat different equipment levels. These models, while a mainstay in rental-car fleets, are reasonably good picks for those who want a convertible on a tight budget and plan to cruise but don't need a vehicle that feels sporty. Back-seat space and trunk space in 200 Convertibles, whether you go for the hardtop or softtop, are better than in most other drop-tops.

Get Savvy With Your Smart Phone And Avoid Fraud

The rise in popularity of smart phones with social media applications can put consumers at risk of fraud. The Province, Consumer Protection BC, and the Better Business Bureau are teaming up during Fraud Prevention Month to provide tips to help British Columbians get smart about their smart phone usage. According to a recent study by Javelin Research and Strategy, 32% of all smart phone users don’t have the most current version of their operating system, 62% don’t use a password to protect their home screens and 32% save login information on their phones. Here is a typical user scenario: Samantha carries her smart phone with her everywhere. She runs all of her favourite social networks from her phone and it’s loaded up with all of the latest apps, including one app that allows her to do all of her banking on the go. Samantha also keeps all of her personal information on her smart phone so that it is handy – phone numbers, addresses, birthdates and even passwords. One day Samantha leaves her phone on the bus. Not only is Samantha’s personal information now available to any stranger who picks up her phone, she is now a potential victim of fraud and identify theft. Here are some tips to protect you and your family and become smart phone savvy: · Get the latest operating system for your phone so your security is up-to-date. · Add a password to your phone for access, so if it is lost a person does not

have access to your phone and your personal identifiers. · Password-protect everything, preferably with unique passwords for each social media service.· Look for ‘remote wiping’ programs in the user manual for your smart phone so in case of loss you can remove and destroy all data from your phone from a remote location.· Check applications for geo-tagging that allows you to “tag” a photo or video with their current location. You can turn this “tagging” option off in applications if you feel uncomfortable broadcasting your location publically. · Don’t do your banking over public Wi-Fi networks to avoid risk of financial loss. · Be sure all the apps you download come from legitimate vendors. Check user reviews and learn about what the application needs to access on your smart phone. For example: If a wallpaper need access to your contact list, there probably is a virus attached to the application. · Start with Trust when dealing with businesses and companies you’ve never heard of by researching them at www.mbc.bbb.org.· To stay informed about possible scams and to warn others:- Visit Consumer Protection BC on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/ConsumerProtectionBC- Report any fraudulent activity to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by calling 1 888 495-8501.

Hindi Push In The UNOn August 15, 1947, at the stroke of midnight, India won her freedom from the British Raj. Independent India needed a new constitution and on September 14, 1949 the constituent assembly also declared that Hindi would be the official language of India. Since then plans and projects began to be prepared for its development. Later, it was decided by Hindi lovers of India and of overseas that September 14 be observed as Hindi Divas, Hindi Day.As this language has earned now an international status, it is called World Hindi Day and it is commemorated, not only in India, but in all those countries where Indians have migrated and settled permanently. In Fiji, some schools, both primary and secondary, and Hindi departments of all the three universities organise celebrations every year in September but they fix their own dates according to their convenience. For example, this year University of the South Pacific had its program on the 14th, Fiji National University will do it on the 27th and University of Fiji on the 29th.The Indian government and many other overseas organisations are trying to promote this language all over the world. One of the steps they have taken has been to organise conferences in different parts of the world. Mauritius, Great Britain, Trinidad, Surinam and a few other countries have already done their share. This has not been the case in Fiji.South Africa hosted it this year on September 24-26.The statistics prepared by some organisations show that Hindi now is the second most spoken language of the world but it has not yet become one of the United Nations' languages. The six UN languages are English, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese and Arabic.

Indian lobbyists are still knocking on the UN's doors that Hindi be recognised as its seventh official language. The interesting aspect of this struggle is that the eighth World Hindi conference was held at UN Headquarters in one of its halls. Its Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon did the opening. In his inaugural speech, he said: “Hindi is a beautiful language, redolent with culture and history of the Indian sub-continent. . . Your conference theme, Hindi at the world cannot only focus attention on the growing stature of Hindi, and of India, across the world, but also advance Hindi as a language of understanding and harmony."After all, as India's national language, Hindi has been building bridges between Indians of different ethnic backgrounds and linguistic traditions since well before independence. Today, it unites not only a vast and varied Indian diaspora, but also Bollywood fans from Ukraine to Uganda, and Egypt to England . . ."But Hindi has not yet been recognised as seventh official language of the UN and the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, says that Indian government is working hard towards achieving that objective.Hindi is a very wide subject and all its aspects cannot be condensed in this small article but some of the readers might be interested to know how it traveled to Fiji. It was spoken for the first time on the shores of Fiji when the Indian indentured labourers stepped out of the ship, Leonidas on May 14, 1879 on Yanuca Lailai, a place near Levuka. This pioneer ship was followed by Berar, Poonah, Bayard, Syria and 82 more ships which brought over 60,000 Indians to Fiji.By the beginning of the 20th century, the Indian population was speaking

different regional languages.Majority of them came from Bihar and UP (Uttar Pradesh). In 1903, labourers from south India started arriving. They spoke Tamil, Telgu and Malayalam whereas the north Indians used different dialects of Hindi.First in the immigration depots, then on the ships and later in the cane fields and the barracks, called "lines", they found it difficult to understand each other. The people from UP and Bihar, who were greater in number, spoke Bhojpuri, Awadhi.Almost all the indentured labourers were from rural areas of India. They were simple and uneducated and could not even sometimes express themselves effectively in their own dialects. All these people coming from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds faced the problem of communication. It was an amusing situation when a person, while living in the same settlement and working in the same field, was not able to talk to his co-workers who spoke a different dialect. At the time of cutting cane, digging drains, planting and weeding, he would use a few words but more gestures to communicate with his fellow worker. To all this was added another hurdle, the English-speaking overseer. All the workers were given numbers. The overseer, at the time of taking attendance in the morning, would call them by numbers, not by names. When the overseer appeared in the morning with attendance register in his hand, one worker would inform his co-worker, "be alert, kolumber has come". As they were not able to pronounce English words properly, overseers who called them by numbers became known as kolumber.Agreement became girmit. Gradually they coined their own versions of all the English words which their masters

used daily. Crowbar was distorted as kurbaal; cane-top — kuntaap; task — tas.Under these circumstances, a common Hindi dialect which could become their lingua franca was necessary for their co-existence in the new land of Fiji. The interactions and intermingling and rubbing each other's shoulders in the fields and lines produced "leveling effects". Although they retained their own religious faiths and values, they were not so fanatic. In the matter of language also, they became more flexible.Gradually a new dialect began to emerge. When a Muslim worker wanted to say yeh sardar hamain bara mushkal kaam deta hai, bhai (This sardar gives us a very difficult task, brother) he would say to his co-worker "ieh sardarva ham ko kara tas (task) daivay hai, bhaiyaa. This simple sentence of nine words contained an unusual combination of Bhojpuri, Urdu and English words but they sounded to be most communicative. The whole sentence provides an interesting example of interaction between languages. Indians during girmit era called it Fiji baat (Fiji talk). Later on, our new generations gave it a more dignified name — Fiji Hindi.* Jogindar Singh Kanwal is a former principal of Khalsa College, Ba and author of many Hindi and English books. He lives in Varadoli, Ba with his wife, Amarjit Kaur.*I was invited to attend this conference and my name was included in the list of those who were to be honoured in the conference to recognise my contribution to literature in Fiji but I was not able to make it. The authorities in Delhi advised the Indian High Commissioner in Fiji to organise a function in Fiji to complete the formalities which they were supposed to do in New York.

Henry Speight Becomes Australian Player

Brumbies Fijian-born winger Henry Speight has attained his Australian status and will be eligible to play for the Wallabies next year.Speight’s status changed last month after having completed his 3-year stay in Australia and thus will not be considered a foreign-contracted player. The 24-year-old was educated at Suva Grammar School where he played age-grade rugby before heading to New Zealand. He was spotted by Christian Lealiifano while playing for Waikato in the ITM Cup in 2010. Speight joined

as one of the Brumbies international imports. He was handed his big break in 2011 when he made his debut on the wing in week one against the Chiefs going on to become a revelation and a star for the Australian Capital franchise.Speight’s foreign import spot has been taken up by giant South African and Lions lock Etienne Oosthuizen. At just 19 years of age, Oosthuizen is the youngest player on the Brumbies list, but is also the biggest at 198cm and 120kg.

Dewan Chand Bail Application Denied

Dewan Chand has been given time to appeal his 4-year jail term although he’s pending bail application was denied by the Labasa High Court.Chand appeared before Judge Justice Salesi Temo and was told he is given between now and his next High Court appearance to appeal his sentencing. He is due to appear next on October 23.

Chand was sentenced to four years imprisonment on September 12 after he was found guilty of defilement and indecent charges. He will be eligible for parole after serving three years and six months.Meanwhile, Fiji FA in its next Board of Control meeting is expected to make a decision who will be Chand’s successor.

NHL, Players To Resume Labour Talks Friday

Sides won't discuss revenue splittingWhen the NHL and the NHL Players Association meet Friday in New York, it will have to be a pretty large venue to incorporate the elephant in the room. The two sides will put aside the biggest, toughest issue -- how to split up the $3.3 billion in league revenue -- and focus on the other issues that will have to ultimately be resolved to craft a new collective bargaining agreement."We are going to re-engage on some of the other issues. We have crafted an agenda of items that we hope will produce progress and some agreements that may aid the overall process," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said in an email."Until the (NHLPA) moves on the economics though, we won't be in a position to make a deal."A request for comment from the NHLPA was not returned. Not that things like free agency, arbitration rights, entry-level contracts, player safety, supplemental discipline, working conditions, pensions, drug testing, the future of the NHL in the Olympics and the question of who owns the game (as far as realignment, schedule and playoff format go) are going to be easily resolved, either. The fact of the matter is, how the basic question of splitting up the revenues is answered could have an effect on free agency, arbitration and entry-level contracts and vice versa. If the two sides could find a way to put a drag on salaries for players moving from the entry-level system to their second contracts -- we saw the big deals guys like Taylor Hall of the Edmonton Oilers and Tyler Seguin of the Boston Bruins received recently; Hall got a seven-year deal worth $6 million a year-- then that, perhaps, could slow the overall commitment owners have to make to salaries and affect how the salary cap is structured.Same thing with arbitration and free agency. If it takes, say, eight, nine or 10 years, rather than a possible seven, for a player to become an unrestricted free agent, then that might slow salary growth as well and affect the big picture. The two sides are stuck in their current trenches when it comes to the basic

philosophy of how to move forward on economics. The owners want a salary cut (from 57% of revenues to 49, to start with) while the players want increases of 2, 4 and 6% over the next three years while allowing the owners to keep whatever percentage of the growth in the business is above those thresholds. The respective positions are non-starters for both sides at this point, but its good they're going to be talking. In the meantime, the NHL lockout ranks second in newsworthiness behind the NFL's lockout of its on-field officials, at least in the minds of those but the most diehard hockey fans. The two labour disputes -- and the heavy-handed and oh-so-predictable tactics of Edmonton Oilers owner Daryl Katz in his battle with the city of Edmonton over a new rink -- are doing nothing to change people's perception that pro sports owners are becoming increasingly greedy and more ruthless, as if that is possible. They seemed to all collide Monday night at the NFL's debacle in Seattle in which the Seahawks were handed a victory over the Green Bay Packers on a blown call by the replacement officials on the last play of the game. Katz and other Oilers brass were visiting the city, which has plans for a new arena. It was a blatant ploy by Katz to put pressure on Edmonton city council to bend to his demands. No, it hasn't been a good week for the image of professional sports franchise owners. And that's saying something.

Fiji FA Selectors To Keep Tabs On Talents USA's Mohammed Aiyub tries to find his way past the Canadian defense at Prince Charles Park in Nadi The Fiji Football Association national selectors will be eyeing for talents during the five-day FANCA Muslim soccer tournament in Nadi.Fiji FA national coaching director Juan Carlos Buzzetti together with national technical director Farouk Janeman will be keeping tabs on players who could be part of the national squad and Fiji under-20 team. The FANCA tournament kicked-off at Prince Charles Park in Nadi Wednesday with Fiji, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and America featuring in a round robin format.Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel said with the dual citizenship now in place, players with Fiji heritage residing overseas could qualify for the various national sides.Meanwhile, a heavy downpour did not dampen the spirits of the players, fans and officials prior to the official opening.

Chief guest His Excellency the President of Fiji Ratu Epeli Nailatikau acknowledged the humble beginning of the FANCA tournament in 1995 in Canada during his opening address.Ratu Epeli said sports tournaments of such nature provided the platform to identify and nurture hidden talents."The FANCA tournaments have continued to grow, bringing former Fiji residents from the five different nations together every two years," Ratu Epeli said."Sports tournaments like this could provide the platform to identify and nurture hidden talents. We could very well have among us today some exceptional players who could progress to great heights in the world of sports, bringing personal satisfaction, professional development, fame and glory, and perhaps, depending on the sport you play, some wealth as well.""I have no doubt that the FANCA tournaments are organised along these same principles and more."I understand that apart from soccer,

there will also be golf and volleyball including seniors as well. This is very good because it reflects inclusively."Fiji has assembled the best players from all over the country and while I appreciate this because it reflects the seriousness with which they hold the tournament. I have to say that I am

here today not just to cheer for Fiji, but to cheer for all the other teams that are represented."In an Over-35 match, Canada defeated America 2-0.Today at 6.45pm Australia will take on America while at 8pm Fiji will face Canada.
