PM Warns On Food ThreatPrime Minister Voreqe Bainimaramaays there is one factor threatening ourood security over which we have noontrol whatsoever.

He said this was “the increasing frequencyand intensity of the natural disasters weare experiencing in the Pacic that arebeing attributed to climate change.”He was delivering the country statementafter he received the Achievement Awardn Rome from the United Nations Food

and Agriculture Organisation. He wasaddressing delegates to the FAO conference. The award was in recognition forts commitment to one of the UN

Millennium Development Goals – toeduce global hunger and develop foodecurity.

He said natural disasters caused bylimate change were already having “a

grave impact on Fiji and other Pacicsland nations,”

But we are also facing a terribleollective threat from rising sea levelsaused by global warming. And this is

already having a serious impact on islandnations, with much worse to come.In Fiji – a string of mainly mountainousslands – we are already having to moventire villages, are losing precious arableand and have identied more than 600ommunities that are directly threatened

by the encroaching seas.Yet in the case of three of our neighbours

    – Kiribati, Tuvalu and the Marshallslands, which are low lying atolls – thehreat is existential. And under the current

scenarios being advanced by climatescientists, these sovereign members ofthe United Nations are destined to sink

beneath the waves altogether in thelifetimes of their young people.“The rising seas caused by the meltingicecaps constitute the gravest collectivethreat to Pacic Small Island DevelopingStates in the entire sweep of history. Andunless this process is arrested, it is certainto compound the dire consequencesextreme weather events are alreadyhaving on our overall food security andability to feed our people.“To focus global attention on this crisis,Fiji intends to play a lead role at theWorld Climate Summit in Paris at theend of November. And with the otherSmall Island Developing States, we will

be calling for immediate action on the part of the developed nations to sign up

to the binding cuts in carbon emissithat are vital to avert catastrophe.“I have branded those nations that dragging their feet on climate changemembers of the “coalition of the sel

     – nations putting the health of theconomies and the jobs of their work

before the very survival of the citizenSmall Island Developing States.“The time for prevarication is over. Ttime for action is now. And I appeayou all and the rest of the internatiocommunity to join our alternat“coalition for action on climate changBecause we are at ve minutes midnight on this issue and time is rapirunning out. We have the chance acommunity of nations to stop the cloin Paris and start winding it back. Awe must seize that opportunity beforis too late.”

Online FraudSOME locals have been gatheringondential information of unsuspecting

persons and passing them to theiroverseas counterparts who then hacknto bank accounts in Fiji.

Police chief of intelligence and investigations,ACP Henry Brown said the growing issue ofphishing was a security concern.Phishing is the attempt to acquireensitive information such as usernames,

passwords, and credit card details —and sometimes money — often formalicious reasons, by masqueradingas a trustworthy entity in an electronicommunication.

Mr Brown said in a recent case, localsallegedly acted as third parties to aperson overseas that required money as

a form of cash deposit before they wereable to claim their prize money.

"It is alleged the victim provided detailsof the bank account which was hacked

by the overseas party," he said."The locals involved allegedly alsocolluded to get the nancial information

of other parties under the cover of helpingthe original recipient of the prize moneysend large sums of money overseas as theytried to beat the system and the permittedamount for sending money overseasthrough money transfers," Mr Brown said.He said while the Cybercrime Unitcontinued to receive reports — largelyto do with annoying persons or an attackon one's character through social media

     — there was a growing concern for theissue of phishing."Members of the public are being

requested not to divulge nancialinformation, particularly with people

they don't trust."Emails and other correspondences trequire one to send money or provinformation about their bank accouand other nancial statements should

be entertained."Mr Brown said those who receiemails or texts stating they had wo

prize requiring them to send particuof their nancial status was common"Such information can be used agayou and which is why people need tocautious about who you are dealing wespecially if it is from an unknown sour"The Fiji Police Force is working vclosely with the Financial IntelligeUnit to track down those who are

Hamilton, Thunder Bay Had Highest RateOf Hate Crime In Canada In 2013

The Ontario cities of Hamilton andThunder Bay had the highest rate of

eported hate crimes in 2013 in Canada,a new report says. The data, collected by the CanadianCentre for Justice Statistics for StatisticsCanada, show Thunder Bay had thehighest rate of reported crimes, at 20.9per 100,000 population, followed byHamilton with 17.4. In 2012, Hamiltonhad the highest rate at 23.2, followedby Thunder Bay with 16.6. The nationalaverage is 3.3 reported crimes per

00,000 people.Saint John, N.B., and St. John’s had theowest rate of reported hate crimes, at 0

and 0.5 per 100,000 respectively.More than half of all reported crimes in2013 were motivated by hatred of raceor ethnicity, according to the report. Ofhose racial hate crimes, 44 per cent – or

22 per cent – targeted black people.Over all, reported hate crimes were down

7 per cent due to a large decrease in non-violent crimes such as mischief, whichncludes hate grafti and the destruction

of religious property. Mischief still madeup the largest proportion of crimes, at 45per cent, followed by assault at 15 per

ent. Because the statistics are based oneported crimes, they do not capture the

full extent of hate crimes in Canada, thereport said. Although it is hard to know

what percentage goes unreported, aGeneral Social Survey on Victimizationin 2009 found about two-thirds of victimsin hate crimes do not report them.Apart from a few trends, the statisticsare hard to compare over time due toresponse rates by police departments. The 2013 data come so late in 2015

because of the time it takes to checkthem, according to Rebecca Kong, chiefof the policing services program at thecentre for justice statistics.“Because the numbers are relativelysmall … and sensitive, we take alot of care in ensuring all the policeservices who report hate crimes have anopportunity to review all of them,” Ms.Kong said.Chris Adams, executive ofcer of theThunder Bay Police Service, said thehigh numbers in his city are partly aresult of an effort to get people to reporthate crimes.“I think it reects the fact that more

people are coming forward, as well asour ofcers are utilizing the trainingthey’ve been given to recognize and

be able to investigate hate-motivatedcrimes more thoroughly,” he said.

He admitted it may also be that ThunBay has more hate crime.

“Certainly, being high in this yeastatistics, it puts us on the map anda concern. … It also says a lot abthe community we live in that thissues exist. They really do have toaddressed,” he said.Detective Carmen Pietroniro, who hethe hate crime unit at the Hamilton PoService, also said the numbers indicahigh reporting rate, rather than a hig

     proportion of hate crimes.

Hidden Toxic In Healthy FoodWhat happens when health food conceals within it, a bevy of unknown risk factors?

A normal day in the life of the averageurban adult begins at a sleepy 6 am, as heesolutely dons his tracks and sets out on

his morning walk. With the words 'health

ood', 'diet' and 'exercise' forming a majorpart of our existence, we are with orwithout our knowledge immersed in therend of leading a healthy life. And whent comes to dieting, it has become the onehing to supplement our food intake withruits and vegetables. However, whaties beneath these seemingly healthyoods could be unknown toxins whichould do more harm than good.

Take for instance, what accounts forhe roughage in our diet. Cruciferous

vegetables like cabbage, lettuce,Brussels sprouts and cauliower areknown to contain a chemical that isknown to suppress the activity of thehyroid gland and also interfere with theodine metabolism. However, accordingo a health consultant, these vegetables

do not contain toxins. "They containgoitrogens, which hinder the uptake ofodine by the thyroid gland. When theres a deciency of iodine in the diet, it

may lead to hypothyroidism. This may be prevented by using iodised salt.I broke out into a cold sweat andexperienced severe stomach pain at a

restaurant one day. It was only after Iwent to a doctor and cross-checked mysymptoms did I realise that I was allergicto tomatoes The bad news is that whilemost vegetables do not cause allergies, there are some common 'healthy'vegetables which are known to containallergy-causing toxins. These includeeggplant and bell peppers, both of whichcould be possible ingredients of yourafternoon sandwich.Sprouted green potatoes, similarly, have been known to contain alkaloids, chaconine and solanine, that cause mildforms of migraine and drowsiness.Eating veggies raw poses a bigger threatas there is a greater risk of contractinginfection through microbes such as E coliand Salmonella. Eating raw vegetablesthat have not been washed well andfruits that have been cut and exposed toies, puts us at risk of gastrointestinalinfections.

It's not just the veggies, fruits too loaded with hidden toxins! Apricand prunes cause osmotic diarrhoespecially among fructose-resist

people.Basic factors for toxicity incltemperature swings, low pH, low wacontent, low soil fertility and improstorage. Additionally, cheminsecticides and fertilisers are ato be blamed. Chemical sweetenlike aspartame, food colouracontaminated masala powders and emilk can alter everyday food. However, despite the alarming rthey pose, vegetables and fruit storehouses of vitamins, minerals anutrients, and contribute to buildantitoxins in our body. Additionathey are important in ghting diseasdue to the presence of phytochemicTherefore, to avoid eating thaltogether is not warranted. If you wary of eating something due to

presence of toxins, always take guidance of a qualied physician. Aall, prevention is better than cure.

How To Manage Your CholesterolExcess bad cholesterol can lead to heartdisease or stroke, so take into accounta few steps to manage your cholesterolevels.

A Nutritionist has shared her top tips on

how to keep your cholesterol levels inontrol. Superfruits: Following recent

nutritional studies, several fruits havebeen labelled 'superfoods' due to theirability to combat harmful fats andeduce bad cholesterol. For instance, it

    was recently revealed that strawberries

have the ability to reduce LDL, theharmful form of cholesterol, by nearly14 percent.* Unsaturated fats: Consuming omega-3essential fatty acids, found in unsaturated

fats, will help to lower the levels of badcholesterol in the blood. Unsaturatedfats include oily sh, nuts and seeds, ground ax seeds, olive oil and certainvegetables and fruits such as avocado.* Fibre: Beans, pulses, vegetables, cereal and whole grain breads all havea high fermentable bre content and are

therefore difcult for the gut to digesthey attach to bad cholesterol and tremove it from the body via waste.* Red wine: Red wine contains a plcompound called saponin which blo

Irritable Bowel Syndrome Linked To DietThe change in your bowel pattern or

abdominal pain has more to do withyour diet and balance of benecial andharmful gut bacteria than with yourmood, studies show.rritable bowel syndrome (IBS), an

umbrella term that refers to diarrhoea, discomfort, cramps, constipation, abdominal swelling (bloating) andpain, was believed to be a primarilypsychological condition for a long time.Contrary to this view, recent ndingsuggest that IBS is linked to clearly

    detectable gut microbiota (microbe

population living in our intestine)alterations. Additionally, bloating canbe related to specic kinds of diet, thusopening up promising paths towardsan efcient disease management,"

    said professor Giovanni Barbara of

University of Bologna in Italy.According to him, there is a lot ofevidence showing that IBS is associatedwith an imbalanced composition of thegut microbiota. This means that the system of checksand balances between benecial and

potentially harmful bacteria, whichcharacterises a healthy gut microbiota, isdisturbed in IBS patients."IBS symptoms develop in up to10 percent of previously healthysubjects after a single episode

of gastroenteritis caused by aninfection through bacterial pathogenslike Salmonella, Shighella orCampylobacter, which can severelydisrupt the microbiota balance,"

    said Barbara, who is also

president of the European Society Neurogastroenterology and Motili Not only infections, but also antibiotics that are used as a rememay increase the risk for IBS, as thtoo, can alter the gut microbiota inegative way, the studies showed.Researchers have now shown that forich in carbohydrates, particularly bmight lead to repeated bloating atulence in some individuals. The potentially negative impact of kind of nutrition applies in particula

individuals who already suffer from IB"On the other hand, we now know for sthat diets containing low ber contimprove these symptoms signicantBarbara said.

Boys vs. Girls: Who's Harder to Raise

Can we nally answer the greatparenting debate over which sex is morehallenging to raise?often say that I spend more time and energy

on my one boy than on my three girls. Othermothers of boys are quick to say the same.Forget that old poem about snips and snailsand puppy dog tails, says Sharon, a mom ofhree boys. Somehow it's been changed to

boys being made of "ghts, farts, and videogames,' and sometimes I'm not sure howmuch more I can take!"Not so fast, say moms of girls, who point

out that they have to contend with fussierashion sense, more prickly socialnavigations, and a far greater capacity tohold a grudge. And as a daughter grows,a parent's concerns range from bodymage to math bias.

Stereotyping, or large kernels of truth? "Ihink parents use 'which is harder?' as anxpression of whatever our frustrations at the moment," says family therapist

Michael. "Boys and girls are each hardern different ways."

Every child is an individual, of course. His or her innate personality helps

hape how life unfolds. Environmentincluding us, the nurturers) plays a role,oo: "There are differences in how we

handle boys and girls right from birth,"ays David, a professor of psychology. We tend to talk more softly to girls andhrow boys in the air."

But it's also true that each gender's brain, and growth, unfolds at a different rate, nuencing behavior. Some parents raise

girls and boys differently because girlsand boys are so different from birth --heir brains aren't wired the same way.

So, can we nally answer the greatparenting debate over which sex is more

challenging to raise? Much depends onwhat you're looking at, and when:DisciplineWho's harder? BoysWhy don't boys seem to listen? Turns outtheir hearing is not as good as girls' rightfrom birth, and this difference only getsgreater as kids get older. Girls' hearingis more sensitive in the frequency rangecritical to speech discrimination, and theverbal centers in their brains developmore quickly. That means a girl is likelyto respond better to discipline strategies

such as praise or warnings like "Don'tdo that" or "Use your words." Boys tendto be more tactile -- they may need to

be picked up and plunked in a time-outchair. They're also less verbal and moreimpulsive, which is especially evident inthe toddler and preschool years. These developmental differencescontribute to the mislabeling of normal

behavior as problematic, a growingnumber of observers say. Five boysfor every one girl are diagnosed with a"disorder" (including conduct disorder,

     bipolar disorder, hyperactivity, attention

decit disorder, sensory integrationdisorder, and oppositional deantdisorder). Some kids -- most often boys-- may simply fall on the more robust endof normal. They need more opportunitiesto expend energy and aggression, as wellas rmer limits.Physical safetyWho's harder? Boys"Much after-dinner wrestling here,"reports Michelle, mom of four boys, ages5 to 12. "I'm constantly ghting to keepmy house a home rather than an indoor

sports center. Their stuffed animals' primary function is to be added to the

pile of pillows everyone is launching ifrom the coffee table." In general, bare more rambunctious and aggressexperts say. Taking risks lights up

pleasure centers of their brains. M

parents nd they have to keep a cloeye on what a son is "getting into,"use more bandages. But letting kids explore -- at the cost ofew scrapes and cuts -- builds characself-condence, resilience, and sreliance. Boys, being natural risk takmay need encouragement to slow doa little, but maybe girls need to encouraged to take more risks. Look opportunities for your daughter to juoff a wall, swim in the deep end, orthe bigger slide.Communication

Who's harder? First boys, then girlsFrom birth, a girl baby tends to more interested in looking at coland textures, like those on the humface, while a boy baby is drawn mto movement, like a whirling mobThese differences play out in the wkids draw: Girls tend to use a rainbof hues to draw nouns, while boys ltoward blue, black, and silver for thmore verb-like pictures of vehiccrashing and wars.) In a nutshell, gare rigged to be people-oriented, boy

be action-oriented. Because girls stufaces so intently, they're better at readnonverbal signals, such as expressand tone of voice. Boys not only learntalk later than girls and use more limvocabularies, they also have mtrouble connecting feelings with wor"While most girls share their feelings details of events, my three sons honedon't see that as important. I spend days asking, 'What happened then?'What did he say after you said that?"Important note: Because boys hold contact for shorter periods than g

parents may worry about autism, since can be a red ag. It's a relief for momknow that this is normal and comes frthe way the brains are set up.As girls get to be 8 or so, things can harder: The ip side of being so adepcommunicating is that girls exert a loenergy on it. There can be a great deadrama around who's mad at whom, wsaid what and why, and more. Start wyour daughter's a toddler to establishopen communication, so she learns can come to you for advice.
