Figures of speech may be classified as under

Those based on the Resemblance such as Simile, Metaphor, Personification and Apostrophe.Those based on contrast such as Antithesis and Epigram.Those based on association such as Metonymy and Synecdoche.Those depending on construction such as Climax and Anticlimax.

A simile is a COMPARISON made between two objects of

different kinds which have however at least one point in

common.

An apostrophe is a direct address to the dead, to the absent or to a personified object.

In antithesis a striking opposition or contrast of words or

sentiments, is made in the same sentence.

The suggestion of vivid mental pictures or images by the skilful use of words is called imagery.A poet can create or suggest beautiful sight effects or sound effects by means of words.It often talks in pictures.
