For 15mm armies, "standard mounting" means 4 infantry on a 1.5" X 0.5" base, 3 cavalry on a 1.5" X 1"

base, and 1 gun plus gunners on a 1" X 1.5" base. Light infantry are mounted on half-sized 2-figure

bases. For Pike and shot, musketeers are mounted 3 on a stand, not 4.

For 25mm armies, standard basing means heavy infantry are 4 figures at 15mm frontage, missile troops

are 3 figures at 20mm frontage, and cavalry is 3 figures at 20mm frontage. There are of course all sorts

of make-change stands.

MY 1/72 WW2 and Microarmor collections are mostly single-based.

Feudals/Dark Ages

I used to have a large collection of 15mm Medievals, but I sold them all off years ago. Now all I've got

are three tiny units of Dark Ages type skirmishers. I've never used them. They are pretty well painted,

and I used a "glossy" blackwash technique which gives them a heavy black antique look, sort of like

lacquer. Someday I'll try to sell these off; 15mm is just not a good period for skirmish games.

Most of my AWI figures are Musket Miniatures; some are "New" Minifigs, some are from

manufacturers now out of business whose names escape me. My AWI's are based mostly on 1.5" X 0.5"

cheap. They make good "filler" cavalry. They are in blue and yellow coats with bicornes. Standard

"Age of Sail" Ships

I have not used my ships for a long time, but they bring back a lot of memories for me. I met Dave

Richmond, one of my closest friends, back in the early 1980's, playing this era. Dave is a naval fanatic

and has a much larger collection than me. He had just moved to Seattle, and fortunately we both loved

the Ship of the Line rules (and still do...). So we played a lot of battles with these little models, and one

abortive campaign that I tried to run.

The idea of the campaign was that several nations were trying to gain control of a set of ports in some

pseudo-Caribbean Sea. I remember the first turn, Dave lined all of his ships up about 20 miles apart –

just close enough that their topmasts were visible to each other, and scouted the entire map in two turns.

That drove me crazy, but it made perfect sense. it also taught me that a naval campaign is not like a land

campaign, and I had a lot more research to do to get a sea campaign set up properly!

All of these are Valiant 1:1200 scale, which I don't think you can get any more. They are reasonably

well painted, and have wire rigging helping to hold the masts in place. All are mounted on 0.75" X 1.5"

bases, to cover two standard squares on an SOL-gridded game surface.
