The Future looks Bright for Brunel Graduates A message from Jay Patel President of the Student Union London tops poll of Global University Cities For the second year running, London has topped the 2008 Global University City Index prepared by Australia’s RMIT University. The city retained its leading position ahead of Boston and Tokyo. The index assesses a range of criteria including liveability, education expenditure, the number of graduates present and how many tertiary institutions are ranked in the top 200 Times Higher World University Rankings. Brunel International has developed a brand new Orientation; a welcome programme for students coming to Brunel for the first time.The event will run over two days, on September 18th and 19th, and will feature a mix of presentations, social events, guided tours and trips to places of interest. Commenting, Rachael Elliot, Head of International Student Services said: “Starting a course is an exciting chapter in the life of any new student, but more so for international students. Moving country, making friends, living in a new environment and adjusting to different study methods are just some of the aspects of life that you can look forward to. And with a community of over 2000 international students from over 120 different countries there is no need to feel alone. There are many events and activities on campus to help you adjust to your new surroundings, and the International Student Orientation Programme is just one of them.” Filiz Oztanriverdi, orientation coordinator, says “It’s always been a popular event and now, having consulted our existing students, we think it’s going to be better than ever! We are all really looking forward to meeting our new students.” New for 2008 is a free airport pickup service, on September 16th and 17th, for people taking part in the programme. Buses will take students to the campus, where they will be directed to their accommodation. Highlights of this year’s orientation will include a formal welcome from the Vice Chancellor, an excursion to Blenheim Palace, a London shopping trip and a traditional celidh (Irish dance) night. Guided tours of the campus and brief talks on UK and University life will also take place – and those who attend will be able to register as a student before anybody else. The entire programme, including English breakfast, lunch and dinner, is free to students paying international fees and costs just £95 for EU students. The only thing students need to pay for is their accommodation, which is available on campus for an additional fee. Summer is a time of celebration for students, parents and staff at Brunel. Our graduation ceremonies on campus provide an opportunity to congratulate new Alumni on their hard work and successes and to wish them well in the future. Though graduation is a time for goodbyes, we have a thriving alumni association that helps people stay in touch. Due to open in the academic year 2010/2011, the newbuilding will provide a fantastic environment forstudents and staff. Its announcement comes shortlyafter the launch of a newMBA centre, which shares abuilding with Brunel International; and the creationof a 6th international research centre dedicated toOperations and Supply Chain Management.

These are exciting times for Brunel’s internationally acclaimed Business School. It hasrecently been granted permission and support from the University to build a dedicatedschool building which will bring all of its academic and administrative activities into oneplace, including its PhD,MBA and Executive Development programmes.

Brunel’s Institute for theEnvironment is launching a newMSc programme dedicated toClimate Change Impacts andSustainability.

This will draw together the scientific,engineering, business, political and socialissues associated with a move to a post

carbon economy, providing students with astrong, multidisciplinary grasp of the field.

With recent energy price rises, this is amore pressing issue than ever for businessand governments, so students can expect tobe highly employable in the years to come.

Brunel seeksstudents’opinionsResults are in from thisyear’s International StudentBarometer; an independentsurvey of internationalstudent opinion on allaspects of University life.The findings have been verypositive for BrunelUniversity.

From the London universities thattook part in the survey, Brunel’sstudents emerged as the mostsatisfied with the opportunities forlanguage support, work experienceand careers advice.

Brunel students also stated thatthey were attracted to the universityby the high reputation of a Bruneldegree amongst potentialemployers.

Furthermore the studentsreported that all aspects of thelearning experience at Brunel hadimproved year on year. They wereparticularly impressed by thestandard of advice given tostudents.

Director of Brunel International,Chris Chang said “The benefit ofundertaking the ISB is clear – itallows us to identify areas forimprovement and do our best toensure that the student experiencegets better every year. This year’sresults are very positive andprovide an excellent basis fromwhich to develop”.

In June 2008 theVice Chancellor presentedour InternationalAmbassador Scholars withcertificates to thank them for all their hardwork in representing the University.

The Scholarship programme, which has been runningfor a number of years, awards scholarships onacademic merit to students from many countries andsubject areas.

For 07/08, sixteen one-year Masters studentsreceived half-fee scholarships in return for taking partin occasional promotional films and for writing abouttheir experiences at Brunel.

The ceremony and party that followed was attendedby ten of the students, together with members of theInternational team and senior academic staff.

MSc Mechanical Engineering student,Ethamokha Lamai, from Nigeria,andBrazilian studentAna Paula Gonzalezgive some tips on what to pack whenyou’re travelling to Brunel University.

1. Travel light – leave behind things that canbe bought in the UK, such as cookingutensils and text books.

2. Bring enough money to last you 3-4 weeksafter registration, when your bank accountshould be open.

3. Pack clothes suitable for day temperaturesof 10 – 15 degrees C, with some rain. Youcan buy heavy winter clothing here.

4. It may be cheaper to bring a laptop withyou from home, so compare prices beforeyou travel.

5. Bring photos of family and friends (phonenumbers too!).

6. Your favourite music and movies will helpyou relax.

7. If you’re a postgrad student, bring yourprevious lecture notes.

8. Don’t bring food. London has most ofwhat you will find at home.

Brunel student directsfirst feature filmInternational student Pepe Petos has released his firstfeature film,“Memories of a Future”, in collaboration withdirector/producer Margaret Dickinson.

The film is a documentary of a journey made by veterans of theInternational Brigades in 2006, as they retrace the steps that took them toSpain during the Spanish Civil War.

Following showings at the Sheffield, Berlin and Vibgyor film festivals,the work is now available as a DVD through the International BrigadesMemorial Trust website: www.international-brigades.org.uk/merchandise.htm

Anthropologystaffmigratefor thesummerSummer provides theperfect opportunity for ourAnthropology staff toembark on field trips andthis year is no exception.

Dr Melissa Parker, the founderdirector of the new Brunel Centrefor Research in InternationalMedical Anthropology (CRIMA)will be undertaking research intoneglected tropical diseases in NWUganda.

Dr Isak Niehaus, meanwhile,will be revisiting South Africa tocontinue his HIV/AIDS relatedresearch. Dr Andrew Betty will beprospecting for a field site inChiapas, Mexico; and Dr PeggyFroerer will be researchingchildhood learning and education incentral India.

Motorsport EngineeringGraduate joins Force India

Having graduated in thesummer of 2007 with firstclass honours,DanMarshall has achieved hisambition of working inFormula One – by joiningthe sport’s newest team,Force India.

Dan chose to study at Brunelbecause it was the only universityat the time to offer a specialistMotorsport Engineering Degreecourse. He saw it as “my biggestchance of getting into FormulaOne”.

In his final year Dan completedtwo projects, designing drivercontrol systems and then leadingchassis and body-panel develop-ment for the University’s singleseater Formula Student cars.

These sophisticated and verypowerful cars compete in thekeenly fought Formula StudentMotorsport series, in the UK andthroughout Europe. Team Brunelwon the UK series in 2005.

The University is highlyregarded in the motorsport worldand many of our students, likeDan, secure exciting jobs withleading teams.

OVEC, MauritiusWhen was OVEC established?In 2002, by Dr Dorish Chitson, who has over 25years’ education experience in Mauritius. TodayOVEC has partnerships with over 90 Universitiesaround the world, including Brunel.

Why do you like to work with Brunel?The Brunel team regularly travels to Mauritius,which is so useful as they can get to know thestudents here and their parents. Also the Universityreally takes care of international students through itsdedicated international student service.

What do your students think of Brunel?Mauritian students really enjoy Brunel. It has one ofthe best campuses in London, with state of the artteaching buildings, new halls of residence andworld class sporting facilities. And the transportlinks are very good, with Heathrow nearby.

What do you see as the benefits of studyingabroad?It not only gives people quality learning andprofessional skills; it allows them to develop aglobal outlook and level of self-confidence that willenrich their careers. That’s so important in acompetitive world.

HouseholdnamesattendGraduaterecruitmentfairThe BBC,Capgemini,Ernst&Young, Jaguar Landroverand, for the first time,CocaCola,were amongst the 60employers who attendedBrunel’s Graduaterecruitment fair on May19th,2008.

The 1300 students who attendedwere able to access more than3,000 immediate vacancies forGraduates and the show was hailedas a great success by exhibitorsand visitors alike.

Brunel has a global reputationfor automotive engineering andone highlight was the appearanceof the highly innovative Jaguar XFsports saloon on JaguarLandrover’s stand.

The next Placement & CareersFair will be held on the 10th and11th of November, 2008.

Dr.Rama Sithanen,Mauritius’Deputy Prime Minister andMinister of Finance and Economic Development,hascompleted his part-time PhD with Brunel University.

He began his programme in 2004,choosing Brunel both for theflexibility it offered part-timestudents and for its convenientlocation, which enabled him tovisit his supervisor during regulartrips to London on officialbusiness.

Dr. Sithanen’s PhD reflected hiswork as one of Mauritius’ leadingpoliticians and was entitled“Evaluating and ProposingElectoral Systems in PluralSocieties: the Case for Mauritius”.

What do your students think of Brunel?Mauritian students really enjoy Brunel. It has one ofthe best campuses in London, with state of the artteaching buildings, new halls of residence andworld class sporting facilities. And the transportlinks are very good, with Heathrow nearby.

What do you see as the benefits of studyingabroad?It not only gives people quality learning andprofessional skills; it allows them to develop aglobal outlook and level of self-confidence that willenrich their careers. That’s so important in acompetitive world.

HouseholdnamesattendGraduaterecruitmentfairThe BBC,Capgemini,Ernst&Young, Jaguar Landroverand, for the first time,CocaCola,were amongst the 60employers who attendedBrunel’s Graduaterecruitment fair on May19th,2008.

The 1300 students who attendedwere able to access more than3,000 immediate vacancies forGraduates and the show was hailedas a great success by exhibitorsand visitors alike.

Brunel has a global reputationfor automotive engineering andone highlight was the appearanceof the highly innovative Jaguar XFsports saloon on JaguarLandrover’s stand.

Dr.Rama Sithanen,Mauritius’Deputy Prime Minister andMinister of Finance and Economic Development,hascompleted his part-time PhD with Brunel University.

He began his programme in 2004,choosing Brunel both for theflexibility it offered part-timestudents and for its convenientlocation, which enabled him tovisit his supervisor during regulartrips to London on officialbusiness.

Dr. Sithanen’s PhD reflected hiswork as one of Mauritius’ leadingpoliticians and was entitled“Evaluating and ProposingElectoral Systems in PluralSocieties: the Case for Mauritius”.

What do you most like about it?Definitely the people I meet! It’sreally satisfying meeting anapplicant when they arrive here asa student and then watching themprogress to their graduationceremony.

What do you think of livingnear London?I love the parks, the surroundingcountryside with its littlefootpaths, the restaurants and ofcourse the entertainment –theatres, clubs, cinemas.

Who is your favourite singeror band?There are a lot to choose from!Joe Cocker, The Jam, Space, theZutons and AmyWinehouse allget played a lot at home.

What is your favourite foodand why?Anything from Asia would behigh on my list. Indian food hereis widely available and I like theclean, spicy flavours of Thaicuisine.

What is your favouritedestination?Thailand, for the food, climateand temples. China for thecontrasts between the old and thenew. Each city has its own specialcharacter.

And what is the mostinteresting thing you’ve seen?The Terracotta Army near Xi’anis not to be missed. Neither isStinking Tofu!

The one-year full-time or two-to-four-year part-time programme isintended for experienced designersand engineers who want to becomeexpert in creating human-centredproducts, systems and services.

Robert Gifford, ExecutiveDirector of the ParliamentaryAdvisory Council for TransportSafety said: “As technologybecomes ever morecomprehensive…it is important thatwe understand how humans behaveand what …(will)… help and hindertheir performance. PACTS stronglysupports developments in this area,such as the Brunel MSc”.

The programme combines thelatest thinking in biomechanics,psychology and engineering with astrong practical element, asparticipants focus on a wide rangeof design problems and applications.

Brunel University is pleased to announce 112 new studioflats for couples, as part of a general £250m expansion of itson-campus facilities.The studio flats are located on the westside of the campus near Galbraith Hall.The Complexincludes launderette facilities, communal areas,coffee shopand a dance studio.All the fixtures and furnishings are ofthe highest standard.

The flats will be ready to occupy in September 2008, with priority given tocouples who are first-year full-time postgraduate students, full-timeresearch students and 5th and 4th year Final Undergraduates. Brunel hosts careers advisor workshopInApril this year BrunelUniversity hosted an eventorganised by British CouncilChina, to introduce China’s jobmarket and employers’needs toCareersAdvisors at UKUniversities.

Around 150 representatives from UKinstitutions attended the event and heardpresentations from a number of HumanResources experts and consultants whohave particular experience of China’sGraduate recruitment market.

The Speakers addressed key issuesfacing both students and career advisorsand in particular how to access careeropportunities back home. Brunel ishoping to host similar events for othercountries in the future.

Politics &HistoryProfessorvisits PolandProfessor Justin Fisher, fromthe Department of Politics &History,visited Poland inJune in his capacity as anexpert advisor on financialregulations.

There he helped to evaluate partyfinance regulations, drawing onexpertise gained working with theEnglish Parliament on issues suchas lobbying and the cash forpeerages enquiry. Professor Fisherprovided advice to the Council ofEurope’s Group of States AgainstCorruption.
