School + Sports = Team Spirit Extreme Weight Loss: A How To with Georgeanna Johnson - Thursday, September 11
You may be familiar with the television show on ABC entitled Extreme Weight Loss. The
July 22nd episode featured Georgeanna Johnson who is Michele Clark’s (our FLIP
coordinator) daughter! Georgeanna will come to share a simple get-in-shape recipe, a few
weight-blasting exercises as well as share her incredible year-long and 150-pound weight
loss journey. Join us for this exciting and tear-jerking true story on Thursday, September
11th at 2:00 p.m. Sign up at the front desk for this FREE event featuring healthy
refreshments by Tuesday, September 9th.
Tasty Tuesday Café - Tuesday, September 16
Hey there, sports fans! We have a treat on Tuesday, September 16th at 11:30 a.m. Ricky
Rooker, our Circuit Court Clerk, is also an Official with the SEC. Join us as he talks about his
experiences officiating college football, as well as some of the new rules in the SEC this
year. Beforehand, tuck into the comforts of barbecue, coleslaw, baked beans and
cornbread. Purchase your $5.00 ticket by Friday, September 12th.
Pneumonia and Flu Shot Clinic - Thursday, September 18
We all know the back to school season isn’t complete without the presence of a flu clinic.
Health professionals are recommending getting the shots earlier this year. Walgreens will
be here on Thursday, September 18th between 10:00 a.m. and noon to administer both
pneumonia and flu shots. They will also have the stronger Senior Flu shot available. Please
pick up a packet at the front desk if you are interested in receiving one or both shots. The
completed form must be returned to the front desk by Monday, September 15th.
Homecoming - Tuesday, September 30
There’s not a better way to celebrate Back to School then by getting your team–spirit on!
Celebrate homecoming by wearing the sports team ensemble of your choice. Just be sure
to demonstrate team spirit with those who support your rivals! Prizes will be given to those
demonstrating the most team spirit! We’ll kickoff the Tuesday, September 30th Homecom-
ing at 11:30 a.m. with FREE hot dogs and a side provided by our sponsor, Windlands East.
Afterward, compete on a team in four Minute-to-Win-It challenges. The object of Minute-
to-Win-It is for a team mate to successfully complete each challenge within one minute.
Anyone can do these challenges and each challenge will be completed while seated! The
team mates who win the most challenges within the timeframe allotted will each win a
prize. There will be a special signup sheet in the FREE event binder at the front desk for
teams of two and four who would like to compete in the minute-to-win-it challenges.
Pompoms will be available for those wishing to remain spectators. Sign up at the front
desk by Thursday, September 25th to attend this FREE event.

Area playoffs for Senior Brain Games. They plan to come in
first next year!
WannaBeatles Dinner Show - Thursday, September 25
The WannaBeatles consists of award-winning and talented music producers, arrangers,
studio players, and singers who have "Come Together" to play the music they grew up
with. Since then, the WannaBeatles have developed a following of regulars who look
forward to the band's own special version of the "British Invasion". This show’s
bounteous supper will consist of roast beef and gravy, smashed garlic red potatoes,
green beans, salad, roll and dessert. Seating will begin at 5:45 p.m. Tickets are $25.00
and are available at the front desk until Friday, September 19th.

Ballroom Dance– Ballroom will resume on September 8th and continue each Monday at 5:00 p.m. Intermediate

Bob Ross Oil Painting Class– $25 for a completed oil painting on canvas! Taught by certified instructor Liz Farar.

Candle-Making– Join Betty Jean at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 23rd to make & decorate 2 large slow-burning
candles. Sign up at the front by Friday, September 19th for this $15 class. Pay the instructor the day of.
*Crochet for Beginners– Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. Led by Paulette Spalding. Bring an “H” needle and yarn and
Paulette will be happy to show you the basics of crochet.
Framing– Learn the art of framing your own projects, including matte board, glass & moulding! $15 for 3 hours.

& chairs.
*SilverSneakers Circuit– Mondays at 12:30 p.m.– taught by Kathleen Phillips. Combines fun & fitness to
increase your cardiovascular & muscle endurance with a standing workout.
*SilverSneakers Stress Reduction & Restorative Breathing– Every Monday from 2-3 p.m. This class
focuses on reducing stress through breathing techniques & gentle exercise. Taught by Kathleen Phillips.
*SilverSneakers Yoga - Taught by Kathleen Phillips on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. Yoga Stretch will move your
whole body through a series of seated and standing yoga poses.
Tai-Chi– Wednesdays at 9 a.m. & 6:45 p.m. Taught by Larry Lee. Learn the ancient art of Tai Chi to improve
balance, flexibility and overall health. $3/class
*Tech Up– Sign up at the front desk for one-on-one instruction with Lauren, our Morning Office Manager, for
social media, tablets or smartphones. Second and fourth Wednesdays. Half hour increments between 8:30
& 9:30 a.m.
Yoga– Mondays at 2 p.m. & 6 p.m., Wednesdays at 2 p.m., Thursdays at 6 p.m. & Fridays at 2 p.m. Taught by
Stephen North, Jr. Learn the art of relaxation & health through traditional yoga. $5/class.

Bible Conversation – Bible Conversation meets every Wednesday at 10 a.m. Interim leader: Del Dorr.
Book Club – Meet Wednesday, September 24th at 1:00 p.m. The September selection is The Five People You Meet in
Heaven by Mitch Albom and is available at the local library. Facilitator: Del Dorr.
Brain Train – Every Monday at 11:00 practice team trivia with Madison’s Brain Train team. Come for fun and/or
to join!
Bunco - Come play Bunco on the first Tuesday of every month at 12:30 p.m. We need at least 4 to play this easy dice
game. Free prizes for those who win the most and Bunco.
Crochet Club – Every Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. All crocheters welcome for fun and fellowship! Instruction provided.
Film Club – Friday, September 5th features our nod to Robin Williams in Popeye; the 19th is Book Club’s choice:
The Five People You Meet in Heaven; and on the 26th, in honor of Active Aging week, NPT’s Aging Matters
featuring Sandy Wray and members of FiftyForward Madison! Movies begin at 1:30 p.m. Free refreshments!
Friday Night Music Jam - Every Friday from 6-9 p.m. Free, but they do pass the hat for donations. All acoustic
music welcome. Bring your instrument and sign up to play!
Game Club – Everyone is welcome to join Sam on the second Tuesday of each month at 12:30 p.m. to play a new
game. In September, play the well-loved card game Phase 10. All you pros come show Sam how it’s done!
Genealogy Club – Meets 1st Thursday at 10 a.m. Want to research your family history? This is the group for you.
Golden Tones Choir – Led by Geno Haffner. Fridays at 12:30 p.m. Seeking those who love to sing.
Inglewood & Friends – Meets 3rd Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m. Plans monthly trips.
Karaoke Club – Meets 2nd Thursday of each month at 12:30 p.m. led by “D. J. Dottie” Dillard. Come sing your
favorite song or just listen. Door prizes! Karaoke is on September 11th and will feature patriotic songs.
Knitting Club – Thursdays at 12:30 p.m. Don’t know how? Someone will show you! Just bring your knitting needles
and some yarn.
Madison Travelers – Meets 1st Wednesday of each month at 12 p.m. Plans monthly trips for evenings and weekends.
Matinee Movie Club– Meet with Sylvia Ballard in the lobby of the Wynnsong Theater at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesdays. Take
advantage of reduced prices: movie tickets are $5.75, popcorn and drinks are $2.00. Pick a show to see and
decide if you’d like to go out afterwards as a group to eat.
Mexican Train Dominoes – 12:30 p.m. every Wednesday. Come learn how to play this fun game. Bring a set of
dominoes if you have them.
Open Music Jam – Every Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. in Classroom #2.
Photo Club – The Nashville Photography’s Digital Focus Group meets the fourth Tuesdays at 6:00 p.m. In September
they will be discovering exposure blending in Photoshop.
Pop-Up Club – Sign up at the front desk to be made aware of last minute deals on trips and entertainment, known as
“pop-ups” as they come available.
Quilting Club – Mondays from 11-2 p.m. Bring your materials and quilt away! Led by Carole Petty.
Red Hat Society – Meets 2nd Monday of each month at 10:30 a.m. $15 yearly dues. Join these ladies for lunch in red

Grief Support Group-
Every first and third Monday at 10 a.m. we offer a free support group for those dealing with the stages of grief. Meet with
others who are journeying through the same processes in a safe and confidential environment. Facilitated by Adam
Waltenbaugh, Masters in Counseling, Vanderbilt University.
Having a Big Party? Rent our Building!-
We provide rental of our Social Room for evenings and Saturdays. Cost is $100 per hour, minimum of three hours and includes all
tables and chairs. FiftyForward members receive a 25% discount!
Living at Home Services-
Providing referrals to help seniors remain at home as long as possible. Adrienne Morgan, Care Manager. Call 860-7180.
Medicare Counseling-
Kay Sanders, a member of our Center, is certified in helping with any questions and concerns you may have about your Medicare
plan. The third Tuesday of every month at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Please sign up at the front desk.
Metro Nutrition Program-
Lunch for seniors over 60. Must apply with Metro first. Mon-Fri, 11:30 am. 48 hour reservation required. Also serving Meals on
Wheels. Contact Felicia Whitaker at 860-7180. Donations requested.
Notary Services-
Julie Reeves, Notary. Donation to the center requested. Monday through Thursday, 12:30– 4:30 p.m. Fridays 11:30-3:30 p.m.
Open Computer Lab-
Our computer lab is equipped with cable internet and open for your daily use! *NOTE: Lab is closed during private computer
tutoring times, massage, reflexology, Legal Aid and Medicare Counseling. *
Personal Trainer-
Michael Neel, Certified Personal Trainer is available to work with you on Mondays from 4:30-6:30 p.m. He will be happy to show
you how to safely and effectively use the fitness equipment in the Fitness Center. It is $15/30 minutes and $25/an hour. Please sign
up at the front desk if interested. Lisa Elkin, Certified Personal Trainer is also available for sessions during the day. Call her at

Reflexology Appointments- Every 2nd Tuesday 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. David Robertson, RCR, Certified Reflexologist of Nice Touch Reflexology. Cost is $25 for 30 minutes, $50 for one hour. Call 860-7180 to schedule.
Technology On Demand: Private Computer Tutoring-
Taught by Don Smartt. Private sessions are 90 minutes each. Topics available include Microsoft Word, Excel Basics, Internet

Special Services
Courtyard Concerts Before the music plays, brunch on homestyle vittles at Bob Evans near Music Valley Drive. Afterward, enjoy a concert in the Robinson
Courtyard at the Library on Church downtown. Annie Sellick and the Hot Club of Nashville offer a repertoire of songs from the 1930s
and 40s (Honeysuckle Rose and Sweet Georgia Brown) as well as the perky storytelling and singing of Annie Sellick. Ms. Sellick is a
Nashville native vocalist who was voted Best Jazz Artist by readers of the Nashville Scene five years in a row and has since toured all
over the world.

Del’s Destination: Discovery! Goes Greek
Del has cooked up another intrepid scheme for us! Join him in discovering the 27th annual Nashville Greek Festival on the grounds of the
Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church on Franklin Pike. The Nashville Greek Festival offers a rich, multi-sensory experience of Greek
hospitality and culture. Experience the savory cuisine, soulful music, lively dancing, and a tour of the church at this glendi (Greek for
celebration) where everyone is Greek for the day! Dine right at the festival and take in the delectable Greek cooking.

Supper Club
Join Sam and the Supper Club gang at Darfons in Donelson. Darfons offers traditional American fare with chef-inspired daily specials

California as well as The Cakewalk and Sunset Grill here in Nashville. He maintains a passion for creating unique and flavorful dishes.

Kentucky Downs Just over the state line, the thrill of Kentucky Downs awaits. Kentucky Downs only features live thoroughbred horseraces in the month
of September and we won’t let it pass us by! Along the way, make a pit stop at the Cracker Barrel in White House for lunch. Once you
arrive, you will have an opportunity to use a $10 free play coupon – which Ron will provide - at the slots (fine print: you must sign up
for the Players Club Rewards program to receive this free play coupon). The races will begin around 1:30 p.m. At race time the
concessions will open for drinks and snacks.

We know the next featured Music for Seniors group! Known affectionately as John Young’s band, Journey of Faith - a four-piece gospel

Inglewood to Chaney’s Dairy Barn – Bowling Green, KY Inglewood & Friends goes to the Farm! Chaney’s Dairy Barn that is. Enjoy a wagon ride to the barn, a live milking demonstration, a
visit with a Jersey calf and don’t forget a free scoop of Chaney's homemade ice cream. Now that you’re hungry, lunch on sandwiches,
burgers, wraps and salads at Chaney’s Dairy Barn restaurant. You may want to get another serving of ice cream too as Chaney’s was
named USA Today’s #1 ice cream in the state of Kentucky!

Bucket List – Fontanel Zipline Tour
Zipping is a thrilling adventure with a bird’s eye view soaring through the green hills of Fontanel. Zippers sail through the air on steel
cables, secured in a safety harness and attached to a zip pulley system. Fontanel’s two-hour Zipline tour features a course of 8 lines. Af-
terward, eat at Café Fontanel, an Italian inspired eatery. Please sign up by Monday, September 8th. No refunds will be given after this
date. Tell Sam your suggestion for our next Bucket List trip!

Hiking Club to White House
Hiking Club returns and now we get to enjoy cooler weather and autumn foliage! Explore the White House Greenway with Michele and
Sam. The paved pathway begins in the central part of the city, curves around its eastern side, and ends north of White House. The
tree-lined trail continues alongside a creek for much of the journey. Next, tuck into Mexican viands at the colorfully and authentically
decorated De La Paz Mexican Restaurant.

Flea Market Vendor Meeting For all those with concerns about the Flea Market, we will hold a meeting to discuss FiftyForward Madison’s Flea
Market options on Friday, September 5th at 1:00 p.m. Kelsey Mahaffey, Center Director, will open the meeting. Sam
Garlock, Program Manager, and Members from the Advisory Council and Fundraising Committee will also be present
to help address this topic.
“What’s in the Bag?” *Put your game faces on! Join Sherry Hall and Ellen Wells of HighPoint Hospice for a new game entitled “What’s in the
Bag?” Discover the fun on Thursday, September 4th at 1:45 p.m. for a chance to win a prize! “What’s in the Bag?” will
now be a regular occurring game on every first Thursday of the month! FREE refreshments will also be served.
Senior Day at The Fair We have a last minute trip announcement for Tuesday, September 9th: Senior Day at the Fair holds a variety of charms
and delights for everyone including a FREE lunch! Head out at 9:00 a.m. to experience clowns, racing pigs and
everything in between. At 11:30 a.m. attend a seminar about our favorite subject, FiftyForward, in the Creative Arts
Building and receive a FREE lunch on us! The cost of this trip is only $5.00. Sign up at the front desk.
Matinee Movie Club Join Sylvia Ballard on Tuesday, September 9th at 9:30 a.m. in the coffee area of the Social Room to get to know one
another and to discuss September’s Matinee Movie Club feature films. Matinee Movie Club meets Tuesdays at
4:00 p.m. in the lobby of the Wynnsong Theater on Myatt Drive.
Audiology Screening Summit Audiology will provide FREE hearing screenings on the third Tuesday of each month. Each screening will be a
simple four part test to help determine your hearing level. Afterward, the audiology practitioner will make suggestions
concerning your hearing health. Sign up at the front desk for a slot starting at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 16th.
Get in the Know On Thursday, September 18th at 1:30, join Shauna Hammonds of SHIP for ‘Medicare Maintenance.’ Medicare’s open
enrollment period is just around the corner. Need help making changes to your plan? Shauna will help guide you
through the enrollment and maintenance of Medicare issues.
Classy Candles Class Join Miss Betty Jean for the second candle making class on Tuesday, September 23rd at 2:00 p.m. Betty Jean has taught
candle making at Michael’s and has her own candle making business. Make two scented candles in stemware with the
décor of your choice. Each candle will last for approximately a month and a half of burn time. $15 buys all your
supplies and decorations. Please wear close-toed shoes for this class. Stop by the front desk to sign up by Friday,
September 19th and to see an example of a completed candle.

Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP) is seeking volunteers
55+ to tutor students in reading at these Madison area
schools: Amqui Elementary, Taylor-Stratton
Elementary & Bellshire Elementary. Tutors are also
needed for Hermitage, Donelson & East Nashville ele-
mentary schools. Tutors spend 2 hours a week during
school hours tutoring at a school near their homes.
