INTERLOCHEN ARTS ACADEMYInterlochen Arts Academy, the nation’s first and foremost boarding fine arts high school, unites students with

others who value their highest aspirations, creating a close-knit artists’ community. Over 500 of the world’s most talented and motivated young artists study music, theatre, dance, visual arts, creative writing,

motion picture arts, comparative arts, and comprehensive academics in a college-like setting. They find in the Academy a fast-paced, creative environment that challenges, inspires, and focuses their talents

and prepares them to take prominent roles in a whole universe of professional endeavors.

Dr. Joseph E. Maddy, one of America’s foremost arts educators, founded the Academy in 1962 to give talented students an opportunity to specialize in the arts at an early age without sacrificing

the academic studies that are so essential for a successful future. The Academy is part of Interlochen Center for the Arts, the only community in the world that brings together:

• a 2,500-student summer arts camp program • a 500-student fine arts boarding high school with college-prep academics • year-round opportunities for hundreds of adults to engage in fulfilling artistic and creative programs • two 24-hour, listener-supported public radio services (classical music and news) • 600 arts presentations annually by students, faculty, and world-renowned guest artists

MISSION STATEMENTInterlochen Center for the Arts

Interlochen Center for the Arts engages and inspires people worldwide through excellence in educational, artistic, and cultural programs, enhancing the quality of life through the universal language of the arts.

MISSION AND PHILOSOPHY STATEMENTInterlochen Arts Academy

Interlochen Arts Academy (IAA) provides high school students who demonstrate significant artistic potential with pre-professional arts instruction, and a challenging academic program

that prepares them for college, university, and conservatory education. The Academy cultivates an environment in which students are encouraged to achieve their fullest potential as artists,

thinkers, collaborators, and responsible members of a diverse, inclusive community.

Senior Speaker and Senior Performer

To honor the multifaceted artistic and academic talents of all the Arts Academy seniors, we have one SeniorSpeaker and one Senior Performance. All seniors who wish to apply are eligible for these honors. A Selection Committee made up of faculty members and students reviews all applications and selects semifinalists who are then asked to prepare their speech or their performance. Each semifinalist auditions in front of the Selection Committee, and the Committee chooses a winner in each category. The application and audition process is both extensive and demanding. Our speaker and our performers this year are to be commended for their talent and passion as well as their dedication to the process that led them to be on the stage today.

Artist Statement

My aim is to write songs that are universal, so people of all ages can relate to them. My lyrics are centered on a strong emotion, weaving it with evocative imagery. One of the main reasons I make music is because it grounds me and helps me realize what is important. To me, the common truths of the human condition are what keep us connected to one another.

I look up to artists like Ruben Blades, Esperanza Spalding, and Stevie Wonder for using their artistic voice to express their concerns, feelings, and thoughts. Facing the truth, talking about it, and developing a social consciousness is essential to creating a society that values the truth.

Once I started to perform my own songs, I realized the impact they had on people. It is a very special experience to have someone say that they needed to hear my song. My goal as a performer is to maintain a genuine environment where my audience can feel safe and connect with the music. I hope my music can help others realize their inner strength the way it helped me realize mine. – Isabella Morcote, Singer-Songwriter

THE COLORS OF ACADEMIC ATTIRE

The traditional pageantry of an academic procession is an impressive spectacle. Its significance may seem concealed behind a baffling array of rich and somber gowns of varying cuts and vividly contrasting multicolored hoods; yet within this kaleidoscope, there lies an orderly and time-honored system of displaying the symbols of scholarly attainment.

Although some American colleges and universities adopted the English custom of academic dress from founding, it was not until the late 19th century that academic attire came into general use for ceremonial occasions. The uniformity of the American system of academic heraldry, resulting from a code established by the American Council of Education, indicates the degree conveyed by an academic costume; the field, or faculty, in which it was earned; and the institution by which it was granted.

The most basic of the three parts of the scholar’s costume, the gown, differs for the three levels of degrees primarily in the sleeve. The pointed sleeve of the bachelor’s gown distinguishes it from the squared end of the master’s sleeve, which reaches nearly to the knee and is slit above the elbow. The doctor’s gown has

bell-shaped sleeves, and is the only one of the three that is permitted with velvet trimming on the front facings and cross bars on the upper portion of the arm.

The American mortarboard, derived from the Oxford cap, is black like the gown. Its tassel, for holders of the bachelor’s and master’s degrees, is usually black, although in some instances color may be used to identify the faculty of the scholar. Gold tassels are reserved for holders of doctoral degrees and heads of institutions.

It is the hood that provides academic regalia its color and offers the most information about its owner. The silk lining bears the color or colors, of the degree-granting institution; its velvet edging displays the color assigned to that area of study in which the degree was taken. The length of the hood and the width of the edging increase with the level of the degree.

Variations in this uniformity may be observed in the special gowns worn by the governing officers of a number of institutions, the colored robes of the graduates of a few universities which have departed from the tradition of black, and the diversified attire of holders of degrees from foreign universities.

THANK YOU FOR CREATING AMAZING

Thanks to the generosity of more than 18,500 members of the entire Interlochen family, we have united through the power of the arts to create amazing.

More than $135 million was raised from Interlochen students, parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, volunteers, friends, listeners, and patrons,

who spanned 54 countries, 50 states, and Washington, D.C.

CREATE AMAZING: The Campaign for Interlochen opened a new world of opportunity.

More students than ever before attended Camp and Academy through increased financial aid—the most distributed in Interlochen’s history. Students toured across the United States, including performing at

the NY PHIL BIENNIAL at Lincoln Center. The essential new Music Center will welcome its first class of Academy students in fall 2019. An expanded

and renovated Dance Building will help generations of dancers soar. Students and all visitors can enjoy an accessible waterfront and an enhanced

Corson Auditorium. Planned gifts will create a strong future for tomorrow’s artists.

We are extraordinarily grateful for your unprecedented support, which has laid the groundwork for Interlochen’s centennial in just ten years.

Thank you for investing in the talent and promise of our young artists. As we congratulate the class of 2019, we celebrate how they will

create amazing for years to come. Your legacy will live on in theirs.

Angelica Bohanan is from Broken Bow, Oklahoma, and has attended Interlochen Arts Academy for four years. Bohanan received the Finalist status in the 2019 YoungArts competition. She creates artwork in a variety of media while integrating her culture with traditional techniques which include ceramics and basket weaving. The imagery in her work is procured from her journals and centers around her innermost demons, community, and family. The artwork gives insight to a personal narrative that is also very political and relatable.

Simon Garb lives and plays in Appleton, Wisconsin. Simon’s Interlochen experience started in 2011 as a junior camper and he continued attending Camp through 2017. Simon then enrolled in the Academy as a junior. Simon’s work explores different ideas of what space means, and how space can alter our ability to be vulnerable and connect with one another. He uses a variety of media and processes to tell stories in order to connect better with his audience. Simon has also been a participant in the Aesthetics of Health class during his time here at Interlochen, meeting and connecting with patients at the Cowell Family Cancer Center through his art, with the help of his friends and colleagues. Simon will be attending The Cooper Union School of Art this coming fall.
