6OOD NEWSActe 6:l-7 I I Pebr 2:rF9 / John 14=1-12
When the planes flew into New York's twin towers on that fateful Tuesdayin September 2oor., I had just arrived early to set up for a meeting of campusminis-ters. I had caught the first account on the car radio. "Are you listeningto this?" I asked a colleague. She hadn't heard the news, but my boss camedown from his apartment upstairs and said quietly, "l have it on TV." I
couldn't think of any-thing to say except "Show it to me; can I see it?"
We went upstairs and watched as long as we could before our colleaguesarrived, and we talked and listened and then went into Mass to pray for thelives lost and for the future of our world.
"Show mer" we say, when things seems impossible to imagine. "Showme," we say when a child comes in wide-eyed wonder with a treasure she
has just found. "Show me," Philip said, because he couldn't imagine the God-Father that Jesus was speaking about. He expected some grand sign-anearthquake, a thunderstorm, or any of the ways the presence of God was
depicted in the Old Testament.
What he did not expect was that Jesus, who was standing right in front ofhim, was God himself: "Whoever has seen me has seen the Father."
We often miss the evidence that God is with us. lt may be something as
simple as the beauty of creation or the outpouring of love and support theworld gave to the people of New York that long-ago day.
Let us praythat we see his presence in our midst this week-and always.

How does a priest keep
someone he knows fromperson?
the confession oJ a grieuous sin by
afecting his relationship with that
One of a priest's most sacred responsibilities is theconfidentiality of the confessional. This confidentialityencompasses everyone, even the priest and penitentoutside the confessional. A priest is not allowed todiscuss the confessed sin with the person outside theconfessional unless permission is granted for furthercounseling.
The confessor is also forbidden to use any knowledgegained through the sacrament of reconciliation torestrict the penitent. For instance, if a pastor'sbookkeeper confessed he was embezzling money, thepastor could not use the knowledge acquired in theconfessional to fire the person.
Priests generally try to forget the specific sinsparishioners confess to us, and it really isn't thatdifficult. Contrary to what many think, a parishioner'ssins do not rush into my mind when I speak to him orher.
'We have aJl sinned, done things we are ashamed ofthings we wouldn't want anyone to know about, thingswe would not want others to define us by. Thisknowledge and the grace of the sacrament help us lookpast the mistakes of others and recognize Christ withinthem. FR. RICK POTIS, CS"R [email protected]
Wtry sh*rlkl I go tc ccrafessi*n?
Certainly God knows when we are sorry for our sins. And since 6od's onlyrelationship with us is one of unconditional love, whenever we turn to God
with a sincere sorrow for sin and a desire to make a new begtnning, God isthere to meet us with forgiveness. As human beings, however, we may need a more concrete way ofexperiencing God's love for us. A person who loves us might show his or herlove by making time for us, writing us a note, treating us to a special meal, orbuying us a gift. We may already know that our friend cares for us, but theconcrete attention is a confirmation and reassurance that human loverequires. We Catholics believe that God has given us the sacraments as a wayof showing that we are receiving the gift of his love in very real and down-to-earth ways. {mare at http://bustedhalo.com/questionbox/why-should-i-go-to- co nf e ss i o n - d oe s n t- g o d- a I r e a d y - k n ow -t h ot- i m- so r ry -f o r- my - s i nsl
