Fifth Sunday of Easter May 22, 2011

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father

except through me.” — John 14:6

When you were baptized the priest anointed and consecrated you as a temple of the Holy Spirit and member of Christ’s Body with these words: “As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet, and King so may you live always as a member of Christ’s Body.” Today we are reminded of those words in the second reading from the Letter of St. Peter: “You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own People.” With these words we are reminded of our Baptismal rights and responsibilities, and in the Gospel that we live in Jesus who said, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” God is with us and God is in us. We are called to live in and follow The Way.

In God, we live and move and have our being. Are we conscious of that, and do our lives reflect that? That is a good question for each of us to think about. Jesus tells us in the gospel, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Have faith in God and have faith in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places.” Then he tells Thomas, “you know where I am

going, so follow me.” Thomas tells him, “we don’t know where you are going, how can we know the way?” Jesus effectively tells him, “Thomas I’m not talking about geography, I’m talking about my way, a way of the heart...I Am the Way...” We follow the Way of Jesus, a way of the Heart, a way of love, the way of Jesus… a person for others. It is in this self same sacrificial way of Jesus that we live our lives with selfless sacrificial love. That is the vision out of which we exercise our Baptismal rights and responsibilities. We do so with love, a passionate love for Jesus and the church, and for all people. It’s a call to mature discipleship, it is what it means to be good stewards of all God’s gifts, our time, our talents, and our treasure, to follow the Way of Jesus. We call you to that today here at St. Thomas, on this Stewardship Sunday. The parish needs and relies on your covenant love as a mature disciple to follow the Way of Jesus with sacrificial selfless love as you share your gifts of time, talent, and treasure. The parish needs that especially this year as we try to close a very tight budget and continue our level of service. I urge you to consider how seriously we live in God. Thank you and God Bless you for the ways you do! With love,

Dear Friends,

“I’m talking about a way of

the heart.”

Roman Missal Changes From USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) What if I don’t like the new translation? For most people, the unfamiliar is always un-comfortable, at least at first. The more familiar the old is, the more challenging it may be to accept and embrace the new. It is completely normal to feel uncomfortable as you begin studying and reading the new texts. Taking steps to become more famil-iar with the texts can help a great deal. At the same time, be open to the possibility that you will find things to appreciate in the rich language of the new texts. The more you read them and study them and pray them, the more familiar and comfortable they will become and the more you will appreciate the theological depth they convey. Taking time to learn more about your faith, including the Mass and Scripture, can help you appreciate the new texts more fully. Using the cate-chetical opportunities made available by your par-ish and diocese can help you overcome concerns about these changes. Finally, you can take your concerns to God in prayer. Pray for a deeper understanding of the meaning of these texts and for an open heart to grow in communion with the Church. This concludes the question section from the USCCB. Next week… Praying with Body, Mind, and Spirit from the USCCB.

Dear God, Linking love with obedience is not the thing we do best. We confess to preferring a teary-eyed sentimental love that makes no demands, requires no allegiance. But, here you are again, calling us to love and obedience; calling us to a different kind of love — love that does (or doesn’t do), love that demonstrates itself in style of life, thoughts, emotions, or actions. Lead us into this kind of love, we pray, so that the world might know that we are your disciples.

Amen. —Rev. Dr. Safiyah Fosua

Faith and Spiritual Formation Commission

The primary Old Testament reference that pre-figures Eucharist comes from the Passover ritual as it is detailed in Exodus 12. The Israelites were still in bondage in Egypt and the Lord had brought all but the last plague upon Pharaoh and the people of Egypt. In order to save their first-borns from death, the Israelites were to procure a male, unblemished lamb of the appropriate age and the first to open the womb of its mother. This represented the perfect sacrifice. They then were commanded to slaughter the lamb. Its blood was to be put on the door frames of their homes. They were then instructed to roast and eat the lamb with unleavened bread. None of the lamb was to be left over – it had to be completely consumed. They were also instructed to commemorate the event as a lasting ordinance for the generations to come. John the Baptist referred to Jesus as the Lamb of God. We see in the Passover ritual our perfect Lamb of God in the person of Jesus, sacrificed to save all from death. Jesus met all the requirements for the perfect sacrifice; He was male, unblem-ished (without spot or sin), of a certain age and the first born son of His mother, Mary.

Growing Up Sexually (G.U.S.) Program Information for 6th Graders Registration is now open for the 2011 Growing Up Sexually (G.U.S.) program for current 6th grade stu-dents. The G.U.S. program is a great way to open the discussion with your child about topics of sexuality and about understanding themselves and their bodies as unique and special creations, designed by God. The program is intended to serve as a starter to this conversation that is to be continued and followed up in the home. Sessions will take place for four straight Sundays, starting on June 5. Sessions will last 90 minutes and will take place in the early afternoon, from 1:30 – 3:00 pm. Cost of enrollment is $30 per child. To en-roll your son or daughter, please contact Brett Adams at (630) 355-8980 x 117; [email protected] no later than June 1. G.U.S. Volunteers Still Needed While registration is currently open for the G.U.S. program this June, we still have a very serious need for additional adult volunteers, particularly men, to help facilitate the sessions. If you are an adult who has completed the Protecting God’s Children Virtus training, and are available during Sunday afternoons in June, and would be able to assist in instructing youth by discussing issues of sexuality, please contact Brett Adams as soon as possible at 630.355.8980 x 117; [email protected].

The following people helped in some way to pass our faith on to the children of St. Thomas (Pre-K through 5th grade). They shared their gifts and time with the St. Thomas Religious Education Program during this past year, helping our young people to grow in their faith. The R.E. pro-gram is dependent on this sense of shared ministry. If you know any of these wonderful people, please take a moment to thank them. If you would like the opportunity to share your faith, please call the Religious Education Office and we would be happy to assist you in ways to do so.

Tuscaloosa Tornado Relief On April 27, 2011, 21 confirmed tornadoes touched down in Alabama. More were reported across other south-

ern states. Multiple tornadoes were reported in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where damage was devastating. Forty-one people were confirmed dead. More than 5,000 buildings in Tuscaloosa were destroyed or severely dam-

aged, including thousands of homes and apartments. Whole neighborhoods are gone and major apartment com-plexes (many serving low-income families) lie in rubble. Two schools were destroyed.

Tina Barbaccia is a St. Thomas parishioner. She works for the Randall-Reilly Publishing Company that is headquartered in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Fortunately, none of the 350 employees were seriously hurt. Tina’s

company mobilized and employees were given time off with pay to help in the community.

Tina called St. Thomas and asked if there was anything we could do to help. We were able to take a second collection on the weekend of May 1. St. Thomas parishioners donated $5168 which is being funneled through Catholic Charities to aid tornado victims. Thanks to all that were able to help. If anyone would like to contrib-

ute at this time, donations can be made to “St. Thomas OSJ” with “Tornado Relief” in the Memo.

Pastoral Care Tornado Safety at Home Two Different terms are used for tornado weather.

WATCH – Conditions make a tornado possible. WARNING – A tornado has been spotted.

Sirens sound only during a warning, so take action! Make your way to the northeast corner of your basement. Make yourself as small as possible by crouching down. Climb under a heavy worktable or other strong furniture. Store blankets and quilts nearby to cover yourself from flying debris. If you don’t have a basement, go to an interior room without windows, like a first floor bathroom. Climb into the tub with a couch cushion to protect you from debris. Tornado Safety at Church If tornado sirens go off during mass, stay calm! Here are some suggestions for your safety. Hallways and bathrooms without windows are the safest places in our building. Make your way there in an orderly fashion. Stay out of the gym. Large open spaces are more likely to collapse. There may be little time to move to safety. If you are unable to get to the hallways, crawl under your pew and make yourself as small a “target” as possible. Help children, the elderly, and those with disabilities get into position.

What Causes Arthritis? No longer considered just a consequence of aging, arthritis is the inflammation of one or more joints that results in pain, swelling and limited movement. Arthritis involves the breakdown of cartilage which normally protects the joints and allows for smooth movement. Without it, bones rub together and dis-comfort results. There are over 100 different types of arthritis, and about 37 million Americans of all ages suffer from some form. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type and the one most likely to occur with aging. While it can affect any of the joints, it is most com-mon in the hips, knees and fingers. Risk factors include being overweight, a previous injury to the affected joint and using the affected joint in a repetitive action. Genetic defects, musculoskele-tal defects and injury are uncontrollable factors that can cause arthritis, too. But there are actions you can take to avoid OA and protect your joints: Maintain your ideal weight. Move! Build muscles! Exercise strengthens the

muscles and in doing so protects the bones. Strong muscles keep joints from rubbing together and wearing down the cartilage. Low-impact aerobic exercise and range of motion exercises for flexibil-ity are important, too.

Practice good posture to protect neck, back, hip and knees.

Pace yourself. Take breaks when engaging in heavy activity.

Listen to your body. Do not ignore pain.
