He Sent Them Out Two By Two – A Christian is not called to “go it alone” in this life, no matter the circumstances. While sometimes we are tempted to just do it ourselves, in reality Jesus encourages us to invite others into our lives through faith and trust in God and with love. In today’s Gospel we learn of the amazing things the apostles are able to do as they go out in pairs, trusting in the Lord to provide for their needs and for the needs of others through them. They are able to drive out demons and heal the sick, and they invite other to follow Jesus through

their words and deeds. We are called to share in the mission of Christ and his Church today, yet we are not individually committed to this task. As members of the Body of Christ we work together to make Jesus present in the world. On Mission for The Church Alive! is an opportunity for us to grow in faith and friendship so that together we can form vibrant communities that share God’s life with others. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

SAVE THE DATE! The Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose has been a Knights of Columbus tradition for 58 years. In 1960,

groups of Columbian Squires in Mexico, Canada and the United States decided to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe by carrying a rose across North America from Canada to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey, Mexico. In 2001 Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson addressed the effort in culture of life terms, referring to the Our Lady of Guadalupe - One Life, One Rose Program. He urged that it be expanded to every North American jurisdiction.

In recent years the program has expanded to eight silver roses traveling the western, central, and eastern corridors of North America, with Knights of Columbus from Canada to Mexico carrying the roses from destination to destination, and finally to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey, Mexico. Every stop along the route of the Silver Rose Pilgrimage is an occasion for prayer and spiritual renewal centered on the rosary. The Knights of St Elizabeth Ann Seton Council are happy to announce that we have been given the opportunity to participate in the pilgrimage. We will conduct a Prayer Hour and presentation of the Silver Rose on Thursday, August 16th at 6:30 pm. We invite all members of the parish to attend this very special event.

BE A FRIEND

Several years ago Bishop Zubik released a letter titled The Church Evangelizing. And in that document, he tells us, “Evangelization, pure and simple, is the extension of friendship with Jesus to others through us. To evangelize is to draw others into friendship with Christ. To be an evangelist is to be the face, the hands, the heart and the voice of Christ to those who long to hear a friendly voice and see a friendly face” (40). We’re to be engaging in what might be called friendship evangelization; as the Bishop puts it, “Be a friend. Be a friend of Jesus. Make friends for Jesus.” Although the OMCA grouping process involves changes in parish structures, the Bishop has reminded us that it is part of the work of evangelizing. And some of the things he talks about in The Church Evangelizing can help us make the process of growing together with our sister parishes, St. Margaret of Scotland and Sts. Simon and Jude, into something that witnesses to our Catholic faith. First, friendship evangelization means to be welcoming to people. If people are coming into the SEAS community, they need to be made to feel like they are coming into something good, and a community where they will be embraced. As Bishop Zubik notes, when people come to us, we need to greet them warmly. He says, “We ought to help them find a place, not just in the pew, but in the heart of our parishes. We need to learn about their interests and lead them to a community of faith where they can find friendship and experience an invitation to partnership. This is what it means to be Church” (112). We need to allow them a place in our own hearts, wanting what is best for them and what will bless them, showing them the kind of welcome that inspired people to say of the early church, “look how they love one another.” Those are all reasons to welcome and befriend those who will be coming to SEAS over the next months. And the same is true when we attend Mass or other events at St. Margaret of Scotland or Sts. Simon and Jude: appreciate the welcome you receive and respond in kind! Second, friendship evangelization includes what Pope Francis, in The Joy of the Gospel, calls “practicing the art of listening,” which he tells us “is more than simply hearing. . . . [It] is an openness of heart which makes possible that closeness without which genuine spiritual encounter cannot occur” (171). If we listen in that openhearted way to those we will be meeting, we will be able to enter into the lives of our new fellow parishioners with understanding and appreciation, coming to know them and their uniqueness and qualities in a deeper way, so that we’re able to be open to what they have to share with us, what we can share that will benefit them, and how we can truly become a community together. Third, friendship evangelization involves prayer. The twelfth-century Cistercian Aelred of Rievaulx, in his famous book On Spiritual Friendship, tells us that the most important part of friendship is praying for your friend, for in doing so you are bringing yourself, your friend, and your relationship to God! Looking at our own future in what is currently called Grouping 210, we need to realize that it is ultimately the power of God’s grace and the work of the Holy Spirit that will take this process where it needs to go, and will enable us to be a part of the good, and the community, that results. Therefore, prayer is not only important, but absolutely necessary as we grow together in Christ through these coming months. Pray for each other! Finally, as Bishop Zubik tells us in The Church Evangelizing, “Friendship, in the traditional Christian understanding of the word, requires contact, connection, and care. It requires love, which requires conversation, concern, constancy. Love is many things. One thing friendship is NOT is passive or mechanical. It is not stingy. Friendship is active. It requires time” (55). That last phrase is a reminder that this process will take time: therefore we have to stick with it! We need to maintain that contact with our new friends, be constant in our prayer, and welcoming to those we meet at SEAS and at our sister parishes as we, by the grace of God, pursue holiness together, seek the light of God’s guidance, receive the sacraments, cooperate with the work of the Holy Spirit, and love God and one another. Bishop Zubik tells us, “Be a friend. Be a friend of Jesus. Make friends for Jesus.” That is what we’re called to be doing in these coming months and years as our new grouping truly begins to embody what can happen when people come together in faith and love, knowing that God is with us.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION: INQUIRY Responding to the motivation of the Holy Spirit, you, the parish members are called to share God’s Divine life of salvation with all those you meet. Perhaps you are being summoned right now to evangelize and welcome those in families, in the workplace, in neighborhood gatherings, in all of your daily contacts. Seek those who were never introduced to the Sacrament of Baptism, or those considering a grace-filled life in the Catholic Church, or those who were never able to continue their Sacramental life through Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. Then introduce them to the RCIA Inquiry monthly sessions this summer by guiding them or submitting their names to the parish office. We are always open to new members to begin this process. “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15)

RCIA: MYSTAGOGY Neophytes, those who have entered the Catholic Church this past Easter, are presently “opening the mysteries of our faith” in this 4th period of the RCIA process called Mystagogy. This period begins immediately after Easter and extends throughout the liturgical year which allows for monthly gatherings until the anniversary of their initiation next Easter. This mystagogy period is a time for deepening their appreciation for the sacramental life, for spiritual growth, and for incorporation into the parish community. Please welcome our Neophytes into the many activities of our parish life.

HERE COMES THE FIFTH! Two weeks from now, July 29th, will be the 5th Sunday of July, which means our second collection will be a St. Vincent de Paul "5th Sunday Collection". Those of us working in the case management side of SEAS SVdP are breathing a sigh of relief that this collection is soon, as we count on the hope that our parishioners will come through again to donate financially so that we can continue to help the low income in our neighborhood community with assistance in important ways other than food. (We always hold enough money in reserve to ensure that we have enough food, so that's not a concern.) We aren't able to identify the reason(s), but monetary donations have been lower these past six months or so, and, unfortunately, the needs of the poor have continued to increase. Please pray for our SVdP Conference, pray about the amount you believe you are called to donate, and, mostly, pray for the poor! “If you are going to do something for the poor, the abused, or the imprisoned, above all be faithful. People with broken lives often come from lives with broken promises.” — Sister Helen Prejean, C.S.J.

CONTAGIOUS CATHOLICISM!

Maybe you've heard of Cursillo .. in case you haven't, it is a Movement in the Catholic Church that

approaches faith and spirituality from a perspective of deepening one's relationship with God

through their prayer-life ('Piety') and through study of Christ and the Church ('Formation'), and then

putting that faith into action ('Evangelization').

One of the Cursillo mottos is: “ Make a friend, be a friend, bring a friend to Christ”.

This rings true in the big picture of Catholic evangelization. If we let God become the center and

focus of our living, our faith will very naturally be manifested in our relationships with others, and in

the examples we set simply by living joy-filled, Christ-centered lives. Listen to what theologian Dr.

Scott Hahn says about living a Catholic life:

"Even if you can’t defend the faith, even if you can’t explain each and every doctrine, or prove

them from the Bible, what each of us can do is this: enjoy being Catholic. That’s the best way to

evangelize family and friends! The more we enjoy being Catholic, the more contagious we become

as Catholics, the more infectious our faith will be." ~ Dr. Scott Hahn, Irresistible Joy

Take a minute to consider what you most enjoy or love about being Catholic. Share it with someone

in your family or circle. Then share it again, this time with someone who isn't Catholic!

Congratulations to Scott Brennen, the winner of the July 4th raffle. The winning number was 976. Thanks to all who purchased and sold tickets in support of the Knights of Columbus. The next drawing will be Columbus Day, Monday, October 8, 2018. Tickets will go on sale after Labor Day. Please have a safe and enjoyable summer.

SEEKING MEDICAL AND LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL We are wanting to identify those parishioners who have professional training in the area of medical first aid (doctors, nurses, aids, emt's, etc.), and also in law enforcement background and experience. Will you please email your contact information and your professional exerience information to Tess Keddie at [email protected] ?

BIENNIAL DIOCESAN PILGRIMAGE TO THE BASILICA OF THE NATIONAL SHRINE OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

IN WASHINGTON, D.C. — SATURDAY, 9/15/18

We at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton have ordered our bus for The 2018 Diocesan Pilgrimage to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. This will be held on Saturday, September 15, day trip. Although we

have to open the opportunity to all parishes in the diocese and to anyone who may want to use our convenient location as their starting and ending point, we’d love to make this a Grouping 210 event! That means we need 55 people to step up

as soon as possible and verbally commit to attending this (first come-first served!). The cost for each person will be

approximately $75 including one boxed meal on the way home that evening. You may want to plan to bring additional funds for purchasing lunch upon arrival, gifts at the Basilica gift shop, tip for the bus driver, etc.

We are looking for your verbal commitment immediately. We will need your payment (check made payable to “SEAS Parish” with “9/15/18 pilgrimage” in notation section) before Monday, August 14th in order to process it in time for the diocesan deadline.

This is a special year to make this pilgrimage as our diocese will be celebrating our 175th anniversary; in light of this Bishop

Zubik will join us to pray for, and reflect on, “On Mission for the Church Alive.” The schedule for the day includes departure from Carnegie (or Greentree) at 6:00 a.m. sharp, with: arrival at the Basilica at approximately 11:00 a.m., a tour of the

National Shrine, a Holy Hour, Mass with Bishop Zubik, a sacred music concert by the Diocesan Choir, a Holy Hour, opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and more! We’ll depart @ 5:00 p.m. with arrival in Carnegie (or Greentree) between 10:00 and 11:00 p.m.

Designated by the USCCB as a National Sanctuary of Prayer and Pilgrimage, the Basilica is the nation’s preeminent Marian shrine. After 100 years the largest Catholic Church in North America is now complete. Its “Trinity Dome” has been termed a

modern-day masterpiece by Cardinal Donald Wuerl. Twenty-four tons of Venetian glass were used in its construction.

Contact for commitment and/or questions: Tess Keddie, 412-276-1011 ext. 221 or [email protected]. Please leave your name, email address, mail address, and phone number.

St. Margaret of Scotland Parish Registration for St. Margaret School is taking place right now for the 2018-2019 school year. They offer Preschool —Grade 8 with a challenging curriculum in a faith-filled environment. Call 412-922-

Ss. Simon and Jude Parish "After My Own Heart" is a prayer ministry dedicated to praying for our priests and an

increase in vocations. Please join us on July 23rd in the Holy Family Chapel at Saints Simon and Jude Parish located in the upper level of the school. We meet from 7:00 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Hope to see you there!
