MARY, MOTHER OF MERCY
It is easy to talk about our Blessed Mother in the theme of mercy, because She resembles the merciful
Father in heaven. Only thinking of Her and seeing how She lived the virtue of mercy we can do what our
Holy Father, Pope Francis calls the “revolution of tenderness and love.” Our Holy Father wants that all of
us Catholics work in this project of tenderness and love, which all human beings need to give and receive.
Counting on the love of our Blessed Mother, we can begin that revolution of tenderness and love in our
homes, schools, missions, communities, colonies, etc. Through this revolution we can be cells that work
in the regeneration of our society, that has forgotten tenderness, mercy and love, etc.
In the Catholic tradition Mary is the Immaculate Virgin, the person preserved of all stain of sin by the mercy
of God. The election of Mary by God, the Father is founded in the total gratuitously of his paternal love
that made Her “full of grace” (cfr. Lc. 1,28). The heavenly Father has given Mary totality of his mercy, at
the sight of her messianic maternity. Thus the fullness of grace indicates her holiness, of her consecration
by God, and of her mission.
The “fiat” and “Magnificat” are the answer of Mary to the mercy of the Father. In the Magnificat Mary
sings: “The Almighty has done great things in me and his name is holy. His mercy extends from generation
to generation, in those ones who fear Him. He has helped Israel, his servant, remembering his mercy. (Lc.1,
50, 54). In this sense the theme of the Magnificat is essentially the love of the Father to the humble and
poor. In this way Mary with her Magnificat, becomes a sign of the Father’s mercy toward humanity. In
her singing. She makes us see the new order that will begin with the coming of the Kingdom.
Mary is the Prophetess of the mercy of the Father and His best disciple. In fact She knows, as nobody does,
the mystery of the mercy that fulfills its highest peak in Calvary, because in it She became Mother of the
Church, having her merciful heart opened to all her children (sons & daughters)
In the life of Mary written by Maximo, the Confessor, in the year 662, it is said about the last years of the
Blessed Virgin: “her mercy was not only for her family members, or her acquaintances, but also for the
foreigners and the enemies because She is truthfully the Mother of mercy.
If we are children of our blessed Mother Mary, let us try to resemble Her in a way in some of her virtues
and today we are thinking about the importance of a heart that learns to be merciful.
