Glance at our food menu and you’ll see that we focus not only on seasonality but on regionality. This is because we feel that food has an identity and flavour reflective of the area that it comes from. With wine being no exception, we’ve decided to organise our list by region. We’ve picked the countries and regions that we think are the most interesting and the most suited to our style of food.

If you have any questions or need help deciding, ask one of our sommeliers who will be more than happy to offer a helping hand.

Piedmont, italy Surrounded by the Alps, Piedmont benefits from a mountainous terrain that gives its wine an autumnal quality, making it the perfect accompaniment to the White truffles, mushrooms and wild boar produced in the region. Yet it is the red wine that truly stands out, with the Freisa, Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo grapes unique to the area. It is little wonder that Piedmont is often referred to as the ‘Burgundy of Italy’.

Veneto, ItalyVeneto is jam-packed full of vineyards, making it Italy’s largest quality wine-producing region. It makes the most DOC and DOCG wine, but Puglia and Sicily sometimes produce more wine. The highest quality wines come from the hilly areas of Soave and Valpollicella, characterised by their poorer soils, rather than from the over-fertile plains of other regions. The new generation of Venetian wine producers demonstrate great diversity in their winemaking; from one grape they can produce a wide range of different wines, from the mineral Calvarino to the oak-aged La Rocca. Friuli, italyFriuli’s unique positioning sandwiched between Austria and Slovenia, the Alps and the Adriatic Sea has provided the region with a real mix of cultures and a unique climate. This is reflected in the elegant, acidic and mineral wines that the area produces. With one of the lowest wine yields in the country, Friuli is all about quality, not quantity. White Ribolla Gialla 2009, Russolo Grave £30.25Pinot Grigio ‘Ramato’ 2009, Visintini Colli Orientali £33.5Friulano 2009, Specogna Colli Orientali £37.5Sauvignon Blanc 2008, Lis Neris Isonzo £45 Chardonnay 2008, Vie di Romans Isonzo £56‘Vintage Tunina’ 2007, Jermann Isonzo £66 RedMerlot 2008, Braide Grave £17.5Refosco ‘Collezione’ 2007, Russolo Grave £36‘Vertigo’ 2008, Livio Felluga (Merlot/Cab Sauv) Collio £44Pignolo 2006, Specogna Colli Orientali £54

Tuscany, ItalyTuscany embodies everything we think of as being Italian, from the food and wine to the people and the land. Each wine produced here represents a different aspect of the region. Tuscan viticulture underwent a revival in the 1960’s when a small group of rebel winemakers began blending foreign grape varieties with the local Sangiovese grape. Known as the ‘Super Tuscans’ (ST*) these wines are highly praised on an international scale.

The ITalIan IslandsThey may be small, but the Italian islands produce an abundance of interesting and creative wines, reflective of their diverse cultural heritage and hilly land. Loire VaLLey, FranceAlong the banks of France’s longest river, from the costal Muscadet region through to central Sancerre, the Loire produces a selection of sophisticated wines. The flinty, mineral soil gives the wine distinctive characteristics and the cool temperatures exude freshness and elegance, producing clean whites and more delicate reds that are especially well suited to seafood.

Burgundy, France Burgundy is undoubtedly one of the most important wine producing regions in the world with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir as the two stand-out varieties of grape. The area’s varied soil creates a large array of different wines, all complex in flavour. In order to distinguish themselves, producers try to reflect their vineyard’s soil type and climate in the flavour of their wines, making them impossible to replicate elsewhere. In the wine world this is referred to as ‘Terroir’.

SpainAfter Italy and France, Spain is the third largest producer of wine in the world. The country hosts over 600 grape varieties although interestingly the majority of the country’s wine production is made up of only 20. Despite being famous for its Rioja and Cava, Spain tends to focus on lesser known wines that are unique to certain regions, from the cool, wet areas in the north to dry, very hot areas in the centre.

AustriAAustrian wines may not be as renowned worldwide as some of their competitors, but they’re not to be overlooked. Short very cold winters and long dry summers give the wines a ripe and elegant profile. The whites, made from the Grüner Veltliner and Riesling grapes, are regarded as ‘food friendly’, matching perfectly with pork and fish. As for the reds, the unique local varieties show great potential and are enjoying a renaissance of interest.

Western AustrAliAWinemaking is a serious occupation in Australia and is very much a part of the country’s outdoor-orientated culture. With show-stoppers like the Margaret River, Western Australia is host to some fantastic winemakers. Vineyards tend to be small in size, focusing on low yield yet high-quality boutique wineries. The wines here have an aromatic quality as a result of the stable weather conditions that allow the grapes to ripen slowly.
